- Traditions Trapper .50 cal. flintlock pistol with a little trigger tuning and minor adjustments. Loading, then shooting at 35 and 50 yard steel plate targets. Shooting starts at 1:05.
I can't believe how long it took humanity to go "well this could be quicker"
There were not many people with the economic and political level to really invest in better firearms besides the nobility wich were too conservative to think of something more practical for the army, this is one of the reasons at ww1people thaught cavalry charges were still useful.
You think it's that easy to come up with the idea that the bullet could come already equipped with the powder in the form of a cartridge? And it was the early 19th century, after industrialization already kicked in, at least in the UK-I assume that even if someone had thought of that before, no mass production of such cartridges would have been possible with only man power at your disposal.
Some people carried a couple of them, Blackbeard carried 8 of them
topple Never, as long as we have primate brain. Too bad
Why do people comment if they have no idea what they are talking about,it took so long to make the process quicker cause mercury fulminate wasnt invented till the early 19th century, people thought about and did carry premade bullets called sabots,if the fulmniate was discovered earlier so would have been a precussion cap then a rimfire munition and bolt action weapons etc.
This is unbelievably accurate for a flintlock pistol! It might be a good idea not to load it with a powder flask though, one smouldering ember and you will loose your hand!
Englishman French Because of the patent breech on this pistol, I swab out the barrel and breech after every shot to avoid ignition problems. Even so, it is the safest general practice not to charge from the flask. Thank you for watching!
As Englishman French said, that is indeed an accurate pistol. Is that because of its modern construction and powder, or is the accuracy typical of the flintlock pistols used way back in the day?
I don't think they were this accurate back in the day
newuser285 the reason for the strategies during the era of the flintlock pistol/rifle was because of the inaccuracy. the reason for line infantry and such was because of the inaccuracy of the flintlock. though I also think reload time and such also played a part. so this accuracy is probably due to modern technology or edited selected shots that were hits.
Even back then, some flintlock pistols were rifled. Makes wonders for accuracy.
Smooth bore ones are called "punches" over here : you had to be within punching distance to hit anything (that's an exageration, but not by much : you could miss a man sized target at 6 to 8m). :)
Modern manufacturing sure helps, too.
Impressive aim. Flintlock pistols feel tricky to aim right, at least from my perspective. Especially when the target's a good distance away.
I love how hilariously slow early firearms where when it came to loading.
Yep. Some people countered this by carrying more guns. In the early days of cap and ball revolvers especially texas rangers would often have as many as six on their person at all times
in the 1840s Patterson revolvers apparently would come with a spare cylinder that you could preload and cap for quicker reloading, and was used by Texas Rangers, since the Patterson had to be basically disassembled to reload. I'm curious though if that was just a matter of cost and convenience as opposed to carrying an extra gun or two, or if it was actually quicker than simply switching to your other revolver.
Image having to load this thing during battle
Panda Guy that's why u carry 2
Panda Guy that's why swords were still in use
Don’t use a pistol in battle--use a musket with paper cartridges.
Image if you miss the damn target after the reload -_-''
You don't
old guns are so much cooler
Fruitrobot a ur damn right but i wish i have one though
Fruit person Ikr like sawed off shotguns and muskets
The charm of the pre-industrial era when things weren't mass produced and each unit of any kind of utensil could be unique in some way.
Not saying that it used to be better though.
True. But they were also less effective.
Cooler but less efficient
so it took around 50 seconds to reload a flintlock
assassins creed logic
reload 1400's wrist mounted gun 1 second
reload 1700's Flintlock Pistol 5 seconds
now this is a JOKE
so dont take it seriously
For a standard Smoothbore flintlock it’d take around 15 seconds to reload from a cartridge. In AC3 it’s actually very accurate. But In Black Flag they screwed it for the sake of saving the player time
Sea of thieves logic
2 seconds reload a flintflock gun
Yeah
The pistols they used in Assassins Creed were percussion cap pistols hahaha 1800s guns
I guess just for gameplay reasons
This kind of weapons made the “every shot counts” a firmly fact in the battlefield; but the warfare in those times where almost like some kind of a turn base RPG video game.
I shoot the villain with my pistol, good sir! *rolls a 1*
Goddamn this is accurate for a flintlock
***** Read the title
That's what I was thinking too. I must try one of those traditions trappers. I've been looking to get a flintlock.
I got mine last year and it's the same model so let me know if you have any questions!! There's a lot that goes into having one of these and maintaining it as well as all the safety shit so you don't die.
These used to leave some pretty bad wounds back in the day . I would have this baby by bed ready to shoot just case
@@SamCulperJr every modern gun has rifling. If we do find a firearm by the technique used to improve accuracy of the projectile than every gun on earth would be a rifle and that’s simply not the case. This man is an extremely accurate shooter. You would be hard-pressed to hit the target at 50 yards with any modern handgun as consistent as the man in this video.
Thanks for the video, it was really helpful - I'm an artist and have been trying to sculpt one of these for days. Really couldn't get my head around how it worked!
The fact that this flintlock pistol has a rifled barrel helps a great deal with accurracy, compared to smooth bore pistols.
I've got the cap version of that and soon as funds allow I want the flint like yours. that is some mighty fine shooting friend
She has a nice steady hand before pulling the trigger. Good job!
Your one hell of a shot!
I'm awful with pistols. Last time I shot one I couldn't hit a target less than ten feet away, and it was a modern fire arm. Your using a pistol design that's hundreds of years old. You must have done a lot of practicing to get this good.
How. 10ft? How?
I think that's just your own issues with depth perception, cuz even the most inexperienced child can manage to hit a target that's only 10 feet away. Hell I was plinking away at shit 50 yards away near dead center by the time I was 10, it's pretty easy if you just fucking aim the gun and line up the sights right lol.
That's got to be the best pirate I've ever seen...
My dad left me a Kentucky Flintlock Pistol replica he made from a kit I believe from Dixie Gunworks many years ago. I never shot it but its a great conversation piece. It is totally functional and I just keep it clean. Maybe I'll shoot it some day...after careful inspection of course.
check out www.geojohn.org/BlackPowder/Musketoon/ShootingTheFlintlock.html for some encouragement
That's some nice shooting! I just ordered my Trapper. Can't wait to take it to the range.
wow Hamilton the musical looks great!
aaron burr the world was wide enough...
Phillip you would like it uptown, it's quiet uptown
Raise a glass!
Thats the kind of accuracy that won duels.
Old guns reload much more cool than modern guns now
Wow you really hit it!?!
Are long fingernails accurate for trappers?
Eric S Or he could be a classical guitar player.
Nice work. A shame the range is so noisey though. I just go out to the woods to shoot my flintlock, mainly to stay away from all the mag-dumping zombie slayers.
very fine shooting
Those hands and nails never seen an honest days work in their life !
I'm surprised that people still go to that range (Angeles Shooting Range, near Lake Terrace, CA). It used to be a nice public range, but they've done everything they could possibly do to make a visit there one of the most unpleasant shooting experiences one can ever get...
How is it bad? It's California so I'm surprised it's even there lol!!!
Don't break a nail.
It would be fun to see that pistol used to shoot an unopened 2 liter pop bottle from 20 to 25 yards away. That’s my favorite target to shoot from that distance with my Diana model 34 classic .22 air rifle using open sights and shooting H&N 16 grain hornet pellets. My girlfriend made a video of me doing that a month ago and I posted it on my channel
Cool story bro
Nice!!! I can't wait to get a pirate pistol.. nice shot at 50 yards
I was told the other day that if you keep a little space between the pan and the touch hole, that you will get a quicker big bang . Not as long delay. So I was told . Is this true? Great stuff mate
oy! my pistol!
How much does one cost???
That is pretty neat, didnt know how beefy those things were, that would be pretty funny though, you go out to the range everybody has their ar's and rifles and here you are with your musket and flintlock lol
Huh? Musket and Flintlock? It’s not a musket hence the rifling. But why say “Musket And Flintlock”
Does he have a musket there and a spare lock?
good shooting there Tex ! Mighty fine, mighty fine shooting indeed
great gun
Angeles shooting range! Yay
Saw that stamp on his hand and I knew it was Angeles immediately! I miss the old pistol range you can barely even see the pig anymore at the 110 line.
Dang thats an awesome range.
Looks like you have the prime charge perfect. Very good shooting.
Dude I’m blown away with your accuracy. What’s your secret!?
you better not miss. or you will be reloading through the whole gun fight
Affix bayonet and charge!!!!
That's why you used paper cartridges or had a pistol (or several) alongside your long gun.
@@johnmullholand2044 I'd just get kitted up like Blackbeard with 6 pistols strewn across my jacket haha
What is up with the lady hands?
Great video. I also see that you're at ASR. One of the best range in SoCal
hawkenrifles I couldn't have said it any better myself. Thank you for watching!
Man I love that sound, gotta get me one of those
So the reason why the bullet doesn't fall out is because it's packed in so tight
No it is magic
daa scrub
it has a patch of cloth around it holding it in.
That is insanely accurate for 50 yards with a flintlock
Hardly, for a flintlock rifle you could hit 300+yds.
I’ve hit a man sized target with my smoothbore flintlock from around 20-30yds.
Why use FFFg powder for the bullet chamber, and FFFFg powder for the pan? Why not use the same type of powder for both?
Nice hat dork bro;) I envy your abilities
I have the same weapon, except mine is caplock. Just got back rom shooting it abt 30 minutes ago
Quick reload perk is a must.
Why does it look like you have a ramrod under the barrel but it was not used? Nice gun.
Anyone ever mention to you not to load directly from the flask?
The war would be over before you finish reloading that
Good shooting
1:12 Trying to make popcorn at 3am in the microwave be like
Nailed it!
Why use all of those tools too put the bullet into the chamber? Another guy here on RUclips put a bullet in only using the ram rod, and it worked just fine.
Nice shooting
No wonder they still use swords in pirates of the Caribbean. Takes forever to reload
I can’t hit a plate from that distance with a Glock and this dude did it with ye olde pistol 💀
Don’t be a flash in the pan. Be ready if you are have a second pistol 😂.
Interesting how many click booms you had. Too much priming powder?
It's pretty common with flintlock designs. The powder in the priming pan takes a second to ignite the powder in the barrel.
just like a diesel engine, all that smoke looks bad ass!!
Brb my cat is barking
Are you using a 5/8" square flint or a 1/2" x 5/8" flint?
does the size of the flint brings any change
+Maaz hassan To put it simply, yes it does. However, there is some wiggle room. If your flint is grossly the wrong size, it won't function well against the frizzen.
So how do you like this pistol? I will be looking for a Flintlock pistol in the near future.
I have the same pistol and it's amazing in every way!!! However, whoever assembled it put the hammer washer in the wrong place so the hammer wiggled. My gunsmith caught that and put it where it should and now the hammer doesn't wiggle anymore!! It's fun to just look at as well. When people are checking out my pistols...this is the one that always gets them going....
You are the man
Bruh imagine Ona sword fight in the middle of the sea like pirates of Caribbean trying to reload this shit while being shot at 😨
Muito linda.
CH-THUNK!
[A few moments later]
'dink'
Sea of thieves update...I missed this one...
You're the boss!
If you wear enough cloth layers, the ball won’t penetrate. BUT it will break bone, hurt like a m-f’er, and knock you on your ass. It’s like being hit with a sledge hammer. It might not go through you, but the fight was over. And if you didn’t wear enough layers, it will tear up your flesh too.
I hate it when this is my only personal defence weapon
does this pistol have a rifled barrel?
I'm actually working on a story set in the 18th century and while I am aware that flintlock handguns were rarely used (maybe outside the sea at least) and were more or less a fashion statement, I wonder what kind of damage they could deal. I mean, let's say one of my characters shoots another straight in the back of his head: would the other guy go down with a round bleeding hole in his forehead the way modern hanguns work, at least in movies, or would it be messier (guess it shouldn't, this way or another it's just a single projectile but maybe these balls were somewhat less durable?)?
Are you stupid? Good god man. Flintlock pistols uncommon during the 18th century???? Are you insane!?
How could they be military pistols??? "Oh, wait, just need to put in next bullet..."
Very nice shooting. How do you like that Traditions pistol?
Damn good shot
Not sure about the hat but that was some impressive shooting
They made the flintlock pistol from fortnite into a real thing 😂😂😂
MightyDarkK please tell me you're joking
@@alilirara i had to do it to ya r/woosh
MightyDarkK first time I got wooshed but thank god
Hey so can someone please tell me why you need pillow ticking when loading a Flintlock musket cause during the American civil war they just needed to pour powder and ram the mini ball down and put a percussion cap on why is this gun different?
That’s not a musket. It’s a rifles pistol. Musket means smoothbore. BUT in the case of muskets ticking (wadding) was necessary to make a good snug fit while it shoots out the barrel to keep it from bouncing around whilst inside. In the case of Flintlock Rifles. Wadding was Necessary to help grip the rifling and guide the ball out of the barrel. In regards to the civil war.... the Minie Ball was hollowed out at the bottom (the skirt). And when the powder was ignited the pressure filled the skirt causing it to open up and be forcibly pushed against the rifling so no wadding was needed to grip the rifling and spin the projectile.
Nice. So with a matchlock do you still use priming powder.? Could using same amount of powder fire 2 rounds at same time?
How a matchlock rifle works is there is a piece of very fast burning rope and then everything else is the same. Burn the rope to fire
Preston Samson fast burning rope. What are you talking about. Fast burning??? Noooooooo its was Incredibly slow burning! So could be used for a longer time. Have you seen a matchlock
nice shotin were's this range at and what is the longist range you can shot
Cool videos bud, you in az?
you better believe it boa only in FRANCE..
Imagine needing to do more than just reload a gun
-this post was made by the mid-19's and 20's gang
I also have a 50cal Caplock in 51ins barrel
Kinda reminds me of One Piece anime
can anybody tell me the reason why some flintlock pistols don't have a ramrod equipped with them. I resently purchased a pistol like this.
because they are gay
Some small pocket pistols, or dueling pistols, presentation pistols and such wouldn't have a ramrod mounted on the gun, it would be in the case for the gun (as in the box containing the pistol, and all the accouterments to load and clean the gun).
But how do they do it so easily in assassins creed
Which AC? In AC3 it’s actually fairly accurate. In Black Flag it’s insanely unrealistic.
But in most cases people used paper cartridges and Smoothbores in war to speed up the process to around 30sec.
Did you have to go through the elongated reloading process each time you shot it?
Would it be the same for a Flintlock Rifle?
Could people load up multiple shots and fire repetitively?
(writing a book)
+AwesomenessManDude Yes. You have to go through the long reload process every time.
yea you can fire multiple shots. look up reapting flintlocks and such there a real beauty and incredibly rare
I didn't even consider those things. They are so rare, that they are basically unknown. Unfortunately, that probably doesn't make them a good candidate for your book.
+noahconstrictor100 yea thats true, probably depends what kind of book it is tho. but definitely true, you would think more people would make reproductions. so many people shoot black powder hell i know a guy who carries two flintlocks for self defense
Why? Hahahaha! I do love those things, though.
BEHIND THE YELLOW LINE!
Why is he/she putting some fabric in the barrel along with the ball?
The "fabric", or "patch", as it's called, encases the bullet and makes a hell of a snug fit. This is needed to build up the pressure inside the barrel...think of it like "resistance" holding the bullet in until the right amount
of pressure from the gases forcefully blow the bullet out. The patch seals the barrel and prevents gasses from escaping around the sides of the bullet, and that snugness helps twist the bullet against the rifling inside the barrel.
I have this exact model of flintlock, and it is amazingly fun to shoot! Now, ask yourself why he's using 3F powder to charge the pistol, and why it's a death sentence if you use 4F powder to charge but not to prime, why 2F powder still works, and why 1F powder is a no no....
Harrison Denton It sort of boost the weapon performances by trapping gaz. You can still fire a flintlock without it tough.
Where did you get all 20 tablets?
lil pump!!eeesskkeeetit
Tell all other guns to shut up and respect their grandpa
someone told me you can use vegetable oil or olive oil for those patches
Any ORGANIC oil will work. It may not be the BEST lube, but it'll work. Hell, so will plain ol" SPIT
@@tommykirk3403 It *may* have been organic a couple million years ago, but *now* it's a petroleum.
I was referring to any vegetable-based, or animal-fat based(such as tallow or lard) lubricant
not gonna lie i hear a shitload of gunfire and most of the hits are from a guy with a flintlock pistol.
So this what uk rappers mean when they say they keep that mf thang on them
long fingernails. Either this man plays guitar or has poor personal hygeine
