How to replace spark plugs and wires on a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L V8 will be covered in this video. However, it is important to note that this exact method applies to all Chevrolet 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L engines from models ranging from the year 2000 - 2014.
Also, the general techniques I use in this video can be applied to any make and model. The tools needed to do this job is as follows;
- A 3/8 rachet
- A 5/8 spark plug socket
- A 1” extension
- Copper-based anti-seize lubricant
- Dielectric grease
- Hose grip pliers
- An assortment of wobble extensions
- A 3/8 cordless rachet
The first step in this job is to disconnect the spark plug wires. Begin up top using a twist and pull method to remove them. The bottom wires can be tougher to remove because the spark plug boots are rubber and they like to grip that porcelain on the spark plug.
This is especially true if it has been a while since it has been tuned up. The best way to remove the lower spark plug wires is to twist back and forth to break that bond. It may take a minute but after twisting for a bit, then try to pull it off, it should come free.
This is where the hose grip pliers come in handy. If you don’t have enough room to get a good pull with your hand, use the hose grip pliers. Slip it around the boot, gently work it back and forth and you can use the exhaust manifold as leverage to pry back on and pull it loose.
Make sure to save the metal-insulator sleeves as you’re going to slip them onto the new wires. Don’t ruin these insulator sleeves as they protect the wires.
Now we go onto removing the spark plugs. Here is where you use the spark plug socket, wobble extension, and flex head rachet. You can do this without a flex head ratchet or a wobble extension, however, it makes it a whole lot easier to do it with these. To make things go a little quicker, I throw my cordless air ratchet to remove the spark plugs faster.
Here’s a quick “Pro Tip” for removing these plugs. On the driver’s side of the engine, there is a lot of room to remove the plugs. However, on the passenger side of the engine, it’s another story. There’s a lot of hoses and wires in our way which makes the job a little more difficult.
Don’t let this intimidate you, this is when a good set of wobble extensions come in handy. Depending on your make and model, you might use different sizes, but you’ll be covered.
In regard to this particular 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L engine, the 2.5” works great for the first three plugs. For the back plug on the passenger side, the 1” extension or no extension at all works great. Start the rachet down low and not from above and slip your socket and extension on and then connect the rachet.
The spark plugs I’m replacing the old ones with are the ones that this vehicle rolled off the assembly line with. They do not require gaping. They are pre-gapped at the factory and they specify that you do not gap them.
This is where I apply the copper anti-seize on the threads before I install them. To install the new plugs using a socket and small extension makes the process a little easier. Thread them, in the same way, they came out.

If you actually put a torque wrench on it and torque it to the correct spec, in some applications, you'll realize it doesn't need to be as tight as you think it does.

Not saying I have more experience than this guy, but I always check the gap. I changed my plugs tonight and one was at .020 and another was completely crushed. There was no gap at all.

Thanks Josh, You made that look pretty simple. Those insulators on the plug wire are nasty. These new millenium vehicles are completely different from the old school chevy's when 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 was pretty much all you needed to know, between 200,000 and 300,000 miles is way better now days and greater gas mileage, but definitely a little more entailed to work on. Thanks again, Im working on a 2008 GMC Sierra 4.8 , currently experiecing the death wobble, very intermittant, can go for a week or 2, then ang on, any ideas ?

On an inline engine: the number one cylinder is located at the front of the engine, closest to the timing cover. On a V type engine: one cylinderhead is slightly forward of the other, toward the front of the engine. Cylinder number one is the forward most cylinder in that bank

Awesome vid! Very informative. But I ran into an issue... I have a 2009 Chevy Tahoe 5.3L...Basically the same exact truck as the video...I followed this video to the "T"...Ive changed plugs many times in the past on all sorts of vehicles, so I have a pretty good understanding. So The replacement was pretty simple. Pain in the butt as to be expected. Haha..I used NGK iridium plugs and Accell wires. Used dielectric grease and Anti seize. Once I was done and I fired up vehicle thats where my dreams were crushed. Lol...It is very rough idle and also is flashing CHECK ENGINE every so often. Im very confused. I tried my best to do a professional job. But truck runs worse than before. Any thoughts on why this happened?
A flashing check engine is a misfire. If you dindt have misfires before the spark plug and wire change, then it can only be one of those causing it. From experience, i can tell you that you should use the same sparkplugs that the factory uses, in this case is AC Delco, they are probaly even cheaper than the NGKs. Same for wires, use AC Delco on GM vehicles.
What siz wires did you buy for your avalanche i bought ac Delco 7mm and my engine is trembling with iridium plugs 0.04 gap.now i ordered 10.5 mm wires I'm scared to try them there huge but compatible there super wires jbtools

No matter how many times I change my spark plugs which is about 4 times since this videos done been made. I Always end up using this video as a reference. Side note I have a 2018 silverADOE but ever since 2019 are there any vehicles that are made without that bs automatic on off switch? Specifically chevy’s? Whenever you come to a stop light or what not and the vehicle decides to shut off while the ac just blows hot air around that feels amazing when it’s July and you live in southeast Ga and it’s only 100° with 90% humidity. And I’m by no means an expert mechanic but the newer vehicles get more unnecessarily complicated to work on yourself while simultaneously falling apart quicker than some random joker who married a stripper bc she said I love you after homie tipped her a $100 for 30 seconds of fun.
When replacing the spark plug wires are they all the same size for each side like if u had other ones which some are longer then other lmk thanks
On this engine they are all the same. However, many engines have them in all different sizes. Just depends on your engine
I would use the wires designed for your engine but if they're a little longer or shorter you'll be fine. Aftermarket wires are often not exactly the same size as the stock ones.
Should always do the Hard side first so it makes you know the job is getting easier the the hard beginning...

Absolutely. Depending on the make and model it can be easy to mix up the order. Howerver, these Chevrolet engines are very hard to mix up the order

When I add the new spark plugs it doesn’t matter which order I put them in because they’re new right? And if I bought new plug wires does it come with a new metal sleeve for the bottom boot? Or do I reuse the old ones

The order does not matter take them out and put them in . Reuse the old sleeves new Wires do not come with them. Torque is not critical just don't over torque them find a happy medium

I recently changed my sparkplugs after installing the car shook more than usual and kept giving me a blinking engine light and it gave a P0380 code could it be i installed the spark plugs incorreclty
