- I have received a lot of comments from people interested in whether it is possible to change the battery in the awesome crank radio Sangean MMR 99.
Of course I accepted the challenge and tried to get the battery out.
In this video you can follow my steps in locating and releasing the battery.
Also, I show how to charge your phone with the radio. It is not possible before you change the factory default settings!

Yeah, I contacted Sangean asking why the battery was not user-replaceable and they said that it for a better water seal. I told them I didn't believe that was the reason, since I own a Sangean FB100 which has replaceable batteries and a better IP rating, and their shower radios have replaceable batteries. They had no response to that.
I suspect the real reasons are that it's cheaper (and less complex) to manufacture, they avoid any user-caused battery-related support or warranty issues, and if they're being a-holes it also allows them to void the warranty if the radio has been opened by the user. But sure, I could be wrong.
That’s a monster of a project. Get the Midland ER 310. It’s less of a toy than this radio, but very functional.
Yes, it was a tad bit difficult :) Have tried the Midland radio and like it too. Eton also has a radio that supports AAA batteries.
An emergency radio should have multiple ways of being powered and sealing a battery inside the case is not a wise choice. For that reason I prefer the Midland ER310 ruclips.net/video/Xp5kflkC8AA/видео.html
Said it in the review that it's much better to just get a powerbank for charging devices.
I don't see any problem with disassemble it, you made mistakes in doing so but that is fine.
And even if you broke it beyond repair that is also fine because you probably learned something from it.
We learn from our mistakes, hopefully 😛, don't put finger in high current devices tho.
So the reason that the battery isn't meant to be replaced is because you're expected to just buy a new
complete radio rather than just a generic battery. I don't really see a reason for it to be water resistant.
I mean, you probably will spend your time indoor or in a shelter to avoid rain anyway.
Because you don't want to get wet, cold and/or sick during bad times/crisis. Broadcasts would probably
be during certain hours so a wristwatch would make sense.
I still think that this thing isn't worth the moneys and that the crank is more of a gimmic.
Better to have a pocket radio running on two double AA's that lasts like 64 hours if the also mentioned RF-P50.
You'd spend much less moneys and you'd haul a much smaller load.
And you don't have to spend calories on handcranking the fekker when it's bad weather.
Just my thoughts.
Agree on a lot of points there mate. But the radio is awesome with really good sound. And using the battery as a multi-purpose energy source is clever.
I am however a bit confused why it was so difficult (comparing to the MMR 88) to change the battery.
Hoping to try out some of Sangeans pocket radios too!
@@Vardagsprepping Well the battery is on par with the smallest powerbanks and it is built-in because as I said.
They expect you to buy another radio when this battery charges too poorly. That way they can earn more money.
And realisticly this is what people do, they buy new all the time. Even when the function doesn't change, just look at smartphones.
Sometimes you'll buy a new smartphone just because it can't be updated it with new software. Isn't that the ultimate BS?
I think that you should look into pocket radios unless you really want to overpay on features.

I admit I’m a bit intimidated by the battery change. It’s so involved! I sure hope the battery lasts a long time, because the radio will be nothing but an expensive brick if I have to replace that battery. 😳😩
Actually is very easy to upgrade if you know what you are doing. You have two battery choices,
1. High quality 18650 type 3450 mAh with soldering tabs
1. High quality 21700 type 5000 mAh with soldering tabs but you need to do a little mod to fit as this battery is bigger.
Which brands of high quality 18650 types would you suggest? Thanks :)

Min mmr-99 FM/dab laddar inte alls via solcellerna eller handcrank, betyder det att batterierna är dåliga redan från start? (Radion är 2 månader gammal och har laddats kanske 10 ggr.)

That is not hard at all compared to products like JBL tuner, which is almost impossible to open without breaking something. Sure, you can't change battery on the go for extended runtime, which is a let down, but it's still changeable when battery is used up, so the radio does not become junk the moment battery no longer holds a charge.
Hur ofta behöver man byta batteriet tror du?
Inte så ofta. Ett 18650 klarar av 300-500 laddningscykler så det beror ju såklart på hur ofta du behöver ladda batteriet. Men Anders har sådana batterier som han har använt 10-12 år. Det viktigaste är att du inte låter de bli helt tomma eftersom de då kan sluta att fungera.

Will not buy this "emergency" radio. No way do I want to go through all that in an emergency to drop in another battery. Many radios are waterproof with a small door with O Ring seal and fast and easy drop-in a fresh 18650 or a few AA's. I am surprised and disappointed Sangean messed up in their designp
