I do everything that you say especially the picture thing is important because they always look different in the pictures, and then you could see where changes could be made. Glad that I know I'm doing things properly
Some people make tesserae out of tile adhesive which means you can add any colours you like and also make stripes by layering different coloured adhesives. Once it is dry the adhesive can be cut like normal tesserae using tile nippers.
I wouldn't paint over them as the colour would not be as stable as non-painted tesserae. However, if you really need to paint over them then use acrylic clic paint.
Thank you so much for your advice! Your work is beautiful. I'm wondering if you'd have any tips for me on a project I'm planning. We're installing a statue on a pedestal we're creating. We plan to pour a flat concrete tabletop for the pedestal, and put a mosaic surface around the statue. Does it make sense to cover the entire surface with thin set mortar and place our glass tiles (even if the top will not be completely covered with tiles)? Or is it ok to just put the glass tiles directly into the wet concrete ?
Sounds like an interesting project. I would choose to place my glass tiles into thin set on top of the concrete because it would give me time and control to place the pieces. However, technically, there is no reason not to do it the other way too!
@@HelenMilesMosaics Thank you for your quick reply! I also took your advice on joining a Facebook group and I'm finding that very useful and inspiring. Very much appreciating and enjoying your other videos as well. :)

I am baffled. You showed the face in beginning. No pattern under neath. You laid it out first. You had to take apart to glue it on sub straight. There are somany pieces how did you relay it perfectly? No one shows that. Yes I truely get the phone aspect, fine for a small project but with large pieces it does not work for me. Especially the subtle nuances of shading. Besides history did not have cell phones. You are an excellent teacher. I am just getting started in my retirement. Fingers crossed. I do do stained glass but I use patterns.
Thanks for your comment Pauline. You're right, this video doesn't cover the subject of planning a mosaic before you start to glue. I will take a note of it and add to my list of future videos.
As a new mosaic-er, I appreciate this wisdom you've shared!
You are so welcome!
I LOVE MOSAICS. THIS ART IS SO ENDURING AND EVERLASTING
Me too - I never get tired of them! 😀

Good to know! 😀
I love the mosaics in the background of the opening. Are they done by Ms. Miles or one of her students?
Anything in my studio is made by me! 😀
So amazing! I am in awe of your work and your videos are invaluable to me. Thank you so much!! 💕

My favorite tip is not to expect perfection!
😀😀😀
Anyone know what the material/colors are at the 5 minute mark?
It is marble!
The one at about the 5:00 mark is gorgeous! Could you tell me what the green material is?
I have just realised that I haven't replied to you for which I apologise! The green is a kind of stone which I bought in Greece.
Have you tried gypsum board?
No, I haven't but lots of people do use it and it's a great surface for mosaic.
Dear Hellen can you do a video of how to make a nice mosaic on a stone? Like a flower on a stone
Sure! I will add that to my list of upcoming videos :)
@@HelenMilesMosaics thanks so much. ♥️
And is there a way to make your own tiles from scratch? Something that looks nice and pretty

I wish I watched your video earlier it would have saved me a lot of time invested in searching for the things that you mentioned in one video. 🤣
Can you paint the tiles to the color your wanting? How do I you do that properly
I wouldn't paint over them as the colour would not be as stable as non-painted tesserae. However, if you really need to paint over them then use acrylic clic paint.
Hi Helen, are there any mosaic making books that you would recommend?
Loving your work!
Thanks! :) My favourite book is Mosaic Techniques, a step by step guide to professional results by Emma Biggs
Thank u Helen,my name is Helen also😃
