Because a lot of people are pointing it out. This video was made before the insane increase of used car prices. Some of these cars have creeped above the 15k mark. Some of the GXs are going for over 20k. These cars are still really good value for the money but just not that all cars have increased in price since I first uploaded this video.
WHAT ABOUT FORD AN DODGE HEAVY DUTY EX CAB SIX FOOT BED 4X4 ? I NO THE NEWER ONES ARE WAY TO BIG. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE OLDER ONES? THEYLL CRUSH EVERTHING YOU NAMED ON THIS VIDEO FOR OVER LANDING. FOR ONE THERE HEAVY DUTY AN THAT PRETTY MUCH MEAN YOUR GONNA HAVE TO DO A WHOLE LOT TO BREAK IT. YOULL PRETTY MUCH BE ABLE TO HAUL AN TOW WHAT YOU WANT. MOST TRUCKS AN SUV I SEE THAT ARE FOR OVER LANDING THERE PRETTY MUCK OVER LOADED. IF YOU SEE AN REALLY NICE OVER LAND VEHICLE IT PRETTY MUCH HAVE AN HEAVY DUTY DRIVE TRAIN. SO WHY NOT BUY AN ALL READY HEAVY DUTY VEHICLE? ITS WAY CHEAPER TO ADD LOCKERS AN BUY ALL THE OTHER LITTLE THINGS YOU NEED. NOW SUBURBAN ARE AWESOME THE HEAVY DUTY ONES ARE THE BEST. LETS NOT FOR GET THE FORD EXCURSION. WHY? BECAUSE ITS HEAVY DUTY. ALL THAT WELL THEYLL EAT UP A LOT OF GAS. IF YOU BUY AN UNDER POWERED VEHICLE IT WILL YOU JUST AS MUCH GAS AND BE STRUGGLING AT THAT.
I have an Xterra Pro-4x with a 2” OME lift and 33” general grabber x3’s. The thing just doesn’t get stuck, period. I do wish it had a little more bottom end grunt to it ,but it’s an amazing rig
Yeah I’ve got a little dream to turn a small truck like maybe a ranger into a pre runner. Maybe one day if this channel takes off and I can use it as a tax write off lol. Love rowdy little trucks.
Just bought a Frontier and man I’m obsessed with it. Absolutely terrific truck. Comfortable, capable and the new redesign looks so tough and beefy. Love tacomas, Rangers and definitely Colorados too! I’m with you bro!
This is a very good listing. I like that you weren't biased to a particular manufacturer or Import vs. domestic. These are almost exactly what I would recommend. Some might think i'm crazy, but I would honestly add in a Subaru Forester. Early 2000's model that is. They are so much more capable than people realize. It will never compete with a built larger vehicle for large obstacles, but with basic mods it is easily a top contender and extremely reliable vehicle. They are used in Australia very frequently, and I believe we can all agree that they have some intense terrain.
Yeah now that the used car market is going back to normal I want to do more lists like this. Forester might make its way onto one of the lists. I had a 2014 forester for a while and I could do a lot in it… just didn’t have that low range which is the main reason I went to the 4Runner.
I drive a 2005 Mitsubishi Montero Limited. I put on a 2-inch lift kit (Lovells springs and Bilstein shocks), and swapped out the 4.3 diffs for 4.9 diffs (rear Hybrid LSD) from a 2001 Montero XLS. Those minor enhancements along with its already great ActiveTrac 4wd system make it a beast off-road.
One of the forgotten offroaders? Isuzu Trooper and Rodeo/Amigo/P'Up. I had a 93 Trooper RS, and currently have a '02 Rodeo with only 74K miles. I paid $1800 for it, leaving me lots of cushion for upgrades. The primary issue with these Isuzu's are the automatic transmissions. But I only have the 5 speed manuals. If you are handy with a wrench then they are great budget builds/trucks. I've had XJs, Zjs, and AMC J10. I landed on Isuzus because they are abundant, cheaper than dirt, and the driving characteristics and interior remind me most of 3rd gen 4Runners.
There were so many people that told me I messed up not adding the trooper. I had every intention of making an “under 10k” and under 5k” but the used car market is so crazy right now something might break the threshold I set the next week.
I was going to say the same thing! I have had 2 Troopers, and they easily would get you there and back! I'm a scorpion biologist, so I really get into some crazy places! My 1994 RS was super rare, only 5000 built in a 3-year run! And I also had a '95 4dr LS. Excellent engines and off-road capability! I now have a 3rd gen 4runner that I love but not as much as the 2dr RS.
The first generation Ford Explorer is an excellent option for off road also. They're surprising off road even in stock form with 235 75 R 15 tires but adding 30x9.50R15's or 31x10.50R15's is a quick and instant upgrade for clearance.
I talked about the explorer once in another video and I got roasted for it. Everyone either loves or hates them. I’ve got nothing against them just didn’t want the drama on the channel because they are really hated by some people for some reason. I think they are totally fine though.
@@OXFOOT I've owned 3, still have 2 '93's one stock XLT and one with 9" s of lift on 35's with 4.56:1 axle ratios and lockers front and rear. I also now have 2 Bronco II's which are unstoppable little beasts off road. They all sorta took a black eye over rollovers which were 95% caused by driver error. The 2nd Generation Explorer with the IFS with the batch of bad Firestone tires also didn't help but I really only like the first generation with the TTB axles as it's a good mix of IFS and solid axle and soaks up the road well on and off road.
Nice to see the Sidekick get some attention. Hugely underrated off-road capabilities - short wheel base, relatively high clearance, narrow body, the wheels as close to the corners as possible for entry and departure angles, small 4 cylinder - but also very light. I had a (97?) Chevy Geo Tracker (built in parallel with Suzuki Sidekick). Underpowered for the highway, but it could go nearly anywhere. My daughter slid on ice and put into the ditch one very snowy day on her way to school. When I say “in” I don’t mean tires - the entire vehicle was sitting in the wide and deep drainage ditch. I got there about the same time as the state trooper who was getting ready to call a wrecker to pull it out. I told him I’d drive it out. He told me “no way.” I put it in 4W low and crawled up and out of the ditch with almost no spinning. He just shook his head. I always called it “the goat” - not “greatest of all time”, but because it would climb and go like a mountain goat without all the tire spinning and “momentum” attacks the bigger rigs use.
It’s honestly one of the best offroad vehicles made. It couldn’t be more perfect. I think they still make something similar in a ton of countries that aren’t the US. Like the Jimney or jimmy or something. The wheel base is perfect but yeah the engine with any larger tires just isn’t a great combination.
And the gearing of that low gear is really great. I’ve not always been a huge fan of the 4Lo gearing in my 4Runner. I wish it had an even lower gear than 4Lo 1st gear.
Throwing some love for the Nissan Pathfinder. It's a couple thousand cheaper than an Xterra. Has a 3rd row of seats but independent rear suspension which is the compromise. Still can be lifted easily, has a roof rack and a brake locking system like ATRAC. It shares the frame and front end with Xterra/Frontier. I live in Atlantic Canada where a good chunk of the vehicles on this list don't exist, because anything 15 years old is in the junkyard covered in rust, so when the choice was something 10 years old and $10k, Pathfinder was the only one to make the list.
I don’t disagree. I think even during this crazy price hike of most off-roaders there are a few that didn’t really go up too much and the pathfinder is one of them.

the 99 4runner had an elocker option as well, also had the multimode transcase which in the 4runner circles is considered to be better than later iterations. fyi.
Love my 2005 Gen 3 Montero. $5k and you can find one with low-ish mileage and great maintenance history. Reliable, capable, and timeless design. Have to drive one to really appreciate it. View, driving position, and interior space are unmatched. Put an Elocker on, a lift and some tires, and you'll keep up with trucks 3-4× the price. Not to mention you'll be the only Montero on the road. Also, parts are surprisingly not too hard to come by for how rare they are. Best pro: You can drive JDM and avoid the Toyota Tax. Gen 2's are even cooler IMO. But, they are even more rare, and they are getting older so if you find one it'll likely need some love, but what truck doesn't.
I love the way they look. I have a huge thing for 90s/00’s styling, very much a 90s JDM guy from off-roaders to fast cars. I think that the montero really hit that styling on the head. Both times. Honestly the last generation is what I think the original 5th Gen 4Runner 10-13’ was made to resemble. It’s just a solid all around looking vehicle.
@@OXFOOT No doubt! The 3rd Gen is a pretty truck, even stock. But I have a lift, AT's, a bull bar, roof rack, and I removed the running boards.. Really takes it to the next level and I still find myself looking back to admire it months into ownership. The 2nd gen is just pure 90's rugged utilitarian. Plus the interior, while not as spacious, is equally as cool, with all of its gauges and knobs. They are so rare because they stopped shipping them to the U.S. in 2006. Poor sales I guess. They were still pretty popular in Australia and other places until they discontinued them this year. I bought mine mostly because they're so damn cheap, but I've grown to love it no matter how much they cost. Honestly the only trucks I'd consider replacing it with would be an older GX470, or Land Cruiser, and they are 2-3× the price.
I had a 1995 Gen 2 Pajero, the JDM version of the Montero with the 6G74 v6 DOHC and god it was a monster. All leather interior, lots of room, center locking diff and man I got it for 3K while stationed out in Guam with about 72,000 miles and in damn near mint condition. Unfortunately, a super typhoon rolled through and it got a ton of rust from all of the salt water so it wasn't going to be coming to the states. My favorite vehicle I've ever driven.
I never filmed a video on it but my best friend had an 07' Xterra till he traded it in for a Taco and I loved working on it. The Xterra is in my opinion one of the best mod-friendly SUVs out there. I did a Backup camera and Lightbar with ease on the Xterra and it's built really really well. The thing has power too the V6 is quick, and you can get a solid one for like $6-$7k
Yeah I’ve seen some really nice builds out there on the Xterra. I’m always blown away at how cheap they are for what you are getting. You should see if you can film with someone’s, it’d be interesting. I thought about doing a walk around of my buddies but he has no interest in being on camera haha.
Also love the channel! I just subbed to you the other day and was surprised to see your comment on my video. I thought maybe I had commented on one of yours, forgot about it and you were responding. Ha.
@@OXFOOT Haha no I can see my subscribers list, you can too if they have it set to public on their profile in RUclips Studio, I always like seeing what other types of channels sub to me. I was very impressed with your content! :)
Oh that actually makes sense.I honestly don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to RUclips. I rarely use studio like I should. The fact that I have more than 5 subs is a miracle ha.
@@OXFOOT haha well God does bless us with those miracles sometimes. Studio is a great tool! It has helped me grow immensely this past year without having to pay or anything. It’s just shown me analytics and what’s hot so I go with the trends.
Yeah I’m not one of those Toyotas that discounts jeeps. My mom had one for many miles and I actually learned to drive on that TJ. Pretty solid vehicle.
I have one...an '04 TJ. It's my little mule and I love it but reliability can be an issue. I am a little surprised though that Oxfoot did not include the venerable Toyota Land Cruiser on his list. Talk about bulletproof! I still have The Jeep but the LC (100 series) is my daily driver now and has taken me on many adventures.
NISSAN FRONTIER, XTERRA, and TITAN. ALL are reliable overlooked rigs especially the Frontiers. Use a Titan as my tow rig now pushing 300k miles and a 2013 frontier as my overlander. Full long travel on the frontier and it's a beast. Lots of Frontier parts are exchangeable with the Titan's stronger parts because they share very similar frames so everything like suspension bolts right up.
Yeah I have a ton of friends with Xterras, they are basically cheaper 4Runners that hold up just as well. The titan is just like the tundra and the frontier is basically another cheaper Tacoma. It’s really a nice alternative to Toyota products that everyone and their mom already has.
Yeah I really do like the WJ. I meant to do a under 10k video and include the WJ but the used car market went nuts almost immediately after I dropped this video. When the market goes back to normal I’ll do that.
Yeah it’s a really great vehicle. Probably my favorite on this list. They’ve gone up a lot since I made this video thought the higher miles ones are still below that though. They can run really high miles though so it’s not a big deal.
@@OXFOOT : Are they easy to mod out or (expensive)? I'm looking to get one ( cheap as possible) and do a suprise vacation in Colorado with my 3 oldest boys. I would like to take them on some 4x4 trails with intermediate to moderate trails and enjoy the scenery while camping in remote places there. I've been looking up and basically boiled it down to the (08 4runner w/4.0 or 4.7), (mid 2000's double cab Tacoma w/ a 4.0), or (02-08 GX470), Still on the fence with the v8 although everything has been positive.
K5 Blazer. Best ever. And they were affordable. Heavy duty suspension was an option. Easy to modify. Low tech but it worked. Limited slip difs were more popular back then. Limited slips were also put on the steer axle and gave better steering than a locker. The Bronco was just as capable. Hard to find now.
I’m doing a “retrolanding” series soon and I’m going to start with the ramcharger but I’m pretty sure if I can find an old blazer that would make it to the list. They would be individual videos though.
I just picked up a 2003 grand cherokee WJ 130k miles with the 4.0 paid 1k. I added a 3 inch lift, viper coil and some used off road tire. Sending this from moab ut and can keep up or out preform everyone I'm with. WJ is a great budget 4x4.
Yeah the cherokees we’re going to get more love in the next video on 10k budget trucks but the used car market is so crazy right now that I couldn’t make another video on used cars when the market keeps going higher.
My incredibly biased vote is the XJ I own a 99 with the 4.0 it’s pretty damn good. I take it camping and even drive it around town a lot. It’s easy to maintain and I’ve been able to fix things with basic tools when I’m out on trails. Even on stock ride height with some nice AT tires you can do some fun things. My only complaint is the overheating living in California with the heat it did tend to over heat but there are some good kits available to fix cooling issues. Highly recommend the XJ for people not only getting into overlanding but also to learn working on cars.
XJ is really great. Thanks for the first hand experience! Even though we are high up in elevation it still gets hot here so I’m sure we’d have to do the same here.
Have six different Jeeps and the electronics on all Jeeps Suck, and all owners have some kind of electronic issues, Thanks Chrysler shitty quality control. Will never own another Jeep. LOL, 4 runner or Xterra, most reliable capable SUVs out there.
Yea you're not going to find a decent buildable samurai for $500 unless you just stumble upon one that someone doesn't know their value/popularity. So that's just luck. If you go with a samurai plan on replacing the stock engine& transmission/transfer case with something with more power & reliability. That's not an optional suggestion, it's mandatory.
This video is great! Thank you for showing how to do it on a realistic budget. I have a 2001 gmc full size with an aluminum Leer topper on it. I built it out with solar and battery for under $10,000 total cost, its been my best buddy for almost 5 years now.
I feel like the Rav4 (especially the V6) and Crv are slept on. I also feel like anything that's 4wd will satisfy if you slap some decent tires on them.
For sure. I think as an overlander the rav4 and the CRV are great. I think even though I consider myself more of an overlander than an offroader theres stuff I do that they couldn’t but 90% of the offroading I do I think a rav4 with good tires could do it.
@@keponen8142 I get what you mean. I think for overlanding they are really great but they aren’t going to be able to do a lot of the tough stuff. I think I could make a video making that distinction.
I love those things! I wish I’d have bought one when they were still super cheap back in 2020-2021. In my area you can’t find them for under 20k here anymore. Hoping the market comes down. Also if you have a Facebook you should join the GXOR group now that you have one. Such a helpful group of people with questions And modification goals.
You put the EXPEDITION and the most unreliable years of the F-150 on this list but left out the Grand Cherokee, Ram, and the Silverado/Sierra, blows my mind.
@OXFOOT you should do tier list videos. They're mainly voice-overs and simple search video clips. For example, you can do tier lists of not just vehicles but also of equipment as well. Quick cash, in my opinion. And try to keep it at no more than 10 examples. A RUclipsr named Yammie noob blew up off of top 10s. And all he talks about is motorcycles. Dont be yourself be a character. Maybe a goofier or more entertaining version of yourself. James Humpfrey from Donut media blew up from screaming "mo POWA BABY!!" and acting like a retard-hick-bro version of his self. This RUclips stuff isn't hard. Just takes creativity.
Yeah I really like them. Wanted to do a video on budget American vehicles but the used car market went nuts. There would have been room for the H3 on that list,
I bought a 2014 GX460 premium a few years back for under 28k with less than 65k miles on it. I took it off-road trail a few months ago and I made it all the way to the top of the mountain without even locking the center differential.
Yeah they are really great buys. I almost traded my 5th Gen in to get one but I couldn’t find any in good condition for a good price during the used car price explosion. Should have done it back when I dropped this video.
Great video! My vote goes to the GX in the vehicles you reviewed in this video. Great bank for the buck, fantastic reliability, and a little bit of luxury.
I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with QDII. I bought it for about 10k, then added an Old Man Emu 2" HD lift on it and 1.5" Spider Trax spacers on the wheels. So far, this Jeep is very good off-road doing trails. I paid a little more for it because it had 66k miles and zero rust.
Yeah I’m trying to make a list of off-roaders that didn’t spike in price too bad during the used car shortage. I think this era grand Cherokee will likely make the list. Pretty reliable and cheap even with the huge car shortage.
Loooove the Montero! My wife and I got one for 1k off a liquidation lot and it ran like a top. Had only 2wd but could do a lot more than you would think.
Damn, 1,000! That’s crazy cheap. Love those things but I just don’t see them out here in Colorado that much. I’m surprised they aren’t trying to remake them now that all these companies are redoing their offroad models from the past.
@@OXFOOT It was an absolute deal! The hardest car I've ever had to give up. It had so many great features modern cars just don't have. We had factory adjustable crossbars, two trunk compartments with removable lids that had cup holders built in. Pretty amazing ride
96 and 99 are the best 2 years of the XJ. I've got a 96 and it's a beast. And the 4.0 in mine must be bulletproof because someone put sugar in the gas tank and it still drove around 🤣
I do love those XJs. Growing up all the guys mudding their cars afterschool were the XJ guys and they beat those things and still had them running just fine.
One vehicle I think you failed to mention is the S Series pickup/Blazer and GMC Sonoma/Jimmy. The 4.3 liter V6 is a very reliable engine and I’m sure you could swap certain parts from the 88-98 OBS trucks.
I love OBS Chevy trucks. I am doing a video soon about my favorite over all budget trucks from 5-15k. Thinking maybe an OBS Chevy or GMC might make it’s way in the video.
I’ll take my yj. Paid 4k. Lots of after market support. I have a 4cyl so it just sips gas all day long. Best part is that it fits anywhere. Lift kits are cheap too because they have leaf springs. Much simpler than a tj.
you forgot to mention dodge dakota, I got mine off-roading a lot and was a solid truck. I got it with 250k miles and I have now 345k with good maintenance.
There was supposed to be two more videos with below 10k and below 5k but the market went nuts after this video so I put it off. Hopefully in the spring the market will go back to normal and I’ll try again. Dakota and Durango will likely both be on the next list.
I think the word got out on them and everyone is buying them up. In Denver at least the prices have gone up past 15 for some of them. I still check other places and they seem to be relatively the same. Might just be the used car shortage going on though.
Not a Ford guy myself, but on the expedition, if you really want a good one, try to find one being auctioned off buy the US Forest Service. It may need a new paint job, but they come upgraded from the factory with the f250 frame, and hd suspension, as well as up graded axles with posi trac "lockers" front and rear. I know posi trac aren't the best in the world, but if you learn how to drive them they work almost as well as selectable lockers. I have a buddy that has buys and fixes these up and sells them as a hobby. And, stay away from the 1997 XJs, they tend to have major electrical problems.
Hey I love my Gen 1 Montero, he’s like a mountain goat on trails haha. But I’m glad you put Montero’s on this list. Gen 2 I’d say is the best of the Montero’s if you want modern-ish amenities, but a cool uncommon car, especially if you plan to use it as an every day car. There’s some cheap ones around me under 5k still and they’re insanely capable stock, as well as all of the Montero’s. The sports kinda meh. Nice list!
Yeah I like the 2gen if it’s also your daily and you’re used to a modern vehicle. On the other hand the 1st Gen is way cooler. I don’t think you can really go wrong with either one.
I see a notice for a new Oxfoot video, I stop editing and watch it! That yellow Jeep on the opening clip 😍 😂. I might need to start looking at some of these now that I’m furloughed! Great video buddy!
@@OXFOOT I really like your list and have wheeled some of those as both my sister (Lexus and Chevy owner) and dad (Ford, Jeep, and Toyota owner) had many of those through the years. I’ll personally vouch for the TJ though as I owned and wheeled 3 of those. I still miss my 2000 TJ which I had for 10 years. Also, people may look for the LJ (the longer wheelbase TJ that was still a 2 door) as that’s a sought after Jeep... but they’re not cheap and it’ll be hard to find one under 15k I think. Great list... let’s go overlanding! I need to learn how to do it 🤣
Yeah I love the TJs. I learned to drive on a manual one. A 97 Sahara blue with the tan top. It was pretty solid although I didn’t really know what I was doing back then.
But yeah I’ve owned or my parents owned a few of these and honestly can say these are all pretty great. Wanted to add a Land Rover but couldn’t in good conscious do that to someone haha.
Found a 97 Gen 2 Montero LS (no rearlockers just center) with a good maintenance record for 5k in the beginning of 2022 (had to drive 8 hours just to get it). These are still pretty cheapish but rare to find. Aftermarket isn't as big as the others but it is manageable. Even at high mileage (200k) I haven't ran into any issues. Engines will last about 300K if maintenance is upkept. I will say they are slow on road but man do the shine off-road! One of the best parts is you avoid that Toyota Tax. You also get that rare factor because I never see them driving around as much (I've seen 2 driving around and 1in the scrap yard). 100% worth the buy and would do it again.
Yeah I often wonder if the aftermarket is better for the monteros outside of the US. I see them a lot more when I’ve traveled to other countries. Also yeah 200k is a lot for an American car but not really a Mitsubishi, Toyota or Nissan. I’m sure it’ll have some upkeep but not as bad as some other cars.
UPDATE TO THE VIDEO: The 3rd and 4th Generation 4Runners DO NOT have TRD models. I misspoke at 2:08. I've seen a good many of them around with this badge but this is just an aftermarket sticker. The Tacomas still do have the the TRD options offered. With the 4Runner still very much avoid the Pre Runner model.
Your not wrong but you can get trd parts like the supercharger for the 3.4 and many tacoma parts will bolt on. But that's aftermarket idk why they didn't make a offroad trd 3rd gen that be dope
@@soothingmeow22 yeah I'm also thrown off by the "trail" version. Like you already had a line called TRD why not just call it that ha. Toyota does some weird stuff sometimes.
3rd Gen 4Runner is 96-02 and the factory E-locker was an option at the beginning of the generation, Limited trims came with the E locker where SR5 models it was an upgrade option from factory
@@Drewhathaway Limiteds did not come with an e locker, it was an option on them as well. The 99-00 limiteds and all 01-02s had center locking diffs though, so you could run them awd Also, there still isn’t a prerunner 4Runner. They’re just rwds
@@parkermaness9504 yeah you’re right, i messed up by saying the limited runners came with lockers. Most limited models have them, but yes there are some that don’t have them.
That’s a hell of a deal. Good for you. Hopefully it stays cheap to maintain but worst case those things are something you can work one yourself no problem.
@@OXFOOT Lexus is owned by Toyota. On that note Would it be possible to swap a Toyota locker into a Lexus. Also if were talking budget you have to take into consideration things like insurance which is going to be much higher because of the company badge that is on the vehicle. Lexus being a high end brand they usually are almost double the rate as a Toyota.
I just bought a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with the Hemi, 116k miles for $6000 dollars. I am going to lift it and turn into a mild trail vehicle to take out west on vacations.
I’m doing a new video on budget trucks under 10 k and I think I want to end up putting this one in it. The grand Cherokee doesn’t have the same legend behind it as the Cherokee so I feel like it’s a better value.
Had a tough time finding anything within budget last year around this time, settled for an often overlooked 957 Cayenne GTS, thought about the Touareg as well but ultimately the V8 in the Cayenne sounded too good to pass up. Still a good video with some surprises like the Xterra, a vehicle I overlooked in my search.
Thanks! Yeah it took a lot of research on this one but not as much filming. Yeah I’m so ready to get back out there in the spring. Doing less trips this winter with a little puppy who can’t handle the cold well yet.
Got me an 02 ranger XLT damn near already built with 145k miles for 5800 so far after a month of ownership I'm happy it's my first vehicle so can't really argue with ill probably be getting one of the 09 through 2011 model rangers in the future to leave my 02 as more as my project truck
Rangers are great first cars. Now that they have the new generation by the time you are ready to move on to something else maybe those will be in your new price range. I think they are great cars and I hope they keep making them instead of putting a gap in production like they did before. The 09-11 is also a really great one especially if you’re looking for a daily.
Check out the second video that I did a few months ago. The H3 made it to the list a few repeats but a ton of new stuff. ruclips.net/video/7ru4CRVOeo8/видео.html
I went with a base model commander. I want to do a diesel and live axle swap so the v8s weren't a priority for me. BUT the commander 4.7 v8 with the tow package is hands down a great bang for the buck option as it had the center locker. Or the diesel grand cherokee 07 or 08. But they are hard to find and are typically expensive.
I almost bought a commander a few vehicles ago. They always reminded me of the LR discovery but American made. I didn't even know they made a diesel version. I really wish we got more Diesel options in the US.
Yeah they had a diesel commander in every country but ours... I'm not sure why people don't like diesel. I was going to get a 07 gx470 but decided against it only because of the price tag on them has gone up. The commander is a great overland option but doesn't have the cult jeep following as other models so aftermarket parts are hard to come by. There are more and more people coming around on them though.
Yeah I wish we had more of them in the states. We mostly got the “montero sport” which was more like a crossover. It’s hard to find a montero/pajero in the US that’s in good condition.
It's odd to see that you picked the expedition and not the explorer! The 1st and second gens are great vehicles all around. Not to mention the bronco II us also quite cheep and would have been a solid addition
I was going to add the explorer to a list that was exclusively under 10k but then the used car market went absolutely nuts. I think once the market comes back to normal I’ll try to do one of those videos.
Yeah I really wanted one in high school. They were just starting to get affordable enough to buy back then so a few buddies had them and I always thought they were super cool.
@@OXFOOT they have such a cult following now people will be rebuilding them for decades to come and in 20 years they'll all be Mad Max off road machines!
I know! It’s nuts! I should have bought one a few years back when I really wanted to but it’s too late now. The good thing about them though is that that engine is good for at least 400k so if you buy a 200k for 12k you still have a good bit of life left in them.
100k miles is nothing for the 2UZ motors...you have people snatching up 100-series for $15k all day long with close to 200k miles on them. I agree the overland tax sucks nowadays but still a solid buy!
The chevy colorado is a good choice to very reliable in terms of the engine lots of them will go to 500k as long as you do the regular maintenance such as oil changes on time, and they fit in the budget as well.
Yeah I always forget about the older colorados. I guess I always think of the Colorado as the most recent generation that costs a lot of money. I saw a V8 swapped one on a trail one time and it was one of the coolest builds I’ve ever seen.
@@Martin-mp9lx Funny enough a buddy of mine has the new one and it's one of the coolest vehicles from factory but he almost had to invoke some sort of lemon law because of how many times it was at the dealership getting the engine repaired.
I know! I may be (not so) secretly trying to buy a GX and sell the 4Runner at the moment. Honestly they are just out of control now. Saw a 2007 for sale at 19k the other day. People are wild!
Yeah months ago when I made this video they were a lot better priced. Now they are sitting anywhere from 12-20k. Sometimes I see them listed for over 20k but I doubt they get that in the end.
Well since no one else said it. JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE WJ!!! sub 5k jeep. super comfortable compared to the other jeeps on your list, and SEVERLY underrated
I actually had a video in mind doing one for sub 10k and then one sub 5k, then the used car market went ape sh*t and cars are almost couple their value. Once the market gets sorted I’ll have those videos.
two vehicles I would put on this list that everyone overlooks, is the Dodge Durango Gen 1 1998-2003, and Dodge Dakota Gen 2 1997-2004. Either one can be had for under $10,000, most often going for around $5,000-$7,000
@@OXFOOT I've had both, currently own a 2003 Durango I'm turning into an overland vehicle. They both come with plenty of power with your choice of V8 motors
Me who has 1994 Lada Niva 1.7 4x4 2121 who only costed to get for 600 euros , 100 euros for fixing it all of damage and 300 euro for only putting necessary off road modifications thats basically 1000 euro offroader perfectionest here not to mention it can be overlander easily sence its manual old school is better
Covid/stimulus screwed up all used vehicle prices. Before I could find several used 2008+ 4x4 Chevy and Ford pickups with arpumd 100k for between 10-15k. Now ypu have people asking 18k for a 200k 4x4 that isn't even that nice. If you go to a 2015 or so then they want 20-25k. My brother needed just any truck and ended up spending about 8-9k on a 2wd Chevy with a V6. He had been looking for 2 months and ran out of time and it was the nicest one for the price that looked like it wasn't beat to hell.
I have my 07 Nissan Xterra and love it !! I am slowly working on it upgrade and trying to make it better and better off roader and just adding mods and stuff )) my biggest thing would be to do a lift on it.. that I hope I could do it this summer .. really like working on it myself and making videos about it
I love the Xterra. It’s a really good platform for modifications and even stock it’s a pretty solid vehicle. I have a few friends that have them and they are really cool and also reliable.
@@OXFOOT That is so true !! my is still pretty stock no suspension upgrades yet and I went on some nice off road not too long ago and it did so wall so happy with it )
I agree with the Montero. I own a Pajero which is a 2.8 Turbo Diesel version from Japan. Excellent price and ZERO rust. But people seem to be catching on though. As long as you dont mind right hand drive.
I’m starting to see more and more monteros on the road now. I think the word is out on them. My aunt had a montero sport from 2001 until last year and while that’s not exactly the same thing it’s a pretty good testament to the quality.
@@OXFOOT i bought mine from an importer in Virginia. Its not the cheapest way but I paid a fair price for a well maintained vehicle with 80k miles. I recommend getting an auction sheet from dealer or using carvx to search history on car. Trucks arent as popular as Skylines and 180sx (where most horror stories occur) so finding a decent truck shouldnt be hard. I posted a video of my Pajero. You can search Japanese Classics Pajero to check it out
Yeah I have heard some pretty bad issues with those but I’ve also got friends with them that swear by them. If I was going 90s I’d honestly go taco over that any day of the week though.
A little insight on the monteros. On the Gen 2 monteros (92-97) you are looking for the "SR" model (92-97). You can tell them apart because they have fender flares. I would stay away from the early (92-93) SR because they only had a 3.0 V6 with 150hp. However, they still had the air locking rear diff with 4.63 gears and all of the interior commodities. 94-96 gen 2 is considered the most desirable gen 2 because of its DOHC 3.5l V6 that makes 215hp. They also have a factory body lift and kept the rear locker and 4.63 gears. 97 is a bit different although aesthetically the same as the other gen 2s. The 97 had a SOHC 3.5 that is much easier to work on than the DOHC but makes only 200hp. And while it still has the locking rear, it had 4.27 gears which limits you to 33s. Whereas the 4.63s are good with 35s and makes the rig a bit more peppy. Now onto gen 2.5s (98-2000). These all had 4.27 gears with the SOHC 3.5 but only the "winter package" of the 98/99 had the air locker. 2000s did not have the air locker option. No way to tell from the outside, but the winter package had heated leather seats and a big orange sticker located in the right knee area of the drivers position. Basically telling you how to use the locker. all of the gen 2/2.5s were solid rear with a torsion bar IFS. Now gen 3 monteros (2001-2006). All Gen 3s are IFS and IRS. 2001 and 2002 are 3.5 SOHC shared with the later gen 2s. The "limited" model of 01 and 02 had mitsus traction control system that is very good. 2003 and newer had the 3.8l SOHC V6 that makes 215hp and a bit more torque than the old 3.5. All 2003s and newer had the traction control system. Check My channel out for some montero action!
Just double check it’s an actual TRD. I can be common for people to just slap a sticker on it. Not as often as a hell cat or demon but I’ve seen it quite a bit.
This list is missing the Nissan Pathfinder (R50 and R51). One of the all time underrated 4x4 with a true low range. You can buy one for less than 10k. Then you modify it for under 10k (lift it, buy new tires, add a locker, bumpers, skid plates, etc.) and still be under 20k for something that's just as reliable as any Toyota.
I have no clue what the car market is like up there because it’s remote. The prices on these vehicles have gone up a bit since January when I first uploaded it.
@@OXFOOT the market, from what I've seen, is so so. There's alot of Fords, Chevys, Jeeps, and a shocking amount of Frontiers so I'm gonna try and narrow it to a choice between 2 of those if I can't find I can't find a good 4runner. Again thank ya for the helpful list and the replies.
Got my gx470 from a old man, 03 non nav model 95k miles all service done at the Lexus dealer it was bought at! Timing belt done at 94k so I know I’ll get at minimum another 250k miles out of this truck and at only 17K I got a great deal. My buddy bought on 07 170K lifted for 26K
Oh yeah they have gone up a lot since this video. Now that deal your friend got would be considered a really good deal. I guess the word is out on the GX. Good for you on that GX, hell of a vehicle.
I own a GX460, and agree with you. The 470 is the best of what you mentioned. I'm sure the 460 would have made the list but they are still all over the 20k mark, and will be for some time yet. Any of the 4runners and GX series trucks are a top pick for me.
There was a little while there where you could get the first few years of the GX460 for less than the 470 because if the hype. After this video the market went nuts and I’ve seen GX 470s for 30k now. I’m starting to lean towards the 460 being the better deal because they aren’t as hyped.
I’m thinking about getting a 1st Gen tundra to build out. I’m hoping they are as reliable as everyone says. The aftermarket support seems to be pretty lacking though. Hopefully I can find the info I need to build it out how I want.
I almost bought a older dodge Durango but the guy sold it out from under me, it had a big v8, 4wd, and some oversized tires. I ended up getting a 1st gen kia sorento for $1500, its a body on frame straight axle, 4wd with a limited slip rear diff, and a surprisingly powerful v6. It reminds me of a poor mans 4 runner. Haven’t had to do much to it other then oil changes and patching the self inflicted wounds
Because a lot of people are pointing it out. This video was made before the insane increase of used car prices. Some of these cars have creeped above the 15k mark. Some of the GXs are going for over 20k. These cars are still really good value for the money but just not that all cars have increased in price since I first uploaded this video.
Hopefully the prices will go back to normal soon!
@@OXFOOT the market will crash eventually, i suggest anyone to wait atleast a year or maybe less to buy a whip
It's probably more like our money is worth a lot less, so price might not come down
WHAT ABOUT FORD AN DODGE HEAVY DUTY EX CAB SIX FOOT BED 4X4 ? I NO THE NEWER ONES ARE WAY TO BIG. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE OLDER ONES? THEYLL CRUSH EVERTHING YOU NAMED ON THIS VIDEO FOR OVER LANDING. 2nd gen Nissan hardbody said hold my beer while I go pull these fools out
Not everybody appreciates them, but the Xterra and the Frontier are not to be slept on, especially the Pro-4x trim levels
Yeah I’ve always really liked the Xterra. Seems like a lot of the folks in the comments don’t agree but I still like them.
I have an Xterra Pro-4x with a 2” OME lift and 33” general grabber x3’s. The thing just doesn’t get stuck, period. I do wish it had a little more bottom end grunt to it ,but it’s an amazing rig
I was stationed in Hawaii when the Xterra came out. They were an instant hit out there. I’ve always wanted one.
The blue frontier in the water is actually my truck lol
Another black sheep is the Dacia Duster, they are cheap and reliable with great fuel economy and they work perfectly well in all climates.
5:34 dude falls over a rock, distracts me from everything 😂
Yeah I had to leave that in as an Easter egg for folks to find lol.
Thank god somebody else was as distracted as me. I rewatched him fall like five times
came here to agree
Came here and literally went back to 5:34 just to see 😂 ... then rewinded it 5 times. He nearly tipped the rock over 😂
Those GX470's are going up in prices due to people are grabbing them up for overlanding now.
I may be filming a video about GXs this Friday. Maybe I’ll try to knock the price down a bit with some cons. (Not that I have that much influence ha).
Yup here in Texas 2008 GX average price is 17k ! Will a Chevy blazer cut it? Lol
I just picked up mine and drove it 15 hours out to Colorado. It has 262,00 miles and is flawless
Yes they are. I almost bought one 2 years ago but sadly didn't. Now they are 5 to 9k more expensive in my area.
How much have they gone up in the last few years? I caught the S2000 bump and am spoiled by appreciating cars.
Its good seeing the small trucks getting attention. I love Rangers, Tacos, and Frontiers! Small truck gang for life
Yeah I’ve got a little dream to turn a small truck like maybe a ranger into a pre runner. Maybe one day if this channel takes off and I can use it as a tax write off lol. Love rowdy little trucks.
@@OXFOOT I had the mazda version - great little truck but man I wish i got it with the bigger engine - the 3.0L was pretty gutless.
He clearly was biased towards Ford and Toyota. He put an Expedition on this list. A trail hawk Renegade will out off road an Expedition.
not clickbaity like most list vids, refreshingly succinct and very informative. subbed.
Thanks I appreciate it. I try my best to do what I actually say in the title. I hate clickbait so I don’t want to spread it. Thanks!
That’s a really cool build. I see one around me that’s very similar stats and looks really cool. They are just so hard to find.
I hate that we don’t really get the full market of Isuzus in the US. A lot of youtubers I follow outside of the US have some really cool ones.
Why is independent rear suspension a compromise in 4x4? What is the more favorable suspension?
@@quidipher significantly less articulation and travel. Solid axles are more favorable, like in a Jeep, pickup truck or SUVs like 4Runner and XTerra.

the 99 4runner had an elocker option as well, also had the multimode transcase which in the 4runner circles is considered to be better than later iterations.
I don’t know why they are so rare though.
5:35 looking at the tundra review you can see at the right how the guy in green falls down 🤣👌
Yeah I thought about editing around that but left it in for people to see it. Might as well.
I ran to the comments looking for this one right here☝🏻
I never filmed a video on it but my best friend had an 07' Xterra till he traded it in for a Taco and I loved working on it.
Ha.

The Jeep’s straight 6 is as bulletproof as a gasoline engine gets… also pro4x frontier has the same 4.0 v6 as the other frontiers
Yeah I’m not one of those Toyotas that discounts jeeps. My mom had one for many miles and I actually learned to drive on that TJ. Pretty solid vehicle.
I have a Pro4x Frontier and I can confirm this
the frontier is under rated
@@alphawolf2993 very.
It’s really a nice alternative to Toyota products that everyone and their mom already has.
yezzzir! My titan swapped frontier is a beast lol.
Jeep WJ is also a phenomenal off-road / overland vehicle. Can get it with either to 4.0 or 4.7 and both are nearly bulletproof
Yeah I really do like the WJ. I meant to do a under 10k video and include the WJ but the used car market went nuts almost immediately after I dropped this video. When the market goes back to normal I’ll do that.
Amen. The WJ has its quirks, but so far I mostly like my 04. It's pretty capable with the Quadradrive 4WD option too, as far as a stock vehicle goes.
Grand cherokees are slept on like the 2nd gen sequoia.
I just bought my first offroad rig before I saw your video. I went with 07 GX470 and couldn't be happier.
Yeah it’s a really great vehicle. Probably my favorite on this list. They’ve gone up a lot since I made this video thought the higher miles ones are still below that though. They can run really high miles though so it’s not a big deal.
@@OXFOOT :
Are they easy to mod out or (expensive)? I'm looking to get one ( cheap as possible) and do a suprise vacation in Colorado with my 3 oldest boys. I would like to take them on some 4x4 trails with intermediate to moderate trails and enjoy the scenery while camping in remote places there. I've been looking up and basically boiled it down to the (08 4runner w/4.0 or 4.7), (mid 2000's double cab Tacoma w/ a 4.0), or (02-08 GX470), Still on the fence with the v8 although everything has been positive.
I love my 2001 xterra. 190,000 miles and running strong. Super reliable and great offroad. I've never been stuck in my xterra.
They really are underrated. I don’t know why they don’t hold their prices like Toyotas. It’s essentially the same thing as a 3rd or 4th Gen.
B-Roll offroad has one and it does everything he does just fine.
@@OXFOOT probably because of the radiator/coolant issues? One of the first things to look at when checking out an xterra is strawberry milk.
@@goatee21 thats on the 2nd gen 2005 and newer. The first gens had a separate trans cooler from the radiator.
@@plav032 good to know!
K5 Blazer.
Great Video! Made sure to comment for the algorithm. Glad you said that in your Instagram story! I never knew!
Thanks so much for the help! It’s honestly the best way to help the channel grow!
I'm 51 and picked up a third gen with only 125k granny getter for 2k and alot wrong with it but 2 years and 12k later it's a offroad beast
Hell yeah! I’m guessing you mean 3rd Gen 4Runner?
@@OXFOOT yes lol sorry for got to put that in lol
Owner of 2 Suzuki samurai's, find one for $500 and use the rest of the budget on building it and it's a awesome toy that will turn heads
Man I wish you could find them that cheap around me. Maybe I haven’t looked close enough but I feel like $500 would get you a frame of one at most.
I think even though I consider myself more of an overlander than an offroader theres stuff I do that they couldn’t but 90% of the offroading I do I think a rav4 with good tires could do it.
they might be alright but they aren't 4wd they're awd
rav4 and crv are crossovers not offroaders, not even full time 4wd. you need low range and diff locks
@@keponen8142 I get what you mean. I think for overlanding they are really great but they aren’t going to be able to do a lot of the tough stuff. I think I could make a video making that distinction.
@@OXFOOT would be a interesting watch, most ppl dont get the difference. I'd take the Rav4 in snow but wouldnt trust it to take me camping
Landrover L3 hands down the best overland which is pretty much capable of handling everything thrown at it
Awesome man! Really like this style.
Thanks! This this was sort of a pain to edit though. If it’s popular I might try something like this again.
You’re a great salesman! Just bought drove my 04 GX470 home with a starter overland build! Greats times ahead 🎉
I love those things! I wish I’d have bought one when they were still super cheap back in 2020-2021. In my area you can’t find them for under 20k here anymore. Hoping the market comes down. Also if you have a Facebook you should join the GXOR group now that you have one. Such a helpful group of people with questions
And modification goals.
3rd gen 4 runners were 96 - 2002 model years and the e-locker was discontinued in 01. The 01 and 02 switched from a T case to locking center diff.
Yeah I need to get more familiar with those. I’d love a 3rd Gen or 1st Tacoma SASed out on 40s. Thanks for the clarification.
@@OXFOOT Thanks for the video! I have been looking for a family off road vehicle and been considering many of theses.
Yeah I think I made a mistake sinking all that money into my 5th Gen 4Runner. I really should have gone the more budget friendly route.
You put the EXPEDITION and the most unreliable years of the F-150 on this list but left out the Grand Cherokee, Ram, and the Silverado/Sierra, blows my mind.
Was going to make more of these in 15, 10,5k range but with all the work in these videos they don’t make hardly any money.
The Hummer h3 is a great option too. I got mine with the v8 for just over $15k and they are very capable.
Yeah I really like them. Wanted to do a video on budget American vehicles but the used car market went nuts. There would have been room for the H3 on that list,
Are the H3 just as reliable as well?
😅😅😅😅 offroad ready with a thirst for your wallet
I bought a 2014 GX460 premium a few years back for under 28k with less than 65k miles on it. I took it off-road trail a few months ago and I made it all the way to the top of the mountain without even locking the center differential.
Yeah they are really great buys. I almost traded my 5th Gen in to get one but I couldn’t find any in good condition for a good price during the used car price explosion. Should have done it back when I dropped this video.
Great video! My vote goes to the GX in the vehicles you reviewed in this video. Great bank for the buck, fantastic reliability, and a little bit of luxury.
Yeah they are my favorite but they have gone up quite a bit since this video for sure.
@@OXFOOT mines pretty beat but it never misses a lick starting up and going through a mud hole lol.

Yeah I learned to drive on the TJ but I do have a special place for the YJ from childhood.
The dude in lime green at 5:34 was so amazed by Toyota's performance that he lost balance.
Lol, I had to leave that in there while editing.

There was supposed to be two more videos with below 10k and below 5k but the market went nuts after this video so I put it off. Hopefully in the spring the market will go back to normal and I’ll try again. Dakota and Durango will likely both be on the next list.
Awesome video! I’m keeping my eyes peeled for a GX470
I think the word got out on them and everyone is buying them up. In Denver at least the prices have gone up past 15 for some of them. I still check other places and they seem to be relatively the same. Might just be the used car shortage going on though.
Still 18k ish in los Angeles I got a lx470 for 9k with 150k miles

If I ever get a whole garage full of off-roaders I’d love to have a 1st gen in the mix.
@@OXFOOT Yeah if I could describe driving my Gen 1 SWB, it would be "loud", its a tall steel box, you hear so much wind noise haha but I love it

And thanks bud. Hope all that editing goes well for you. At least you’re making the most of your time away from work. Make money one way or another!
Toyota tax is so real, especially in Colorado. It’s astronomical!

I made a part two to this video feature IG the Cayenne as the thumbnail and main feature. They are really great vehicles.

Rangers are great first cars. Now that they have the new generation by the time you are ready to move on to something else maybe those will be in your new price range. I think they are great cars and I hope they keep making them instead of putting a gap in production like they did before.
FYI The Montero is also the Pajero in Europe. Thats a solid SUV!
Expedition is cooler because I have one
I really regret never owning an XJ, they're just such a legendary truck!
It's gonna need a lot of parts... I wheel mine minimally but still manage to bust it up.
Yeah those GXs are going for nearly 20k under 100k miles though :/ makes me sad I didn’t know about them sooner cause everyone wants them now.
I know! It’s nuts! I should have bought one a few years back when I really wanted to but it’s too late now. The good thing about them though is that that engine is good for at least 400k so if you buy a 200k for 12k you still have a good bit of life left in them.
At this point they are almost as much as a 6 year old 4Runner.
100k miles is nothing for the 2UZ motors...you have people snatching up 100-series for $15k all day long with close to 200k miles on them. I agree the overland tax sucks nowadays but still a solid buy!
@@OutdoorEdition for real! The 2UZ is going to be my next build for sure.

Yeah months ago when I made this video they were a lot better priced. Now they are sitting anywhere from 12-20k. Sometimes I see them listed for over 20k but I doubt they get that in the end.
Well since no one else said it. JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE WJ!!! sub 5k jeep. super comfortable compared to the other jeeps on your list, and SEVERLY underrated

two vehicles I would put on this list that everyone overlooks, is the Dodge Durango Gen 1 1998-2003, and Dodge Dakota Gen 2 1997-2004. Either one can be had for under $10,000, most often going for around $5,000-$7,000

I recommend getting an auction sheet from dealer or using carvx to search history on car. Trucks arent as popular as Skylines and 180sx (where most horror stories occur) so finding a decent truck shouldnt be hard. I posted a video of my Pajero. You can search Japanese Classics Pajero to check it out
Avoid 90's 4Runners with the 3.0.
Worst engine ever made. Can't keep head gaskets on them for love nor money.
Yeah I have heard some pretty bad issues with those but I’ve also got friends with them that swear by them. If I was going 90s I’d honestly go taco over that any day of the week though.
I love my Xterra! It’s lifted on 33s and super capable
I really like the Xterra, I used to wheel with some guys that had them and they were super capable and way cheaper than my set up.
1999 xj limited! 😈
Probably will see that in the next one. I’ve got a sub 10k tier list and just a general all around budget vid coming.

@@OXFOOT Thanks man!
Just double check it’s an actual TRD. I can be common for people to just slap a sticker on it. Not as often as a hell cat or demon but I’ve seen it quite a bit.
Yeah for sure I think the 3rd Gen TRD is just a 4Runner with a sticker. I misspoke.
Appreciate the list. I just recently moved to Alaska for work and am in the market for somethin that can handle the terrain/weather up here.
I have no clue what the car market is like up there because it’s remote. The prices on these vehicles have gone up a bit since January when I first uploaded it.
Also there’s a group I’m in where a guy dailys an old Ferrari in Fairbanks I believe. It’s a wild sight.
I picked a 1991 Suzuki SideKick JLX.
It’s got a 1.6l 4 cylinder.
Rear lockers
4” lift
M/T tires
I can go anywhere except major rock crawling.
That’s a solid pick. Sounds like a super rowdy little rig. You drive it out to wheel or you trailer it?
@@OXFOOT it’s my daily driver work bucket. Lol
Great video. I always liked the Seqouias for the space and also the Ford Excursion, abit heavy but it's actually awesome
I kinda want to buy a sequoia now but they are actually going up in price now too. It’s tough to buy an older Toyota anymore.
We got a 2003 sequoia.. love it, perfect overland truck.big, but not too big.
I’m thinking about getting a 1st Gen tundra to build out. I’m hoping they are as reliable as everyone says. The aftermarket support seems to be pretty lacking though. Hopefully I can find the info I need to build it out how I want.
@@OXFOOT check with brute force fab.He Made both bumpers for the sequoia and my Rock sliders..
Yeah that’s who I’ve been looking at. The forums seem to say either them or coastal but coastal I’d have to DIY.
Just bought an 08 4runner, BEAUTIFUL condition for 12k
Damn that’s a good deal. Wish I had gone that route sometimes. My 5th Gen TRDOF was stupid expensive. They are way overpriced in my opinion.
