  • last time I made this chilli beef bake recipe was decades ago lol and its still as awesome as it ever was. hearty and filling serves 8. recipe written below.
    1 and 1/2 cups uncooked short grain rice
    1 egg
    cook rice drain well do not rinse
    allow to cool down to warm
    add egg and mix through well
    12 cup shallow baking dish greased
    put rice in pat down then flatten with back of spoon
    loosely cover and set aside
    filling
    1 table spoon oil
    1 kg beef mince meat
    2 med onions chopped
    2 cloves garlic crushed or 2 heaped tea spoons jar
    2 tea spoons ground cumin seeds
    2 tea spoons ground coriander seeds
    1 tea spoon garam masala
    up to 2 tea spoons chilli flakes
    2 x 400 to 425g cans chopped tomatoes
    1 cup water or chicken stock
    1 egg
    heat oil in pan if needed on med heat
    add mince brown well then remove
    add onions to pan with
    garlic spices and chilli cook stirring til onion cooked
    then add
    cooked mince, cans tomatoes and water or stock
    mix through well leave lid off simmer til very thick stirring every 5 mins or so
    turn heat off and cool in pan for 10 mins
    then add egg and mix in well
    spoon onto rice and smooth over with back of spoon
    cover glad wrap set aside
    pre heat oven 180 degrees C
    topping
    125g butter
    1/2 cup plain flour
    4 cups milk
    2 eggs whisked
    1/4 cup chopped coriander or parsley
    put 125g butter into large saucepan
    melt
    then add
    1/2 cup plain flour
    stir in well
    wait for it to start bubbling
    set timer 1 minute stir whole time then remove from stove
    add
    4 cups milk slowly
    put back on stove bring up to boil stirring the whole time once thick and coats back of spoon remove from heat
    cool for 5 mins
    whisk 2 eggs then add to milk mixture and stir in well
    add
    1/4 cup fresh chopped coriander or parsley stir in well
    set dish on a tray
    spoon over meat
    bake in middle of the oven for one hour til golden and top is set
    leave to cool for 10 mins then serve
    serves 8
    awesome to reheat the next day by nuking or in oven covered in alfoil
    i have not frozen it before so dont know how it will go i rekon it would be ok.
