    Hi Julie, I read your reply to Shrvani about using the resin. A resin artist I spoke to recently said that resin has been used as a final coat on mosaics for a long time (??). After the conversation I used a resin coat on a piece of finished work. I had already used a grout sealer. I actually liked the impact of the resin. I appreciated Shrvani's question and further wonder what you think of using resin after grout-sealing. I really enjoy your tutorials and it is all so helpful when continuing on the road of doing mosaics.

      Hi Trish! Thank you for your kind words about my videos. I'm glad they're helpful and you're finding value in them. I've been using resin over mosaic art for 15ish years. I love it and hate it. It's a gorgeous look, but a pain to work with if it gets anywhere but exactly where you want it to be. There's absolutely no forgiveness. I've never used resin on a sealed mosaic. Okay Julie...forget my first comment on another video I just watched. I found this one regarding sealing my outdoor mosaic. My mistake were many and who knows how long my four year pool surround project will last. So far it's lasted seven years. I will be 'trying to Muriactic Acid' the grout in sections; let it dry and then seal it all and rub off the sealer on the glass tiles. It will be a ton of hot, hard, work, but it is a masterpiece and I want it to last as long as it can. For my new wall pieces in a different house, I will do things much differently, thanks to you. Two projects are outdoor benches that are permanent structures so I could not bring them inside to do the project and simply needed to wait the requisite curing times for thin set mortar and grout before I could seal, cross fingers for no dust storms, bird fly-overs or rain storms. So far I've been lucky!

I am making a chessboard with mosaic tiles and grout, I want to seal it all together and have been weighing up different options. Epoxy resin is looking very difficult so I'm wondering if I can achieve a glossy & 'pulled together' look with grout sealer.

    I think you answered a question that nobody else has directly, or indirectly, addressed:
    "Can I use my thin set (Mapei Mosaic Glass Tile Mortar) as a grout?"
    From what you said, it seems that I can .
    So then, my next question is:
    Should I use sealer on it?
    Again, it sounds like I can & should.
    (My application is a mosaic glass backsplash, in a kitchen. I've asked several tile pros on here and got no answers)

    • @JulieWeilbacher
      @JulieWeilbacher  2 года назад +1

      Hi David! Yes, you can definitely grout with thinset. You can even tint or color it (ruclips.net/video/Qp_QnPTy3_Y/видео.html). I ALWAYS seal *grout* that will be subjected to water, weather, mold, mildew....those sorts of environments. A kitchen backsplash, especially near the sink, would fall into that category for me. Hi Mrinalini! I apply the sealer, and then immediately clean off the tesserae. You aren't wiping off the sealer from the grout. That immediately starts penetrating the grout. But it's the tesserae that need cleaning off because otherwise the sealer will just sit on top of it. Not a good look! To wipe off the tesserae you could use paper towels, an old t-shirt, or an old towel. Keep creating and I'm so glad you're here!🔥

      Hi Janice! First of all, welcome to the world of mosaic! You're doing great!🙌 Now regarding your coaster, it's hard to say since I haven't seen your finished piece. But a few things come to mind. It's important to make sure there's enough contrast between your tesserae and grout/background. And yes, as you mentioned, sometimes when you use really small tesserae the design can get lost, especially if the pieces are far apart and there's not enough contrast to the grout/background. With these things in mind, take a different approach to your next mosaic. Keep creating and I'm so glad you're here!

    I looking for more info on sealing your tesserae before you adhere them with thin set. I understand there’s different sealers for natural stones before you can use them, but what about low-fired ceramic tiles,etc.
    I’m trying to utilize my own pottery pieces and shards into my mosaic projects. What can I seal them with to prep them for use?
    I’ve seen some ceramic/porcelain/cement sealer. Would that work?
    And is there anything else besides white glue to seal wood for light use outside? I’m generally of
    the opinion that everything I make should be able to withstand being in my tropical but mercurial climate here in New Orleans, even if it’s only used indoors 😂.
    Am I going into overkill sealing everything? Or will the thinset and grout generally seal everything?
    I already use the most fortified thinset and grout with sealer.

    • @JulieWeilbacher
      @JulieWeilbacher  8 месяцев назад

      Hi Jeannine! For the substrate, you don't want to use wood for outdoor mosaics. It expands and contracts which can mean trouble for your mosaic artwork. As for sealing your tesserae, if it's glazed are you asking about painting it with another product? I would first look at the glaze container you used on the tile to see what it says about acceptable environment conditions after firing. If you do decide to paint on a ceramic sealer, make sure it's acceptable for outdoors. Keep creating and I'm glad you're here!⭐

    Your video came on very right time to me. I am trying my first glass mosaic on wooden base. It will stay indoor all the time, but weather would be very dry, almost 6-7 months in year, do you really think i shall go for sealing to avoid cracks, etc because of weather conditions?

      @JulieWeilbacher  2 года назад +1

      Hi Sandeep! I would seal the wood. You mentioned you're in a climate that's dry 6-7 months out of the year....but what about the other months? Sealing wood for mosaic a great habit to get into and no matter where your mosaic is (hey, you might move to a more humid climate one day!), you'll know that the mosaic shouldn't have any issues. When starting a new mosaic project, ask yourself, what can I do for my mosaic that will help it last a very long time? Do those things and you'll have many, many years of enjoyment from your mosaic. Hi Sandy! The sun/outdoor environment causes resin to yellow over time. So you’ll want to look for a resin that’s specifically for outdoor use. As for applying resin to a 3D piece?🙈 I can’t imagine that going well, plus it would be very frustrating. Keep creating and I’m glad you’re here!🔥

    Hello! Thank you for your video. Very informative. We are doing an outdoor mosaic project in south Florida. At a community garden we are placing mosaics on top of concrete seats. We have been told to use Fusion Pro Single Component Grout (already mixed) which says “ready to use - never needs sealing” but after watching your video, I’m thinking that we should go ahead and seal it anyway. As it can’t hurt to give it an extra layer of protection as it will be exposed to high traffic, dust, soil, rain, and who knows what more. What do you think?

    • @JulieWeilbacher
      @JulieWeilbacher  2 года назад +1

      Hi Elsi! Thanks for your kind words about the video. I'm in South Florida too (Miami!) so I know how careful you need to be with your outdoor mosaic project. I haven't used the pre-mixed grout you're referencing, but yes, the manufacturer does state it never needs sealing. Yet, we know South Florida weather. I would suggest doing a sample test using the pre-mixed grout, and then once fully cured, try sealing it. It may be that the grout won't allow the sealer to soak in/penetrate at all. Good luck! Hi there! It's best to use sealer on fresh (read: new) grout. You can certainly try to clean the grout before sealing. Keep in mind, if you apply sealer on old grout, you'll seal in whatever's on it, permanently....dirt, oil, etc. If you don't care about that and you're just trying to protect the life of the mosaic then yes, you can apply sealer. Hi!
    Thank you! Love your videos! My sister and I are doing an outside ceramic tile shower pad 36x56. Although we are designing it indoors we have to take it outside to adhere it to the cement pad. We will grout after the thinset is cured. Can we cover it with a plastic drop cloth tent to protect it from the elements without creating more humidity and interfering with the thinset drying? (We are in Cocoa Beach so the same humidity as Miami.)Then if the thinset can cure being covered in plastic, if we make a plastic tent over the shower pad after we seal it will it cure in 3 days or take longer because it’s tented in plastic and exposed to the humidity outside? I know it’s ideal to seal indoors but with this project it’s impossible. 🤷‍♀️
    Any feedback you can give us is greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

      Hi kristianlewis576! Grout sealant will usually roll off your tesserae (as long as it's glazed). If it's not glazed then the sealant will soak into your tesserae. Buuuuut, it may not completely roll off your glazed tesserae therefore it would dry on top and create an unfortunate spotty coating. If you want to completely seal your mosaic then resin would be the option of choice. You can watch that video here >> ruclips.net/video/E2FxP5WKcD4/видео.html. • @JulieWeilbacher
      @JulieWeilbacher  2 года назад

      Hi Elize! Yes, in general, if your stepping stones have been outside for a long time it's probably too late to seal them. Ideally, you want to seal the grout when it's 'fresh' and hasn't been exposed to the elements outdoors. HOWEVER....here is an option: you could clean the grout as best you can, and then seal them. I can't guarantee the outcome in the long-run, but they'd look better in the short-term and have a sealer on the grout. Remember, the sealer will 'seal in' whatever is on the grout.
