Fr I thought it was willem dafoe, especially when he says godspeed
He actually made multiple recordings of various voices for the role. It impressed the casting director a lot.

He’s the standout and bale the weakest link which to me was shocking. Bale wasn’t bad but picked a weird accent. He stood out to me in a bad way

Also, Mark Hamill has been in ghibli 2x here as the old man and he was the creepy pedo dude in castle in the sky

According to the Studio Ghibli Wiki, when the movie was going to be dubbed, the casting director considered Danny Devito for the role of the Heron. However, since the Japanese version had Masaki Suda, a male pop-idol, voicing the role, they decided to cast someone who would not fit the mold of the character, and Pattison was cast when he played recording of himself voicing the Heron.
Robert Pattinson wouldn't make a bad imperfect Cell with that voice.

I love that Mark Hamill has been voicing characters in Miyazaki movies since Nausicaa.
Technically his first was Muska in _Castle in the Sky_ followed by the Mayor of Pejite in the English dub _Nausicäa_

He was also Lord Ozai
Growing up watching Studio Ghibli I'm so excited for this. I'm 30 now 😂 I'll definitely be going to the best cinema to watch then watch it on Netflix or Disney again and again
If you can, while it’s still in theaters, try to find one in Dolby Cinema. Dolby Cinema is the closest a projector (in this case it’s a Christie Projector that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars for the theater in question) can get to OLED quality. I also grew up on Ghibli films. I’m coming up on 40 myself. In fact I’ll be turning 38 on the 27th of December.
I saw it in the Japanese version. It’s very good! But I feel I would connect with it more if I see it again in English
I loved it honestly just do a little research on Hayaos life if you don't know anything it helps make it so much better along with seeing all the other movies ofc, I understand why some people were disappointed but it was very detail oriented of course

I just got home from watching the movie. I went in without watching trailers or knowing the cast, and I was really surprised at the end of the film to see how prominent the English cast is!

I am so impressed with Robert Pattinson’s voice acting. The heron was hands down my favorite character. I had assumed it was Mark Hamil voicing the heron and was gobsmacked when I saw it was Robert in the credits!! Great job dude!
It really hits different to see hollywood actors give anime movies with the reverence they deserve. Ghibli really broke that stereotype when it came to anime and bad English dubs, or anime being treated as something just for children. Would have been extra cool to have someone like Steve Blum or Ian Sinclair mixed into this cast tho.

Rob does so good in roles you would never expect him to be good at. He’s always been a great actor, but he’s pushing his limits here and we love to see it.
Also brings back a smidge of my faith in celebrity voice acting. Some celebrities can be good at voice acting and Robin and Robert show that being selective can be a good thing in that industry.
Don't forget Mark Hamill. Legendary actor and voice actor.

Saw this anime yesterday, and was surprised it was the original Japanese version with subtitles because I was expecting this dubbed version. The Boy and the Heron is another affecting visual masterpiece from visionary artist Hayao Miyazaki. ❤
