For example, in the first episode, they could’ve introduced the girls and showed the audience that they have a club. For reading or sports or poetry. Then the next episode a mysterious package is delivered to one of the club members house. Inside is a keychain and a pair of shoes that belongs to one of the girls in the club and a letter says ‘Come and Find her while you still can’. So the main three say that they will find the missing classmate and will do whatever it takes. Then guns happen because they don’t wanna be messed with haha
You are a treasure. There's tons of low effort anime like this that never got off the ground for one reason or another. If you want an example of an anime with a girl main character that would have went somewhere if it got popular, look up "Cosmos Pink Shock".
4:43 Hold up, this steering wheel is on the left. That leaves Europe and America/Canada, and holy shit I've already done more detective work than the entire OVA.
70s is the best anime decade IMO. It had many of the best directors in their prime, many genres which being developed and setting the groundwork for the following few decades, and some of the most legendary series of all time were being created. You've got Lupin the Third, Future Boy Conan, Takarajima, Ace o Nerae, Ashita no Joe, The Rose of Versailles, Ie Naki Ko, Heidi, Anne of Green Gables, Mobile Suit Gundam and Space Battleship Yamato as just examples of what the decade had to offer. 80s was a fun time for anime but most of the interesting stuff was in movies and OVAs, which were often interesting experiments, some that hit a bulleye and are still remembered as beloved classics, and then you have... stuff like this. XD
@kenny lauderdale Theres the World Masterpiece Theater shows by Takahata, the Tomoharu Katsumata Go Nagai adaptations, the early Tomino and Yasuhiko collaborations, the Leijiverse shows and the Tatsunoko stuff. I'd say that theres a fair amount to offer for those interested in 70s shows. 80s TV anime has some neat stuff, but the really weird movies and OVAs that were only possible with bubble economy money are what people remember from the 80s.
"You know if I gave you a VHS tape with the words "Girl Detective Club" on it, what do you think that anime would be about?" Kenny, I think at that point I'd be calling the police.
Small correction: The artist's name is Yu Eguchi and I'm fairly sure they might be a woman, considering most of their later works seem to be BL doujinshi. I'm always fascinated by how obscure some of the source material for these OVAs is. Apparently this manga never even was reprinted as a tankobon! Really makes you wonder what went through the producer's heads. For a similarly obscure OVA you might want to check out "Cosmos Pink Shock" - that one's at least pretty entertaining!
the worst part about 80ies and early 90ies moe / cute girl animes is that unlike later animes, the art is garbage. Just pause this video at any time and look at their deformed head shapes, even for anime girls. While plot and characters are often no better in this kind of anime made after 2010, at least the art normally has some kind of minimum quality base that looks decent rather just just straight up ugly. This is supposed to be eye candy cute girls doing cute stuff, how did they fail to make girls look presentable, let alone cute?
The croco imitator is the theme song of this crappy ova by Tarako, who did a better song in the original theme to Noozles, a cult classic by the studio behind Maruko chan, Heidi and Jungle Book.
You could make a decent anime with Tony the Tiger. It could be an anime take on the typical sports movie plot. Make it about a sports teams that isn’t doing very well and everyone makes fun of. Then have Tony the Tiger come in, and inspire the team to victory. Then have the final episode end with the team winning against a team that was previously unbeaten
I didn't count but it seemed like half the episodes of BBC's Sherlock had about as much detective work as this has. They got really far away from the mystery solving on that one in the later seasons.
4:30 made me freeze-frame just to laugh xD I know pausing animations and viewing them the same way you would a solitary drawing is unfair, but admit it, that looks straight out of an early 2000's "How to draw manga" book
Midori is an exceptionally common female name, and it can be written in many different ways with various characters (I gave up after five pages at my favorite dictionary site). Most of them do not refer to the color at all.
I looked up the credits and did see one name I recognized... Masako Goto, the character designer, was an animation director on Ranma 1/2 and also worked on Kimagure Orange Road.
I'M GLAD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT THIS. LOL Now that's a mystery that needs solving... why do a bunch of girls in a detective club have crocodile rock sampled in their song.
After years of waching classic and modern anime, I can conclude that NO the 80s anime are not all of the hype. There were just a many bad to good as there are now. We in the states were bombarded with so much Aikras and MD Giests that we didn't know that Japan had a lot more One Piece's and such airing at the same time.
I checked some J/E dictionaries and they list tanteidan 「探偵団」 as having a secondary meaning of "study group" in addition to the more usual "detective team". Tantei is usually translated as detective, but the two characters indivdually translate as "search" and "spy", and the combo more accurately means "investigator".
The colors just look so painfully muted and orange. o_o With all the bullets whizzing past them on a regular basis, I'm surprised not one of them hits.
Do you think the title (of the originating series) is a reference to Akechi Kogoro's *Boy Detectives Club*? It was inspired by Sherlock Holmes' Baker Street Irregulars, and whilst knowing nothing more about it I'm sure it deserved a better homage than this.
I'll stick with the theory that this was a test for the studio to get better at what they do, considering their standing today. Kinda like a pilot episode or OVA to see where it will take the creators or the material into the future. Side note, keep up the awesome work, Kenny. Loving the videos so far.
Thanks. This ran a little short than normal but there's just not much to say about it. at the very least I'm the only person on youtube who's talked about it, so in a way it's the best girl detective club video on the entire site!
The first thing I thought upon seeing this OVA was: "baby's first Project A-KO." Very mediocre, and that's too bad, I'd like a Girl Detective Club. Oh well, I guess not every 80's OVA can be Dragon's Heaven... or Outlanders... Also, I'm sorry you're not watching Outlanders right now too. You can borrow my LD if you want.
@@kennylauderdale_en Yeah, it usually averages around $45, but there's currently one on eBay for $75, I think. Crazy... Unfortunately, it's been out of print for over a decade, so that means eBay inflation time. But the best looking version is still the Laserdisc, as the DVD suffered from a rather heavy handed application of DVNR. Also, they re-dubbed it. The original dub done by Dark Image, was a lot more fun in that wacky, early 90's dub way. But that doesn't matter, because it's all about the Japanese voice cast anyway. *cough* Fumi Hirano *cough*
Man, it’s actually crazy, I started to think of Outlander as I was watching this couldn’t remember the name, and out of nowhere you mentioned it. That was such a great anime.
This reaction seems kinda overblown for a 24 minute show. It's probably not easy to cover a detective story in such a short span so they opted to do something else is my guess.

What the HECK, Kenny.
This isn't Gunsmith Cats at all!!
waiting for the bluray.
Love your voice, its really calming and the fact that you dont scream about how much you hate something is higly appreciated!
"Two girls running away from explosions and occasionally hugging" actually sounds like something I'd enjoy, you're probably overselling this show, Ken.
When I heard you talking about "Mascot Anime" my mind immediately went to the anime "Di Gi Charat" . A shame it wasn't anything like that.
I was thinking milky holmes
"You know if I gave you a VHS tape with the words "Girl Detective Club" on it, what do you think that anime would be about?"
Kenny, I think at that point I'd be calling the police.
I've had my eye on that for awhile. Press F for the VHD format.
"Tell them to go fly a kite." That's my favorite line.
the worst part about 80ies and early 90ies moe / cute girl animes is that unlike later animes, the art is garbage.
2:45 So basically the 80s equivalent of Super Sonico?
3:27 i'm sorry....is that Crocodile Rock?
It is & it's horrible.
The croco imitator is the theme song of this crappy ova by Tarako, who did a better song in the original theme to Noozles, a cult classic by the studio behind Maruko chan, Heidi and Jungle Book.
There needs to be a streaming service just for 80s anime, with a special "only on VHS or LD" section.
More detective work went into the research of this video than this entire anime series.
After cringing through a couple episodes of Redo of Healer, I'm having a hard time believing this is the worst kind of anime.
Stamp collecting has more enjoyable moments than this anime
Man, I'm loving this Saberspark anime spinoff
TheMindMaster6 same
2:43 - You say that like its a bad thing. I'd watch the shit out of a Tony the Tiger OVA,
Midori? Wait... that's literally just the Japanese word for "Green". *Her name is literally **_GREEN._*
I mean people in real life are named after colours too
Midori is an exceptionally common female name, and it can be written in many different ways with various characters (I gave up after five pages at my favorite dictionary site). Most of them do not refer to the color at all.
Never stop uploading Kenny.
Why can't we all be mature and accept that all eras of anime has trash anime?
Oh right, it's the anime fanbase why did I expect such a thing ...
I think this is a series that could benefit 3000 percent from becoming an abridged series.
I’m a simple man, I see Kenny, I click.
Good man.
I looked up the credits and did see one name I recognized... Masako Goto, the character designer, was an animation director on Ranma 1/2 and also worked on Kimagure Orange Road.
Why does the song in the background remind me of Crocodile Rock?
because the music in this anime is terrible & that was lineally the only song I could find for it. The rest of the music was from Sukeban Deka.
@@kennylauderdale_en what's the song that starts at 8:00?
@@kennylauderdale_en but crocodile rock is good...
I'M GLAD I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT THIS. LOL Now that's a mystery that needs solving... why do a bunch of girls in a detective club have crocodile rock sampled in their song.
Yeah it sounds like anime girls singing Crocodile Rock!
【SWEET POTATOES INTENSIFIES】
I checked some J/E dictionaries and they list tanteidan 「探偵団」 as having a secondary meaning of "study group" in addition to the more usual "detective team". Tantei is usually translated as detective, but the two characters indivdually translate as "search" and "spy", and the combo more accurately means "investigator".
How is two people a study group? Should have just called it "Girl"
The colors just look so painfully muted and orange. o_o
With all the bullets whizzing past them on a regular basis, I'm surprised not one of them hits.
Do you think the title (of the originating series) is a reference to Akechi Kogoro's *Boy Detectives Club*? It was inspired by Sherlock Holmes' Baker Street Irregulars, and whilst knowing nothing more about it I'm sure it deserved a better homage than this.
Sounds like my kind of trash, thanks for telling me about it, time to go watch it.
Although girl detective club was bad, I really did enjoy the commentary. Also, commando Izumi and the Lensman brought me here :P Instant sub :D
That monster at 6:24 looks like Pikachu
There's nothing new under the sun, everything comes from somewhere whether you notice it or not.
I was thinking that. 10 whole years before Pokemon came out too!
Black Phoenix the monster at the front glance is someone in a bunny costume!
The Pikachu now looks better.
The first thing I thought upon seeing this OVA was: "baby's first Project A-KO."
Very mediocre, and that's too bad, I'd like a Girl Detective Club.
Oh well, I guess not every 80's OVA can be Dragon's Heaven... or Outlanders...
Also, I'm sorry you're not watching Outlanders right now too. You can borrow my LD if you want.
The DVD for outlanders is really expensive isn't it?
I just LOVE to hear your rants. Such a short video, though.
If you want a schoolboy anime go watch Clamp Academy >>
I gotta say the consistent community updates keep you in my head even without the bell.
"Oh hey a videos coming out tomorrow"
Neat
Also
Thanks man, I hope I'm not being too negative with this one but it's just so generic.
This looks awesome, can't wait to watch it! Thanks for the recommendation!
but I said it was boring & I didn't like it! Why would you watch it?
Man, it’s actually crazy, I started to think of Outlander as I was watching this couldn’t remember the name, and out of nowhere you mentioned it. That was such a great anime.
This reaction seems kinda overblown for a 24 minute show. It's probably not easy to cover a detective story in such a short span so they opted to do something else is my guess.
1:00 “...and if they DO do any detective work in their series it all happens in the manga instead, because there is no actual detective work in this MANGA”
For a moment, I thought my brain broke.
1:10 I believe you meant to say anime?
I caught it & I still didn't care. Just pretend I was calling it manga because the anime doesn't look very good.
@@kennylauderdale_en haha, great video none the less!
@@kennylauderdale_en there's no creepy pedo fanservice, is it?
@@KhayJayArt looks like there is mate...
Finding this channel just made my day. I will now be a follower, as well as a regular. 👍
6:53 Because as you know, only sith deal in absolutes.
Can't believe I confused this with Debutante Detective Corps when you announced you we're going to talk about this. Then again I'm shocked this premise got used twice in two different anime ova's nearly ten years apart from each other.
If someone didn't already do a video on Debutante Detective Corps I might have done one already. Most of it would be me laughing at the engrish in the character cards though.
@@kennylauderdale_en I know Bennett the sage did a review of it awhile ago so its sadly still fresh in my mind
Didn't he quit recently? I heard he wanted to "stop doing play by plays spoiling the story" of the anime he reviewed.
But hey, atleast it isn't... you know... *the N name*
I'm not talking about the N word btw
Daniel Ayy I’m gonna say the N name
@@FreedomHero4 shhhhh, not while Kenny sama is listening
Okay but honestly what is the N-Name tho lol
@@Thewritingelf Nora
Yeah anything's better than Naruto
the saddest part of this is that I've lost 8:48 of my life watching the review of something not recommended even for a laugh, didn't have to watch the whole anime to feel the emptiness in my soul
Finally someone I can relate with.
The OP to this anime almost sounds like the Crocodile Rock by Elton John.
Oh my god, that's exactly it! I couldn't place it. It was driving me crazy!
One thing that's really annoying me is that Google has disabled the search by date feature on Google search. Its not possible to search for a website that came out in a specific timeframe anymore
I watched it anyway, those were the longest 25 min. of my life.
6:43
This sounds like something Comic Book Guy would say, and that's comedy gold. I love your deadpan delivery.
80's clickbait
Thank you Kenny! I'm one of those new 10K subs. RUclips is just weird like that. The new algorithim heavily showed your Twinkle Nora Rock Me videos in my feed. Then I checked out your previous vids and so far you're videos are interesting and entertaining to watch. I wish you all the best.
Just another chapter in Japan's anime-fueled psychological war with the west
I love how you started this video. Never fails to make me giggle.
