When we started doing this band thing fourteen years ago, I had no idea where it would take me. I mean, it wasn't that long ago that we were still sleeping on the floor of a van driving through the night, playing for five kids at a youth group, you know? And now, we're playing to arenas of people.
The thing that I've been thinking about lately is remembering that the shows that might be the best for my career are actually the ones that are most likely the most dangerous for my heart.
I don't know if you know this but it's not a healthy thing to stand up on a stage and get applauded by an arena of people. It's dangerous because so quickly we believe it's about "me." We used to gather right before we ever played a show and we would pray: "God use me, use us, use our band."
And then we started playing these big shows with all these other artists, you know, I started to realize that my prayer, though verbally was the same, it had taken a new form in my heart.
Really what I was praying is "God use me more than everyone else."
One day a couple of years ago we were praying before one of these festivals and all of a sudden I felt God tap my shoulder saying "hey bro, what if I want to use the other bands?"
"You can use them.....just use me more."
Suddenly I realized that I actually had turned being used by God into my real savior. I was using being used. God said: "man quit praying that I use you, just pray that I move...and if I use you fine, but then that way if I use someone else you won't be jealous, you'll actually be able to participate in the joy of my kingdom come."
Like Mother Theresa said, you know, she said: "We can do no great things, just small things with great love."
And that's what I'm realizing lately, this ministry stuff gets bigger and bigger -- but as ministry gets bigger - it also needs to get smaller.
I mean, look at Jesus, right? Yeah, He fed 5,000, but only pastored 12. By today's standards, His ministry was an epic failure. And we think that way, when you're just saying "God Your kingdom come, use anybody you want" - what's ironic is you actually get more opportunity to serve because you're not looking past those little thankless, applauds opportunities that God gives you every day to be a gift.
If you don't want to hold a toilet brush, you got no business holding a microphone. And maybe you need to stop praying for God to use you, and just pray that he moves. And that way we don't miss out on the joy of the kingdom coming cause - it comes. I hope you got eyes to see it and be a part of it. Even it means you're not the star.
One of my biggest spiritual problems lately is being like "look how good of a Christian this person is. Look how much they do for God." And I freak out because I feel like I'm not that great. I beg God to use me. Instead of thinking why can't I be like them I need to rejoice in their ministry and actually look around for mine. I worry so much that I miss opportunities. He's not going to use us all the same. It's okay if I don't feed the 5,000.

Amen! I've felt the same sooo much, it feels good to have God show that someone else knows how it feels and more importantly, for Him to show the truth of the matter!
"I was using being used!" This is right on with praise and worship leading today. Let the Holy Spirit take hold of the room. We will be used in accordance with it! I love this:
"If you're not willing to hold a toilet brush you shouldn't be able to hold a microphone."

The fact you are sharing it with us is an excellent testimony, and now also we can pray for you too!
This is true because when we are applauded by people, we would feel that it's about us, and its not. We need to remember that all the glory should be be given to our Lord Jesus Christ who gives us that will.
God uses music in powerful ways. He uses all kinds of music. Music touches the spirit!
Last year I wrote a song about being "invisible" for God. Because I realized, just like this video said, I would pray "God use me!!!" Then I would turn around and think "I am now God to this person." That is a very dangerous position to put yourself in. You start to think and feel like you are the only one to save people. It's like you think your words are very important and if you mess up no one will hear God's voice. You build yourself up, but then any little thing can cut you down. Your voice is not God's voice, so you can't change people. Only God can change people.

You are 100% right. I've been guilty of having this kind of attitude, particularly within the last 2 semesters I've been at college. So devastating when you mess up, you know, & then you beat yourself up & have difficulty moving forward to where you should be heading/should've been heading all along. Thank God for this video journal of Mike Donehey's. It said a lot of stuff God's been quietly dealing with me about lately. Doesn't matter how long one's been a Christian or how much knowledge we've gained throughout the journey, we still need a LOTTA grace to help keep us from falling--and to get back up and straighten up when we do fall into wrong attitudes, etc. Thx for your good words, and God bless! --taraandavar
As I listen to your music (almost daily) ... I am thankful that your spend so much time walking in the Word.. Your songs say so much and I know all who Live in the Love of God hear God through your music. My family will continue to pray for the band..
Just went to first concert since I was in my early 30s and now just saw Tenth Avenue North with Mercy Me at a fair at Crawford County Fair. All I can say is The Trinity covered the fairgrounds! What people don’t know is I have epilepsy and have recently diagnosed with TIA (small stokes) and my husband in remission of cancer! If you know about epilepsy you know lights can cause seizures and lead to possibly stroke. However that night I was blessed never felt more like the person I used to be healthy and strong!!! And somehow the seats I booked were on the fairgrounds but supposed to be on the end so if I needed to leave I could just leave. However our seats were directly in the center perfectly and up close! Tenth Avenue played first which was AWESOME Mike came out to the crowd and was three rows back up on a chair singing to us all!!!! It was so great and his testimony was so moving I am now on my phone looking up and learning about the band and each member and their families. I was saved years back but my husband struggles and let me tell you watching and listening to your band and Mercy Me moved him in a way I had been praying for and we talked and listened to CD on the way home which was 2 hrs or more and has made an impacted so I know this was long but Thank You for your gift that you all share and look forward to bringing more people and my two grown girls to another concert!!! As a musician, I play and sing because of God, but sometimes, I'm also using being used to play and sing, now, I will pray that God will move to the people. Thank you Mike. Praise God.^_^

its funny i recently realized one of my prayers had become something else too…every time i said, "i pray this will happen, etc." what i was really saying was "i hope" or "I want" but not really asking God, just throwing out my wants. so now i have to think when i pray and change my words so i mean them sincerely

Do you remember us sharing the gospel with folk on the streets of French villages, in Marseille (the midnight swim) and on the plaza outside the Pompidou Centre?
