Fantastic interview! I could listen to these two legends talk about music and life for hours. I was lucky enough to have a chance to interview Soken-san and Uematsu-san directly in the past and those conversations already blew my mind, but seeing an interview with them two together is a whole other level of awesome. Especially as a composer. Thank you for making this!
Ugh...Uematsu is 63! i was born in 85 and been inspired by his music since the early 90s with FF4. I would not be a musician without him, period. I am going to be devastated when his time comes. please live another 20-30 years!!!!
I feel for Uematsu-san when he says he doesn't like to listen to his older compositions in their original from. It's like looking back on artwork you drew when you were younger and ask yourself why did I do that? Other people love and appreciate it though and that is what matters. We are often our most tough critics. Keep on rocking on dude. Yourself and Soken-san have given me hours of musical enjoyment over the years. :)
All great artists view their old work with distain because they always look forward and never backwards, they consider their old work a past accomplishment which is to be acknowledged at best and inferior to their current vision at worst.
It's fascinating to listen to Uematsu-sensei talk about feeling embarrassed over his older works because I'm playing the original Final Fantasy for the first time right now (after having played many of the other games in the series that he worked on) and I'm really taken with how charming and well done the music is
This was extremely interesting and inspirational...and surprisingly relatable! Sometimes, you kind of forget that even the legends are just regular people, being critical of their own work.
Hearing that Uematsu, like so many artists I know in my life, can't look back on his old work without cringing made me smile. It's just a universal truth when it comes to art, regardless of the medium. No one likes to look back at their old stuff, even when the people around us tell us it's wonderful.
I'm currently experiencing hard days of my life that I even had to stop playing my favourite game, FFXIV because of it. But this video makes me feel better. Seeing two music legends come together and just having a great time, makes everything great again.
While Nobuo Uematsu is certainly recognized in the video game world, I personaly feel he's not recognized enough, given the results his work has achieved. Looking back at the FF games he's done - especially 6, 7, 8, 9 & and part of 10 - they were absolutely ground braking and industry-changing products, so significantly narrated by the music, particularly. Obviously they told some great stories, with loveable characters, deep gameplay mechanics and cutting edge graphics, but Nobuo Uematsu's music was the thing that gave them the soul. This unique characteristic that so many fell in love with, and cherish to this day. The newer FFs are still good games with some great musical pieces - but as a whole they clearly struggle greatly to be as influential as the older titles (not meaning sales, but the overall impact). When talking about the greatest video game creations in history I think "Final Fantasy", and when I think "Final Fantasy" Nobuo Uematsu is the first thing that comes to mind, undoubtedly. And I'm so grateful for all the music and emotions! Long live Master Uematsu ✌🏻🖤
While I agree in your praise he's basically regarded as the John Williams of video game music. I don't think he's underappreciated, he's probably the most celebrated video game composer of all time
Final Fantasy 14 as a whole probably has (imo) one of the best FF OSTs ever and I think Final Fantasy 16s OST will have a big impact given that Soken will be the composer for this mainline FF title
@@akiinmoonlight79 eyes on me (ff8)won Japan's 14th gold disk award for western music, it also charted in top 9 for a time as well. the only other vg song I know of to do so was Hikari from kh, he does have recognition outside the vg sphere
While I agree that recent iterations of FF haven't been as "impactful" I think in part that gaming landscape has changed so much as a whole, and also the wide breadth of games available just really make it hard for any single game to really stand out and "define" a genre or generation. There are some in recent memory like Breath of the Wild or even No Man's Sky's revival, and a handful of others, but of course even "generation defining" is anectdotal I feel. Also FF 14, like No Man's Sky, managed to save itself and become a really ground breaking MMO game of its own right, still going on, finished one complete storyline and on to another, and still operates as a monthly subscription based MMO which has all but pretty much died except for WoW. Lastly, I think that as people who grew up with the NES era and up of FF games, the new ones will always be compared to older ones, the impact we felt playing them, and that they had on us, and I honestly think that no matter what, it's never coming back. I love many new games, but I alwas go back and repla old games. There's a nostalgia and bias to older games I played that just isn't replicated, but I feel for children growing up with games this generation, they will have those experiences and they will be defining to them, and I don't think it is even "wrong" to assert such an opinion as well. We probably will see articles heralding FF 11 and beyond in ways we didn't think so, and it will be no less accurate to say that some people felt the same way we did playing those early FF games as they do with recent iterations.
The bit about Uematsu making the modulation album for himself is super important, I think and really neat that we get to experience it. Think about all the "personal projects" other artists never release publicly. I hope more people take note that it's never too late.
Nobuo san: I am embarassed to listen to the old tracks I made. Soken san as a FF fanboy: Excuse me?! thank you for this. this is a fun and interesting talk between two legends!
Only recently discovered Soken by playing the FFXVI demo and I couldn’t get over how well he blended familiar melodies from previous Final Fantasy’s. It really makes you feel like Uematsu is still in the seat, spearheading the music. Soken is the perfect successor to Uematsu! (Also have to say that Uematsu is my favourite composer/songwriter of all time and we share the same birthday!)
Even if you're not someone that's interested in playing FF14, I'd recommend looking up his work on that game, too. There are quite a few FF14 music videos here on RUclips that are amazing.
It's worth noting that Masashi Hamauzu, Naoshi Mizuta, and Takeharu Ishimoto are also genuinely very talented as well! Hamauzu worked on the X soundtrack with Uematsu long before doing XIII and VII Remake, as well as a few SaGa games... *And* he was bass singer for original FFVII's One-Winged Angel choir! Ishimoto's work on Crisis Core and Type-0 is excellent, and Mizuta's work on FFXI Online and Stranger of Paradise is too! Then there's Mitsuto Suzuki's *excellent* Mobius soundtrack...
Breaks my heart seeing Soken looking like he does here after all that cancer treatment, and yet I can admire him for staying strong through it all. He and Uematsu-san are true legends!
2 people that shape my love for video game music genre. I manage to meet Nobuo san and shake his hand and said thank you for your music. That was the highlight of my life. Now for Soken!
Two legends in the same room... Ah, I've been blessed ^^ But can I just say that every time I see his name, I can only think: "Masayoshi Soken is such a cool name, damnit!"
I hope these legends are aware from time to time, of how many hearts they have touched in such a beautiful way with their divine compositions. I cannot thank them enough for making the life choices they made and creating this legacy for us.
For me, the Final Fantasy series is what elevated video games from a fun little pastime to taking it more seriously. Uematsu played a very vital role in that.
Seeing this two together makes me imagine a jam with the Black Mages and Primals! I'm not one of those people that usually bothers to play other music while playing any Final Fantasy, so I feel a lot of love for both composers after growing into all their looping tracks and watching their bands perform. The way Soken uses Eternal wind in the Shadowbringers theme absolutely feels like he made a gift to an altar. You don't even have to imagine it. The Crystal Tower is right there in the cinematic when it plays. The sky around it is saturated with literal holy elemental light in HD. That's how good it sounds to me, every time I hear that part, I can feel my pulse picking up.
When I was a child, I spent years leveling around Cornelia since I didn't know how to progress an RPG on Nintendo, let alone know what an RPG was. It was then that I grew in love with Uematsu's music and came to appreciate how each musical piece was the voice of a character, a town, or the game itself. I remember not liking FFX much because of the voice overs and fell out of love for Final Fantasy and would not discover that love again later until the later years of FFXIV through Soken. After that I gave myself time to go back to the other games and isolate Uematsu's score through out the other FF games and have come to enjoy them as they are. Seeing them both here was a great treat. Thank you for bringing these two together to give us, the fans, a little insight into their minds.
I love the raw quality of Uematsu-san's early NES tracks. It's like the first album of your favorite band as they wail in their garage with cheap instruments and endless passion. I actually think he shouldn't revisit his old work though. It's hard putting yourself in the creative shoes of your earlier self. That's what makes Soken's adaptations so amazing. He loves those songs and can add his own endless passion.
Nobuo Uematsu is the reason why i start paying attention to game music back in ps1 era, i was 7 years old back then, its an magical once in a lifetime experience
Mmm... Yeah... Everything really does work with prog rock... Delightful to see these two together - Taking a pause to go back and listen to different arrangements of Eternal Wind and you really can hear exactly what soken means about delivering it up to the altar
Thank you so much for letting us hear this talk!! I've gone out of my way to learn more about music so I can better appreciate some of the intricacies of both of their pieces, and I've even gone back and listened to a lot of that 70s prog rock and been delighted at hearing where some of my favourite songs had come from. I'm a XIV player but I'm also one of the few North Americans who played 2 and 3 on the famicom-- I had the chance in high school back in the late 90s, so I can say that at least one XIV player loves that old famicom sound! I still smile when I hear a lot of those original songs. I also love the talk about the records-- I think it's really fascinating. I've never been super into the notion of LPs because I don't have any personal memories of records and I don't really believe they sound somehow 'better' just by being a record, but talking about how just the process of listening to music on vinyl changes your attitude towards the music really makes me understand better about them. I can't wait to hear them all!!
This was amazing talk on how the pieces of music was created. Watched the whole thing down to every second and listening to the details. Thank you Uematsu-san for making such beautiful music for Final Fantasy. Masayoshi Soken also made some extremely awesome music for FF 14 and the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI. The trailer pieces had such uplifting beats. Im looking forward to listening to the soundtrack when this game comes out in June! Thank you to both Legends!
Soken is brilliant, bold, creative. He can be subtle and incisive. But to me I think Uematsu just has that spark of mad genius that comes out in the best of his works that can't be beat. Either way I am loving the FF16 OST and I enjoyed FF14 music a lot too. Absolutely worthy successor.
I didn't ever play III since it wasn't originally released in the U.S. and I had trouble getting the translation file working for my ROM, but Eternal Wind is one of my new favorite pieces because of XIV.
Growing up, Uematsu was a huge influence to my appreciation of music. He is absolute God tier and I guarantee I am not alone on that, including by those in the gaming industry. I'd argue the majority of composers in gaming music or chip tunes look to him as a major inspiration. I firmly believe there is no way to accurately measure how big of an impact Uematsu has had on gaming and possibly music in general. He is, on almost every level, on level with Shigeru Miyamoto for how important their contributions have been to the medium.
I loved Uematsu’s music way before I knew he was the one making it. 1999 - an 8 year old me - playing FF8 - all I remember is the music…and Squalls gunblade! ;)
hey, i hope somebody can find this maybe. when i was a young child my parents got the ps1 for us. i was born 1990. although 7 very loved, 8 always stuck the most with me. the music, the characters. it was very much relatable. back then it was cool to be the hero, and gain better. ive grown to have an obsession with the music that has been created in the final fantasy universe. back when we were young early 2000s, my cousin had the newest things always. he had the ps2, and the new final fantasy 10. my memories were blurred, but ive really remembered so much of the game, just from watching my cousin play. when i replayed the game myself last year after 20 years, the nostalgia kicked me immediately. i regularly go into youtube to find old classic soundtracks like that. listening to them during the night to give me back that feeling it once gave me.
Hello friend, I have a public FF playlist on my channel which has my favourite FF X songs. I hope you find what you're looking for, but ones that come to mind are: 浄罪の路 (Path of Repentance) Besaid Island Macalania Forest Calm before the Storm A Fleeting Dream Hopeless Desire
I could listen to them talk for hours without end. Both Uematsu-san and Soken-san's works had a huge impact on me while I was growing up, I've lost track how many years it has been at this point that I've spent listening to their music. All of these games also had such a important role to play in my life too so I'm super happy and thankful to see these types of interviews/conversations :D it's super enlightening, not to mention how kind they both are!! The video was a treat, thank you for sharing!!
My actual dream is to hear a featuring with Masayoshi Soken and Hiroyuki Sawano. I'm sure it will create the perfect atmosphere for a fight ! I hope it could become reality in a near future !
Fantastic interview!

One day both these legends will do a collab and it will break the industry
I can't wait! Really looking forward to this new album, Modulation. Please just give me an early copy!
20:10 30年以上前に何かの付録で、FF1の町の曲が入ったレコード(多分7インチ)があった気がするけどあれはノーカウントか。
もしかしたらめっちゃお宝だったか・・・
Two gods just having a chat - 🔥
Growing up, Uematsu was a huge influence to my appreciation of music. He is absolute God tier and I guarantee I am not alone on that, including by those in the gaming industry. I'd argue the majority of composers in gaming music or chip tunes look to him as a major inspiration. I firmly believe there is no way to accurately measure how big of an impact Uematsu has had on gaming and possibly music in general. He is, on almost every level, on level with Shigeru Miyamoto for how important their contributions have been to the medium.
I'm glad that they included samples of the music. The Main Theme and Eternal Wind arrangements sound really good. I'm looking forward to it.
I loved Uematsu’s music way before I knew he was the one making it.
1999 - an 8 year old me - playing FF8 - all I remember is the music…and Squalls gunblade! ;)
若気の至りを忘れない事。後進の育成にこれは必須だと思う。意外と忘れている人が多いし、そのせいで高圧的になっていく。
Nobou is a LEGEND the world doesn't deserve
hey, i hope somebody can find this maybe. when i was a young child my parents got the ps1 for us.
i was born 1990. although 7 very loved, 8 always stuck the most with me. the music, the characters.
it was very much relatable. back then it was cool to be the hero, and gain better. ive grown to have
an obsession with the music that has been created in the final fantasy universe. back when we were
young early 2000s, my cousin had the newest things always. he had the ps2, and the new final fantasy
10. my memories were blurred, but ive really remembered so much of the game, just from watching
my cousin play. when i replayed the game myself last year after 20 years, the nostalgia kicked me
immediately. i regularly go into youtube to find old classic soundtracks like that. listening to them
during the night to give me back that feeling it once gave me.
Hello friend,
I have a public FF playlist on my channel which has my favourite FF X songs.
I hope you find what you're looking for, but ones that come to mind are:

Besaid Island
Macalania Forest
Calm before the Storm
A Fleeting Dream
Hopeless Desire

Thanks both for your incredible music 💖💖💖
I could listen to them talk for hours without end. Both Uematsu-san and Soken-san's works had a huge impact on me while I was growing up, I've lost track how many years it has been at this point that I've spent listening to their music. All of these games also had such a important role to play in my life too so I'm super happy and thankful to see these types of interviews/conversations :D it's super enlightening, not to mention how kind they both are!! The video was a treat, thank you for sharing!!
コンプライアンスに引っかかる会話が好きだったんだけれどねぇ
My actual dream is to hear a featuring with Masayoshi Soken and Hiroyuki Sawano. I'm sure it will create the perfect atmosphere for a fight ! I hope it could become reality in a near future !
2 legends, 1 game series. It would be really cool if Uematsu would interview Soken too at some point :D
