  • discovercatfish... Best technique for winter time blue catfishing, Once you're anchored on a spot give it 30-35 minutes, to see if you get any takers, if you get no bites it's time to move but you don't want to go far, the idea is to keep a scent trail for the catfish to follow, so bounding down is the best method, what this means, is pull your anchor up and move your boat down and re-anchor where you last placed your baits on the previous anchor. and cast out again, keeping your bait in the same scent trail just a little further down stream. Because some of these channel bends can be up to a half mile long, you may need to bound down 4-5 times until you find the fish

I stumbled onto this video 3 days ago. It was a day before my first catfish tourney and cold front came in dropping the temp 20 degrees and the water temp 10+. Below freezing both days everyone got skunked except your boy solely because of this technique. I was fishing from the bank never stayed longer than 30 minutes on a spot and located 2 hungry channels for the W. Thanks for the knowledge brother, so happy for your rebound to life you're an inspiration to me.

The "bounding down" strategy works. I've done it some on my home river (the James in VA) and pulled in some nice fish this way. If you're confident the stretch you're fishing holds big fish, there is no need to pull anchor and move a couple miles. Keep sliding down until you find an active pocket of fish.

I don't get to fish rivers. But, I fish good Blue Catfish lakes in North Texas (Lavon and Tawakoni). Just wanted to let you know even though most of your videos focus on river techniques, I really enjoy watching your videos. I hope to make to a river system one day, and your willingness to share your knowledge is much appreciated. Thanks for all you do for the sport and conversation of this great sport of Catch and Release of Trophy Blues!

So if you bound down, you might be passing over the top of fish that are moving up stream following the scent trail. Wouldn't it be better to bound up, so that any fish you pass over will be down stream of your bait, plus any that are traveling up with the scent trail can still find your bait? Is there a reason to prefer bounding down to bounding up?

+Sara Smith one can cast as far as one sits in a boat...easily... maybe use spinning depending on your skill level... 8 foot rod... east to whip a large chunk of bait 100 yards or more... frozen mackerel best... don't need weights... avoid weights if NOT in a moving river...

So I have always used fluorocarbon line but I'm thinking about using braided line for channel cats I live in Idaho and won't be catching anything over 20 pounds what's the best line strength? And also do you have to use leaders with braid or can you tie hooks directly to the braided line? Thanks :)
