      I guess I could install Edge to download Firefox? But honestly, the default version of Firefox from the repos is enough for my needs...

    Speaking about dark paterns in Microsoft
    I recently discovered onedrive free says you are allowed to store up to 5gb but doesn't stop you if you go far above it, then hold your files hostage threatening they will delete it if you dont do it

    I'm gonna say it's an ad that has been smuggled in by the Linux foundation to push more people over the Edge to ditch Windows and migrate to Linux.
    And I approve of this conspiracy! 😂👍

    Thanks once again for another great, informative video. Big thumbs up!
    I'm a big fan of LMDE, but I do have one Windows 11 machine left, which I have debloated with Chris Titus Tech's script. It's night and day how much less terrible 11 is without all that telemetry and Edge crawling around in the background. I also set it to not update for two years. Even though it's still fugly and gimped compared to the sweet freedom of Linux, it's so much lighter and not annoyingly in my face anymore...so it's tolerable.
    The only function that two-year-old laptop performs is my gaming, and it's only because of my laziness that it's not on Nobara or Garuda already, mainly because my internet stinks and I haven't gotten down in the weeds to transfer my Steam without having to re-download. It's on the list, and I will never wonder what the next system castration from Microsoft will be.

      If your Steam library is on a different partition than your OS (as it should be: separate your OS from your files!), then you can just install Linux and edit the fstab file to permanently mount the ntfs partition with your Steam library with the necessary rights to run the games from it, no re-installation needed.
      Unfortunately, I can't explain how to that in a YT comment, but I was able to find a guide that worked for me as a Linux novice on the Steam forum, I believe. You gotta get the UUID of the partition and write it into the fstab, as well as the uid and gid of the current user (or all users), along with some other standard parameters.

      @@LRM12o8 yes I've seen those instructions also, but that's part of the next steps I haven't felt the inspiration to do yet. Too many other things in life going on to change things that haven't become that needful to change yet. I'll get around to it. Since I've de-Microsoft-ed Win 11 I'm in a decent comfort zone for now.

    Captain Obvious here is kind of behind the news right now. There are very few options in the world these days, you are the property of one of three companies - Google, Apple, Microsoft. These three ecosystems for devices, operating systems, and software are designed to lock you in and make you dependent on that ecosystem alone, with minimal interaction with the others, while they mine your data and sell you things you don't want and really don't need. Admittedly, Microsoft is not doing quite as good a job as the other two but it does have the overwhelming majority market share of desktop operating systems at the moment. That is little to no alternative to using these ecosystems but switching to Linux away from Chrome OS (Yes, we all know that chromos is Android and that Android is Linux), Mac OS (Yes, we all know the macOS is a similar to Linux being Unix based), or Microsoft Windows (Yes, we all know that Windows is rapidly leaning in the direction of Linux because it knows which way the wind is blowing) is only a tiny part of getting away from being the property of one of the three corporations. You would need to completely de-google your phone; stop using Hotmail, Outlook, Gmail, etc; stop using any of the chromium based browsers; and everything else that is required to get out but very few know how to do this, want to deal with doing this, or know how to do it.

    Someone shoud do a "Edging Browser"an Open Source Fork or Reverseng version from Ms Edge and discover that is a Chromium hahaha

      I wish Edge still had its own engine instead of the Chromium base. It was optimized particularly well on Windows 10 before they changed it.

    I appreciate the shout-out.
    Maintaining a server is pretty easy: keep it connected and powered on. Even I have a home server. Setting it up isn't that hard, either. Install a few daemons. It's (arguably) easier if it's already been set up beforehand. The only reason I include "(arguably)" is because it's generally a bit easier to troubleshoot if you installed everything yourself. Maintaining 15 is just more of the same. It's a pretty passive job 95% of the time, especially if it's just running on Linux and doesn't do automatic updates.
    If you need three browsers because of a firewall, your firewall isn't configured correctly for your use case. Worst case you should need two. Appropriate use of Incognito mode will delete browsing info after you close the window. I'd understand needing 3+ browsers if you were a web dev, but you're not.
    Using Nemo instead of df to check disk space is pretty weird. I get that the Cinnamon terminal (or whatever you're using) has ugly colors, but you can change the ugly defaults in an rc file. My guess is you rarely touch the terminal, especially in X or Wayland.
    An advanced user would do things differently than almost always through the GUI. CLI/TUI is often a lot faster and harder to mess up (by clicking the wrong thing), which is why it's preferred by most power users. If you type something wrong, generally the program won't even run. I can understand the advantage of GUI for tasks like editing video and still images, but stuff like file management and other sysadmin tasks is a bit inefficient.
    Instead of getting angry, you could take the opportunity to learn. I understand that some people are terrified of the console and your channel is about switching, but truly educating users is more than just telling them which button to press (especially as GUIs change).

    • @SwitchedtoLinux
      @SwitchedtoLinux  21 день назад +4

      Dude...you need to learn...particularly HOW TO BE A TEACHER. This is a video about a basic distro for people who are not advanced users. Making assumptions about my skill based on that video is actually short-sighted on your part.

    • @encycl07pedia-
      @encycl07pedia- 20 дней назад

      @@SwitchedtoLinux I wouldn't say I'm making assumptions. I'm drawing conclusions based on evidence presented to me. It's not the only video of yours I've seen. Maybe you really are an advanced user. In that case, there is still circumstantial evidence to the contrary. It's also possible you just aren't aware certain programs exist, which I totally understand as FOSS pretty much has zero marketing budget.
      I actually hope to learn from you, which is why I watch your videos. Many times I do (especially with tech news). I appreciate the feedback.
