Great story and painting!! As an artist, I am almost ashamed to ask... was this done on an iPad?

Freud used Lead White for painting flesh and hair, but for everything else (clothes, walls, furniture etc) he used Titanium White.

Interesting! Thx for this, though that crumbly texture that Flake white gives seems to be throughout his paintings; at least the few I've seen
      in galleries.

@@JohnsArtStories I read it in a book by someone who sat for a portrait, it's called 'The Man with the Blue Scarf' or something like that, he says that Freud told him while they were talking that that's what he does, he said it's a sort of code.

@@jrb4935 Artists have such odd rituals. I remember being taught that an artist should never, ever use black paint!

Wow. So many inaccuracies. Firstly not all of his children are legitimate. His first two children were born during his first marriage. Secondly he did not die at the age of 80 he was 88 when he passed away which is kind of ironic because eight was his lucky number and any combination thereof. Cremnitz white and flake why are different paints as one contains zinc and the other one doesn’t and when you see interviews with his children he did not ignore them and later in life he was bigger parts of their life as well as his grand children.

Too true about the age! I got most of my source material from "Breakfast with Lucien", which is an unauthorized bio that may have been rushed to print after he died, and played up the sensational aspects of his life. Not his age though. That was purely my mistake. As for his kids, I'd say it's mixed - hardly a stand-up father/grandfather, though. Cremnitz white and flake white are very, very similar, but yes, not identical. They they both use lead, both are opaque whites. The zinc oxide is added to speed up drying. Thanks for this Sean. Wish I had a permanent fact-checker.

False. Flake White cannot be bought in most art stores. In fact, it is extremely difficult to find anymore, and has sadly become a far, far overpriced specialty item that will cost you dearly if you can ever find it. As for this video supposedly in the style of L. Freud, I don't see the point of it. Artists are interested in oil painting, not in computerized illustration.

Sad about flake white, if what you say is true. It does have it's own special properties that Freud really new how to exploit. Surely, artists have a wide range of concerns, such as making modest digital videos.
