Rocky didn’t wait to hear the decision. He started calling for Adrien. Winning never mattered for him. He just wanted to go the distance. And so he did.
You are correct he just wanted to go the distance. There was that scene with Adrian where he admitted that he couldn't beat Creed, he didn't care thought, he just wanted to prove he wasn't a bum fighter and that he could go the distance. Mickey wanted to him to stay down for probably safety reasons and now saw that Rocky wasn't just some bum fighter. Rocky earned Mickey's respect but I don't think he ever knew what Rocky's intentions were which as you said to go the distance. As far as winning never mattered for him. Correct too. When him and Creed are hugging after the fight Apollo said "aint going to be no rematch" which Rocky replied he didn't want one.
Rocky 1 - going the distance Rocky 2 - proving you can beat the best Rocky 3 - Face your fear Rocky 4 - Fight for revenge Rocky 5 - Prove you can still brawl
Yea, that's one thing about this movie that makes it the best of the series. All of the others, you know he's going to win the last fight of the movie. Here, he knows winning is hopeless, but gives his all anyway. After this one I like #3.
"If I keep the distance and the bell rings and I am still standing, at that moment, I will know for the first time in my life that, I was not just one more wanderer in the neighborhood." - He just wanted to know that.
"Down, down, stay down." Mickey was sure of that Rocky would stand up. Although Mickey said "Down", he actually wanted Rocky's stand more than Rocky, but he couldnt resist to see him like that. What a friend, a father, a trainer...
To me the most electrifiyng moment is watching the closing moments of round 2 when Rocky has Apollo in the corner and is doing some serious damage to him and they show the Promoter Jergens face and he is looking on in disbelief that Rocky is actually making a real fight of this. And then the round ends and the awesome music kicks in and you know the battle is on. R.I.P. to the great Carl Weathers. A seriously underrated actor great in everything he was ever in.
There’s nothing I can say about this movie, let alone the franchise that in my opinion is one of the best franchises of movies ever made, that hasn’t already been said. The story behind it and the meaning behind it all is something that also inspires me. What Sly went through to get this movie made is a legendary story that you should google. But I know Sly has been type cast throughout his career and some of my favorite movies growing up are because of him…Over the top, Rambo, Cobra, and of course this franchise and everything that’s come from it, Creed etc. Stallone will always hold a special order lace in my heart for all the joy he’s brought me through his work!
Lol the amount of damage Rocky did to Apollo's life in this franchise is unbelievable. -Goes 15 rounds with him, and makes society think Apollo was carrying him the entire fight, which causes outrage. -Apollo loses to him in the rematch, pretty much ending his career. -Apollo dies fighting Drago cause Rocky refused to throw in the towel as Apollo's trainer and family watch begging him to end the match. -To honor Apollo Rocky brings Apollo's son into a life of violence that Rocky himself didnt want for his own son. -Allows Creed Jr to risk his life by fighting Drago's prodigy.
Mark Reuber lmao ooohh we got a tough guy here, you whincy little bitch look at you blushing in the pic like a giggly 12 year old schoolgirl, pathetic try at an insult....BAM YOU JUST GOT SERVED
I saw it as the opposite. Apollo may have meant it as saying he was always going to win the fight and that Rocky would go back to nothing. Rocky may have meant that he would have nothing to do with the champ and sooner forget this fight to spite him.
If you listen very carefully, you can hear the announcer say Apollo Creed won just as Rocky and Adrian say "I love you." When I was younger I always wondered why they didn't make that louder so the audience wouldn't be confused. Now I understand that we were hearing it as Rocky heard it. He went the distance and Adrian loves him. At that moment, nothing else mattered just as it shouldn't matter to the audience. Brilliant!!!
Amazing we got to see Mickey Ward and Arturo Gatti do Rocky in real life. More than half of us don't know who won their first fight, it was something so great, it didn't matter who won. We won, because we got to see something truly special.
There are so many subtleties to the Rocky movies (particularly one and two) that I didn't appreciate until I got older. Sylvester Stallone could not have done a better job with these movies and many of the themes - the dreary existence Rocky has, the resilience, grabbing the opportunity with both hands, testing himself and finding out who he really is - parallel's Stallone's himself. He was 30 y/o with no career to speak of when he wrote, produced and starred in Rocky.
No joke, the bell sounding at 4:00, leading into the theme, is one of greatest musical moments in cinema history. A moment that completely defines an era of movies.
@@joannalewis5279 I love that what you wrote absolutely! Reminds me of Rocky 2 when Micky goes to Rockys new house over shutting up Appolla and at the end of the convo Rocky says "Absolutely!".
What's powerful for me is the "Down, down, stay down" part. This is Rocky's one shot at greatness but it's Mickey's one shot too. And he's willing to give it up because he doesn't want to see Rocky get hurt anymore. Really amazing scene.
wizzzboyツ hope, if you ever voiced before you will know that 10 seconds means nothing you just get up right away because there is a side line guy who starts the count as soon as you hit the floor
@@conbatengineer you don't have to get up immediately when you're knocked down. the count acts as a method to judge whether a fighter is fit to keep going or not. if the referee's count is slow (they do this on purpose to see if the fighter can still get up within the 10 count) fighters can take advantage of the slow count to take a moment to catch their breath. the ref in the clip is clearly counting slow, so mick told rocky to take advantage of the count so he can rest.
J Money those were things he didn’t have yet that he was hoping to gain by beating Adonis. He had nothing to lose and he was trying to gain his dad’s love and respect from his county. You can’t lose something you don’t have
J Money Uhm I think you mean his Mother. When his mom left again during the fight, it looked like he was heart broken and his dad gave up, went ahead and threw in his towel. They were fighting for that wretched woman all along, to comeback to them. Only if Ivan had married an Adrian, he wouldn’t have lived like he did. It affected his son so badly. That’s so sad, what kind of mother is that!
When I first saw it I thought about what excuse they made to do a sequel that didn’t ruin this line, and it really was a good sequel with Rocky not wanting to fight and Apollo wanting a rematch because of the whole letters thing
Such an inspirational movie. Shows you that when life finally gives you the opportunity you’ve been waiting for, you attack it with full force, giving it everything you got. Blood, sweat and tears, literally. No regrets, leave it all in the ring.
And if life beats you for taking that opportunity, fight back. You may not win, but make sure life is not walking away unscathed. Go down fighting, go down trying.
And let me tell you something about life. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!
@@ajvalencia5867 They were in real danger of not finishing the last scene as they had run out of time in the studio, it was all being packed up around them as they were finishing shooting!
The reason Rocky resonates with so many people? The uplifting message transcends a boxing match. These rounds and punches are all of life's trials. The older you get, the more you persevere in succeeding and winning at life and overcoming life's hurdles and stumbling blocks, the more emotional this scene becomes. It's an absolute masterpiece.
not only that Rocky endured. He also fought back fiercely. Look at his defiance in 4:04, 4:39 and 5:58, the show of unbreakable will of persevering is touching to people who really need to see it, and it meant alot too because its also Stallone's last hurrah as a writer at the time. There was no guarantee that this movie will blow up if he played as Rocky, but he held on to it. "If I am going to fail, I want to fail in my own terms."
Went to see it with my dad when I was thirteen, my dad was an Italian immigrant who was hard as nails and survived WWII and unimaginable poverty and I was a spoiled kid going to a private catholic school. Unfortunately we were worlds apart and never understood each other then one day I still don't know how I convinced him to take me to see Rocky . He never liked going to movies and I think he only went to a handful during his lifetime but we both were totally absorbed into that film as well as the rest of the theater. All I can say is that watching "Rocky" together was a rare moment that our two worlds connected and I will never forget that even if I live to be 100.
I’m 43. The time that’s past since this film was made and since I’ve been on this earth would be like the USA winning its independence from GB in 1776 and it now being 1820. That’s crazy. The war of 1812 would be well past and the US would already have become an established sovereign nation. Man time flies
Knew he couldn't win. Told Adrian that all he wanted to do was go the distance. No one have ever done that against Creed. He knew he'd finally be someone. Well, he did it. Even in defeat, Rocky won. Goal accomplished.
You know what's even more hard to stomach is the fact he's practically blinded by this point from all the shots he took. Calling out the love of his life among the chaos and he can't see anything.
That's the thing. Rocky wasn't a boxing movie. It was the story of two socially awkward people that fell in love. It just happened to be one of them was a down on his luck boxer.
I have to respect duke as a character. From the moment he said “he doesn’t think this is a show, he thinks it’s a fight” he knew Rocky was dangerous. He knew he had will. One of the best lines in the franchise.
I agree, Duke was a great character throughout the Rocky movies (one of the only characters in all 6). My favorite Duke scene is in Rocky 2 when he tells Apollo "I saw you beat that man like I never seen no man been beat before...and the man...kept...coming... after you." Just outstanding acting. Rest in peace Duke.
Another scene that was great was when Rocky was punching the meat on TV and Duke was the only one watching. He knew Apollo was taking Rocky too lightly even before the fight.
+Randy Bailin If this film is successful, there will be sequels for 40 years, and we will even invent a son for you who is 10 years away from being born right now..
There’s a lot of great pieces to this part of the movie. One thing that gets overlooked is the amount of support Rocky had from the neighborhood. The folks cheering at the bar with that first hit. Rocky thinking he’s alone but he has the whole community with him.
Sometimes i forget its a movie and solely remembering its message begins to give goosebumps and i want to cry. "Going the distance" it doesnt matter if you make it or not, what matters is that you gave it your best effort and went as far as you possibly could.
I don't know if it's a yearly thing but I've seen video of them playing the entire movie in Philly by the statue. If they can do that every year I'm sure people will fly from all over the world just to be a part of that event, bet!
I love apollo's look when he sees Rocky got up. And the "are you f***ing kidding me man, if you just stayed down we could call it a night already" expression.
Sylvester Stallone doesn’t get nearly enough recognition for what he’s accomplished. If you look at the story of this movie, his writing, commitment to the character and the risks he took to ensure it stayed true to his vision, it’s truly remarkable that a person can have that much talent and confidence in himself. He could easily have sold out for a big pay day and probably no one would even know who he is today. Amazing
Especially someone who grew up in the 80s he was just a cheesy action star. With some great action movies i just mean his writing and directing ability weren’t widely know to us in that generation.
@@tigertoxins584strange that, I’ve heard the total opposite! He was in Birmingham to film Judge Dredd in 1995 and he stayed at a top notch hotel in the city centre where one of my mates worked. Saw him a lot and he said how pleasant and respectful he was to everyone, tipped well and was happy to pose for photos with fans. Different stories I guess……
He thought it wasn’t supposed to go this way, he thought he was supposed to destroy Rocky. He thought Rocky was a bum, but Rocky knew he could be more and so did Mickey. But he had to give it his all to be something.
The greatest part of this ending is Rocky and Adrian come together as they announce Apollo has won the fight and it isn't what they care about. Most brilliant ending when a defeat really isn't.
Rocky: I can't do it. Adrian: What? Rocky: I can't beat him. Adrian: Apollo? Rocky: Yeah. I been out there walkin' around, thinkin'. I mean, who am I kiddin'? I ain't even in the guy's league. Adrian: What are we gonna do? Rocky: I don't know. Adrian: You worked so hard. Rocky: Yeah, that don't matter. 'Cause I was nobody before. Adrian: Don't say that. Rocky: Ah come on, Adrian, it's true. I was nobody. But that don't matter either, you know? 'Cause I was thinkin', it really don't matter if I lose this fight. It really don't matter if this guy opens my head, either. 'Cause all I wanna do is go the distance. Nobody's ever gone the distance with Creed, and if I can go that distance, you see, and that bell rings and I'm still standin', I'm gonna know for the first time in my life, see, that I weren't just another bum from the neighborhood.
Steve Nelson I love how the result of the fight is announced in the background. Pretty much hits you over the head saying: the outcome of the fight is irrelevant; Rocky has won.
Paulie holding off the security guy and lifting the ropes for Adrian is such an underrated moment in this scene. While he's (mostly) good to his friend Rocky, until this point he's been nothing but a toxic, abusive leech on his sister, even sinking to physical violence. But in that moment when Adrian desperately needs to go to Rocky, when she looks up her brother and pleads for his help just by saying his name, he responds by finally doing the noble thing and looking out for his sister, as siblings should. After treating her like she was nothing for so long, like she was voiceless, he listened to and cared about Adrian when it mattered most. It's his fated moment of redemption, and in my eyes emblematic of how the two of them have begun to mend their relationship by this point.
I totally agree, I think it’s a great moment where Paulie realized what he did and redeems himself and acknowledges how much this means to the both of them.
You're right on in the way he acted toward and treated Adrian, but (and not to play devil's advocate) you gotta see it from his perspective. Now it doesn't at all excuse treating somebody this way-especially your sister- but Paulie cut her down based on fear of losing her. Granted, he threw all he did for her and gave up for her in her face, but what nobody realizes was that she was all he had and without her he'd have no purpose. That kind of "life" scared him.
5:45 - 6:18 " I saw you beat that man like I never saw no man get beat before, and the man kept coming after you. Now we don't need no man like that in our lives. "
Thats a classic line. After Apollo heard that from his trainer he knew he had no choice but to have a rematch. He couldnt live with himself until he proved he could beat Rocky.
Yeah. Carl Weathers had way more muscle mass and boxing physique. He also moved more like a boxer. He played numerous sports in high school and was a pro football player.
Yes, she went from shy and gentle, to gaining confidence in the later films. Talia never really overdid Adrian in the acting (I saw actress screenings for Scarlett O' Hara for Gone With The Wind, and one, I don't remember which, was definitely too tense and loud. More so than Vivien Leigh!). Anyhow, it's admirable how she was loved, despite all her flaws, but definitely inspired Rocky in those hard moments as well. Now if they redid her character today, there would be too much SJW and Mary Sue influences.
The look on Adrian's face when Rocky is on the mat, and the look on Apollo's face when he sees Rocky get up, stand out as two of the best scene's I've ever seen in a movie.
Add to that the old hardass trainer seconds earlier being humbled by his fighters determination and will power. The compassion of not wanting him to take any more punishment does it for me. Brilliant.
OMG... Finally someone who agrees with me! I was a seventeen year old girl when I saw Rocky for the first time at the cinema. I ended up becoming obsessed and went back day after day to watch it. Sometimes twice in one day. And I have ALWAYS thought, the scene where Appolo hangs his head in disbelief when he sees Rocky make it up, was without a doubt, the best few seconds of the whole movie. I can still remember the emotional impact that scene had on me. It was visceral. But I've never known anyone, until now, that really appreciated how impactful that scene was.
@@221BBakerStreet I love that the director had both of them have the same reaction, but for different reasons. Just added a real sense of poignancy to that scene.
@@pocobull Best finale to a movie EVER. Bar none. Adrienne witnesses in real time Rocky's determination and just how powerful his need to prove himself really is. I think that was the moment when she understood just how much she really loved him. And Apollo hanging his head was the moment he realised just how much he underestimated his opponent. There's a saying in the film industry. It's "show don't tell". The fight scene at the end is a perfect example of that. The powerful messages conveyed using zero dialogue. Pure genius. "Rocky" will always be my favourite movie. It's an absolute masterpiece.
One of he greatest "counter - intuitive" moments in cinema history, the good guy always wins supposedly. Rocky losing this fight made people wonder what he had gained, the answer is self respect.
Saucegod Sammy Good point! And that why it was such a good (and successful) movie since we are are treated to real life yet get a lesson in perseverance and self respect.
Yo be fair Rocky wasn’t the good guy because there was no villain he was the protagonist the main character and apollo was the antagonist because he influenced Rocky and changed him if it wasn’t for him Rocky wouldn’t have got those moments and the crowd would have never loved him
What really moves me is why Rocky gets up after the big hit in the 14th round. Not to maybe win the fight, cause that didn’t matter to him. But to prove to himself that he could do it. That he could go the distance and for the first time in his life actually accomplish something meaningful. Winning is subjective. He didn’t win the fight in the ring, but won his own personal fight in life.
I think Apollo winning was a fair result, sure Rocky won the last round but it was too little too late, he would've needed to knock him out. Apollo was the better fighter for the majority of the match
@@brendanforester4601 I saw you beat that man like I never saw no man get beat before, and the man kept coming after you. Now, we don't need that kinda man ...
@@Chris-qo4rt I'd like to know how came to that conclusion? I don't remember seeing every second of the 15 rounds? Just highlights? If you send me a link to full fight? Maybe I can agree with you? 😉 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You can tell when Apollo got knocked down by Rocky in the 1st round that he became scared likely for the first time in his entire boxing career. He was not expecting that kind of punching power and certainly wasn’t ready for it (as it would end up badly breaking his ribs). He was hiding it but you could tell that from that moment on he knew that he should have listened to Duke when he tried to warn him that Rocky would be a threat, and he certainly would never forget that fact, even when he would later befriend the Italian Stallion. Such amazing character development throughout this series.
I disagree. He wasn't scared. He was surprised and shocked but he showed that he could outbox Rocky but also go toe to toe with him. I was more impressed with Apollo actually. Outdogged the dog!
Friendly Neighborhood Bobby It was more than a love story. The boxing was the background, the love was the side-story, the true and real story was Rocky's own struggle with his own demons, pain and suffering. Feeling like a bum, a nobody, a waste of life. This was his chance to prove to himself he was somebody, at last. That's all he wanted, to go the distance, he already knew he was going to lose, but if he heard that bell ring in the last round and he is still standing, he knew he would achieve his goal. Also, do not underestimate the part of him wanting and seeking affection from his coach, which is why he felt abandoned, the lack of a father/role-model, that's why he got astray in his life.
dont be so sour, not everyone in the entire world knows rocky, creed introduced the rocky series to people and showed more people how legendary the rocky movies are
Every one thinks that rocky lost in this move, He may have technically lost the fight on points but he had won his self respect and the love of a good woman, In my book's he was a winner.
Oh man... The way Stallone shouts "ADRIAAAAN!!" is so compelling and emotional... that was him earning his Academy Award nomination right there. Then, that final moment... Rocky asks so lovingly to her "Where's your hat?" like they are anywhere else but inside a ring where he just fought the greatest fight of his life... He just adores her... and then, they say I love you to each other while the announcer is declaring Apollo the winner (they don't really care at that point who won the fight) This is one of the best endings of any movie ever... It gets me every time.
I love the story of Stallone writing the screenplay and the film studio offering a lot of money (he was poor at the time) but only for the screenplay, they wanted a big name in the Rocky roll, Ryan O'Neil was mentioned. Stallone stood his ground and said they could only have the screenplay if he played Rocky. Eventually the studio relented and said he could but his fee would be a lot less money. Stallone took the shot and the rest is history. The Rocky franchise gets looked down on by some people but the original movie is a classic, with awesome dialogue, characters, brilliant acting and a wonderful story. My mum & dad went to see it at the movies back in the 70's here in London, they said lots of people were cheering Rocky on in the final fight scene🥊😀
He was so poor that apparently he sold his own dog to a complete stranger at a gas station for enough to get him by. Later on when he took a huge pay cut because he insisted he be the star in his own movie, he got $35k. He found the man who bought his dog and apparently wouldn’t sell it back to him. Sly ended up paying the man 15 thousand dollars and gave him a part in Rocky in exchange for selling him back his best friend
5:18 - 6:10 This is the most powerful moment of the whole film. Rocky gets beaten down worse than ever before, Apollo assumes the fight is over, meanwhile Adrian comes in to see the man she loves struggle so hard just to stand up, and she's so upset at seeing him in such pain that she has to force herself to watch. Then he somehow gets up and a shocked Apollo walks back towards him to keep fighting. I can't help but cry every time I watch it.
Well, in fact, Rocky II was well written, to convice the audience why they should make a rematch. After this fight, Apollo's credibility was down and people was laughing at him because he couldn't beat a "bum", which made him, a proud boxer, seek to restore his pride. Rocky, on the other hand, was getting recognition, but was struggling because he was suddenly at a world that he never knew, and cound't adapt. And now having a wife and soon another family member, he was struggling with money. Addition to that, Apollo was taunting him for a rematch he didn't want, but the new situation of his life was forcing him to accept. This time, his reason to win the fight he could bearly keep up before, was his for own family sake.
"What were you thinking about when that buzzer --" ADRIAAAAN! "Uh. What were you thinking about --" ADRIAAAANN! *reporter doesn't fucking figure out this is the answer to the question*
This is one of the greatest films of all time. Every Rocky movie is pretty great, but 2-6 are great because they are hilarious and cheezy. The original Rocky however is a legitimately great film, probably one of the most inspirational movies you can ever see.
There's a lot of people that don't understand that the real fight in the movie is for Rocky to gain respect, appreciation, and go the distance. Rocky does lose the fight to Apollo but he wins so much more. It's a beautiful ending and for me the story stops here.
I agree with you. It was a perfect portrait of a man realizing his self worth. On the other hand, I still love seeing the other Rocky films, most of them, anyway. I wish they'd never killed off Apollo. Rocky 3 was interesting because they, Apollo and Rocky, deepened their relationship. Anyway, yes, it went on too long and too many stumbles.
That moment when Rocky gets flattened by Creed and even Mickey is just telling him to just stay down is one of the most epic scenes in film history. Following by his refusal to give in and Apollo's dumfounded reaction with that score in the background - it's just a glorious moment.
Never noticed this but love the little detail at 09:25 when Paulie lifts the rope so Adrian can get in the ring. He may be a jerk but he's a jerk with a heart of gold
Look at the techniques The way creed dances around and throws fast jabs is reminiscent of Ali's style. The way balboa curves and throws long punches is the same way Marciano fought.
I mean well considering that the character Rocky Balboa's hero and inspiration is Rocky Marciano in the film, kinda makes sense. As well as Sly Stallone being a huge fan of Rocky Marciano xDD
MyBenjamin66 Stallone got the inspiration to write about this movie after watching the Muhammad Ali vs Chuck Wepner fight in March 1975. Ali had just defeated George Foreman for the world title and everybody thought Ali was invincible. Ali just want an easy fight to prepare himself to fight bigger and true challengers such as Ron Lyle, Bugner and Frazier. Wepner is no hoper fighter with 50-50 records. Ali proudly said that he will be toying around with Wepner in the first three rounds and will finish him off in four. Everybody in the world believed him. As it turned out Wepner almost lasted the distance with a mere ten seconds to go when the referee stopped the fight. Wepner even knocked Ali down, the feat only Frazier and Henry Cooper had done before to Ali. Because Ali was knocked down and Wepner was not ko'ed at four, Ali wanted to finish him off as fast as possible. For fifteen rounds Ali bashed Wepner untill Wepner's face was full of blood but Wepner still standing. The crowd came to this boxing match just to see the legendary Ali plying his legendary skills but it turned they had watched one of Ali's most difficult fight and one of the most inspirational events in sports.

Rocky wasn't competing with Apollo, he was competing with himself, there is a quote that says dont compete with others, only yourself, rocky set his own personal goal for himself, not to beat apollo, but to prove to himself that he has the will determination and heart to keep standing against all odds, rocky was competing with his own built up years of self doubt and lack of self belief that he had fought with inside himself, he was fighting against himself in that ring, you dont need to prove anything to anyone beside yourself
When he Rocky is down the 2nd time and gets up, motions to Apollo and says "c'mon " is how i identify with my struggles in life. Apollo represents lifes challenges. This part usually makes me sob.
They called Rocky a "bum" a "loser" a "waste of life". Even his parents treated him as one. Everybody, including the street kids ridiculed him and had no value to what Rocky said. So he felt small and worked as a petty fighter for few dollars here and there or worked as a bully for the mobs to collect their debts from miserable people, although he could be bigger than that, he could be even a champion, but since he felt small, so he lived small. And all he could have was a crummy filthy apartment in the slum. He was lonely and no woman took him seriously, until he met the local "crazy" girl in the neighborhood, the girl who was also ridiculed by her parents and people. No one took either one of them seriously or counted them as worthy people. But their love for each other helped them to start a life as couple together no matter what people say about them. They deserved a life too. And then came the time for Rocky to fight the challenge of his life, in the ring of destiny, that had given Rocky the most important chance in his life to prove to himself and others that either he's truly a "loser bum" as everybody evaluated him, or he could prove to everyone that he too can win and he too can be somebody. It was time for him to prove to all those who put him down and mocked him and also this big black fighter Apollo who is ridiculing him and didn't take him seriously, and perceived Rocky as just a marketing scheme in a fake-fight, an insulting pity-fight with a bum by a world champion who thought he's way better than this bum and can knock him out in the first round. But Rocky proved Apollo that he's not a loser and he punched him so hard he was knocked. So Apollo realized he's dealing with a tough fighter and he should take Rocky seriously. So Rocky regained his worth and dignity he deserved round after round so much so that the Apollo feared he would even lose to Rocky. And Rocky at the end "went for the distance" and didn't let his enemy defeat him and make him fall. Rocky stood on his legs in all the rounds, and regained his dignity and life's worth. Rocky finally proved to his world that was able too, that he could make it big too. Rocky faced and fought the fight of the fight so he defeated death and achieved his life. Don't let anybody rob you from what you deserve, which is to live a dignified and worthy life. Fight the fight of your life no matter how scary and difficult it is. Fight hard and try to prove to your enemies that you are able too and you deserve a life too, the life your enemy doesn't want you to have. Even if you don't make it and lose the fight, but at least you prove to everyone and yourself that you TOO went for the distance. Even a dignified death is better than a worthless life.
Max, awesome post about Rocky and Adrienne, I couldn't agree more. I'd only add that Rocky DID get knocked down, but then he stood up again before being counted out and continued fighting! Apollo was the better fighter and could knock down Rocky, but he could never KEEP Rocky down (KO).
The greatest motivational movie ever created.. no matter the odds no matter the situation.. this movie taught me to never quit and keep going. Thank you Sylvester Stallone for making this masterpiece
Adrian briefly closing her eyes at 5:52 packs such an emotional punch where no words are said because none are needed. The emotion of those 4 seconds with her simply closing her eyes and opening them again is simply amazing and yet another part of why this movie was just so real.
it is such a subtle scene, so wonderful that it needs no words. When an actor feels his part, it shows, and Thalia did it. before you close your eyes she has an expression when closing and reopening them, her facial expression changes subtly and his face shows a feeling of pride for Rocky. That scene is just brilliant
Shire actually has two amazing back-to-back scenes here - the shot just before closing her eyes is also fantastic, when she realizes Rocky has hit the mat, and she looks away, turns even further as if she is going to escape, then forces herself to stay. It's a combination of great wordless acting and brilliant editing.
Mickey yelling "down, down, stay down" as a way to protect his fighter just as Rocky struggles to get up and Adrian almost sheds a tear is absolutely magical
Do you think Mickey meant ‘stay down a little longer and catch your breath’ Or did Mickey mean ‘Stay down - you proved you could hang - that’s enough now’
@@PorkchopPeteprobably wanted to stop the fight. He just cant bring himself to throw the towel. In Round 15 he suggested the idea but Rocky said "if you stop the fight i'll kill ya!"
Small note, but I love how Weathers plays the beat immediately after his unexpected Rd 1 knockdown. His concern isn’t his opponent at this point in the match, it’s embarrassment. The way he looks into the crowd for a read says it all without saying anything. This is such a great scene.
ZF12 he lost, but in the end, it didn’t matter to him. He told Adrian that he wanted to go the distance to prove to everyone he isn’t some bum, and he did go the distance.
Damn the way Carl Weathers thinks he won and is dismayed and almost deflated that Rocky gets up...always brings chills to my spine. Amazing acting by Carl Weathers
When Rocky got knocked down for the last time, that was amazing. Mickey telling him to stay down because he didn't want him to get hurt anymore, but when Rocky said don't stop the fight, Mickey just said "you want it, go" like any father would to their son even if it hurts the dad to watch. Adrian just watching as he gets up, conflicted because she doesn't want him to get hurt anymore, but knows he needs to make it to the end. And Apollo realizing he was in the ring was someone who will take everything he has to dish out and keep on coming. All Rocky wanted to do was prove that he was more than a bum off the streets, they gave him a shot and he took it.
+martyc909 I was always under the impression that Mickey said stay down because he wanted Rocky to have as much time to rest as he could because the ref hadn't even started counted until he moved apollo away.
The final scene of this wonderful movie is just oozing with symbolism and I've never really heard anyone discuss it. Adrianne walking out of the locker room with light and the safety of a security guard into the darkness of the arena by herself, looking back, but realizing she has to move forward and she stops closes her eyes and subtly lifts her eyebrows when she knows she needs to go to Rocky and she's no longer afraid. Adrianne starts to run towards the ring to see Rocky and her hat is knocked off her head, she looks back again but doesn't have to keep her head covered anymore. And finally going into the crowded ring. Conti's music just makes it that much better
Rocky 1 - going the distance
Rocky 2 - proving you can beat the best
Rocky 3 - Face your fear
Rocky 4 - Fight for revenge
Rocky 5 - Prove you can still brawl
Yea, that's one thing about this movie that makes it the best of the series. All of the others, you know he's going to win the last fight of the movie. Here, he knows winning is hopeless, but gives his all anyway. After this one I like #3.
"If I keep the distance and the bell rings and I am still standing, at that moment, I will know for the first time in my life that, I was not just one more wanderer in the neighborhood." - He just wanted to know that.

Why did Apollo say that?
@@chazdoit Probably he got so beaten up and tired that at the moment he wasn't keen to repeat it.
Pretty much. The outcome of the match was an afterthought. He came. He fought. He stood. That was good enough for him.
Rocky was a grind love story set in the boxing world
Amazing we got to see Mickey Ward and Arturo Gatti do Rocky in real life.
Its one of the reasons why the Editors won the Academy Award.

Amazing

You're right on in the way he acted toward and treated Adrian, but (and not to play devil's advocate) you gotta see it from his perspective. Nearly everyone fails to mention Talia Shire's performances throughout the Rocky films which were exceptional

Good point! And that why it was such a good (and successful) movie since we are are treated to real life yet get a lesson in perseverance and self respect.
Don’t forget he won the love of his life too
Yo be fair Rocky wasn’t the good guy because there was no villain he was the protagonist the main character and apollo was the antagonist because he influenced Rocky and changed him if it wasn’t for him Rocky wouldn’t have got those moments and the crowd would have never loved him
What really moves me is why Rocky gets up after the big hit in the 14th round. Not to maybe win the fight, cause that didn’t matter to him. But to prove to himself that he could do it. That he could go the distance and for the first time in his life actually accomplish something meaningful. Winning is subjective. He didn’t win the fight in the ring, but won his own personal fight in life.
For the 1st time in his life he knew he wasn't just another bum from the neighborhood.
For all intensive circumstances a draw against a champion is a win… Even going to the judges could be a win showing his perseverance…
Still inspiring as fuck 40 years later

I think Apollo winning was a fair result, sure Rocky won the last round but it was too little too late, he would've needed to knock him out. Apollo was the better fighter for the majority of the match

Rocky wasn't a sports movie. It was a love story.
Friendly Neighborhood Bobby the first film absolutely agree.
Friendly Neighborhood Bobby yeah just a low budget movie as sly was unknown.more about the suffering of the partner outside the ring
a love story between a iron chin and a dozen of fists, awesome.
I'd say a life story

Every one thinks that rocky lost in this move, He may have technically lost the fight on points but he had won his self respect and the love of a good woman, In my book's he was a winner.
That the decision was barely audible and Rocky not caring if he won or not show that he did win just by going the distance.
They both won.
The movie itself doesn't care who won, that was never what it was about.
백지 apollo himself says that in rocky 2
Don't forget the fact that in "Rocky II" HE said the fans say Rocky won.
It's one of the best endings for a film, ever
+ComandoPadentro I tear up like a little girl every time I watch this movie.
+Brian Scholla me too my friend... me too.
+ComandoPadentro Same. Just so damn good.
+ComandoPadentro Yeah Stallone was awesome, too bad the Adrian actress sucked with her emotionless "rocky!".
This is the most realist and passionate fight in the entire Franchise

This is the most powerful moment of the whole film.

Creed: aint gonna be no rematch, aint gonna be no rematch
2 seconds later
Creed: by no, i really mean yes

I won the fight but I didnt' beat him!!! - Apollo Creed
This is one of the greatest films of all time. Every Rocky movie is pretty great, but 2-6 are great because they are hilarious and cheezy. The original Rocky however is a legitimately great film, probably one of the most inspirational movies you can ever see.
I think 6 is a great one, it's an underdog story that is more compelling than 2 -5 because of his age.
The movie is totaly wrong because is was based from chuck wepners fight against ali.
Ars Gui It was based off, he still didn't win but he went the distance like The Bayonne bleeder did.
+Gojira5400 its real pool boxing in this fake movie
What? I don't understand.

Rocky 4 ^^^
***** I think his name is Chuck Wepner.
It says it all in the movie "there ain't gonna be no rematch" "I don't want one"
That moment when Rocky gets flattened by Creed and even Mickey is just telling him to just stay down is one of the most epic scenes in film history. Following by his refusal to give in and Apollo's dumfounded reaction with that score in the background - it's just a glorious moment.
I just posted basically the same thing. Mickey telling Rocky to stay down always gets to me very poignant

Cigar Dave an old friend of Sly’s from his days in the porn business.
Literally helping from the sidelines
Look at the techniques
The way creed dances around and throws fast jabs is reminiscent of Ali's style. The way balboa curves and throws long punches is the same way Marciano fought.
definetely
much of the boxing element of the plot was based on muhammad Ali vs chuck wepner
I mean well considering that the character Rocky Balboa's hero and inspiration is Rocky Marciano in the film, kinda makes sense. As well as Sly Stallone being a huge fan of Rocky Marciano xDD
I always thought Rocky Balboa was was a character composed of Marciano and Graziano.

This comes back around in the 1st Creed movie when Rocky explains to Adonis in the mirror scene that the greatest opponent will always be yourself
Love how Paulie argues with the security as a distraction to sneak Adrian into the ring.

Rocky vs Apollo: ruclips.net/video/JeOkYRhZ0I0/видео.html
Powerful stuff my friend. I do the same
They called Rocky a "bum" a "loser" a "waste of life".
You know this is fake right?
Very nice my friend, thumbs up !
They wouldn't let him join in any reindeer games
Yeah but did you know rocky is based off of chuck wepner
Max, awesome post about Rocky and Adrienne, I couldn't agree more. I'd only add that Rocky DID get knocked down, but then he stood up again before being counted out and continued fighting! Apollo was the better fighter and could knock down Rocky, but he could never KEEP Rocky down (KO).
The greatest motivational movie ever created.. no matter the odds no matter the situation.. this movie taught me to never quit and keep going. Thank you Sylvester Stallone for making this masterpiece
The five seconds from 5:57 to 6:02 encapsulates this sentiment and the entire franchise, really
Adrian briefly closing her eyes at 5:52 packs such an emotional punch where no words are said because none are needed. The emotion of those 4 seconds with her simply closing her eyes and opening them again is simply amazing and yet another part of why this movie was just so real.
So true Mike.. Nice observation
it is such a subtle scene, so wonderful that it needs no words. When an actor feels his part, it shows, and Thalia did it. before you close your eyes she has an expression when closing and reopening them, her facial expression changes subtly and his face shows a feeling of pride for Rocky. That scene is just brilliant
It's a moment of prayer as well that potentially provides Rocky with a mystical assist from somewhere up there.
Shire actually has two amazing back-to-back scenes here - the shot just before closing her eyes is also fantastic, when she realizes Rocky has hit the mat, and she looks away, turns even further as if she is going to escape, then forces herself to stay. It's a combination of great wordless acting and brilliant editing.
she doesnt want to watch Rocky get beat but she opened her eyes to see it through and go the distance like what Rocky is doing.

Small note, but I love how Weathers plays the beat immediately after his unexpected Rd 1 knockdown. His concern isn’t his opponent at this point in the match, it’s embarrassment. The way he looks into the crowd for a read says it all without saying anything. This is such a great scene.
When I was a kid and first saw this, I thought Rocky had won. For some reason, now that I'm older and know he lost, it somehow makes it better.
I RECALLED WHEN FURY GOT IN THE FIRST FIGHT
Still brings tears to my eyes. So much heart and spirit. Bill Conti is a genius for scoring that movie and especially that scene. Going the distance.
