  • A retrospective video essay personal love letter analysis thing to one of my favorite franchises. Be amazed as a grown man gets overly emotional about a series of decade-old games and shows.
Also a very, very big thank you to the Dot Hack community Discord for helping me research this video. I couldn't have gotten a lot of the background info for the series.

Yo, few things I didn't get to address in the actual video but wanted to mention:
    - A very big thank you to the people in the Dot Hack community who helped me research this. They were super nice and helpful and very welcoming.
    - Basically all of the franchise's music is fantastic. I used it throughout this video but highly recommended listening.
    - Alkaid is the absolute best. Fite me
That's all. Hope you guys enjoy!

Just want to say thank you for this video. Hits all the spots for a long ongoing fan of the franchise, that started feeling empty when it just faded away! Got Last Recode and it was exactly like I remembered it and more, took my time and platinumed it! This video was a pleasure to watch.

Thank you! It was the same for me. This ended up becoming a lot more of a personal vid than I was expecting, but it was really interesting researching the franchise and seeing how everything got to this point.

This video hit me hard especially when “You Smile Kindly” played at the end. I admittedly gasped and got teary eyed when they announced .Hack remaster. I also like how you ended the video. It is nice we received this closure for GU, and there’s a small part of me wanting more but, I’ll also enjoy what I have.

I think we are getting another game soon with cyberconnect2 teasing a secret game based on a established IP

I found this channel through a Monogatari binge yesterday, and today I find you have a video on my all-time favorite series. Suffice to say I'm subbed now.

The series kind of peaked at G.U. and the stuff beyond that in series 3 is hit or miss.
Link was a really bad game which had the weird concept of retelling all the stories of the .hack series, like all 20 or so sub series up to that point, but it did it very poorly and it is excruciatingly boring to play.
Quantum is a good OVA that would have benefited from being a 12 episode Anime instead. The animation was really good compared to the other Anime, but the pacing was too fast and the plot kind of suffers because of this.
The Movie or Beyond the World is actually a very good movie with amazing animation and pacing. It does kind of follow the tropes of the series, but as a standalone entry it is one of the better entries in the series. It's a shame it never got localized outside of Japan.
Versus is a cool fighting game based off the series, but due to its inclusion with the movie, on the same disc it had a roster of only 8 characters 3 of which where the Kite clones of the series. I would love to see them revisit this and flesh it out more, especially since CC2 is known for their fighting games these days.
Thanatos Report is a secret video you get for beating Versus, and it is a cluster****. It takes place right after the movie and basically flips the table like a bad fanfiction would do. Heck it doesn't even feel consistent with the movie which is on the same disc, like two completely different authors had the reigns of the series at this point. The major plot twist that is revealed in this video is that environmental terrorists, which I think were called Mama, were the real villains of the series all along, and Emma Wielant the author of the Epitaph of Twilight was a member of said organization. It ends on a pretty sour cliffhanger as well, and thus the series ends without a definite conclusion. Though if you completely ignore this video and the outlandish writing that kind of plagues series 3 as a whole the movie is a good conclusion to the series.
Guilty Dragon and New World are now defunct mobile games and were pretty junk from what I've seen. They have good music though. They also apparently did pretty well in Japan from the bits of news I heard over the years they were active.
As for the future of the series. If they continue it I think they would jump off from where G.U. left off instead of going from where series 3 left off at this point. As for right now I just want a remaster of the first four games and I have some vague hope that the movie to be localized at some point, even if it is just subbed.

I still just feel anime went rampant with mmorpg isekai causing .hack to lose it's uniqueness

Sadly, you're probably right. .hack's still unique because it places a lot of emphasis on other things Isekai don't, but nowadays the premise is pretty common
