That is awesome. Just wanted to say thank you for all the vids, learned alot. I am a body guy so i know how to make them pretty but i am not a mechanic, thats where you came in. Your a great teacher. Wherever life leads you RIDE HARD!
wow, great bikes, all of them, that just needs super detail and fresh castrol, and to ride as much as possible. wow, i just got a 86 for 1100 bucks, 700c. Love them.
Just bought my 87 today for 1000.00 and will be riding it for at least a year and maybe sell or trade up to a 750 Shadow or bigger. I do not like real heavy bikes at my age.
I am 5"10 and it was a pretty good fit for me, and my buddy who got this bike in the end is over 6 foot and he never had any problems with it. You won't ever really know until you get on it and ride it around a bit
Probably, but not for a while. We will probably rent for a few months until we get our lives together enough to buy a house with a shop or where I can build a shop. But I probably won't be doing the same type of work, I want to get heavier into frame off restorations, custom stuff, and more serious mods like turbos and such
We always used soap and water and real fine steel wool to clean chrome. The steering being a little funky is due to the rake. Also the ideal should be set to 1100-1200 after warming up and off the choke.
@BleedingCrimson Good for you! That is a very worthwhile endeavor. 1. Definitely. Those bikes are very rare, lots of fun, and really cool. They are even worth a few bucks if you end up wanting to sell it. 2. There are a lot of good books out there, but to tell the truth the most good information is available on the forums. Thegsresources, sohc4, kzrider, all of these are populated by great guys with good information who are willing to teach. Searchable too. Good luck!
@skinz1234 Yeah I didnt go real detailed into this carb cleaning because I cover most of that in my carb cleaning videos. I clean pilot jets with carb cleaner, compressed air, and welder's tip cleaners. You should really only see a pinpoint dot of light, but it needs to be totally round. You might have vacuum leaks, dirty slides, clogged jets, improper float height, etc all kinds of stuff. Good luck dude yeah those carbs are tough to remove glad I only had to do this one once.
Obviously you must have oil in the engine before starting it up. But if someone can manage to follow these steps to repair their own bike, remove, clean, reinstall carbs, and replace the battery, and then make the mistake of running the bike without oil, theres nothing much I can do about that. I can't hold everyone's hand through everything. Yes I checked that there was oil in the bike, I did not document it in the video because I didn't think it was important because I felt it was implied.
Lol its funny we started this dialogue about oil, because if this bike is overfilled with oil even half a liter, it will burn a little grey smoke. Obviously a rich condition will produce black/grey smoke as well. Unless the smoke is white and obviously burning significant oil, pretty much anything else can be pretty easily adjusted/repaired
@skinz1234 I dont think it has separate chambers. You can just disconnect the fuel line and let it run on the ground and see if enough fuel is coming out. Sounds like your petcock needs restoring, I have a video up for that. If you are lean look for vacuum leaks, disconnected vacuum lines, etc.
Hey u finally got a VF motor :) Them carbs are a biotch to get in and out huh?!!! Whats the best way to clrean out them clogged pilot jets??? How much light should u be able to see through em cause i can barely see light through mine. THIS IS THE BIKE MOTOR I BEEN HAVIN PROBLEMS WITH!!!!! Mine still doesnt wanna react when i blip the throttle and when it finally does it revs up slowly and when i let go drops down slowly!!!!
@skinz1234 Yeah an ultrasonic bath does do an amazing job, I'd use one if I had one but I don't want to buy it and really, the old fashioned way is almost always sufficient. Doesn't sound like wore out rings or engine bearings unless you are getting excess smoke or knocking, really sounds carb related to me. Check your spark plugs to see if you are running rich or lean, make sure that air filter is good and mounted properly...
I live in mo and i cant find a good deal like that very often. They are out there but you seem to have better success then me. how many responds do you get typically when you put out a wtb ad?
Your statement about bleeding the clutch, what is used for fluid? Brake fluid? I'm about to HOPEFULLY get my hands on one of these soon and I'm doing some homework on repairs. The guy said something about the clutch being kinda funky but working, I wonder if that is the situation with his and he just doesn't know.
I really enjoy your videos. They're very informative. If by any chance you come across a Goldwing 1500, I'd love to see you break down the carbs, adjust idle, sync, etc... Keep up the great work! Happy Thanksgiving also
last question of the day. before i take up all your time :) adjusting the carb bro. 4 carbs and i cant turn the pilot screw without taking the air filters boxes off. if it bogs down at high rpms can it mean the screws too far in and did u synchronize it or should she still run decent before i get that far?
I wouldnt call them a nightmare, just a little challenging because they are sort of wedged in there with the boots facing opposite of each other so its harder to extract than an inline-4
Usually its just 1 or 2 per ad, and I only buy maybe 1 out of 5 bikes that are offered to me. Thats why I advertise in surrounding cities as well, sometimes travel 200 miles or more to go get a bike. PS my first car was a Camaro
@Chriswitahawk They say that the fumes from evaporating gas are more harmful to the atmosphere than burning gas, so I try to trap my old gas in a plastic container with a good lid until I can take it to my local dump for recycling. They can recycle old oil and gas together, so if you dont have a local dump you can just take it to any Advanced Auto parts or wherever they sell new oil, and dump it in their used oil tank, altho they might get a little salty about gas.
@Ambientanswers I got it for $500 and sold it to him for $900 plus his old bike, which I later turned into the CB550 cafe racer shown in one of my other restoration videos. As for the exhaust Im not sure if they are or are not transferable, if you get on the magna forums Im sure they could tell you, but my inclination would be probably not a straight swap.
@mrmaxstorey i will ill try it out and let u know thanks again, so if i am lean what do i do? 1 thing i have noticed is it seems my petcock sometimes works sometimes it dont. even tho i cleaned it and sealed it. does the tank have seperate chambers and how do i know nothings blocking the fuel. i will for sure put new fuel hoses on real soon just cause that parts easy!!!!
Hey Max, I've got a '74 Suzuki 185 I'm thinking about fixing up and using for my first bike until I can afford a nicer one, but I had some questions: 1. Is it worth it to fix up such an old bike? and 2. I'd like to get into building motorcycles and was wondering if you recommend any good books or any other tools that would really help a beginner. Thanks in advance.
@skinz1234 If you have a freeflowing air filter like a Uni or K&N, you might notice a small difference in the way it runs, but it should still run pretty good if it is still mounted properly. If the filter is very dirty it will be choking your engine, making it bog and run rich. And finally knock comes from the engine not the carbs, it is very distinguishable like a midget with a hammer inside your engine trying to get out. You'd know it if you heard it.
@Ambientanswers They are out there man... just gotta get your feelers out and find it. Everyone knows someone who knows someone with an old bike rusting away in their shed or backyard.
well last time i tried to drain the tank i couldnt get all the fuel out. some of it just wouldnt come out the bottem or the top no matter whch way i turned it. And its only got the 1 vacuum hose that hooks into the back of the carb box right and the 1 little hose on the petcock that allows fuel to run? how do u check for vacuum leaks there and how would they affect my problem? Sorry but alot of this stuff i never did :)
Having good oil in the bike is not all that important if the thing doesn't even run. Routine maintenance of the bike including clean oil changes is Jake's responsibility now. Getting a good battery in there and cleaning out the carbs is important shit, IMHO
Wow sweet bike. I used to really want a magna v45 or v65 but seeing this vid of the super makes me change my opinion on them. good looking, sounded awesome! Hey Max, could I post a video reply to your How to buy an old motorcycle video? I just bought a winter project and have been filming the progress. Wondering if you would be cool if I video replied with my intro video.
@skinz1234 Haha some choppers have big motors, but some guys who make their own choppers gotta use what engine they have on hand. The bike is a lot lighter than a normal bike anyways, so it can get by on a smaller motor.
my friend i did same thing to my 99 vulcan vn800 has not been running since 7 years but starts fine no problem but my question is that soon i want to rev up ot bugs down but once warm up is fine you think is something with carb maybe is running to lean i fix small engines kind of have idea but you are a pro what do you think should i look for
Yeah you use brake fluid for the clutch, if it feels mushy at all at the handlebar lever, or the bike is hard to get in/out of neutral, chances are the clutch slave cylinder needs to be bled. Not a big deal :)
Hi Max. I have an original '82 Magna and am looking for ideas to lift it off the floor to get the wheel out and service the forks. The frame rails actually sit ABOVE the front cylinder header pipes, so if I were to jack it with a motorcycle lift, the bike would rest on the header pipes and not on the frame rails! Any suggestions you can share?
Do you have a garage with rafters, or a large tree with a big branch? I would attach ratchet straps to the handlebars and lift the front end up in the air
Unfortunately not. However, last night, whilst laying under the bike looking for ideas I spotted a cross brace that links the two from rails together infront of the engine (i think this is called the subframe, you may be able to validate that for me) so I popped a block of wood under the side stand to get it vertical then jacked it on the subframe (citation needed :) then I was able to put axle stands under each of the frame rails. Job done. :)
You are probably right, the location was pretty bad though, such a tight spot. Also on mine the boots were so dried up, they were like glued on there. A whole lot of sweating and cussing and a bit bleeding I tell ya! =)
@mrmaxstorey dang u memorized alot!!!! well it is popping at deceleration on top of taking forever to rev up!!! and at a certian rpm it just stops accelerating, from there i can turn the throttle even more and i stay at a constant speed!!! just no reaction after a certain point when giving it gas. hard to explain!!! know what i mean? i can start riding and at about 4000 5000 rpm the bike just doesnt go above that the throttle does nothing. it bogs
hey everyone i am thinking about buying this same year bike and engine displacement but i am 6 foot tall and am wandering would i feel too big for this bike ? i have never owned a bike with a 700cc motor ive only rode 1100cc

lol about the midgettt!!! Your right i'd catch anyone trying to vandalize my bike :p love that shopper in your installing headlights vid, thats totally my style trying to do something like that to my bike on the xs1100 of course my motor will b way bigger. @max. Great job with the aluminum foil! Im gona do that at once. You always give good advise.

@skinz1234 The pilot screw really only adjusts at idle- 1/4 throttle. Its good for eliminating popping on deceleration and minor idle issues

@ShoNuffDC Bummer man I just did a GL1100 a few months ago. But if I find a 1500, I'll definitely put it up
It's ALIVE! Nice work, though. The foil trick is pretty nifty.

@ChuckLee28 Ether is starting fluid, and I sprayed it into the motorcycle air intake.
@mrmaxstorey i will ill try it out and let u know thanks again, so if i am lean what do i do? 1 thing i have noticed is it seems my petcock sometimes works sometimes it dont. even tho i cleaned it and sealed it. does the tank have seperate chambers and how do i know nothings blocking the fuel. i will for sure put new fuel hoses on real soon just cause that parts easy!!!!

thanks for doing this video. can you give us any instruction on how you cleaned out the carbs well
Sorry that bike is long gone
@@mrmaxstorey yes ok, but can you explain what you did
Cool looking bike. is it an 87 or 88? the title of the video says 87 but in the video you said 88.
Right on dude this magna probably could have used the attention of a good body man, but damn if it doesnt purr
Having good oil in the bike is not all that important if the thing doesn't even run. Routine maintenance of the bike including clean oil changes is Jake's responsibility now. Getting a good battery in there and cleaning out the carbs is important shit, IMHO
@ilikesuzuki Really not that much more difficult than inline 4's, just the removal/installation takes a little longer

I dunno, people always say how hard v-4 and v twin carbs are to remove, I dont think they are any more challenging than inline 4 carbs, just different
Ok, what about if the clutch needs serious work? Is it a huge undertaking to replace?
Awesome, will do man, thanks!
What's the eco-friendly "right way" to dispose of the "Piss water" old gasoline?
i have this exact bike... i love it
I have a 700 magna where is the best place to buy parts for it

bummer. you should fix it!
@danielainge Sure why not
@ChuckLee28 no prob
Yeah, he ended up selling it back to me when he left town

Super magnas were ONLY 700cc-1987, 750cc-1988. The v65 is 100cc and was not a super magna.
So, your starter motor is turning over the bike, but the engine isnt firing. Check out my video on how to repair a nonrunning motorcycle

@chris4240 Lol thanks man good luck
v4 carbs are a pain but are possible.....dont pry them on or off unless you like breakin stuff.....but super magnas are 1100 not 700 or 750s
Officially, there is no such thing as a "Super" Magna (Honda don't list it)
Correction, 1100cc v65, not 100cc!
That's MY bike, muhahaha!
