We begin outside the Acropolis Museum Athens Greece. Even if you don't go inside, the building is a masterpiece, blending modern architecture with ancient history. I often say if the Acropolis is the crown of Athens, this museum is its jewel box.
Next, we stroll down one of the quaint streets leading into Plaka. It's like stepping into a postcard - charming houses, vibrant bougainvillaea, and the sweet aroma of Greek coffee wafting through the air.
We then make a quick stop at the Ioannis Makriyannis Statue. This unsung hero of the Greek War of Independence deserves a nod. Plus, it's an excellent spot for a quirky selfie.
Now, behold the Arch of Hadrian, also known as Hadrian's Gate. This monumental gateway almost whispers tales of ancient processions that once passed under its arches. Stand beneath it and feel like a Roman emperor - minus the laurel wreath, of course.
A short walk away is the Statue of Alexander the Great. Pose next to one of history's greatest conquerors, and nearby, you'll find the contemplative Statue of Lord Byron, honouring the British poet.
Then, we sneak a peek at the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Its colossal columns are all that remain, standing proudly as a reminder of the temple's past glory.
Up next is the serene Zappeion Garden. Take a breather here and enjoy the lush greenery. The Zappeion Building within the garden is a stunner.
Strolling through the Athens National Garden is like stepping into a green oasis. Birds chirping, trees whispering, and a sense of calm amidst the city buzz - it's nature's own stress reliever.
Then were off to the Hellenic Parliament to see the Evzones. These guards in their traditional skirts are a sight to behold. Their solemn march is a unique blend of ceremony and tradition.
Next, we arrive at bustling Syntagma Square. It's the heart of Athens, pulsating with life and energy.
A walk down Ermou Street is a must for window shoppers and people watchers. This buzzing thoroughfare combines modern Athens with a hint of traditional charm.
Don't miss the Church of Panagia Kapnikarea, one of the oldest churches in Athens and a beautiful example of a Greek Orthodox Church.
Feeling peckish? Thanasis Restaurant is where you can grab possibly the best Souvlaki and Gyros in Athens. It's not technically free, but your taste buds will thank you.
As we near the end of our tour, Monastiraki Square awaits. This lively square epitomises Athens' vibrant spirit, where history, culture, and modernity collide.
Finally, we conclude at Hadrian's Library. Once a hub of learning and philosophy, it is now a poignant reminder of Athens' rich intellectual past.
This Athens travel guide only scratches the surface of what this incredible city offers. Every step in Athens tells a story, from its historical wonders to its lively streets. Thanks for joining me on this Athens walking adventure.
