    Ah yes the summer of 99. The period where the WWF undervalued the Rock, and tried to bury him in the mid card so Austin wouldn't look outclassed. Of course that didn't work out as he surpassed him by this point.

      +Lobos Jordan They were attempting to elevate Billy Gunn but it didn't work out because Billy Gunn's comedy gimmick prevented him for moving up further. He was also being used to elevated Triple H to main event level in the prior months which turned out to be successful obviously as Triple H dropped his DX gimmick, Billy Gunn on the other hand didn't.

      LChris6 Billy easily could've main evented : look , height , strength, athletic ability , a standard name & he had charisma. The whole butt shaking thing was just a way of having your own character & plus the females loved him heel or face. Easily could've been more than what he was. Road Dogg to tbh hell the whole DX. X pac was a underdog before Mysterio & Bryan lmaoo

      You are damn right man.. I finally found someone who could see through things.. They always tried to bury the rock out of jealousy and fear of him surpassing that paranoid Austin so they tried as hard as they could to make him look trash in the ring and give the worst booking a superstar can ever get let alone a top guy, to tarnish his image.. They wanted to elevate HHH on his expense.. Do you know that WM 16 main event was supposed to be a rematch of WM 15 but with Rock getting the victory this time.. soon as Austin saw things not getting his way he found it sufficient to have that neck operation, just so he won’t lose to the rock at WM 16.. Even Dave Meltzer reported that this was the original plan and that was in November 99 same month in which Austin ran away like a coward.. The Rock will always be greater than these political scums Austin and HHH

    Agree, looking back on it 1999 wasn't as great as every claims it to be. I mean just look at Wrestlemania 15. That was not a good mania.

    I don't blame Austin for not putting over Triple H then. It was a taste of his own medicine since Triple H and Shawn were trying to screw The Rock every way possible from 1997-1999.

    • @TheGreatOneIVisGod
      @TheGreatOneIVisGod 10 лет назад +4

      Id argue Austin buried far more ppl than the Kliq, he went far out of his way to lobby for god like pushing that made literally everyone on the roster look like shit.

    • @ttv_cards8133
      @ttv_cards8133 10 лет назад +4

      ***** I know Austin did the politics (especially in 2002) but Triple H had it coming to him after he and Shawn were holding everyone back in that company. I don't blame Austin one bit he's a living legend and never should've let Triple H take his top spot he wasn't deserving of it only made it because of The Kilq and because he married Stephanie he was always an average performer.

      THEAW3SOM3BOSS3
      I agree with everything you said about HHH but Austin buried Rock more than HBK ever did. He refused to drop the title to him on 2 separate occasions. Not only that but nobody benefited more than Austin by having Rock turned heel late 98, having short ass title reigns, and never holding the title as a face in 98 or 99, and short reign again in 01!!!!!

      ***** Totally agree, as much as I like Austin he tried to screw over The Rock every way possible, which was bullshit since Rock was ready to be the top guy around 99 Austin was being a dick. But I do remember HBK trying to ruin Rock's career and have his buddy Triple H take his spot.

      True imo that only further cements Rock as the undisputed GOAT bc hes the only top guy who didnt try to bury everyone and get himself booked like god. Vince has always rewarded top guys who were total dicks and tried to bury others bc he loves when guys "fight" for there spots

    That was a Dick Headed thing of Austin by not putting over HHH that night. HHH not winning that night made HHH look kinda dumb in 1999. This would have been so cool that 1998 HHH wins the IC Title and then 1999 HHH wins the WWF Title but that didn't happen.

    There's a few things I liked about 1999. The Rock is my favourite so it was nice that that year he was more of a main-eventer than a midcarder (compared to 98). His feud with Mankind was awesome and so was The Rock N Sock connection. Not to mention the debt of Smackdown- a show named after him! Triple H being a top heel was good- enjoyed his feud with Austin and McMahon at the end of 1999. Also liked that the Dudley Boyz, Y2J and Chris Jericho made their debuts that year.

    Same thing for me Schlegdaddy, 1999 was a bit strange from a Fan Standpoint. The WWF & WCW were still good, specially in the first half of the year, but the the PPV's (exeption Spring Stampede 1999) were not that good. Also strange was from a Fan Standpoint that ECW was getting more and more Fans and they had become a real strong No.3 in 1999, but their business was not that good and their loss of Talent/Blood if you will started here. And yes Jeff, this PPV was a good example where you can see that the WWF had tooo much Attitude..

  • @QuackMamba34

    Austin and Triple H seemed to have a lot of backstage heat with each other. As big of an Austin fan as I am it was dumb at the time for him to refuse to put Triple H over and just have Mankind win the belt for no reason.

    I sort of liked Summerslam 1999. It's not my favorite Summerslam but it's something I've enjoyed watching when I was a kid. 1999 wasn't my favorite of the Attitude Era but it sure as hell beats anything WWE do today.

    I agree this show was so lame.
    Mankind winning pissed me off because I knew Triple HHH would win it the next day.
    Although keep in mind Austins neck was causing him alot of pain at this point and I think Vince was trying take the belt of him because it.

    I actually never knew about the finish of this SummerSlam being Austin's idea until recently and it made me lose a bit of respect for him. That's HBK's game. Triple H's game. Austin and Rock were the two guys I could count on to not be involved in holding other guys back and playing stupid politics.

    • @TheGreatOneIVisGod
      @TheGreatOneIVisGod 10 лет назад +7

      Actually its well documented Austin tried his hardest to hold everyone down. Austin was suppose to drop the title to Rock at SS 98 but not only did he refuse and forfeit the title, he refused to even lose to him in the tournament. Not only that but after Rock won the title Austin came back out to totally bury the living fuck outta the new champ and make him look like complete shit. Its not by chance that Austin lost to literally everyone but Rock from 97-01 Austin refused to lose to Rock every time it was suggested

    • @YozoraHeart
      @YozoraHeart 10 лет назад +4

      ***** It definitely hasn't been lost on me that The Rock only ever pinned Steve Austin at Survivor Series 2001 and WM19. But since they've always described the other as being such a great friend, I never thought it was because Stone Cold was a cunt. I thought Rock was just a victim of circumstance in those cases.

    • @TheGreatOneIVisGod
      @TheGreatOneIVisGod 10 лет назад +5

      *****
      Rock was always to naive to notice everyone was trying there hardest to bury him during that AE. I dont count the SS 01 bc it was a tag and Austin really had no choice, also it was Austin who demanded he turn back face when the plan sense right after WM 17 was he stay heel and drop the title to HHH at WM 18. Austin was the biggest dick and constantly buried everyone. I can name a billion times he buried everyone on the roster to make himself look like god

    • @lchris6997
      @lchris6997 9 лет назад

      +Jay Gatsby Where did you hear about the Survivor Series 1998 one?!? He was always supposed to drop the belt at Breakdown, for that to be possible what you were saying that meant Austin would've retained against Undertaker and Kane and since he had already beat both of them Austin needed to lose in order for Undertaker and Kane to stay strong.

    Just rewatched it for the first time in years as I go through the attitude era plus wcw. Very mid show and 1999 definitely feels like the weakest calendar year of the attitude era, but it’s still great.
    My main highlights were the Hardcore title match, Debra’s outfit, the beginning of the tag turmoil match with the Hardy’s and E&C, Shane’s table spot, and Shamrock having his last notable match before leaving shortly after this ppv.
    Worst parts were the women’s title match(poor Ivory did the best she could lol, at least she was looking hella fine as always), and HHH not winning the World Title. Definitely should have been his crowning moment and not the next night like they did but whataya gonna do? The match was still exciting.

    Honestly, I found myself enjoying the tag team turmoil match. And while I can see your point about it probably being better suited to television than to a pay per view, I can also see kind of why they put it here instead. On television, they would have had to either A. run the match during commercials like nitro used to, or B, cut it down severely to fit between commercial breaks. Not so on PPV, they could take the time to show it to both the live fans and the PPV audience in it’s entirety, the story of the first team entering making it all the way through four other teams, fighting like hell to win their shot, tired and worn down only to run into a wall at the end with the last team to enter, the Acolytes. Despite the acolytes getting the win, that team who endured so much actually got over in that match. In my opinion that is.

    1999 was the year I finally got cable. Before that I would rent all the PPV's from the local video store. Hate all you want on WM15, but since that was my first live PPV, it'll always be the most special. I can still hear JR's voice: "THE RATTLESNAKE RULES. THE RATTLESNAKE RULES AGAIN!"

    SUMMERSLAM? MORE LIKE SUMMERSHAM like Y2J said.
    I actually liked this show though. That hardcore Al Snow vs. Bossman match is very fun to watch and my favorite. I loved those hardcore matches where they went everywhere and you don't see that anymore unfortunately. They even left the arena and went to the local bar to fight. This show was also one of the first DVDs i got. It had a cool extra where the 3 competitors in the wwe title match all did a separate commentary and you could hear their point of views of the match. I liked it.

It was happening in 1998 1999 too. was kinda dumb lookin back. Undertaker/Kane story was stupid. The. Then back to Austin' 0:02 0:02 WWF title going from. Austin. Then kane then back to stone cold. The next night on raw. Ii was always happening. Wresting was always stupid at times. The. Stupid nonsense when. Triple H and shawn michaels same thing too. And if shawn Michaels wasn't hurt after. Mania 14 guess what? Triple H wouldn't not been on top at all. Fact so. Shawn michaels held people back too. Yes. It's truth. This whole thing about. Triple H holding people down. Then. Cena. They got that from. Hunter and. Shawn. Fact. It shows Today look at all the real guys. Now it's stupid. Because all these jobbers everywhere now. That's why things are bad today. Fact. Years later it shows a bunch of excuses ain't changing anything. Learn how to deal with it. Back then it was the same way too. Wcw did it too with. Hogan. Truth hurts. They did it for years. Hogan's run was a disaster at times too. It was. Deal with it. All these things today are the result of this policies now. That's why things are so bad now. All the backstage crap. Wresting is dead now. Think about it. All the stupid things here. All the rumors have ruined things too. Triple H is right. Fan's ruined their own fun half of the times too. Hypocrites. It started here.
