Hey Ed. Great topic for record collectors. If your viewers would like additional information regarding original first pressings and reissues, I did a whole show on that subject in Episode 6 of "the Collecting the King Show" on RUclips. TCB!
Each side of the inner sleeve can be printed at different times. Sometimes they only have to change ONE side of the inner sleeve to update it. This was especially true when on side featured soundtrack LPs and the other side featured studio LPs. Gold Records v4 was the newest LP in 1968 (Speedway was not yet released), the soundtrack side from 1967 still featured the latest from 1967, Clambake.
What I understand as identifiers: Lower “S” numbers in deadwax Means earlier release Inner sleeve matches up with the catalog that was available at the time of release (year) Label- flat black labels ran thru 63, new brighter gloss label w brighter white dog on top ran from 64-68, orange labels began in late 68’ /early 69’ with the TV Special album There were also changes in the bottom of early labels where it would say Monaural, Mono, Living Stereo or Stereo, the fonts also changed along the way, don’t know the details of all these changes, good video ! TCB Ed ⚡️
Very interesting video Ed 👍 Still and allways will be an incredible album ....I have several 1960 pressings ....up there as one of Elvis greatest releases!! Cheers 🥂
Hey, ed all the information you give is spot on. Another thing you can do on elvis' records look at the back in one of the four corners. If there is a small number usually it tells you what pressing you have matches the matrix no. If no number, low pressing. Rca and Columbia did this through the years. So did other company's. Love all your videos. Thanks.
Fala colega!! Exelente coleção!! Parabéns, tenho o LP Orange selado!! O lp brasileiro ( Brasil e lindo selo azul lp rígido) .Ricardo Barragat Teresópolis rj
Hi Ed I never knew that anything was etched in the dead wax area of any disc. You knowledge is AWESOME. I have looked at my ELVIS vinyl and some are low S numbers. Some are hand etched and some are stamped. i will look again at them when i have better light 😊👍👍👍👍👍👍
It's not best to go by inner sleeve on a used record because the sleeve could have been changed over the years. I think catalog number is more important than matrix. It's almost impossible if someone only wants to catalog 1S/1S copies and deems those as the only original. Also, there's no guarantee that the 1S was released first or hit the stores first.
Great video as always Ed, hope you are well! I believe one of the best resources to go to for Elvis LPs and 45s is a book called Presleyana by Jerry Osborne, Presleyana VIII is the newest edition. It is a wonderful guide and really a must have for collectors of Elvis Presley Lps and 45s. It also talks about the Elvis RCA sleeves, different covers, ect.
Neither of your EIB LP (one stereo one mono) that have the song titles printed in the album cover art are original pressings. The original pressings either had the yellow sticker, or less commonly, no song titles on the cover at all. So you have ONE original issue of EIB. As for stampers, every issue had several different stampers to keep up with the production demands. The mono one is before October of 1964. The stereo one is definitely after spring of 1968, even though the stamper on that one side was created in 1967. One has to go with the evidence that indicated the latest possible date as eariler date indicators certainly can carry over for some time. Your yellow sticker stereo copy in the most sought-after version of this LP on RCA.
Thanks Ed very interresting and informative. I like to ad that RCA started with the orange label in 1968( I believe) . However there was some overlap and you can possibly come across orange and black labels as well in 1968. I think Speedway was the first Elvis RCA with the new RCA logo and orange label. In the case of Elvis is back is very difficult if you really have the first pressing, since allready during it's initial run in 1960, there were multiple pressings allready.
Thanks, very helpful. I have EP's that definitely were pressings from the year they were originally released...'56, '57...with low #S in the deadwax (?) Do you know if these very early EP's (Heartbreak Hotel, Peace In The Valley, Jailhouse Rock) came with inner sleeves? Mine don't have them. My Mom got them in the '50's when they first came out. She was a HUGE fan from the start...can't imagine she would have lost any inner sleeves if they came with them.
Hey Ed, great job. Going to Discogs is great advice because sometimes (for various reasons) stampers are not used and abandoned so a first pressing may sometimes not be a 1-s, but a 2-s or even a 3-s. Stuff happens. So yes, a 1-s is almost always an original pressing, but later numbers can be as well. Did I just confuse everyone even more? Take care...
hi. I have the Elvis Presley Young Man with the Big Heart disc, but also a letter from Tom Parker and photos, and an original entry ticket for a show 11 Oct 1956 in mint condition. My husband has an entire box of Elvis records but he died on 20.11.23, so I need to sell.
Hi Ed, it was a pretty nice video, but I believe people may have got a little confused . Inner sleeves and stamper numbers are not the way to see if a record is first pressing. You have to learn date issues. You have the very first Living Stereo pressing, the difference between later pressings is because this has the tracklist on a yellow sticker glued to cover. In those days things needed quite a time to get ready , so they used this picture of Elvis taken in Frankfurt on May, 1959, had jacket pressed before Elvis even recorded the songs. when they had tracklist defined, they printed on this sticker and glued to jacket. Later issues that by the way you've showed had tracklist printed on jacket and no longer sticker. Also, the first issue had RCA VICTOR on top silver letters, this label was until 1964 when they changed RCA VICTOR to White letters, so White Top is from 1964/1968. In 1968 the Nipper was taken out and it came the rigid orange label with deep groove. in 1971 rigid vinyl were discontinued and they started pressing flexi records with flat orange labels( that's the one you've shown) Discogs is the best way to learn these details. Your later issues are White Top so those usually have higher number stampers. Inner sleeves could have been switched, Elvis is Back inner sleeve usually would come inside G.I Blues and His Hand in Mine LPs, but it varied. it was never only one same sleeve. Take care!
I hear ya. That’s why I made a follow up video pointing people to Robert’s video discussing the topic, because he is more knowledgeable than I am on this. I appreciate your input. Take care. 👍✌️
Great job on explaining this subject. Ed in my collection I have the Chipmunks first album and the matrix number for it is not listed in the Liberty records catalog, they told me

Thank you, Ed. Interesting as always. Think about, the innersleeve could have been changed through the years, so i always take a look at the label and Matrix-number. If you have signed to discogs, please take look at my collection.. 'Milewalker' is my username. Feel free to leave me a note. I am preparing to do some videos of my collection. I have to ask you about the upcoming Elvis movie. I saw a video of "Memphis mafia kid" where Elvis`s family really disapproves of the upcoming movie. Billy Smith doesn`t even want to watch it. They reacted to Tom Hanks fake "accent" of Tom Parker as being fake. Parker didn`t have an accent according to Smith, and if he did Elvis would have known he was an illegal alien. What do you think about this issue?
If you are an ELViS purist then this film may not be for you ? 1s, 4s, etc are stamper numbers. They’d make several stampers because it would get worn from pressing so many copies.
The inner sleeve with Elvis Is Back on it first came with GI Blues, I believe.
It’s entirely possible my copy was “Frankensteined”. I’m not the original owner. 👍✌️
Thanks for the as always fantastic video Ed. I am off now to look at some of my albums to see if I can work out when they were pressed!
Hi Ed thankyou for that help me out must help lots us elvis fans out keep up with great video take care my friend

Right on Ed. So many variables and combinations there of to date a record issue. Other variables to consider are hype stickers and inserts.
The Elvis Record Database is also a good source for pressing information.

Wasn’t the S number referring to the stamper used to press the record? 1S first stamper, 4S forth stamper and so on

Is this the same with 45's? I'm not completely sure if I have original 45's
I believe so…
I have a genuine, first printing of Elvis’s golden records. What would you say the value of such a thing is
Depends on condition of the record and cover. Beat up, a couple of dollars. Minty could be over $100 depending on the pressing.
