- Working as a Meat Department employee at Costco. It’s heavy labor and your lifting boxes weighing between 25-100lbs but it’s incredibly rewarding once you finish the job asked of you. I did my best to give you an idea of what working in the meat department is like, but if you have any questions I’ll answer them in the comments below.

Starting a new job in the meat department tomorrow at Costco. Found your video today, great video looking forward to my new job!
Starting today 😁
same. im 19 and i just need to find a job. will i cut off my finger
You guys are so lucky, i’m a meat cutter at Overland Park Kansas costco and our cooler is literally less than half that size! No room to use forklifts or anything. Huge pain in the ass lol. Good video
I worked in meat department for 2 days.. those boxes were too damn heavy.. stra8 manual labor.. hardest job I ever worked..
What a fucking puss. 😊
so you quit?
@@duckbrew try pushing carts , you’ll definitely quit lol
Those tall boys are looking mighty wobbly. That shimmy is the sign of good hard work.
This is strange to me. Im an opening meat wrapper too. Been working 2 yrs. My job is all the seafood so rewraps and fresh fish and frozen shellfish/roadshow items. Im expected to have all the seafood for the day done by the time we're open at 10 and i come in at 6. The manager typically does all the cooler stuff. Our cooler seems to be a lot bigger than yours. We have 1 skid for seafood, 1 for bull, 1 for all our prime, 2 for choice, 2 for pork, 2 for chicken, 1 for lamb and 1 for org grnd beef. We make about 210 to 225 a week. I noticed you guys also have a lot more counter space than us. We have 7 employees in our meat department although we should have 8 since 1 guy just quit. A bit eye opening to see you grab all that shrimp. I typically grab 2 or 3 cases of u15 and whole shrimp a day depending on the day of the week and how much carry over. We have the manager, the sup, 2 ft cutters, and 3 wrappers(should be 4). P cool to see how different it is.
Don't work at costco, you will thank me later. 17 years experienced
I'd say the complete opposite, what's your reasoning for this conclusion if I may ask? I love working at Costco and I've been compensated heavily for my extended years of working here.
@@UlSIGNI’ll tell you my experience, Costco is really fucking strict , my job is I push carts all day , they bitch an complain about every single thing, they write people up for the smallest things. I practically work everyday, it’s hard work , I’ve never been written up , or been late , I do my job , although today I was chewed up for pushing less then 10 carts lol I found that really fucking stupid , when the type of weather I have to work in , rn it’s hot and humid outside I’m out all day in this heat and I’m tired towards the end of my shift management decides to complain about me pushing less then 10 carts , out the cart box , there wasn’t much in it either so I pushed them out what was left to clear out 1 so I can move onto the next cart box . Stupid shit like that makes me not wanna be there as it is , we are also short on staffed because people quit , wonder why lol Costco is not a great company to work for that’s my own personal opinion.
Bonus is October 4th ! 17 years in
Hope you decide to use a back brace so you won't have old age back problems. I made the big mistake of abusing my back when I was young and am now paying the price.
Working at Costco Meat Department could be interesting. This video helps before I apply a job at Costco.
Enjoyed this video, I’m 23 years old I been working in the meat department for 2 years. (Meat Cutter) I work for a company in Texas called HEB we run 85-100 on a bad day & 110-130 on a good day (Saturday and Sundays) really really high volume. Always wonder how Costco does in the meat department & I will say I enjoyed every bit of it
Here before you blow bro
meat
Been in Publix meat for 17 years been thinking of going to Costco
im a closer at meat department at costco for year and a half about now.. definitely hard work lol, really cool to see how another meat dpt operates ! im in MN
I used to be a closer too. Closers are awesome! Now I’m a rendering man. I pick up the fat barrels at meat departments like this. Well, smaller stores. Not huge ones like Costco.
closer here as well for 2 months now, hate the cleanup part cus my boots be soaked and wet all the way home, hopefully work my way to a meat cutter
Back problems can sneak up on you as aging does affect your posture vertically lifting is the normal lifting stance
I enjoyed watching this video so great job on that and your hard work. You are a handsome man. Thanks again.
Awesome job bud, I’m a meat supervisor in Fl and it’s funny how we almost follow the same routine. You have a massive meat room tho, what’s your weekly sales? Mines around 350 a week and my cooler/meat room is half that size 😂
We do between 60-80 / day, roughly double what you make. Since its holiday season right now we made over 100k or close to it on a Saturday but our numbers are high because 1) We don't comp shop, no competitors and 2) We're right ourside DC, 10 miles away from the white house
I came from a slow store and even now I'm like this shit SUCKS LOL
having all those vending machines and snacks in the break room is dope
Is it free?
I wanted to apply at Costco Keo but I think I can make it. It’s not because I’m lazy it’s because I had a rotator cuff surgery I see that there has to pick up a heavy boxes 59,60 and 90 pounds. I can not lift heavy after the surgery. I wish there will be a light wait job. Thank you for the video.
I cut meat for a living, any way you can do a video on the automatic cutting machine I saw in the backgound?
Let me see if I can since there are specific cut specs that the company may consider private information. If so, then I can make a video or YT short explaining the machine as in-depth as I can.
What time did you start this shift it looked really early? Is it 8hr shifts? Great video 👍🏼
This is recorded starting at 5am. 5-1:30pm is the shift
Damn! They don’t even give u an electric power jack. Do meat cutters even make 70k a year here or just the meat manager?
Meat Manager makes close to $90k as salary. Meat Cutters make around $72k if you include bonuses
this looks exactly like the design i just got hired in
My god, he’s too handsome and FITT 🥰👍👏🏼. You would be a total distraction to work next to.
Hey ! Fellow meat dept worker. What paper do you print out to check what’s in the Load for the mornings ?
I can't get into specifics about anything paperwork related. If you want to know, I would ask your supervisor or manager and they can tell you how to print it out
Well let's hope I get call soon I put application for meat cutter
Meat cutters start at $18/hour but have the highest top-out at $30.(45?) / hour compared to any other base-level employee. It’s definitely worth being a meat cutter.
Are you the meat shopper/merchandiser? Usually bakery, deli and food court have a person doing that role. I’ve never seen a meat one though.
yes he does the work thats outside of cutting the actual meat
Tried to get on here worked in three different meat departments
What time do the meat cutters and rest of staff get there?
Meat cutters come at 6am and 8:30am
I want to work at Costco, any recommendations for them to hire me?
Know someone in the company or simply apply naturally sending out applications to many buildings. They’re hiring like crazy right now and need people badly.
Good place to work??
Do Costco workers in Oregon have to join a union
What is your title by chance, I’m trying for a meat cutter job
My official title is Meat Wrapper but I regularly cut meat and currently applied for a Cutter position.
I'm 35yar frozen food warkang Pakistan
No beard net?
If I'm producing and around product then absolutely, but otherwise we go by a 'if you can grab it, you need a beard net.'
I work at Costco in Cali what Costco do you work at?
This store is in Maryland 👍🏻
Put them machines together first… tho
The cutters set up the room in the morning. I take care of the ground beef and finish the cooler for them 👍🏻
Ask a ergonomic expert about these rules?
How do you thaw out that much shrimp?
The shrimp on that cart is to have a price tag placed on them for you to buy. You’re able to buy frozen 4lb shrimp bags at your Costco Meat Department
@@KeoTheFjord Oh I see. In our meat department we have to spray off all the ice on the shrimp, tray them and wrap them up. Its a complete pain in the ass. Im not even sure if we have a PLU for the bags.
@@lijahstrong I'm surprised since there's one of the top sellers in our store. Then again they sell Kirkland shrimp in the frozen section too. We defrost the shrimp where I am, but we also sell bags using 607
I just accepted a job today they said I’ll be packing the meat not sure what else as they didn’t say
You'll be wrapping the meat, stocking chicken, rotating dates, weighing up products, cleaning up the department, wiping down cases, etc. You might not be wrapping the meat in the beginning, but over time as you learn the item PLUs you will wrap more. For now these numbers wont mean much. Here are some to help you out:
Stew: 20
Top Round: 4
Tenderlion: 1
New York: 2
Ribeye: 5
Chuckroll: 51
Flap Meat: 7
Short Rib: 47
Top Sirloin: 542
You might suprise them if you remember some of these. Hope this helps, and good luck!
@@KeoTheFjord thanks! I’m just waiting for a check and hopefully start this month! Really excited but nervous!
I won't to come in meat cutter job
The top out is now $30.80 / hour
You could apply for a wrapper position. Or maybe a closer. Closers are awesome.
@@TimothyCatan where I can apply easy?
Iight work… you got a pretty big cooler too… shit … I would have been on that fish and tell them drivers to stop being so lazy
It’s a pretty easy job if everyone does their job.
That's a big IF. So much seniority in the dept. a fully staffed dept. is hardly a reality with all the PTO.
beast mode with those boxes omg.
... that's my Costco... I know that Costco, it's the one at the Westfield mall in Wheaton. That's freaking uncanny! I was checking around to see what the stores looked like inside before getting a membership but never expected to get a look at the one I'd actually be going to! XD cool video!
Your forklift drivers actually do their jobs, lucky you
They do a wonderful job of breaking my pallets and crashing into my $400 aluminum racks but I guess they’re alright 👍🏻
Yeah. F that shit. Between all that and dealing with customers I'd go jump off a bridge in a hurry. I'll stick to wholesale cutting for restaurants.
do all "floor" employees start at the same wage or do different departments pay differently?
Different departments pay differently. Front end cashier's get paid an extra $1 / hour. Optical gets an additional $4 premium on top of their cap out, Meat Cutters get paid more than Supervisors on the floor and Deli, where Meat Department Supervisors get an additional $3 dollars more than them ($31.40)
Usually 'skilled' jobs like forklift drivers, meat cutter, optical center, Hearing Aid, Front End, get paid more than someone working in Merchandise, stocking, Deli, Bakery. And since most people are part time, they do not have 'Service Clerk' status, and thus will top out at $1 less
@@KeoTheFjord thanks for the info. My local Costco seems to have several positions open so I’m thinking of applying. Meat cutter definitely seems physically demanding, luckily I’m not afraid of it 😂. Thanks for sharing. Oh one last question, I’m assuming the snacks aren’t free 🤔.
@@jerrykovis5417 Meat Cutter is actually a pretty easy job compared to a meat wrapper.
And no, snacks aren't free and kinda overpriced. The Canteen company charges as much as a $1.25 for a poptart when a box of 6 costs $3.65. It's a bit steep but good if you want a snack here or there
@@jerrykovis5417hi jerry…theses days nothing is free
Was interested in this job until i seen how much boxes you got to lift…. I done warehouse jobs and quit it, i don’t want to have arthritis and back problems.
This is specifically the meat department. Stocking is a bit better weight wise, unless you decide to do clothing, returns, membership, etc.
How many people do you work with. In my meat department in Montgomeryville, pa we have 6 or 7 people. We also have about a quarter of the cooler size that we share with the deli.
We have 13 people who work in the department. We’re one of the busiest stores on the East Coast, if not the busiest. I’ve worked in an older Costco where you have the small steels that you have to manually put boxes into and climb over pallets to get what you need. This cooler is much better by miles
@@KeoTheFjord theres 6 of us in our dpt but where much slower then you guys lol, couldnt imagine all that fish holy shit
@@MichaelFerragine it sucks we blow through almost all of it before Tuesday after the weekend rush. We literally can’t do enough stew, fish, or have enough chicken to save our lives
@@KeoTheFjord jesus lol would love to see another video man if its okay with costco i have no idea lol, i have a meat cutter guy thats been with the company for 30 years or so and hes like, just get the fuck outa here while u can lmao
Whats the pay like at Costco? Im a lead cutter in a old butcher shop and make 22.90hr.
I'm now a meat cutter. I'm currently paid $30.80 an hour
@@KeoTheFjord thank you for the quick reply! I might just have to apply to find out what the pay is like in my area. How long have you been with Costco for?
@@cooperthebutcher5920 6 and a half years! If you apply, you will have to nogotiate your pay otherwise they'll start you at $19 / hour. My coworker nogotiated up to $27 / hour, but every Costco in the US is the same.
@@KeoTheFjord sound like a no brainer to me. Lol. Are the hours consistently 40 a week or more? Or do they cut hours down to 32 sometimes?
@@cooperthebutcher5920 Meat Cutters are strictly full time so 40 hours guarenteed every week, unless there are days you'd like to use your PTO or volentary unpaid. Really good job if you want to do other things on the side
Forth week in...... ripped like Arnold Schwarzenegger?
This job keeps me very much in shape lol
Im thinking of applying as a meat wrapper and work up as being a cutter in Costco
It’s definitely worth it. Costco has become a good backbone job. Meat cutters get paid extremely well topping out at $30.48
Too bad that's not how they typically promote.
This is true. The company quickly became a part time job, I should make a video about how Costco isn’t the Costco it used to be.
Meat wrapping is an awesome career!
I’m a 17 year meat cutter/ manager, I’ve always heard Costco was a great place for meat cutters, did this location have a sausage press as well? I’ve seen a few stores make sausage in store ( using sausage tubes that come like ground beef)
Hey!
No, they do not have a sausage press. Respectfully, Costco meat cutting is pretty bare bones comparitively to genuine local butchers or places that process whole cow. It also depends on where you live and what country because it can change what that warehouse carries. They base their products off of demographic.
@@KeoTheFjord understandable, I’m in Canada, and I’ve worked in a few different big box stores that are similar to Costco ( Loblaws banners) that are pretty basic for meat cutting just a lot of volume. Loblaws is also moving to more case ready meat as well ie mainly cutting beef and a little pork
There are Acc or accident compensation laws regarding lifting weights hi Kiaora from new Zealand it's supports women empoyees Of maximum of 26 LBS assistant for more awkward lifts
I’m a asst manager in a meat room and it’s just me and the manager. It’s only been us two for about 2 months
It’s going to be the both of you for another year. We have people in our department leaving left and right due to managerial issues. In this month alone we had one person quit and two full-time employees drop down to 24 hours / week, 3 - 8 hour days. It’s getting rough.
How much do they pay? I’m a meat cutter at El Super, and it’s shitty pay and terrible management
@@snoopdogg2959 $30.80 / hour when you're topped out as a meat cutter. Meat Wrappers are $26.40 I think. I'm going to make a spicy Costco Issues video soon. Almost everyone, in every warehouse, unanimously agrees that management is a massive issue.
@@KeoTheFjord Better pay than my store, I’m earning 17.50 and honestly the amount of work and stress you get for little pay is bs. I been asking for a raise for a year now and they just ignore it. I can’t wait to switch over to Costco or Stater Bros cause I’m gonna expose the nasty shit we sell behind the counters and notify health department after I leave
The cleaning process before closing is a nightmare
I love those smile.. it means u love your work so much 😊
dude the pallet wrap tip is legit, now i work in the dept at my work that orders it for all our staff so i have more rolls then ill ever need.
All rounder meet shops
Not against company policy to be filming your work?
Nah, no where in policy does it state I can't film or record what I do. Plus, everything that I've shown you are things you can see yourself in store aside from the cooler. The only things I can't show you are documents or computer details, store numbers, etc.
What state is that in
easy job :)
Do you just work in meat department working in the cool room all day ?
Pretty much. Stock the outside, weigh items up, cut meat, clean, etc. Etc. The room we work in is cold year round, so we wear sweaters and hoodies to keep warm.
@@KeoTheFjord awsome in trying to get In at the moment applied and just waiting on them thanks for response 👍
what do wrappers make ?
Wrappers top out at $26.50
@@KeoTheFjord is the Bone in pork and boneless pork cut with machines or do guys still cut with bandsaw or just with knives for boneless pork?
@@wgwrigel1 boneless pork is cut with a knife at our location but some locations have a meat slicer next to the cutting board if they have high volume sales to slice all the boneless pork super quick. Bone in pork is either cut on the bandsaw or slicer, but since we cut Halal lamb on the bandsaw its best we do it in the slicer
