Crazy that video games have some really sweet music in them. I still remember the Atari and it's "idea" of music. Castlevania and Metroid have the best ambient background music from the 90s and revolutionized not only a genre but also the music in a video game.
Also the cover art of the era 1900-200 Is Crazy. Idk Who Is the author of the painting of alucard (don't Remember the name) but Also yoshitaka amano was very very at his best with the final fantasy's work. Also vampire Hunter :-)
Totally my friend, really good game my first play fue cuando tenía 17 años en un emulador de PC lo volví a jugar a los 22 años en ps4 y recientemente lo descargue denuevo para jugarlo a los 27
Perfection. The track starts with a jazzy opening. The synths and bass match the dank, water-filled caverns. The drums really have a 90s vibe but fit well. This is your solid video game level song right here. And then the piano comes in at 0:33. It goes from just a videogame level track to this classical jazzy lounge beat. It's like a band of skeletons is playing in a velvet-lined room in a caveroom behind Alucard. And it could really loop after this part. It's already so good. But then 1:07 happens. This new synth comes in, that climbs over the jazz with this foreboding, lonely melody. It maintains the dank cavern feeling, but adds a layer of melancholy on top. It's like a singer enters and starts singing with the jazzy band. You might be able to tell, but this part sounds like quite a few videogame songs that were made around the late 90s. The last two notes at 1:30 are so good. And again, this sad song would be fantastic already if it looped from here. But Michiru Yamane takes it one step further. At this point, the organ comes in. It's revealed that this jazzy track is still heavily gothic. The band of skeletons is still all a part of the grand and mysterious Dracula's Castle. This part is as if it's a classical dance in a ballroom. It builds so well on top of everything established so far. The organ matches the bass and drums perfectly, and is complimented by the synths from before. It takes it's time climbing, steady yet not stopping. And then at 1:41 we have the start of the crescendo. A choir comes in to sing alongside everything else in this song. Everything builds, the choir taking the gothic feeling and elevating it further to something angelic or holy, even supernatural, before it ends on a grand, complete note. This jazzy sunkern cavern song somehow reaches all the way up through the castle into the heavens, before descending back down. This track is why it's called Symphony of the Night, because that's what this is. This is one of the best songs in the series, not only because it sounds beautiful and catchy, but also because it captures everything castlevania should be. This IS the definitive song for the atmosphere Dracula's Castle has. Thank you for reading.
Which is ALSO why the slightly cut version of this track irks me so much. Fact is, Michiru Yamane missed that connecting bridge during subsequent reproductions of this masterpiece. When played in its entirety, as we're blessed to hear right now, this track truly becomes the spirit of Castlevania: its Symphony of the Night.
This is such a solid and well thought out examination of this piece, so much props to you. I have an appreciation for the tracks in this game, but I can't put it into words the same you do.
Wow, what a musical analysis! Spot on. You really explain the brilliance of Yamane's work in layman's terms. Why we feel what we feel when listening to a great musical piece.
Damn It would've been dope If I had this playing in my car the other day I was out driving in pitch black long interstate roads and there wasnt a car to be seen, symphony of the night soundtrack wouldve been dope
Most Castlevania games I dig the Vampire Killer, Bloody Tears, or Beginning versions most... but yeah, SOTN-wise this is tops. I'm playing SOTN on PS4, first time in years, and recently was fully mapping out the underground area... loving this song all the while.
Requiem of the gods says hi! The most gothic & castlevania-y track….i think its the best track…go listen to it rt now on youtube! it makes u feel like its time to do battle with the children of the night….
Yamane Michiru is literally a musical genius. Truly beyond her time. I am sure if she wasn't making video game music. She would have big as legendary composers. She is a legend to me though. Always will be. Literally would stop in the middle of the game and let the music loop.
it's crazy to think that there's currently more composers alive today than have existed as a total sum throughout history. many of them are incredibly talented and original, sadly many go unnoticed.
This game had an absolute MAGICAL ost. This song has that certain thing about it that makes you come back from time to time just to vibe out and reminisce about moments in your past.
I love the anachronism. Not concerned with whether or not the breakbeat mesh well with the setting, but rather prioritizing the atmosphere and the music as its own art.
The beat sounds like it's coming from a distance, resonating through a great space. Like maybe a cavern. Same thing the Blade Runner soundtracks employ.
Every other area of the castle has a bit of its own theme to it but this just feels like "more happenings underneath dracula's castle, carry on friend"
Usualmente escucho este soundtrack cada que camino por la madrugada, y no hay ya mucha gente alrededor. Me llena de calma y de serenidad, eso es lo que en lo personal me transmite. Gracias por tu ingenioso talento, Michiru Yamane.

1:23 is the SINGLE HARDEST drop in a video game BGM EVER. I remember when i played as a kid i literally just stopped playing the game briefly game to jam to it. And its STILL a banger.....
Also nice change of overall dynamics as you enter the catacombs and it's theme starts to kick in, so uneasy, so eerie, so disturbing, sends chills down your spine...that one is memorable as well, it's melancholy, it's notes of hopelessness and desperation...memorable, but for all those different reasons...
I didn't mean the transitional small area between underground caverns and further down below, i meant the one the is further down, the very boom of the map, with Granfaloon/Galamoth bosses in respective castle...

The gated drums were a great artistic choice for this track. Got introduced to this game back in senior year of high school by a former friend. Great game, great music.
This song always reminded me of the movie Labyrinth. It's so dark and yet, romantic. Michiru Yamane is up there as one of the all-time greats, along with Yuzo Koshiro. Appropriately, this game is among the greatest ever made.
