hey potters. in this episode we talk about how I, personally, recycle my clay. I don't have anything super fancy. I basically just stick it in a bucket. mix it, and let it dry on a surface.
here is a video I found with Tom Kemp making his own plaster wedging table if you need it.

Mixing different cones is bad for another reason: their eutectic point.
As my chemical-engineer husband told me: when you mix any two things together, the melting point of that mix isn't just the halfway point between the melting points of the 2 separate things. The mixture's melting point depends on the proportions of the two things you've mixed together.
Which makes sense: if you've mixed in a smidgen of phebotnium into your slopite, the melting point of the mix is basically the melting point of slopite. And vice versa: phebotnium with a teeny bit of slopite mixed in has a melting point almost equal to the melting point of phebotnium.
Now you might think that the melting point of the mix of this hypothetical slopite with the hypothetical phebotnium is just a straight line between the melting points of slopite and phebotnium, but that's not usually the case. Instead of a straight line it could be a curve.
And that curve could actually dip down _below_ both melting points! Sometimes, quite a bit below. The point on that curve with the lowest melting temperature is the *eutectic point*.
So 3/4 slopite with 1/4 phebotnium could have a melting point _below_ the melting point of slopite. Let's say 95% of the melting temperature of slopite. And it keeps decreasing until you reach 5/9 slopite with 4/9 phebotnium - the eutectic point - with a melting point below half the melting point of either slopite or phebotnium!
What's more: two substances with the same melting temperature could have a eutectic point, i.e. a lower melting temperature when mixed.
Now my example is intentionally dramatic. But the overall point is: if you mix cone-10 stoneware with cone-6 stoneware, you don't get a cone-8 clay, but could end up with a _cone-4½ clay_.

When I old school recycle clay, I use a piece of fine weave cloth to pour the clay on when drying. It makes flipping easy. A hand injury prevents wedging clay properly so invested in a peter pugger 2 years ago and let it do the work. No longer buy bagged clay but mix my own. Recycled clay and water go directly into the pug mill. The pugmill has changed how I throw because I know I can make more clay and not defined by having to buy another bag of ready mix.

I work out of a maker space in Nevada County. I do a similar process. I recently had surgery on my right hand because of advanced OA. I use plaster as well, but I skip the whisking step. All clay trimmings get tossed into buckets and submerged in water. It sits until it breaks down, usually a full 5 gallon bucket. The clay settles so excess water can be just poured out. Onto the plaster (just slop with stiff spots) cover with plastic and let it sit over night. Come back the next day and start by Slap Wedging it. I take about 8 pounds or so and start by cutting it in half and slapping both sides down on the plaster, one over the other, on my wedging table. Repeating this process to get a homogenous blend, then spiral wedge it and voila, over to the wheel I go with just about 20 pounds of after just a few minutes of wedging. 😊

For our high school studio, we had built a frame on an old wooden table and then made a table-sized plaster mold on it. Rather than using a bucket, we had garbage cans for each clay type and we got a large wooden pole with a nob at the end which is used for churning butter. Same process as yours just on a much larger scale. We also had the luxury of a pugmill to make it nicer to use. Students waste a lot of clay but we are yet to have a piece explode from the plaster.

I think, when you recicle your clay, you don't just save money, but also save natural resources, because some clay deposits actually can end... of course, usually it takes time, and the big industrieas are the main responsibles for that, but, you know, we can do our part not contributing for that.
Besides, I ask myself, what do people do with the clay, when they don't reclicle it, like, for real. I don't know if in the EUA is different, but here in Brasil, generally the only option is to throw it in the garden...
And about mixing clays, I get the impression that, when I do that, the clay that results is actually better, cause has the qualitys of multiple clays ... but then, I let it sit for a while in the bucket, before drying it, so the particles of them can integrate better (but maybe it's just a thing of my head)
Ah, thanks for the whisk tip! I used to do it with by hands and then sieve (lots of patient required) or ask for a friend's drill

D, correct me if I’m wrong here: besides savings and avoiding being wasteful slobs, one more reason to reuse your clay is added plasticity. Is that true? Some very stubborn clays (not the de-aired pristine kind) have a chance to rot further in the bucket and rot (aka microorganisms that swim gloriously in the muck) combined with consistent wedging foreplay and lovin’, lends your old friend a suppleness and a personality that you simply can’t get out of a uniform block of, say, Laguna clay in a box. I take clay powder and add some water to be able to make a workable ball of clay, but the whole thing just turns to stodge/slop and then it takes days/weeks to dry out again, it is so demoralising because all I ever seem to do is fight with the clay consistency rather than actually do what a potter is meant to do... make pots. Glad you're recycling there Harry Potter. But why are you purchasing clay and hand mixing?😊
I make about 500 lbs. of clay in 5, 10, 25 and 50 lb. blocks in just a couple of days.
There's about a 97% chance that you have good clay right in your back yard.
I find that a post hole digger comes in very, very handy to mix your clay very quickly.
You can also use an electric/hand cranked meat grinder that works as a pug mill.

You're kinda delicately avoiding the problem of stinky clay water and stinky recycled clay. The clay is quite nice to work with, but, oh boy does it ever make the eyes water. It's a rotten egg, sulphur smell.
