  • French President Emmanuel Macron has declared a state of emergency in New Caledonia after multiple people were killed as violence engulfs the French territory.
Riots broke out in the capital Noumea over a new bill that will let French residents who have lived in there for more than 10 years vote in provincial elections - a move some local leaders fear will dilute the indigenous Kanak vote.
Multiple pro-independence leaders have been under house arrest and TikTok has been banned, as hundreds of security forces are sent from France to try and restore order.
The Pacific also spoke with Islands Business correspondent Nic Maclellan about what’s needed to restore peace in New Caledonia.
