The first rule of postmodernism . . . is that whenever you define 'postmodernism,' a postmodernist will say 'no, you don't understand postmodernism' and then re-define it.
The second rule of postmodernism . . . is that five minutes later, the postmodernist will offer the same 'wrong' definition of 'postmodernism' that you just offered.
The third rule of postmodernism . . . is that someone will respond to this comment that I 'know nothing about postmodernism.'

This was great and wonderful!! And I honestly cannot wait for the next ones. I really appreciate the readings lists too. Also, the matchstick was great - it made easier for me to understand the modernism and postmodernism, and the mention of Newton and Einstein helped too because I know more about physics than literature theory and that parallel helped a lot. I do believe that kids and students these days should be encouraged more to connect the different things they study and the way you did the lecture is another proof of that. Do I even make sense? Oh, well, thank you! It was lovely!

I am retyping my comment for umpteenth time because I want to express how fucking great this is. This is something I (a state school A level student) have been dreaming of finding on RUclips. Content fabulous (v v v v interesting), style marvellous (not dumbing-down or patronising, but clear and build well). I am genuinely reeling (a little giddy with excitement) with how brilliant this. Thank you so so much for working so hard to create this (as a long term viewer I'm a little emotional with how proud I am of you), I'll be using it to develop my extra curricular reading for uni applications. You are honestly a marvel 💕

In the realm of thought, two movements arise,
Modernism and Postmodernism, in the philosopher's guise,
Distinct in their ways, they paint a tale,
Of contrasting philosophies that bewilder and regale.
Modernism, a quest for truth, a seismic shift,
An age of reason, logic's powerful gift,
Challenging norms, it sought to define,
Innovative thoughts in a structured line.
Eliot and Woolf, in Modernism's sphere,
    Fragmented truths, a dissonance clear,
In "The Waste Land," a shattered verse,
    Disillusionment's cry, a narrative terse.
Frost's simple lines, a rural scene,
Life's subtle truths in the everyday sheen,
Modernist echoes in each word displayed,
A longing for meaning, a depth conveyed.
    Postmodernism, a rebellion's cheer,
From Modernism's grip, it sought to veer,
Deconstruction, a key in its hand,
    Challenging structures, a bold stand.
Vonnegut and Pynchon, in playful spree,
    Mocking reality, absurdity set free,
    A Slaughterhouse tale, a war's grim jest,
A narrative maze, a postmodern quest.
    Morrison's Beloved, haunting and stark,
Memory's maze in a narrative arc,
    Postmodern echoes, identities veiled,
    Truths entangled, realities assailed.
Unemployed philosopher, a concept in flight,
Between Modernism's logic and Postmodernism's plight,
In a shifting world where ideas collide,
The philosopher muses, the currents he rides.
One seeks truth in a structured hand,
The other, a rebel, in a fragmented stand,
In this clash of thoughts, they intertwine,
In the Unemployed Philosopher's uncertain line.

Many intelligent comments below. Some more than others. My advice in mentally separating modernism from post modernism is to analyze Lyotard's descriptions of both in his book, The Postmodern Condition, which you can most quickly access from Wikipedia. For the record, that book was the first to use the word "postmodern" out of the context of art criticism, and it was written in '79. Prob more recent than some would assume. The next philosophical landmark for postmodernism came as recently as '91 in the form of "Postmodernism, or, the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism" by Frederic Jameson. My own summary: cultural turn toward general skepticism of centralized or authoritative truths that enabled the tragedy that was the twentieth century. Although some people still believe these things so we still have race supremacy, nationalism, and class based guilt

This was so fascinating, @C. A. Dubois! I really enjoyed this lecture - you're fantastic at it, and every engaging and interesting. Keep it up, girl! I loved your analogy of the match, and the flickering flame of the modernist period. I recently read T.S. Eliot's "Selected Poems" which had the poem "Waste Lands" and I think that is very true. I'm still not 100% sure I understand the post-modernist theory, but somehow I have the feeling that is the point, that everything is relative and abstract, and there can be no universal truth, etc.
Ooh, Victorian Literature would be a topic I'd be really interested in, as well as the Enlightenment and Medieval literature. Also, I think it would be interesting to hear more about how the novel came to be, and structuralism vs. and post structuralism - wow, so many exciting possibilities and topics! I am excited!

Watched the first few minutes and there seems to be a confusion between modernity and modernism. Modernism was either completely opposed to modernity or at the very least radically critiquing modernity. Also Woolf was deeply influenced by Joyce, and her quoted vulgar comments reflect anxiety of influence: Mrs Dalloway comes out of Ulysses.

Perhaps you mentioned this briefly (I’m a bit sick and having trouble concentrating) but after listening to you I went and read GK Chesterton’s “Heretics” and the picture he offers of the intellectual world of the early twentieth century is fairly postmodernist according to what you’ve said here. As he puts it, you almost expect to hear from every man you meet, “Well I may not be right but this is my opinion.” In the book he criticizes many intellectual figures and movements both apparently modernist and postmodernist. Particularly Bernard Shaw who he depicts as a modernist posing as a postmodernist (The Golden Rule is that there is no golden rule of course is self contradictory and has nothing to do with how Bernard Shaw actually thinks, despite his espousing it). It seems to me that postmodernism was part of modernism from the beginning. That is there was always a struggle between individualist and universalist views.
Anyway you might read Chesterton, he’s the great neglected mind of the twentieth century and both witty and insightful and advocates what he calls orthodox Christianity as the only correct answer because to his mind it allows the world to be real and offers an adventure to every soul. To him the best point of view should be something that has everything in it and finds adventure in daily life. His books “The Man Who was Thursday,” “The Napoleon of Nottinghill,” and “The Ball and the Cross” are both hilarious and brilliant. His satire of the Tolstoy pacifists in a the Ball and the Cross is particularly poignant as well as his satire of Nietzsche in the person of the bloodthirsty yet cowardly professor.

I think the best way forward, is the way in which most end up being happy. If you constantly look for that which is wrong, all you will see is a world that is wrong. But if you look at what seems to make people happy and focus on flourishing this, then you will have a better world. :)

Couldn't one contend the match is the REALITY and the problem being all the changing, flickering identities which look at it are the problem.
Admittedly, this is the Wittgenstein 'language-game' problem, at it's core, which Lyotard picks up and others treat over time as well.

modernism like pre modernism still has values and axiomatic principles and rules that define art while still being able to explore new frontiers of the unknown to build on and expand on an established and rich foundation on what defines art. postmodernism is built on the philosophy of french interlectuals that there is no valid axiomatic principles only infinate interpretations thus they kicked out the rich foundation completely in order to allow "boundless creativity" in exploring relative interpretation. the problem with that is yes there are infinite interpretations but only a small number of interpretations that work, this is why you go to a doctor of modern medicine over a voodoo Doctor because the axiom of medicine is to preserve and improve health and one achieves the objective more then the other, the problem with boundless creativity is it requires 0 creativity because creativity is bound by a set of rules or boundaries to think and move your way through in new and profound ways, its like playing chess without rules or an objective, if I'm playing a grand master within the boundaries of chess I need insane levels of creativity to win within the rules, if I play without rules or objectives creativity is no longer defined. This is why art galleries are mostly full of undefined rubish that most people outside of a niche market of "people educated in the arts" look at it apathy and confusion as apposed to the jaw dropping awe and admiration one use to get looking at dali.

I'm not a postmodernist but they were right to be skeptical about universal truths. I think the problem is that we confused "universal" with being "objective" when the two are not the same.

  • @Sizifus

So, what I understood is that:
modernists believed that through their own search of meta hierarchy, they can reach the meta truth, or the next best thing, where postmodernists not only rejected that, but thought that humans are heroes of their own narratives but also the puppets to their surroundings. Seems to me that postmodernists were trying to "free" men from the shackles of hierarchies but also did that in a way that destroyed human agency (with the exception of bureaucratic, capitalistic engines). So, what sense does that even make? Humans who have no agency are shaped by the systems that they've built?

If I don't discover/research postmodernism that means I am following someone else narrative - imposing of modernism using postmodernism technique?

    • @snowburnd
      @snowburnd 5 лет назад +9

What post modernism does is it takes essentism and, through observations performed during modernism realised that there is a nature versus nurture continuum in our lives that goes beyond what our parents teach us. An essentialist might say that girls wear skirts because that is what girls are inclined to do and that pink is a girls' color because girls are drawn to it. These statements are statements of universal truths which post modernism eschews. A superficial yet earnest but of research into these concepts would demonstrate that pink used to be the color of baby boys until color photography and that throughout history it hasn't been only girls wearing skirts.
Society has a deep indoctrinal influence on our thoughts, our tastes, our feelings. That is the reality that post modernism acknowledges by saying that we exist in the context of our world.
Deconstruction is taking the metanarrative you exist in and taking it apart to see it's effect on you and society.
It's not that there is no agency, it's that agency is always influenced, even from before birth.

    • @stevethebarbarian99

I don't think girls wore pink because they liked it, more because they thought men liked it. Same thing with perfume. @@snowburnd

    • @kimmiewise1044
      @kimmiewise1044 2 года назад

@@snowburnd Agency is influenced but it’s not created through the world in of itself which is why I find a lot of postmodern positions to be very impractical when it comes to political discourse. Because the postmodernist will assume that whatever issues arise must be a form of social conditioning which can be unlearned and reprogrammed yet this completely unravels the existence of social based problems in the first place.
In example, if gender is just a social construction of how society views males and females, in your own example girls wearing pink skirts and boys blue pants, then if my daughter told me that she wanted to be a boy, instead of jumping to gender Dysphoria and socially transitioning her, It would be postmodern approach to keep her a girl but let her experience being a girl differently, like letting her wear more blue pants. But obviously this doesn’t work because Transgenderism isn’t merely not being comfortable with the expectations of your sex. It’s a psychological state where you are significantly distressed about your sex and want to live your life as the opposite sex, regardless of the social expectations of the opposite sex. If being a boy meant wearing skirts and playing with dolls a transgender female will want to be boy just as much as if being a boy meant wearing pants and playing with dump trucks. Because it’s not about the social expectations but the biological and psychological misalignment.
This is where I find postmodernism falling apart. Because if things are a social construct then you would expect, in controlled social settings, that you could manipulate these elements and in some cases you can, some thing are a social construct, such as clothes. But there are certain elements that you can’t manipulate through social means and the postmodernists can’t agree if or where that’s true. Such as the idea of gender. If gender is a social construct, it’s just as some of these radicals claim that there are millions of genders and you can simply identify as transgender on the spot with no need to transition or even get evaluated. If you say you are trans, you are, no matter how little you feel about gender at all. But that doesn’t match the reality that trans people need hormone therapy and surgeries. And that’s where a lot of things start the roll down hill from what I can see.
      That’s just what a I’ve noticed though.
