I started with styling my hair first, because many items in my wardrobe look quite vintage already for me (big high-waisted pants, bias cut skirts, shirts and blouses). Also I started collecting old kebaya (traditional clothing of SEA women) since two months ago. I'd say for now my personal style is a mix of 30's-50's with a touch of Indonesian traditional look.
Great video! I do enjoy looking at others' unique take on vintage fashion. It's nice that you pointed that out in this video. There's no vintage fashion community in my area (that I know), so you and people you mentioned in this video helped me a lot!

When I started wear vintage it was a little disaster, because I didn't know which style was mine. After a year and a half trying now I'm super confy with my 40's style, meanly wide pants, and I'm still building muy wardrobe, I rediscovered colours like brown, grey and green (befor that I always wear black). its' a journey!
Yes it's so nice to play with colours isn't it? Vintage and vintage repro has so much more range than modern fashion!
I love how you said you don't have to stick with one time period. There are things I love about the 30's, 40's and 50's. Whether it's the hair style or clothing, it's nice to know I don't have to find one decade and only dress like that! I'm very new to all this, and this was very helpful!
I would have to say what I often find most interesting about vintage fashion are the details. Sometimes, it’s the way a dress is cut, or the buttons used, or how many buttons used, the silhouette of the clothing and how they drape on a body….it’s downright magical.
I don’t know if I can pinpoint one thing that really denotes vintage style for me. When I started out with vintage I was just buying clothes that I liked from the thrift store. I think I was heavily inspired by the films I watched and books I read. I looked at old photographs of my family and emulated their fashion in some ways. I never really thought too much about it until a couple of years ago. I just wore whatever I liked and am glad that my mom supported my choices

Loads of people seem to advocate a completely authentic vintage look but that's not what I want. I like the style and silhouette of the 50s as it flatters my body (big boobs, tummy, big hips) as it makes my waist look smaller. I want to wear those clothes in a modern way that suits my style, not look like I'm from that time.

It's so lovely to have a real connection with the piece!
I live in an Art Deco city that has two festivals a year. Because I couldn't afford to buy the clothes and I'm an experienced knitter, I knit mine, including 1930s evening gowns. Knitting patterns are great for inspiration, even those that don't knit, as they tell you about fashionable colours and show hairstyles and what to wear with the knitted garment. I often wear what I make and I'm known for my clothes.
How would you start with that? I'm not a knitter at all and I would assume you need a sewing machine. We're currently in lockdown in Australia and I could use something to stop going stir crazy.

I wish I could get comfortable with wearing lipstick. Makeup and hair is definitely the biggest challenge for me. I immediately took to wearing dresses and skirts, but it's really the makeup and hairdo, that makes the look, imo.
Of course it doesn't help, that my hair is a chin length grown out pixie with lots of layers. I just can't get this mess on rollers or in pin curls, no matter how hard I try 😆. And yes, I watched all your tutorials (they're really good, btw), my hair just won't cooperate...but I think, it's due to it's length and cut.
And I just feel odd wearing a lot of makeup. Always have.
So I'm not really aiming for a vintage look, right now...just using it for inspiration, to dress more feminine and 'put together'.
Snoods, as in the hairnet things not the neck cowls might help you with the hair issue.

Oh, it's not even for overnight - I doubt, I could sleep like that anyway.
Just trying to do the pincurls themselves is such a challenge, when your hairs is heavily layered. The strands just fall apart and the ends stick out...it basically only works with fairly wet hair and lots of product. Plus, I have an insane amount of really thick hair...so my partitions have to be tiny, which is even more work.
If you’re trying to do the 40s look make up was very minimal for the everyday lady! Powder lashes and lippie were the main staple. So try that some women who could afford more make up used rouge and eyebrow pencil.
You can too! If you don’t like eyebrow pencil keep them groomed. Use night cream and a good moisturizer. Other than that it should take 10 minutes to wear the makeup. Lipstick 💄 is the only bold product that makes the look stand out!
Have you considered trying a peach or reddish brown and slowly amping up the shade of red from more neutral to full red?
For me vintage is all abot the full circle skirts and the well curled and styled hair, that's like true vintage to me.
I've never been scared of not being "correct" in this field, I just wear what I naturally is drawn to and think is beautiful.

Because of the shape of some 50's clothing, I'd like to incorporate more of it. Simply because it fits my body better than modern clothes do. My colour and design choices usually do not fit any "fashion"

I feel like the level of polish is really what reads as vintage for me. That can be done in different ways, doesn't necessarily have to be a full face of makeup, hair, girdle, tight clothing. Just a sense that there's a purpose and a simple togetherness that just carries itself. I think certain people in general feel "vintage" to me without dressing that way just by the care they take with their look.
I don't dress obviously vintage. I like my outfits to look like they are modern but have something from other periods. They have just a vintage scent. A lot of the times my silhouette is 100% vintage but my accessories, hair and makeup are more modern.

As a hairstylist and makeup artist, I feel like it’s all about the hair , jewelry, and makeup more so than the outfit. Everyone wears vintage at some point…. But no one is wearing victory rolls and vintage styled hair… because it’s hard to do. Whenever I wear vintage hair… I get so many comments.
Seems you and I see eye to eye on mixing eras. But you are the polished version of that. 🤣🤭
Vintage to me means using classic reference points in your clothing style, and working from there. We can't always get it right but then, it's all about the spirit! I'm not yet on my journey but for me: 1950s is the era.

I love the 70s style for summer and warmer times of the year and I usually wear a 50s poodle skirt at Christmas time with my husband's family. They just love now the youngest member of our family wants a pink poodle skirt what have I started 😅. I even have made 50s house dresses and wear them to lunch on Tuesdays. I go and have lunch with women who are in their 70s and they love it. Actually my MIL helps me do it right. I never thought I'd have this bond with her but I do ❤.

Definitely the creation of the iconic silhouettes dependent upon the decade - AND hats, gloves, bags and shoes ALL matching and being complimentary to the outfit. I feel like matching accessories like that IMMEDIATELY scream mid-20th century vintage to me!!!
Also kinda different one but is definitely fabric choices/quality and the use of seams and tailoring. I find vintage clothing/styles tend to be cut and fitted in certain ways that is not like modern clothes or fashions. Even the mod look of the 60s with the boxy A-line dresses tend to have more attention to tailoring details and fit than a lot of the clothing styles today.
I certainly believe it is one of the benefits of experimenting with mid-century and even historic clothing is being able to look for shapes and silhouettes that might be more flattering, comfortable, complimentary to ones figure - regardless of shape or height - and making the clothes work for you rather than you for the clothes.
I tried on a mini skirt in a high-street store today, thought I could make a cute 60s outfits and it was all wrong in the waist and hips. But I know of I look for a vintage A-line mini skirt or 70s kilt style (or full circle skirt but that’s a whole other thing) then it will fit close on my waist but have more room in the hip and bottom area and just flatter my body shape and I will still be comfortable.

I’m a watcher and don’t dress vintage, but I enjoy watching the videos. I watch you, Rachel Maksy and Laci Fay. I live in the desert of Phoenix, so that’s one reason, hot weather eliminates a lot of clothing, and dresses don’t look as well on my body type. But I love the artistry of it. I think in the winter I’d like to try some 40’s style pants looks. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thank you for all this wonderful information. I also started with basics like dresses, skirts and blouses. With time I added hats, bags and scarves. RUclips has videos and tutorials for a lot of vintage topics. I trend I also read about in the last 2-3 years and that I did without knowing is: starting with 50s circle skirts style and discover that the 40s had also wonderful styles and aiming more for this style although I still wear the 50s circle skirts style. P.S I also follow Sage Lilleyman, the glambassador and My vintage love here on RUclips.
