I own an Agency. Some languages do NOT have certified interpreters, so we cannot always send a certified one. And also, when a court asks you for a Bengali interpreter the night before and you can't adjourn the case, you do what you need to do.

      Absolutely true!

I'd add that having certified interpreters on the roster DOES NOT mean we can guarantee availability at all times!

Hi. Im a Brazilian in New York. Going for the oral test part for interpreter. I have not done any course or certification because I dont know of any in English Portuguese. Im studying on my own and using my knowledge in Paralegal Studies in the USA and my knowledge of Law in Brazil to try as an Interpreter. Any tip is welcome. Any opportunity is also very welcome. Im available for interpreting by zoom so I can build up my experience. Please feel free to advise me or help me to become a good reliable interpreter. Thanks Sue

1:17:53 that is just crazy. Think about it.
In order for government to save money US courts would outsource court interpreters as UK. I think sentences should be appealable and probably a complaint can be filed against the judge for allowing outsiders who are unfamiliar with US legal system (e.g., like hiring interpreters from Peru because they're cheaper) who have no formal training or education in US court interpreter school and who do not even live in USA to interpret in American courtrooms for an American defendant non-English speaker would be liable.
    Think about it.
It looks completely reckless on the judge for allowing such nonsense; judge may even be disbarred for that.

Imagine, 9 years ago there already was remote interpreting, now interpreters don't even move out of their homes in order to interpret . With a few exceptions , of course!

Interesting note about Judges not respecting the interpreter. Often, it is a power dynamic. Working many years in the legal field, many attorneys won't respect subordinates even though they may have decades more experience than them. This is a miscarriage of justice and often interferes with due process due to one-upmanship battles that detract from the case at hand.

To be a certified court interpreter it's more important who you know than what you know!

Oh, that is the case? I struggle to figure how I cannot make all the points necessary, I do not understand how they grade the testing. There is no training, no glossary and no preparation that is adequate for the purpose. Sadly.
