hey guys, great episode but in the past there were a few more snippits of the actual song. now i find myself not rembering how the song went and a bit of extra context is rarely a bad idea. thanks for the top tier content and the songwriting lessons.
Probably avoiding copyright strikes
I agree on this, but I think it is also a copyright thing. So, maybe just link to the discussed songs (which they've done).
Same here
Agreed but assume it's related to copyright issues
It's definitely for copyright, but it also kind of defeats the purpose of the whole video. Maybe they should do more artists who aren't going to issue copyright strikes, like Vulfpeck.
I really hope harmony is making a comeback in pop music because it has been sorely missed. I love the way Harry uses it on this new album. Harmony has always been my favorite element in any song
If you haven't yet, please, check out his previous works, like Ever Since New York from debut album, Cherry, To Be So Lonely, Canyon Moon from Fine Line - all have great harmonies. Fine Line the song sounds almost symphonic it has crazy instrumental harmonies as well. I love how his boyband legacy gave him this fresh spin on his solo sound, it sounds timeless, I love it a lot
@@OceanChild7 oh yes all great songs! Harry has been on a roll
One of best albums of the year so far, love where pop is heading. Daddy Harry's got it down
Harry is a product of a good record collection. he is a vinyl mining pastiche artist. (could use a bit of grit)
What other records would you include in best albums of 2022?
@@ZalexMusic I've really been digging Parrhesia
That “In My Life”/plagal cadence/musical vocabulary segment was beautiful. It solidified my motivation to improve my ear training, not as an improvising musician, but as a songwriter. This show is the only one I check for on RUclips, and this is why. I am your audience!
I love that you guys did a harmonic analysis on this. I found the fact that Harry added the V7 of vi at the very end of the chorus so cool and inspiring as a way to add energy to the progression.
Loved your break down. Please do more of his songs from 'Harry's House'. I would assume you've heard Harry's first two albums, 'Harry Styles & 'Fine Line'. I'd like to hear what you think on those too.
I ALMOST missed this video because of the re-brand but I noticed eventually. Dead Wax is such a vibe of a name though love it.
Harry's been using harmonies, vocal and instrumental in all his solo music, his Fine Line album was released in 2019 2 years before SilkSonic was born and it still reflecs the 70th vibe)) I love his creative decisions so much. He's a music geek and you can totally hear i from most of his music. I wish you'd dissect his song called "She" from previous album. It is an unusual song for a pop record I'd say but it's one of fans favourite.
Generally, I just adore this format and your enthusiasm is so contageous, makes me wanna buy a piano asap and follow up everything you were discussing here!))) Very informative, thank you so much about it!!
Maybe it’s the «vibe» of the 70s in sound, just like the visual aesthetic. But that’s just like the filter on your camera compared to the real harmonic legacy of the 70s especially representer by R&B artists like Stevie Wonder and EW&F. Styles is a musical midget in this respect, while he may have other qualities.
@@jenschristianblom your opinion is subjective but totally valid, peace)
Love Harry Styles (especially his 1st and 3r album) AND Rina Sawayama (Sawayama, the album, was one of my fav albums in 2020... the use of different genres 👩🏼🍳😘, the nostalgia, soooo good. Love Dynasty, Who's Gonna Save U Now?, Snakeskin, STFU) so this video was a treat y'all 🥰
Thanks for watching Dani!
Holy moly! Have been listening to Switched on Pop for ever and had no idea what Charlie looked like! Great to put a face on his voice!!! YAY! Thanks for this episode, LOVE Harry.
I actually send a body double for all video tapings
@@CharlesHardingA Good to know. I guess you sent the same guy for your RUclips profile pic? Or maybe they're twins 🤔.
omg, late night talking is the first song i liked on the album. thank you for covering it.
You having Charlie on was surreal to me, as i've been listening to that same voice on Switched on Pop for so many years. Much love to y'all and all the amazing guests :))
Thanks for listening!
Same, love SOP
Nice that you noted As it Was quite fast paced for a contemporary pop song! Like 80s new wave songs - New Musik, the Shirts
Ok, Jack, I'm totally with you on "I Only Have Eyes For You". I've been fascinated by that song for decades. It's a brilliant composition (and arrangement) that's noticeably different from the other music of its era.
The analysis really makes me appreciate music I ordinarily would not think to pay attention to! 🎶
Love H, I loved the episode! Please react more often to Harry Styles.
Liking the rebrand. Keep up the good work. A thought on a possible future episode would be Yellow Magic Orchestra, maybe their song Rydeen or Technopolis. These tunes are so distinctive (and a bit bonkers), plus they were just so ahead of their time. Would be a cool tune to discuss perhaps with a guest from an electronic music background.
So early where I am ,yet still gonna watch while getting ready for work , a podcast would also be wonderful, just an idea only
Kid Harpoon, Tyler Johnson, Mitch Rowland and Amy Allen are credited for helping Harry write Harry’s House.
This is why I watch dead wax and not needle drop
Thanks for your reaction guys! Loved writing this with Harry!
Such a great episode guys! We learn something about songwriting/composition, arrangement, voicings etc. with every segment. Great to have Charlie on as a guest. As with some of the commenters, I really enjoy the material they cover on "Switched on Pop". And... the song recommendations at the end are great! The Flamingoes Warren/Dubin song is a classic - drenched in reverb with great vocals. Emmitt Rhodes is another inspired choice. He was such a talented songwriter, arranger, vocalist and engineer. Comparisons to Paul McCartney were appropriate. A true artist!
Great episode, I love the focus on the songwriting and harmony etc. I do enjoy when people tell stories about the recording but the talk on melodies, harmony etc is particularly interesting to me
First time watching and man you guys are real music nerds and I mean this in the most respectful way possible. Great channel!
Big up Dead Wax! Loving Styles' new album, wasn't even on my radar before but great sound
I hope so very much, too. Come on harmony.
Love the album .
When recording his songs Harry sings almost all of the voices himself. Rarely does anyone else sing on the recordings. Only when live does his band sing with him. His drummer is ace. You should watch a live performance of him.
Hi,
The last twenty years or so I had multiple issues with popmusic on the radio.
But this artist is great!
When I heard ‘As it was’ for the first time on the radio, it felt the same as being a young kid in the early ‘80’s!
So perhaps popmusic isn’t over...
🖖
you guys are amazing, i love the show
Learned a lot, thanks! (and as a regular Switched on Pop listener it was great to see Charlie here. Bring on Nate next time too!)
Love the rebranding! I know it might be kind of out of your wheelhouse, but I've been listening to System of a Down a lot lately and would really love a deep dive into the song structure. Your guy's perspective is always enlightening and SOAD might be a great challenge. 😄❤
no offense to SOAD, but Mr.Bungle does it better ... (Mike Patton is a genius)
Loved(!) the format from the very beginning and particularly enjoyed the theoretical and technical exploration and interpretation of songwriting of the songs in this one, very much looking forward to the next videos in the new branding♥️
I'm glad you enjoyed it Lukas!
Good job reducing the time of the episode, it's more enjoyable in my opinion. Love from Italy ❤️
I guess it makes sense that your first subject under the Dead Wax moniker is a guy who was born after wax/vinyl was pretty much dead thanks to the CD. 😊
Nice work as always, guys.
I think „As it was“ sounds so familiar from the first note because it has so much vibe from „a-ha“ in it (well… at least to me because I grew up in the 80/90ies and I think you both also can relate 😁)
Exactly. I kept thinking that while watching them: come on guys, spit it out, this is a textbook A-Ha synth vibe!
I would love to see you guys tackle some concept albums and the relation between musical story telling and the synergy of lyrics.
Highly recommend The Dear Hunter - Antimai.
love this! gave so many interesting insights
i think Harry listened to the Cardigans "Lovefool" just before he wrote Late Night Talking
I think the "distorted cheesy 80s brass" thingy is reminiscent of the iconic "Orch Hit" patch in the Fairlight CMI. Like a newer, fresher take on that well-known sound. Think "Owner Of A Lonely Heart", for example.
Art of Noise production
Did you guys notice how the bridge of "As It Was" sounds like "Ball of Confusion" by the Temptations. There's also a part that has a similar progression to Sia's "Chandelier" "But I'm holding on for dear life
Won't look down, won't open my eyes"
The reason why the song feels long is because there are so many things that happened. It makes you feel like you went through a whole journey. I try to do tht with my own music. If you are dedicating 3min of your life to listen to me. I want to give you appetizer, main course and dessert
Love the new name. Perfect. 😙👌🏻
Great episode! No matter what it's called I will keep on watching because I always learn so much!
I happened to have closed captions on and at about 11:55 it said "the first time that corporation gets through to the end." Took me a couple seconds to figure out he said "chord progression."
DeadWax is one cool name. Good find!
7 am where I live, thanks for the morning show, guys!
Loved your amazing work over here! Well done, guys!! Keep flowing!
Covers. Something cool to check out would be what makes a cover stand out or resonate above the original.
as a massive harry fan this makes me so happy!!!
Could you do a video discussing some top musical theatre songs and what makes them feel so epic? Songs like One Day More, Defying Gravity, This Is Me or All That Jazz? Get a Broadway/West End performed like Shoshana Bean? I think it would be fascinating.
Talking of harmony in pop music, I'd love to hear you guys talk about a Depeche Mode song, like "Enjoy the Silence" or "Everything Counts". Martin Gore is (to me) a master of inserting weird chords into a pop song.
His vocals in Late Night Talking really remind me of Paul Simon's wonderful Graceland album.
Also... "the sound," completely reminds me of a mangled sample from Bowie's Let's Dance.
@@darthwhit Omg, yes! In my case, when I listened LNT the first time it reminded me of "Time (Clock of the Heart)" by Culture Club, especially the chorus.
I really hope that there will be more skilled musicians in the future who are able to write good melodies/harmonies/chord progressions, because most music of the last 15years was kinda boring and only beat based
Hey guys, amazing episode as always. For future episodes you should listen to Jordan Rakei, he's a incredible songwriter and musician with a bunch of interesting influences like D'Angelo, Radiohead and Jeff Buckley all convine into cohesive soulful/odd time sound.
this guy is good but, he's not in the league with Jeff or Thom.
Another great episode fellas! Long love dead wax! Guessing y'all were trying to not play the songs? I missed not having more context.
Jack have you heard Art Garfunkel’s version? I’d love to hear the channels thoughts on songs from Harry’s Fine Line as well. “Grapejuice” from Harry’s House was giving me a mash up between Wings “Let ‘Em In” and The Spinners “Rubberband Man”!
Amazing ❤️
you mention harmony in the title and you don't talk about Boyfriends? Please check it out, esp. The First Take version - gorgeous.
I'm not a musician so don't understand a lot of this, but it's fun to listen to. And it makes me think about why I like the Chris thile song dates.
honestly i feel like i could listen dead wax talking forever
"[Harry Styles] and Silk Sonic. If there's a third, I'm gonna say three trees make a forest here and I'm gonna start celebrating the return of harmony".
I have no musical education beyond just watching youtubers like yall, but I think About Damn Time by Lizzo sounds like it has interesting enough harmony to fit in the "post-Silk Sonic pop harmony" trend? Or maybe I'm just being fooled by the CHIC stylings.
Why no one noticed 'As it was' song and its similarities with 'A-ha : Take on me' !
Please do Tash Sultana 🙏🏽 but just so you know - best podcast ever, each episode is so amazing! Hi from Croatia 😁😁😁
Great episode! I think y’all would dig the new Tim Bernardes album 🙂
Tim is great. check out Thiago Nassif
Can we get a frank ocean video 🙄!!?
This, the Blonde album is one of the best albums of the last decade
Great analysis and breakdown, gentlemen. Really appreciate all the theory mixed with your emotional reactions. Killer blend for amateur music heads like me and all the pros who play like you guys. Much respect and appreciation.
Song worth a listen:
" Delicate Creature" by iogi. Dreamy groove with some genuinely surprising turns, clean-tone leads, and sublime vocals throughout. Gorgeous.
Great episode! I would love to hear you talk about any song from Lizzy McAlpine’s latest album “five minutes flat”. I think the production of the album is absolutely great.
I find these discussions so interesting and enlightening in many ways….
Could we please have an analysis of “Next To You” by pop/funk fusion trio Dirty Loops?
I think this would hit all those points perfectly-, a perfectly masterful creation between these and more genres….
Thanks! 👍
With all this harmony and chord changes in mind can you guys do a breakdown of Swwet Adeline and Tomorrow Tomorrow by Elliot Smith, please????
I would love to see you talk about some japanese funk artist like casiopea, T-square, Masayoshi Takanaka. Recently I listen to more of that stuff and seeing you talk about this music would be really intresting.
you guys should listen to haruomi hosono. harry style said that harry's house is a tribute to haruomi hosono.
Gents, I now this is an 'old' episode, BUT, I hear changes and pulse from The Cardigans "Lovefool" ( in a good way) as well. Cheers
Great episode! On "As it was" (great song nonetheless) : a big tribute to "Take on me" (chord progression is litterally the same but stretched, even the lead nods to the same rhythmic pattern)
great episode as always! would love to hear you guys talk about Tame Impala/Kevin Parker. Lots of interesting production and harmony there to analyze! 🙏
I've been listening to a lot of Nick Drake recently, would love if you guys discussed him sometime
Speaking of dead wax, sometime in the 80s/90s a couple groups added messages in the dead wax section. Sadly, I do not have any in my vinyl collection so I cannot remember which ones. Does anyone have examples? Is memory just faulty?
You should do a couple of songs for each of his 3 albums, I'd suggest you take Watermelon Sugar and She for Fine Line (WS is such a overplayed song but I still love it and I hear a lot of cool things that don't get you bored of it). And for his debut album you should take Sign Of The Times and Carolina, also contrast songs and I really want to hear your thouhgts on that))
Love your podcast, participants and expert opinions. Can you do something on the group Cameo?
Charlie is another artist that is making great pop music with some harmonic richness and lizzy mcalphine it is another one.
Where's Tim the sound engineer?
great work
Please please keep a list of all the song recommendations!
I really rate these two songs too.
Is it just me, or does Late Night Talking have a Super Tramp vibe to you?
When I first heard the song it was playing through a PA and I couldn’t make out the lyrics or the age of the song, but it made me think of Super Tramp.
Also Emitt Rhodes is brutally underrated. That first solo album is as good as any McCartney album
I miss the jingle of "Musicians React"
we need some happy music,
Why the rebranding? I liked the name PMR. To me Dead Wax isn't a good name. I'm still watching every episode though! ✌️❤️✌️❤️
I suppose they wanted to get rid of the reaction part, because they cannot play a lot of music without copyright strikes.
Same thing as on Rick Beato's Channel: the music industry is killing their best marketing they would get for free...
Where do I get a dead wax decal and t-shirt? Retro/fade option please on the logo for the shirt!
You guys should check out "music for a sushi restaurant" super interesting harmony and keychanges etc
Hi Guys, just a comment on the Cheezy 80's Brass. You'll find the line in Duran Duran's View to a kill it's right after the intro.
Fuckin love Rina ❤
again .. please check the Helix Nebula "Meridian" EP album .. I know it is not your usual jam but you won't be disappointed!! I mean Ployphia, great as they might be, can't even hold a candle to those guys - even though the band made nothing other than the "Meridian" EP!
I was really curious about this video since I read the title as "How Hair Styles brought harmony back to pop music." Was that just me? :) Great video nonetheless!
I think ur third tree in the reinvigorated harmonic exploratory pop world is this guy named Eddie Benjamin. Crazy talent with some really interesting tracks, songwriting wise and production wise
I have to say that I think Post Malone was using harmony in his songs and it was central to the soumds, before Harry.
I'm not sure what it says about you when you are just as excited to see Harry on a episode as Louis Cole, but here we are. 😹
Can you please go through the works of Andy Hull? Manchester Orchestra, Bad Books, Right Away Great Captain? It would be super epic to hear your guys opinion on how the albums and atmosphere has changed over the last 10/15 years? Thanks boooyyyyssss!
Check out Harrys cover of Sledgehammer on Howard Stern a few months back, right here on YT.
Jack! How can I get a DeadWax sticker for my cello case? :)
