    going to try to air seal working around the old insulation, not too thick but still, fully convinced that air sealing will pay forever in savings and comfort.

    When you consider the new attic insulation in your home, it generally serves the three-in-one service i.e. rodent control, increased energy efficiency, and improved R-Value.

    Thank you for sharing this! My Camarillo insulation contractor told me to replace it after 15 years to assure it is doing the job you need it to. Pure Eco Inc. was one of my best choices for getting the attic cleaning services done!

    Our house was built in 1980,and its in amazing condition..absolutely beautiful and spotless inside,but I was in the attic 2 weeks ago and an accumulation of dust,tree particles and all kinds of other outside junk has come in through the 3 vents on the roof..and its starting to make our house stink..I noticed it beginning this summer when here in Texas its very hot and had that old nasty insulation cooking and just the most awful smell in out house..I have someone coming to pressure test the attic area and to find the places where its leaking from and refill/repair/replace whatever needs to be done..the old insulation is a combination of fiberglass and blow-in,so its all getting removed first,then the pressure tests and then all nice new fresh insulation..yaaah ! Also switching to newer better style vents..no more junk coming in like with the spinning vents types.

      @@toriscott9285 It cost about $6200 for the old to be hand removed and new blow in at r39 value..that is close to 18" worth..it has made a huge difference in heat or cold retention..worth every penny paid and then some!

    At 1:43 they're sealing around an old electrical box with very old wiring. Now that there is no insulation, this would be a great time to rewire the house! Get rid of all that old, ungrounded wiring with possibly fraying insulation and replace it with new Romex. Then install the new attic insulation. In fact, I see other potential electrical Code violations around the attic. A rewire will take care of those as well.

      If there are openings within the ducts due to damage, or areas where the walls and ceilings might have opened up and broken the seal, then it is a possibility.

      Not really. Once its removed just buy a decent face mask (N95 at a minimum or a respirator.. cost for mask alone ranges from $20-50 depends on you) then you have the option to blow in or lay batts. Blown-in you need to either have someone do it, or rent the machine from a store. For batts you can do it yourself, it will take more time, but you'll have a consistent R-Value across. But with batts you have to place 2 layers. The first layer is between the studs with a faced layer (face down) and then the second layer of the batt is run perpendicular with unfaced insulation because you want to cover the studs to eliminate thermal bridging. I prefer batts personally, at least if you don't plan on using your attic for storage. If you want to use batts for storage you'll need to build a raised platform and then put your perpendicular layer inside of it then cover the top with plywood so it's a bit more work for a storage area. For cost on insulation with batts (unsure on blown-in but I'm sure its about similar) you're looking at about $50-60 for about 60sq ft.

    • @coolramone

      It depends. I got a quote from an insulation company to re-insulate (batt) a 700 to 800 square foot attic area for $4k or $5k. He said it cost that much because he had to remove the old insulation first. My LAYG DIY (Learn As You Go, Do It Yourself) calculation is near $800 (R19) & $1250 (R5 foam board). I would put in 50% more insulation than the bare minimum R19 in a typical 2 by 6 rafter by adding rigid foam (and plywood). R19 $1/sq ft, 2 inch rigid foam $1.56/sq ft, (plywood ~$1/sq ft), (plus $100 for 2x10s).
      Rigid foam is more expensive but is more compact so you don’t have to raise the attic floor as much, and it is more durable and air sealing. It doesn’t settle.

    What about mold does mold grow on insulation hmmmm?

    • @bentnickel7487
      @bentnickel7487 4 года назад +1

      Not normally. There are many types of insulation, but most dry quickly, if wet, and mold comes from material that STAYS wet. If you have a hole in your roof and rain and snow keep it wet, I'd worry first about electricals in the ceiling being damaged, before I would concern myself with mold.
