- This week I worked with veneer for the first time.
Rockler sent me a steamer a while back and i finally found a project to use it! Big Thanks to Rockler for Sponsoring this Project.
I founds a sheet of this stunning birdseye maple veneer and used some of the maple i had left over from the big table i built a while back.
some notes on bending veneer...it is very tricky!
if you want to try the ballon-trick, don´t leave it in there for too long otherwise your venner might get stockpatch.
same with the tape. make sure the veneer gets a lot of ventilation while covered in tape.
i hope you enjoyed this project!!

Music by Epidemic Sound (www.epidemicsou...)
After many attempts with glue and curved surfaces, I predict my end result would be me rage quitting with wet ripped veneer everywhere and half covered in glue. You are a patient woman with obvious skill. Thanks for making it look so easy.
yeah, this was truely a test of patience for me as well :)
Wow! What a surprise when the globe was turned on and the light shone through the veneer.
yeah, that was a cool moment
Such a warm glow. I love that you turned both rings out of 1 piece like that. Love to watch anybody use the lathe and not waste most of a piece of wood making sawdust. Well done!
Wife says: "Is that Laura?"
Me: "Yeah, how can you tell?"
Wife: "It's the music!"
really? that is so cool!
and it's true!
mine says the same...
All the best youtubers use Epidemic Sound for their music!
If I had Laura's skill level and her patience and diligence I might have tried cutting through the veneer overlap for a butt join reinforcing that on the inside with a strip of thin clear plastic with a clear glue to maximize the translucense of light shining through at the veneer's seam - but that would only be a small detail on an otherwise very good build. The production and build value is faultless. Very happy to have watched as invariably I am.
Way back in the 50s and 60s the BBC used to broadcast Interval Programmes to fill space between the morning kids programmes and the early evening stuff. They had woodworking, potters wheels, and such, all edited to music. Very calming. Your videos are 21st century version. Very nicely done, and this lamp is quite beautiful.
The glow through the veneer was perfect! Love this one!
Great presentation of the project; plus I like the honesty of a bandaged finger.
Another great project, Laura. You used some techniques that I hadn't thought of, like using sandpaper to trim the veneer. I admire someone who strives to keep it simple (and inexpensive). But I noticed you have a new band-aid. My son is an ER doctor, and he said I'm the most accident prone person he knows. I told him to watch your videos. Thanks for the ideas!
hahaha! yeah, i get a lot of comment about my busted hands. but i work with tools EVERYDAY...it would be a miracle if i didn´t get hurt every now and then. and so far i was lucky and only cut of a fingertip once ;)
That must have been shopping paradise at the veneer shop. I don't work with veneer really at all so it was cool to see the process. Thanks Laura
yeah, it was my first veneer project too. it is incredible to see all these beautiful wood veneers! a lot of potential!
Lovely job, lovely music, lovely ambiance, lovely Laura ... life can be lovely
:)
Never ceased to be impressed with your work... Excellent as always.
She did it again ! Excellent project.
Hello Laura, Very nice design elements used in the Veneer Lamp. You never fail to amaze me, the different types of projects and materials used. I like to make practical, sometimes for fun, things a person can actually use, light is good. Love your channel, really like the Album of the Week feature, and, of course, the projects. Happy to see your wearing your comfy Safety Glasses, make it a habit, best thing you can do. Thankyou for sharing your talent and skills. Work safe, be good, C.
That's gorgeous - the way the grain shows up with the lamp behind.
What a beautiful piece of functional art. Turned out great. Well done, Miss Laura. Troy
Gorgeous marbling on that wood! And well done on the lathework! Nice looking base. Simple, no-nonsense and functional.
Seeing as you've got a few spare veneers, I Can't wait till you get into pyrography. That'll really unleash the creative fury :)
Cheers, thanks for sharing Laura!
Beautiful as always Laura, I am continuously impressed with your design style and great craftsmanship ! The fact that you work so well in many mediums is awesome ! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.. Also looking forward to your meeting up with April and any collaborative projects !
Beautiful work, Laura. And again some great ideas (like the balloon).
thanks, andreas
Fine looking lamp. I really like the look of veneer shades on lamps or any light fixture where you want mood lighting or just want dim light sideways and full light down, like for a reading light on the headboard of a bed or sidetable. Veneer drives me crazy, though.
Great use of tape or "clamp on a roll". I use the blue or white painters tape. It isn't as sticky, so I wind up using twice as much, but as much trouble as I have with clumsy fingers sometimes, every little bit of help I can get is welcome.
I really enjoy this channel. Thank you for taking the time and bearing the aggravation of filming and posting.
Another amazing project.
I love the way the light enhanced the grain pattern.
Also, as always, the best music in all the videos I watch.
Thanks Laura &(and Epidemic)!
thanks eric!
Precioso trabajo Laura! Beautiful 👏👏👏
Very cool!
I never fully appreciate the internet time difference until I see a new video posted at 12:30am.
hahaha!
Well done again, Laura. Veneers can be deceptively tricky to work with, but you pulled it off with style! Such a warm light coming through the veneer... beautiful.
Very nice. Sleek design. Another winner, Laura!
Another illuminating video with Kaura Lampf!
Once again, style and elegance with a well thought out goal...well done
thanks, joe!
Very nice glow in the room much like stained glass really relaxing.
That's too bad about the glue seem. I love that you take a moment to show it though! Appreciate that even a master crafter let's us see that not everything is perfect!
Also, that steaming setup, brilliant.
Very nice warm light as a result of your efforts. Judging by your introductory remarks, you had a few learning experiences with the balloon technique and the tape. But considering you hadn't done it before, that's all about "learning by doing", which us how I learn too.
huh, the balloon was a great idea, you always seem to come up with smart little tricks to mark / hold stuff. nice one Laura.
Wow Laura! Love the lamp... and the ballon trick is genius!
thanks, mike!
Another beautiful work of art. Laura, you really are an artist, and a good one at that. Both with what you're building and how, as well as with how you make your videos. Thank you so much!
:) thank you!
Ich mochte das Video sehr! Great camera positioning and clarity. When you turned the light on the grain was a beautiful reveal.
Danke sehr
Super clever project and video. Honestly so enjoyable to watch.
Lampf
Haaa! That was good! Much props!.....Gus
Stunning lamp and stunning video... such a nice piece.
WOW, that veneer store is great. Elegant lamp, nice work, the Birdseye Maple has a warm glow. Thanks for the post
Gorgeous! There's no doubt you're very creative but the part with the balloon was asome, good job Laura!
cheers!
Very nice. Beautiful design and process.
Very pretty piece Laura. Nice work!
Beautiful - I really enjoy everything that you do - I love the way you separated the ring from the block - and then the balloon to hold the veneer in place - you are so clever! I also really enjoy your storytelling and video skills. Thank you.
thank you!!!
I am incredibly jealous of your skills and your shop!
Thumbs Up Big L!!! You are "The MAESTRO of Funky Fresh Film Phenomena!!!" Much Love to You and Lil' L! Have A Super Week!.....Gus

Awesome job, and what a great idea. You never fail to amaze me with your videos.
Thanks Laura
thank you, felix!
Wow that lamp is gorgeous! I got so excited when you turned it on, it instantly became even more beautiful. Cool construction too :D
Really nice design, like the clean look of the lamp. May have to try one.
Muy bonito !!!! Laura espectacular, que fácil lo haces todo, salud.
The steam capsule is a really nice idea. Good job
You have created a very beautiful shade thanks for the ideas
Very nice Laura, haven't considered veneer very much but now I see the light! Thanks for sharing, later, Murph
Wow Laura, that was great, you have inspired me to try to make one of these for my daughters' room.
oh awesome!
Wow you are just so creative Laura.
Sehr schöne Lampe, super gebaut!👍
This is perfect design result! Thanks for sharing and greetings from Czech republic, Laura!
That's really cool and shows off several of your many skills.
Super cool!! You're an inspiration Laura. Your videos are causing me to look at the things in my workshop a little differently. Great stuff Kid!! :)
The lamp looks great. Have a nice week
Годный абажур получился!
Good lampshade lamp turned out!
I really like that. I have built a few LED lights recently and have used both plastic and acrylic diffusers. I was trying to think of an option to bring a bit more cool. What a fantastic idea!!!
Love the design with the veneer and the light! Great inspiration. Thank you!
thanks!
That balloon move was pretty slick.
really impressive work i like the slight orange hue to the light when shining through the veneer
Wow its a wonderful lamp. I love your job.
My god , Laura , you are beyond awesome.
the way you edit your videos makes them so easy to watch.. very nice build as usual :)
thanks steve! it´s always cool to hear that all my work is appreciated!
Amazing what you can do with steam and a little patience...liked!
very beautiful lamp. You have to use non-heat emitting light bulbs because the high heat will crack the glue very easily.
Very Nice...You have a new sub here! I have been building projects for years with reclaimed wood and materials, every piece of wood has a unique story ready to be brought to life, I share that passion. The story you tell thru editing, music is very cool..Cheers :)
Great job Laura!
Beautiful job as always Laura. You bring it every Sunday!
Best one yet Laura!!!
Beautifully shot and a beautiful finished product.
SWEEEEEEEET ! i like it a bunch 👍👍👍
it's funny, doing what I do for a living and I've just made my first lamp last month. Lots of fun and hope to make more!
Lovely video as always Laura!
Just one advice for your own safety: Try to always place your tool rest as close to the thing you´re turning as possible!
By doing so you´ll minimise the risk of making your tool act as a lever arm against you and send itself flying through your shop.
Tool rest + work piece as close (and parallel) to each other as possible = lower risk for tools acting as trebuchets :)
For example at 1:58 I would have rotated my tool rest 90 degrees rather than keeping it at the side and sticking the chisel out as far as you did :)
Best wishes from Sweden! /Gustav
And those sleeves are awfully high up your wrist whilst turning.
Your editing is beyond beautiful! The lamp looks great, I however would explore other options on the joint where they overlap. Could have maybe stitched it together or make some sort of joint or connection to make it more interesting.
yes, there are a lot of more suffisticated ways to do this...but this was my first time working with veneer, next time will be better
Very imaginative creative project with a beautiful result. Congratulations!
Beautiful work Laura!
WOW! I want one! Nice editing and cool music. I couldn't help but think that the opening scene in the veneer shop would be your ideal material stash! Ah well, dreams are free.
Beautiful veneer. Love watching your process, regardless of the project. Super cool lamp!
WOW . . . you never cease to amaze !!!
thanks max!
Very nice! Love how the light shined through the veneer!
Beautiful, you are the only RUclipsr that can wake me up at 3am
haha, if that isn´t a cool compliment i don´t know what is :)
lovely LAMP .. GREAT VIDEOGRAPHY !!!
Wow Laura this is stunning in everyway! The design, materials and video production are amazing :)
:)
This is beautiful Laura! I've got some redwood burl veneer and have wanted to do this for ages, now I'm fully inspired to finally do it!
Awesome!! That turned out really nice. That idea with blocking the tube with the balloon though! Ha ha! Superb! :-D
Amazing how translucent wood is. Light comes through a bedroom door I hung, around a knot when the sun is full on it, silently beautiful if your there at the right moment.
Love it! Excellent job!
That steam pipe was cool!
Great video!
cheers!
such good flow in your videos, great music as well
O M G , thats a beautiful piece of art Laura, well done as always and thanks for sharing.
Brilliant, beautiful, surreal!
Vor so viel Kreativität kann ich nur meinen Hut ziehen :-))))))))
