Just recently found your channel and I'm loving every moment. You're clearly very informed, intelligent, and creative. Love this, sharing with friends.
ive watched many of your videos and they are all great, you have a nice easy way of explaining and showing your audience exactly what you want them to see and hear. I can tell you work hard, good job man
am in the process of acquiring a camera and am glad i stumbled upon your videos. Set thinking a little deeper before i purchase. Thanks for your time and information.
You are awesome man. Concise and clear like an engineer. I am hooked to your videos. Just started trying my hand of filming short videos and learning voraciously about lighting, sound, filming. I must say your videos are helping out a lot and saving some big bucks which would have spent on expensive camera instead. Keep up the great work and thank you for teaching what matters.
***** I use the Adobe suite for all of my video projects. I think it's becoming a standard here in Georgia, although they suffer from their fair share of bugs. There are free/cheaper alternatives, but keep in mind you're learning a skill that involves collaboration when put into large scale. If you plan to collaborate later down the road, go with Adobe (or perhaps Final Cut). If you plan to freelance and be the sole editor, you can look into open source software (which, sadly, I don't know too much about).
apart from the fact that your videos are absolutely professional and perfetcly done, i like a lot how you talk, your voice tone and language reminds me of poetry
This is great stuff! I film exclusively on my phone, and people ask me what I film with all the time. It's all about setting up the shots and knowing what the limitations are ad how to get around them.
good tips and lessons, I will try to use my phone to record my travel video first before spending some money for an expensive digital camera.thank you !!
I have the g4 it is treat but get the lg v10 it has the manual functions on the camcorder not cjust camera! it is like a film camera for a fraction of the price!
While there are so many cool new tech and gadgets out there, your videos do show that the most important thing in a film is its story, and I think our next generation of filmmakers should learn from you!I just realized that once a film is very good and catches your heart, you don't even consider what lens or body it was shot on.Thanks for this different positive message to us filmmakers!
Can't get enough of your vids, love them! I want to buy a camera soon for shooting videos. I know know that I will probably spend a lot less in the camera and a lot more in lightning and audio equipment. I'm looking forward to see your next episode, keep up the good work :D
Love the new formats each week! Very interesting to see just how surprisingly fantastic you got the images to look - your videos keep on getting better and better :)
I really love your RUclips videos cause you teach us to use anything you have around you and make it useful so we don't spend more money to make a great video.
heeyy simon cade, guess what, i found the script like 6 months ago but now i m gearing up whatever i get hands on to make a short movie, always an inspiration bro
I am Yash from India..Really loving your videos +DSLR GUIDE..I'm a Film Enthusiast with no Hands on experience in Film making..But your tutorials may finally propel me to start shooting short films. Carry on the Gr8 work!👍
I really liked this video, cause many times i think, i would make so good films with a good camera. The real art is, to shoot a very good film on a cheap camera with a low image quality.
okay, i feel off at 2:45 i don't know what it is but the audio doesn't feel as though its coming from your mouth but, if i look closely, its all timed up with the movements of your mouth but it feels unnatural and out of sync for some reason and the annoying thing is i can't quite pin out what i mean exactly
another useful video and in keeping with my own thoughts - about audio and that mixer mic, whether that's a Tascam or a Zoom they have excellent built in mics, so is it really necessary to connect the Rode (always)? In other words - do you ever use the native built in mics for the Zoom H1 & 5? (as you know, i have the H1) .. thanks
Really nice work here. The bit on color grading made me wonder how much more could be accomplished _live_ using XSplit Broadcaster's ability to tweak webcam colors... and _so_ much more if they were to add the ability to apply some common, or even custom, filters to video sources.
Mike Downes the benefits are that a microphone has a shot-gun which isolates the sound a little better than the built in ones, which are better for recording the ambience of a space. Also I can get the microphone up on a boom so it's out of the shot, and yet still have control of the record button / audio meters on the Zoom H5, which is a big deal.
Awesome! Really inspiring and creative. I totaly agree with you. I would say, that better camera can be helpful, when you shoot some documentary films, but still- gear isn't the most important thing. I really enjoy new style of episodes. Thanks a lot and keep it up : )
About half of my videos are shot on an iPhone 6 on the app filmic pro. The other half of my videos are shot on a Sony a37. I think my iPhone camera is great cause it's cheaper than my a37, has image stabilization in camera, and good quality video for a mobile phone! Great video as always, keep up the good work.
Amazing... I know lighting is an important part in setting up a scene but never would have guessed it would have made THAT much of a difference. That's just insane....
I shot with my smartphone (note4) for a film and what I did to get a shallow depth of field was to take the clip into after effects... Duplicate the clip and use the mask tool on the top clip trace the object or subject i want to be focus. After I create the mask I track the mask...but make sure your object or subject makes minimal movements before you bring it to post....once its tracked...i put a blur effect on the second clip below feather it and you have an awesome depth of field
actually there are bunch of stuff that you can make yourself like lighting: you can just tape a flashlight to a broomstick and defuse it with a white t-shirt and you can put another shirt over a piece of cardboard and use it as a bounce. you can use magnifying glasses, clear plastic bags, bedsheets, hairdryers and i'm sure you can somehow get all things i mentioned. no need to buy gear, you can just make it and get a better look with it
We do it the other way around. We have an A7s because we film very often in dark conditions (Horror) and had been sick of the ISO noise. But we do just use an cheap audio recorder (Zoom H2n), a Rode Video Mic and thats it. Instead of your lightning gear for approx. 1000 USD we just use one or two flashlights. Instead of a boom mic we use a cheap selfie stick, we have no reflectors and so on.
Aha xD I bought an LG G4 specifically for this reason, as I think it's one of the best phone cameras. Now 6 months later I'm seeing this video as even more inspiration xD Great video, Simon!
00:36 here you absolutely say how it is. There are so many several things you need to focus on. Looking only at the camera won't make you better! Nice video! :)
Hey Simon good luck with your exam GCSE or A level. I'm so jealous of you having so much time doing film relevant stuff, while I still struggling to get a B grade in my next performance studies exam. :(
Dslr guide episodes are getting more and more creative,i started watching from when you had 2k subscribers.A big fan of your channel Simon. How did you manage to get a flat image on the lg g4 for color correction?
thanks!what a journey it's been, right? the flat image wasn't flat - just happened to be over exposed a lot of the time, so I added more contrast. was just using the normal camera, as it comes
Good work. I think it's important to first have good ideas and learn about everything before buying expensive hardware. Now if you find you know everything and the only issue is you can't get a blurry enough background, then buy a fast lens. If you HAVE to shoot in very low lighting conditions at high ISO, then you have to get the A7s as most DSLRs will be too noisy or get blurry after noise removal...But you can always plan ahead, add more lighting and not need that.
Great analogy in the end of the video, I've never thought that way. Just bought an samsung NX3000 to start pratice the fundamentals of photography, and this video gave me a clear perspective about what to expect from the equipment and from the guy who deal with it. hahaha. Great video.
Great points and awesome video, and holy crap you've almost gotten 40K subscribers! I started watching your videos like 6 months ago and then you had 14K lol
Awesome. You're videos keep getting better and better. I actually shot some bits of my new short film using the iPhone 6. I used a cheap but awesome "RetiCAM" adapter, and was able to mount it to all my usual gear. And with the MoviePro app I was able to control the settings like any other camera. You should definitely check out the RetiCAM if you don't have it already.
Haha, yeah I feel you. I was really deliberate when doing research for a SmartPhone mount. Everything had horrible reviews and was plastic and flimsy. Then I found the RetiCAM, it's built like a tank. I actually love shooting on my iPhone now. We did a section of my new short (on my channel) that was all shot with it on the iPhone 6.
Awesome and very truthful video.. This is the best film school channel on youtube. You take the potential want to be film maker right to the point without any side tracking.. I totally agree with you and love the example you gave "IF YOU PURCHASE THE SAME RUNNING SHOES AS A OLYMPIC STANDARD TRACK ATHELETE, WHAT DIFFERENCE WOULD IT MAKE TO YOU RUNNNG AS FAST AS THEM?" I love that one because it relates with me. When I was age 13, I started training at a running club and by the age of 20 I was running at 10.19 for 100metres, I chose boxing in the end which I had started from the age of 11... At the age of 21 I decided to take the boxing route and peruse that. I had purchased a pair of boxing gloves in 1982 which cost £70 at the time which was a lot of money and some novice who just started at age 25 bought the same pair as me... He then asked me for a sparring session and I took him to school LOL. The gloves made no difference but My Knowledge and experience did... Awesome video thanks for sharing.. I still use the GH2 and am not moving on until I can justify it.... I have lots to learn Tony
TONYLOUISVISION & VIDEOGRAPHY PLUS thanks for your encouragement Tony, it really means alot. You couldn't be more right - nothing beats experience and knowledge :) thanks for sharing your story man! I'm also going to stick with my T3i - although it's really tempting to upgrade
How would you suggest starting off a documentary also how would you go about filming the behind the scenes for a film i.e. interviews, getting everything etc. Thanks
Rhys Warren | Cinematography I did a relatively simple documentary on my channel (it would be cool if you could check it out), but I found the best way to open it is with some solid establishing shots of your location/topic. So, say you were doing a documentary about litter, you could have a long opening shot of a street or area with litter on it. Also, make sure you have a good narrator, and just ask about for interviews. Hope this helped!
The shoes/Olympic runner analogy = gold.
Just recently found your channel and I'm loving every moment. You're clearly very informed, intelligent, and creative. Love this, sharing with friends.
***** thank you, I'm really glad you like the channel!
Really loved the Olympic runner analogy. In fact, that one analogy helped me decide to hold off on a purchase for a good while. Thanks again Simon!
Awesome video! LG sent me a G4, too, and I have a cinema mount for it w/ a wide angle and macro lens. Super simple 4K recording rig!
ive watched many of your videos and they are all great, you have a nice easy way of explaining and showing your audience exactly what you want them to see and hear. I can tell you work hard, good job man
+Monco Field cheers :)

your channel is just AWESOME!
thanks for the positivity Lara!
you're welcome!! I'm learning a lot with your content!!! Keep it up!
j man thats a big ask

I'm so glad to hear all of this. Thanks for reminding me of the most important reason for making these videos :)
+VP contemplater Use a stabilizer.
There are many types of stabilizer. Shoulder rig is one of it. Usually DSLR use shoulder rig. For phone usually hand held stabilizer.
Look at something like the Ikan FLY-X3.
the best tutorials I've ever seen, not only footage wise. congrats!
The running shoe analogy is perfect.
+Matt James thanks Matt!
+Matt James yes i was about to say the same thing!!! no need to double comment!

Hi Simon, could you do a tutorial sometime in the future on how to set up lighting. Great video by the way. Thanks.
I love your content. I've only watched one video so far, but you got my sub.

Your channel came up on my home page and I'm glad I clicked it. It's criminal that you only have 150k. Subbed.
Bruh i can't even begin to explain how great it is to watch someone that knows what they're talking about. How are you so talented???
Fantastic video, incredible what you managed to do with this camera, and i completely agree with the message, keep doing what you're doing simon.
***** thanks Joe, glad you like it!
I wish LG would send me a g4
+The Hardware Cove not trying to be mean in anyway but if you do something with your life with passion... then people will send you stuff

+Media Ninja And I wish RED but maybe send me a weapon dragon....still waiting for it.... :P

And what you capture in your screen

+Charly Labs no problem :)
as a begging youtuber, I find your videos extremely helpful
love your focus on overseen but important aspects of film making other than just camera gear talk. lighting is really so important!
***** I'm glad you're interested it in the non-tech stuff!
Great stuff, my friend! I've learned a ton from your channel over the past few days. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Your last frase about the running shoes methaphore was the cherry on the cake!
this is so true...my team and I did an experimental video using 90% footage from iPhone...and we won the special jury award in a competition... :)
I really love your RUclips videos cause you teach us to use anything you have around you and make it useful so we don't spend more money to make a great video.
Man you put in a lot of work into these videos. :)
This was soo good. The last bit about the running shoes was just perfect.

Loving the new style.
Another great video Simon! Your videos are always well thought out and really put what filmaking is about into perspective. Keep it up!
I love how realistic and straight-forward your videos are. Thank you very much for brightening up my day.
I like the fact that it's more important of what's in front of the camera, then what camera is in use...cool and true.

I really liked this video, cause many times i think, i would make so good films with a good camera. The real art is, to shoot a very good film on a cheap camera with a low image quality.
Wow, such talent in such young age. i really like the intro now simon :)
thanks for the information, great video man
Sweet!!! The lighting and postproduction make a really good difference
Your best video so far! 💪💪💪
Great film. Like the change of location this week, keeping it short, packing in lots and great use of simple audio.

Great video man! Subscribed!
Brilliant! And the running shoes analogy at the end is spot on!
I like the running shoe analogy at the end, it really drives the point home.

Ricardo Sanchez that must have taken a long time ;)
Anything good always does....but I did get a real good result from it
Great episode as always! Really nice of LG as well for reaching out to you and send you their G4 :D
thanks Julian! it's just cheap advertising for them, but it's pretty cool :)
You are awesome bro, love every single one of your videos
Thanks for getting to the point and getting me motivated!
I was trying to find some videos on how to make youtube videos, but all I have seen involved really expensive equipment, this is so encouraging!

Well done. Most do not realize it is the story, the lighting and the audio, not the camera.
We do it the other way around. We have an A7s because we film very often in dark conditions (Horror) and had been sick of the ISO noise. The result is amazing!!
This guy explains and knows his stuff really well! You my good friend should go far in life with this!
Josh Barritt why thank you Josh!
Aha xD
I bought an LG G4 specifically for this reason, as I think it's one of the best phone cameras. Now 6 months later I'm seeing this video as even more inspiration xD
Great video, Simon!
You may have messed up on the audio syncing...
+ChrisTheSheriff it's on purpose actually
00:36 here you absolutely say how it is. There are so many several things you need to focus on. Looking only at the camera won't make you better!
Nice video! :)
good comparision at the end!
Simon, I love your approach to film making. I will be sharing your videos regularly with my students.
Steve Guiles thanks Steve!
first vid I've watched of your lessons. I like you dude. nice stuff, simple and to the point.
This video was great! One of my new favorites of dslr Guides videos
Splat gaming thanks!
I love that last quote "if you buy the best athlete shoes you still won't beat the fastest runner." 🙏🏽🔥
Hey Simon good luck with your exam GCSE or A level. I'm so jealous of you having so much time doing film relevant stuff, while I still struggling to get a B grade in my next performance studies exam. :(
Thank you for your help, I will try my best on my future videos to use these techniques!
Loved the analogy with the Olympic Runner
Dslr guide episodes are getting more and more creative,i started watching from when you had 2k subscribers.A big fan of your channel Simon. How did you manage to get a flat image on the lg g4 for color correction?
thanks!what a journey it's been, right? the flat image wasn't flat - just happened to be over exposed a lot of the time, so I added more contrast. was just using the normal camera, as it comes
well yes it has been a great journey :),that's great, adding more contrast does help in color correction
he's gonna be big some day!!!
Great tips. Doing some work before you turn on you camera does make all the difference.
Awesome episode, might filming like that out
Good work. I think it's important to first have good ideas and learn about everything before buying expensive hardware. Now if you find you know everything and the only issue is you can't get a blurry enough background, then buy a fast lens. Rhamsés Soares awesome - so glad you're not putting too much emphasis on the gear :)
Excellent video young man! Thank you for the reminder to keep it simple and look to the basics.
+jffrats no problem :)
Runner analogy is very good!
what if I wanted to use an old minolta digital camera to give it that homemade look you'd see when youtube was still new
Awesome! We did a video along the same veins for our first episode. Love your stuff.
Great points and awesome video, and holy crap you've almost gotten 40K subscribers! I started watching your videos like 6 months ago and then you had 14K lol
Love the color grade you added on the G4 footage
***** why thnakyou!
Awesome. You're videos keep getting better and better. I actually shot some bits of my new short film using the iPhone 6.
