That was geniuinely heart-wrenching the first time, and still is even after a dozen playthroughs. For all the places they dropped the ball in that romance arc in 3, this was one of the places that they kind of got it right. Was a good (missed) opportunity for Shep to drop the three words back to her though.

Both Tali and Garrus’ final goodbyes to their respective Shepard are some of most emotionally gut-punching scenes and line deliveries I’ve experienced from any game or media in general. The others were fine, but they just don’t hold a candle to how emotional those two get when Shepard leaves them on the Normandy; all that tacked onto the fact that Tali and Garrus are the characters closest to Shepard out the entire crew.

It's highly likely Liara saw Shepard as THE love of her life, and I wouldn't be surprised that in a canon where she and Shepard were lovers, that she never takes another lover despite her astronomically long lifespan.

When Shepard said "It's hard enough fighting a war. But it's worse knowing no matter how hard you try... you can't save them all.", it reminded me of my uncle who said something very similar after he quit the police force when he wasn't able to negotiate with a criminal and three hostages died. Mass Effect has probably one of the best communities I've seen, from what I've seen. There's very little division, even in the battles for waifus. "I like Tali", "I like Liara". People don't bash each other's choices, they respect their tastes. Because no matter who you pick, you see enough of the characters to get their appeal for other people. They didn't lock quirks and charm behind romance routes, you got to know them no matter what your relationship was with them.
For example, I played a female Shepard who stuck with Liara for the whole trilogy and treated Garrus like an older brother figure. They were my A-Team. By the end of the game, the crew of the Normandy didn't feel like a cast of characters cobbled together to tick niche boxes and meet some inclusion quota. They felt like a team that had come together from a variety of circumstances, bonding over hardship, to become a family. And as the head of that family, I was heartbroken when anyone was lost. I never had a game do that to me. That is why Mass Effect will always be special to me.
It was a good ride that I have every intent to take again. Keelah Se'Lai.

Dave Jackson Witcher 1 is the worst of the three games, however I'd say its a classic with flaws and is fun if you're into the Witcher series. Witcher 2 has a good story and improves a lot on the first game in terms of visuals and game mechanics plus i found it enjoyable. It's true that you don't need those games to get into Witcher 3, however it helps. If you have time to spare and want to get into the Witcher universe (which is very in-depth and interesting) then i'd recommend getting the previous games. However if you'd rather just get straight into Witcher 3 and not spend time i the previous 2 games id just recommend finding a youtube video that explains everything up to Witcher 3 so atleast you know what is going on, as it can be a little overwhelming getting into the whole universe. There are many good videos out there explaining the events of the previous games and even events before the games.

This game is actually cruel, I mean... It touches you so emotionally... No game does it that way. This game literally plays with your emotions, with everything you've been through throughout this trilogy. I played the entire trilogy about 40 times an I still didn't know why ME3 was so special for me. Now, with the LE and all the dlcs, I realized why ME3 is and will be my favorite videogame of all time: it plays with you emotionally on all sides, in every possible way. I nearly cried even in the final battle with all the fleets, not only because it is one of the best scenes that could have been made in a video game, also because of that feeling of anger, despair and revenge, the feeling of "it ends here, at all cost"... hard to explain. If I almost cried in that scene, imagine for the rest of the game.

And here, Shepard isn't just sacrificing himself, he is sacrificing the future he could have had with anyone. But that is what life is. Everything has an ending and every hero has to die, including you - the player. This game kind of ends with a question, how are you going to live your life now that you know even the hero of the story has to die?

im not bothered about the sacrifice or that shepard dies... I was upset at the lack of care seemingy put into the ending and the plot holes and lack of information given regards each ending. I replayed recently and romanced thane and that helped improve the sacrifice SO much, but i think most fans dont mind that shepard died, they mind about the piss poor ending. Still love the games though.
I also agree it is a better ending if shepard has to die in the same way i dont like everyone surviving the suicide mission - im so glad i fucked up the first time around because i was nearly in tears losing four of my guys

For everyone that has to complain about the game, learn to respect the opinions of the others, cause you may find the endings trash , but is not like that for everyone...if there's something that ME can teach us, is to respect everyone, and think that we all have different stories and points of view.

Going from AC2 you literally start playing from the instant he is born into his manhood and straight into his elderly years over the course of 4 games and 1 short film. Although I'm not sure what made me cry worse, Ezio's death or Shepard's sacrifice. With Ezio, I cried like I watched my parents die in front of me. With Shepard, I cried because the ending was so powerful emotionally.

A man who sacrificed everything for the future of not only humanity future but for the galaxy future. Recently played and finished the ME Trilogy (Legendary Edition) for the first time. I'm usually not that into Sci Fi shooters but this game had such an amazing cast of characters. You know a game is special when you can't stop thinking about it after finishing it. And this soundtrack at the end broke me 😭. Lots of people didn't like the ending (I can understand why) but I kinda liked it. I chose the destroy ending and it felt pretty fitting all things concidered. I completely forgot that ME4 was in development too so after remember it when I beat the game I got so excited. I hope the destroy ending is canon so we can play as Sheperd again. Finished ME3 again. Its so heartbreaking when the game ends. Stories like Mass Effect are just too powerful and strong, and emotional. And this music fits the story and the feelings towards the game so incredibly well. Still its difficult to see it end, to see characters you've grown to love and care for die. Shepard's death was actually the least impactful for me. I went into ME3 with like 90% expectancy of him/her dying. It just seemed fitting to me for the character and considering the circumstances and what the scenario was. I guess in a way Shepard was a vessel for me to experience the universe, story and characters. I like to think I always did what I would have done in those scenarios so in the end if my death means stopping the Reapers and saving what's left for the galaxy, it's not a hard choice for me.

    • @Chris_Doffer
      @Chris_Doffer 10 лет назад +7

I too was expecting Shepard to die, it didn't exactly come as a shock. It did feel like they were leading Shepard to die a hero's death. I do agree with you, the commander was a vessel for the player to experience this story. Maybe that's why I took it so hard, because when Shepard dies your connection to this universe is cut and the story ends for you. I just wanted it to go on. It's like we've been fighting for years to defeat the reapers, to protect a universe we've grown to love, and then when the war is won you're forced to leave this world.
The story was simply too good in my honest opinion.

^Damn straight. Play the games in order though. Over the course of the three games you'll become so attached to the characters that the feels during the ME3 Extended Cut will hit you like a train. ME3 was the first video game ever to make me cry my eyes out. After spending hundreds of hours getting to know these characters and building myself as a hero, you start to see it as less of a game and more of an alternate life; those aren't just NPCs. They're friends. Family. People you care about. You also start to see Shepard as yourself, not just a digital avatar. You're not just making the final choice; you're actually sacrificing yourself to give the entirety of life in our galaxy a chance to continue.

You'd think it'd wear off after a while, y'know. That it'd get old and lose some of its impact, like every other game you play multiple times. But no. Somehow, Mass Effect is the great glitch in the code for me. I have played the Trilogy so, _so_ many times and I still feel it as if it's new on each new run I start. I cry every single time when Legion, Thane and Mordin die. When I find David hooked up to all these horrible machines, and when I find him again, happy and healthy, in Grissom Academy. When Tali sees her first sunrise on Rannoch. When Miranda finally gets to hug her sister. When Anderson says he's proud of me and Garrus tells me he'll be waiting for me at the bar. Tears, always. Every. damn. time.

  • @Leowulfs

Jesus Christ. It's hard to believe this is almost ten years old and Mass Effect as a franchise is basically 15 years old at this point. I think as a kid I didn't grasp how significant this franchise was. Now that I've seen sci-fi and fantasy works in both games and television, it's really hard for any piece of fiction to hit the peak that Mass Effect did. The music, the characters, the choices, the settings, the environments, the designs - this game is so perfect, the world building is perfect. I think it's easy to get caught up in outrage culture and as gamers, I think a lot of the younger audience that was raging about the ending have grown up.
This was always a very deep, dark, serious game and I think a fairytale ending was never an option but at the time, this wasn't something people really associated with games I think. The general consensus is "Good guy save world, world happy, end happy." What an amazing franchise honestly, I'm so excited to replay it.

Honestly, the older I get the more I appreciate the ending. When I played it I wasnt happy about it, even though the epilogue helped a bit. But as time passes by I find myself growing more and more impressed by all the ending. They are all interesting choices even if none of them are perfect. Thats how it usually is. The only thing you get in this world is choice. Usually they are not good ones, but at least you have that freedom.

    • @HanithSVK
      @HanithSVK 3 года назад

@@tzimiable Very nicely summarized. Each of the endings(except giving up) are choices, your choices. Three game slowly brought you to this point. Each of the choice will change galaxy forever. If nothing else i like that they give you choice based on your "mind". Want peace? There is a way, but you have to bring the greatest sacrifice. Want control? Do it, but you, as an individual, will be lost forever. Wanna destroy them? Sure, do it and kill every single synthetic(and it even more hideous if you gave them free will first... You give them sentience just so you can use them and then you will kill them all), and god knows how many organics, because without Mass relays they will be stranded in that specific part of galaxy, not to mention BILLIONS of years of combined knowledge, from civilizations they harvested.
In the end, not one of the choice is technically good. They are kinda equally bad, but that's what makes this game unique.

It has been 3 years. 3 years since the great war for peace. She sits on her balcony, admiring the night sky. She takes a sip of her wine, and reads the reports she has received from the office. Reports from all over the galaxy say that the enemy has been indeed destroyed during the war, and their return is unlikely.
She sighs, reading the report, because she knows in her heart, their return will surely come. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday. she puts down the tablet of reports, and looks back to the night sky. She feels herself tearing up, but stops herself. She smiles.
"I miss you...." She whispers into the sky. "...Shepard."
Her tablet lights up. She picks it up to see a message. *"Commander Tali'zorah vas Normandy, General Hackett has requested an Extranet meeting with you."*
She smiles, and takes another sip of wine, and goes inside to answer the call.

You know what the refusal ending should have been? Starchild presents his "choices", you tell him to fuck off, and when he leaves, you find a way to disable his control (somehow, shooting a hard drive or something), at which point harbinger, who I guess we can assume is the starchild considering the backstory, attacks the crucible, similar to what happened in Mass Effect 1's ending. Shepard is evacuated by the Normandy, at which point you are patched into the communications network. You then have to fight harbinger by commanding the ships in the united fleet (during the fight the reapers are dormant, having a minor BSOD with starchild gone). Harbinger explodes gloriously, everyone celebrates. The reapers gain control of themselves, and realize what they are doing is morally wrong or something, and leave. Happy ending, the husks stand down, everyone stands down, the Geth and EDI are still alive, no bullshit synthesis, everyone has free will, shepard lives.

So this is how it works:
It takes 600 years to get to the Andromeda Galaxy from the Milky Way Galaxy using mass effect technology. The cast of ME: A left for the Andromeda Galaxy shortly after the events of Mass Effect 1, traveled in cryo-sleep for 600 years and woke up in the Andromeda Galaxy.
Therefore, they'll still have the ME1 tech since that's the era their technology is from, but the game takes place about 600ish years after the end of ME3. The characters probably have a knowledge of Sovereign, and they might talk a bit about Commander Shepard, but since save-loading isn't a thing for ME: A, they won't discuss anything that isn't 100% canon (so no reference to whether the Council lived or died, no reference to whether Shepard was male or female or what his/her background was, etc.). And they almost certainly won't talk about relative nobodies like Garrus, Tali, Ashley, Kaidan, Wrex or Liara, or anyone else in the cast. And they certainly won't be affected by anything anyone did in ME2 or ME 3 (Collector base status, ME3 ending, etc.) because those things hadn't happened yet when they left and they wouldn't affect anything outside the Milky Way.
On a side note, I wonder if they'll have thermal clips or whether they'll have ME1 overheating technology.

Stealth Clown I wouldn't really call it "Paragon" All the endings are pretty neutral because no matter what you choose, you are still losing something truly important. You either sacrifice this generation of synthetic life with Destroy, your own humanity with control or the individuality of each race and the freedom of thought with Synthesis. In the end it wasn't about Paragon or Renegade. There wasn't a right or wrong choice. It all came down to what you as the player felt was worth sacrificing to gain victory. That's what made the extended cut ending so memorable for me. In the end I chose Destroy because I wanted a galaxy where everyone was free to choose their own path and achieve peace on their own terms and Destroy was the only one that really allowed them to do that.

    • @MediumChungus223

DevilHunter1994 By paragon I was referencing that a paragon Shepard always helped everybody with what they wanted, all the a way back to ME1. Also, your paragon/renegade score does slightly impact the consequences of the crucible through extended cut. Paragon and renegade give different dialogue in red and blue endings based on which was higher with shepard at the time.

Jacob Knight straywolf77's statement is more apt than you think.
'Shepard' refers to 'Christ', the Shepard of the Flock. Also the Savior aspect, the fighting to unify basically everyone, the Reapers (Hordes of demons coming to extinguish life), Legion's name is a reference as well, so on and so forth.
It's worth noting that Shepard is *not* Christ, but that there are similarities aside from the name, as well as similarities between Mass Effect and Christian Lore.
There's a fair amount of stuff within the Mass Effect series that directly or indirectly (intentionally or otherwise, as authors have been known to do this without realizing) relates or correlates to something in the Bible.
I made the parallel some time ago. It didn't ruin my perception of the story at all, just a 'huh, that's interesting' moment that came and went.
