  • For this session I'm using a chameleon 3b with a PT3000 on level 1 and it's paired to a sound box to indicate when I press the button. When you hear an audible sound that indicates the ecollar being activated on level 1.
Shred is a working dog. She keeps a yard secure at night. When not performing this role we often use her as a training aid for decoys and handlers. So she hasn't really been formally trained to do anything.
Therefore, she knows a little of lots and lots of nothing. The perfect dog to demonstrate how utilising low level stimulation with an ecollar can be highly effective as a communication tool.
In this session I'm teaching Shred to listen and not guess when words are spoken. She has done a lot of downs and prefers that position. So choosing the sit was a difficult problem for her. She isn't being disobedient but she also isn't concentrating on what I'm saying. She's guessing. This isn't a shaping session and I want her to concentrate on what she is being told.
I'm teaching her to think and problem solve by using low level stim as a negative reinforcer below her level of hope. I'm using low levels because I'm not sure exactly what she knows and I want her to think clearly and problem solve. She won't be able to do that at a level that bothers her excessively.
The stim basically tells her to keep trying. It gets her attention without making her scared. It annoys her but doesn't put her into a state of emergency. I don't want her there. I want her calm and clear headed enough to think and problem solve.
When using an ecollar as a negative reinforcer we must remember that it provides no direction. You should not consider raising the level unless you are certain the dog understands the desired behaviour and that they can control the ecollar. Excessive stimulation will demotivate the dog and risk learned helplessness. This must be avoided.
Here Shred started to learn and worked harder due to the mild discomfort. You'll notice the stim wasn't used everytime. The dog needs to know they can turn it off and on. And, most importantly, they can avoid it altogether if they try hard.
    This is NePoPo...

I know I will piss a lot of people off, but the Ne Po Po stuff has been used since the 80’s! It was just given a cool name. Plus, the vast majority of dogs get collar wise and fail to perform when they know it is not on. I guess in the sport world it doesn’t really matter unless you were in a competition and tune up the dog prior to hitting the field. However, in the real world it is nice to have a dog that will perform if the collar malfunctions, or not charged. I also believe some of the marking of behavior was slightly off. I truly am not being critical, it is just an opinion and like they say opinions are like assholes.

Yeah, I agree. Trainer consistency is off. The more "nepopo" I'm viewing the less impressed I become.

Beautiful illustration of both the methodology and its effectiveness! BTW: Mind sharing what/where from of your floor tiles? We are just a little ways from the flooring on our studio remodel. Looking at the rolled rubber sheeting (~ 1/8” T) used on flat roofs. Yours looks modular, which would be preferable to 12’ wide rolls/sheets. Thanks in advance! But more, thanks for y’all’s content! Y’all do Bellons’ legacy proud!

Do you like the Chameleon? I have a ecollar tech. Thinking of getting the Chameleon. You’re using the finger kick in this vid right?

I've listened to Bart Bellon explaining his nepopo and it is; NE (Negative): The dog learns that certain behaviors lead to discomfort (negative punishment), typically through the use of an e-collar. This is used to discourage undesirable behaviors.
PO (Positive - Relief): When the dog stops the undesirable behavior and discomfort stops, it experiences relief, which becomes a positive feeling.
PO (Positive - Reward): After the dog stops the undesirable behavior, it receives a positive reward (treats, praise, play) as reinforcement for complying.
NE (Negative - Reinforcement): If the dog doesn't comply, the e-collar's correction is applied again, motivating the dog to quickly perform the desired behavior to escape the discomfort.

Thanks for showing! to much e-collar for my taste, you can easily accomplish this behavior without it

Its a super example that your dog linked really fast. That YES means the sit position. Everytime you say yes it sits
