- I am continuing to seal the house, using the traditional filling of the gaps between the logs - rye straw. I am also replacing the slats reinforcing the window openings. The old ones are unfortunately weak and rotten. I am embedding the new slats in the sockets and in the groove in the logs.

Yes, it's a good option, provided the time to make such an improvement myself doesn't take me longer than just using the tool :D.

I didn't treat the wood from insects because there are no really effective and safe products for humans.
This house is already more than 80 years old, it has not been treated, it is a little bit eaten by insects, but that doesn't bother me. After my repair, it should last another 50 years, and that's enough for me :).

Dziękuję za odpowiedź w sprawie wkrętów. Oglądając teraz opatulanie ścian słomą żytnią zastanawia mnie problem trwałości bowiem kiedyś to sam mieszkałem w domu gdzie strop był drewniany i wypełniony sieczką wymieszaną palonym wapnem czyli CaO i gliną. Bardzo ciepły. Obecność wapna zabezpieczała drewno i sieczkę przed wszelkimi żywimi organizmami. Co prawda z czasem palone wapno z powietrza pochłaniało parę i zmieniało się się w węglan wapnia, ale jakoś było to i nadal jest dobre rozwiązanie. Po zaimpregnowaniu drewna najtańszym i dobrym środkiem przeciwpalnym jest szkło wodne.
Nie obawiałbym się o trwałość słomy. Ta słoma która jest oryginalna ma już 80 lat i nic się z nią złego nie dzieje.

Could you use your circular saw to cut the sides of the vertical channels? 😮
This is what I would do if I were cutting them from scratch. But here I had situations where I just needed to even out the old groove - and that's definitely more accurately done with a chisel.

There is definitely a need to replace these window opening reinforcements, because the beam under the windows has been replaced. This means that the vertical reinforcements were not attached to the beams above and below the window - you can see in the video that I am making a nest in the lower beam.
