There is a new flood of fake 87A’s being sold on Facebook Marketplace right now. They’ve gotten a lot better. The box looks almost identical now and the capsule looks the same too. And they are true condensers, but not authentic Shure’s. There are still ways to tell though. You can tell by the outside box, the inside box, the pouch, the mic clip, the capsule, and the output cavity. I’m an expert now because I too bought a fake one lol, except I couldn’t return it. That’s what I get for falling for the too good to be true deal. I’m so dumb.
It’s ok buddy…I just bought the same fake in this video at the flea market for $25. That should have been the first giveaway! These fakes are designed to be convincing at first. It’s not until you see the details that it becomes obvious.
Thank you for this video. But, much more than decorative ring width, I'm interested in sound difference. Is there a chance for that kind of comparison?
@@marcgingergagne6701 Sorry but you're both wrong, 'cardioid' refers to the pick-up pattern, not the type of capsule - if you take the top off a genuine 87C it still has the 'tripod' arrangement identical to the genuine 87A in the video - if it looks like the fake one in the video, then it has a dynamic capsule and is a fake
At 0:28 Notice how it says 'sold by Andy Carson', when I bought mine it said Amazon and 'Amazon Export Sales LLC' and it was legit, so watchout for that. Regardless very useful video, thanks a lot!
hey guys, if you haven't heard the phrase, "You get what you pay for" be aware of buying brand names of anything kind from china or asia for that matter
I bought what I thought was a brand new, Beta 87A from Amazon in March 2019 for $240. I've been using it with a TASCAM US-2x2 pre-amp. I was surprised that it worked with and without phantom power, but not knowing a lot about pro microphones I didn't think too much of it. Now in November 2022 I ended up here to discover that my mic looks exactly like your fake. Sucks. I got duped, hard. Seller is long gone, but FWIW the seller's name is "Philip Edwards" (listing: Shure BETA 87A Supercardioid Condenser Microphone for Handheld Vocal Applications.) He had a total of 9 reviews of previous sales, all 5-stars. Not surprisingly, all 9 of those reviews were between March 1 and March 25, 2019. Then *poof*. He's gone.
Be careful buying pre-owned from the music big box stores. They shipped me counterfeits, the size and color were off. When returning them to my local GC, had to bring along one of my original authentic 87's. They only believed me and accepted the return when I insisted they open up one of the new 87's they had and compare it to the authentic one I brought along, and the fake one they sold me pre-owned online.
It was sold by Andy Carson and fulfilled by Amazon. Quite surprised it happened through Amazon, but they accepted the return and gave a full refund without further incident.
@@Lengsel7 It's not Amazon, it's the seller. Amazon is a platform on which anyone can sign-up to sell, pretty much like eBay - which most people seems to forget about. Try to get a refund from eBay for a counterfeit product... NOT gonna happen. Amazon cannot control all the products in all their warehouses.
Dear, I also found the fake Beta 87A mic. It is mentioned as a condenser microphone on the box. It is perfectly working without Phantom power. Whydo it call as condenser mic????? Why fake?????
Has anybody found fakes of this that are actually condensers i.e. does not work without Phantom power? If not, it is comforting to know that there is a dead giveaway.
I bought a fake one which actually is almost the same as the real one. It is also a condenser and requires phantom power to work. It actually sounds great. But the real one is a little better, but not much difference if you are using a good mixer.

@@solaiman15 good, so you did not get ripped off. If you buy a fake knowingly, make sure you remove any Shure logos off it so that it does not get mistaken. People say fakes can be good value for money, but how would you know? Just because it is a fake of a Shure, does not mean that it will sound anywhere near as good or even as good as a $10 mic. Luckily yours works well. So I take it you also own the real thing to compare?
Got one of these , on a second hand store, no bs , they told me it wasn’t the real thing. It was real real cheap so I bought it anyway. It’s just like this fake one. Works without phantom power . Not bad for twenty euros. Will use it in the rehearsal room, does its job good. Not planning on selling : p

awesome! just checked my Beta 87A and glad it was real! thank you for the video!

But did it sound OK?
Hola amigo, entonces el replica no es de condensador como el original?
This mic comes in cardioid and condenser. The condenser is 87a and the cardioid is 87c
Exactly!
These other people have it all wrong.
It is indeed a real 87……but not an A
It’s a C

GREAT video! Thanks for doing this. Craigslist has plenty of these on the site...some honest sellers disclose that they are fakes.
how does the fake one sound?
I bought one and it sounds worse than the cheapest mic I own. It’s a dynamic not a condenser. Totally unusable for pretty much any purpose.
why only shure mics being faked?
Because they're popular - no point in faking something hardly anyone buys

I've just been landed with one of these, I'm in the process of returning it
Shit I wanted an audio comparison hahahahaha
Is it 24v or 48v Phantom powered?
It will work on either
The fake was a dynamic mic and cost ten times cheaper.

That's the point; a REAL Shure 87a MUST have phantom power. The capsule is a cheap dynamic one in the fake. Sorry, you were rooked.
