A few small errors but not bad. 1000 feet is vertical separation, alternates aren't filed for emergencies but for weather considerations, airline flights are planned, filed, and monitored at all times by licensed dispatchers (many of whom are pilots as well), and ATC doesn't determine the most efficient route for cost. I'm a licensed pilot, dispatcher, and air traffic controller so I kinda have a little experience here ;) It's a fun and dynamic industry and there's too much for a 4 minute video.
ok i thought of it a little differently i see how there doing it with transponders and radar differences now. And no the cellphone isn't on the same frequency nor probably the same modulation so its more an issue with ping the cellphone towers being the issue as you go .

pretty nice vid, although it left out some information, such as not all aircraft in the sky fly under a flight plan as well as the concept of "see and avoid", but still good overall.

You don’t have to file a flight plan, part 121 carriers do and most 135 do because it’s smart but at any given time there are thousands of small airplanes cruising around the country with no flight plan. In populated areas these planes request a flight fallowing from ATC where they receive a transponder code so that they are more obvious to atc. You then have controllers on the ground and your eyes in the sky watching for traffic but that plane can still go anywhere they want fallowing the rules of the airspace they are in.
RADAR, as a primary source of tracking ALL aircraft, is about to change. As of January 1, 2020, all airplanes, even general aviation planes, will be required to have special transponders that will not primarily reply to Radar. Instead, they will respond to ADS-B ground stations that coordinate with GPS satellites. The radar will still be available as a backup system. See FAA.gov. then go to ADS-B in the search box.
The ADS-B Stations will also be in Ocean areas so Air Traffic Controllers will be able to see and communicate with airplanes even over the far reaches of the Pacific ocean where Radar is limited. Of course, a suicidal or hijacked pilot can still turn off the transponder, but these situations are extremely rare. I can only think of two occasions, Malaysia Airlines and the pilot who crashed into the mountain on purpose in Europe, that are recent. Given the thousands of flights daily, it is extremely rare for any plane to get lost. After 2020, it will almost impossible, unless foul play is involved.

They just dont. Planes have their entire route planned and programmed into the plane before they even push back, they have gps to help guide them but the plane also has redundant backup inertial navigation systems that will allow it to find it's destination/waypoints even if gps went down for some reason, and aside from that they have ATC who can see them on radar and give them a vector (heading) to get back on track if everything were to fail, not only do they have that but they have VHF omi-directional range (vor) equipment that will tell them how far they are from a particular beacon on a sectional or tac chart, and they have DF or direction finding equipment that can tell them what bearing a radio navigation beacon is off their nose, then they can determine their position by simple triangulation. There is just a ton of navigational stuff in planes and the job has been made multiply redundant by all these systems so they don't even need a dedicated crew member to be a navigator anymore like they used to in the old days where they had some guy in the back of the cockpit with a map a ruler and a compass who estimated how far the winds were pushing them off course etc.

you dont want to be closer than 1000 feet to an airplane (depends on which plane) because the thrust coming from the wing tip flap that is circle like will intervene with with the control of the plane and thereby you will lose a bit of control while flying. worst case scenario the plane will fall down and lose control.

Check with Office of Personell Management. You must be 31 years of age or younger. There are a lot of hoops to jump through, it takes about a year just to be hired. You must be patient. The job title is Air Traffic Control Specialist GS 2152 Good Luck!

Various things. Today it's most likely when the aircraft aren't under ATC control and in an airport environment where more aircraft are closer and bottlnecking toward or around the airport itself. You could also have airplanes flying in formation and colliding since any two planes can fly formation flights if both pilots agree to it.

i hope those videos of the purple and orange planes aren't what they actually use ... figured in 2016 they would have a display that is more than 2 frames per second and more than 20 pixels
Yes it is, only the ATC operators can zoom in a little and when they select the plane with their light pen it shows numbers next to it from it's transponder showing it's squawk code, altiude, airspeed, and heading. It takes a while for a radar dish to turn 360 thus the 2 fps you see which is quite fast as far as atc radar goes. This is why aircraft flying IFR have to follow ATC instructions EXACTLY to maintain adequate seperation.

747 and 787 for me. I've flown on the flight deck of 787s many times and it's a nice, quiet ride with lots of tech. I'd love to jumpseat on a 747-8 at some point. Virgin Atlantic is among my favorites :)

Some of it is. They're just very slow to get satellite based systems set up and so far the ground based systems work well. Pilots use GPS a lot more than ATC does.

Depends. I can plan straight flight paths that look like a straight line on a mercator map or a polar stereographic chart. One includes the curvature of the earth and the other assumes flat, like on paper. Naturally the flat one (mercator) shows an arc even if it flies along one parallel of latitude. It's kind of interesting!

still they haven't found MH370 & many more even with all the state of the art resources.
MH doesn't have dispatchers either. Nobody but ATC was watching over that flight and they were in a nonradar environment so it took a while to figure out the issue. My guess is a cockpit fire on the first officer's side near the oxygen mask. Captain turned toward the closest suitable airport but they lost consciousness or had to evacuate the cockpit due to smoke and heat, the autoflight system stayed on the heading selected by the captain when he turned, and it flew on that heading until running our of fuel and coasting down to maintain airspeed once altitude was unable to be maintained. They could've stood a better chance at finding it if they drew a vector beyond the airport they turned toward and factored in its fuel range and searched that cross section...

Yeah they've found parts of it. The bulk of the fuselage is at the bottom of the Indian I'm sure. I know some P3 pilots and other shipboard sailors who searched and yes, obviously they did do a lot but it would seem the first place they should've looked was where I mentioned. They didn't do that. I know I'm armchair quarterbacking here though!
