Classic rock band Kansas guitarist Rich Williams tells the story of the band's 70s hit Dust in the Wind and how Kansas songwriter Kerry Livgren and the band learned some finger picking exercises from a guy and years later Kerry's wife told him he should turn it into a song because it was so beautiful and distinct. Kerry was unsure it would work but brought it to the band and BOOM it was amazing. The band loved it and recorded it and it became their only top 10 hit and one of the most played radio rock hits ever with a perfect vocal from lead singer Steve Walsh. Развлечения
One of my favorite Kansas songs reminds me of all the great times I had back in the summer of 1978
Me too. I was 22 in 1978. What a great time to be alive - musically and more. Growing up on Southern California beaches- Oh boy, those were magical days for me.
Kansas was one of my favorite bands, I saw Kansas in concert 2 times in the late 70s, at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh!
Was 19 in summer of '78. My memory of that summer was working at Great Adventure and hearing the song "Baker Street" EVERYWHERE! Hearing it today, I immediately go back to that summer.
@@wiz4020Was there also!
Love that summer!
I was 13 when Dust In the Wind came out and I was in awe. Such a beautiful song.
It is a hopeless song ! Listen to the lyrics ! 🤔
@@markreeves2491 I've heard the lyrics hundreds of times and I know them by heart. I still think it's a beautiful and relatable song. Death happens to us all.
@stephanieredden8861 I'm well aware that death happens to us all ,but life isn't a hopeless journey as the song "Wayward Son" tells us ! Yes, this mortal life ends , but another "eternal" life awaits us !
@@markreeves2491 Yep
The guy’s wife was right. What an amazing piece of playing and the whole song is art.
Dust in the Wind is one of the most haunting songs of all time. And yes the guitar picking is so beautifully orchestrated in this song. We are all dust in the wind on the end but in the meantime, Kansas, you gave us some awesome music. Hugs from Chuck in NC
“ in the end “ as opposed to “on the end “ Yeah these things do things on their own !? OOPS “ I ROBOT - “ Random Bits of Information “ The AGE of “ A . I . “ Elon- YOUR SKYNET AND ‘AI ‘ !?!?!? And the 🐑 SHEEP FOLLOW ALONG BLNLINDLY ! 🤔😫😯😧
I took Rich and his son fishing out of Key West back around '92. I have a pic of him kissing a barracuda!
I still remember SNL playing this song with tribute seens of John Belushi after he died.
The only song i know how to pick. Its a breeze and it can get you hooked.
*I also can’t resist trying to sing… “I close my eyes…” after hearing myself i shut up.
😂 I'm laughing with you, not at you..... I do the same thing! 😁
Was raised on Kansas among many other rock bands. A couple of months ago I had the opportunity to attend a Kansas concert. One of the best
Concert bands ever experienced. Don’t ever miss the opportunity.
As I've written below other uploads about this song, "Dust in the Wind" is the one that anybody can listen to. My own mother is no Kansas fan, but she adores this song.
Yeah, love this song. Never really heard much about this band in Australia but just because of this one song, I would buy the album it's on. Actually, what album is it on, and is it good? Is it all a similar type feel on the whole album?
It's from *Point of Know Return,*@@titmusspaultpaul5.
@@titmusspaultpaul5Kansas is a rock and roll band from the Great Plains state of, Kansas in the middle of the continental United States. They feature a unique sound, especially for their time in the 1970s, which combines acoustic and electric guitars, acoustic and electric piano, electric bass guitar, drum set and their identifying sound, the electric fiddle. They had success early in their career with this tune “Dust In The Wind”, as well as “Carry On Wayward Son”, “Point Of Know Return” and a minor hit in the 1980s, which I enjoy called, “Play The Game Tonight”. Dust In The Wind is very subdued and beautiful when compared to their more typical sound, which is definitely energetic rock and roll, a bit loud, but they had a very unusual and sophisticated songwriting style. It’s not a deafening kind of rock and roll, but I would consider it to be accessible and enjoyable for most listeners. The band was known for their outstanding vocal abilities with beautiful harmony singing, thoughtful lyrics and first rate musicianship. I liken them to another very popular 1970s group known as Boston, which you may have heard of. Very high quality music, not offensive at all, with a rock and roll/country/bluegrass style. Carry On Wayward Son is probably my favorite Kansas tune, and I think it captures the essence of who they are musically. Worth a listen, in my humble opinion. Cheers. 👍
I use the song Dust in the Wind to plug why I like the flat earth theory. Otherwise if the earth is round, then we are all just Dust in the Wind.
The song is 100% about Reincarnation.... Don't get more Demonic than that
I was born in 1978. My Mom said that she could feel me move everytime this song came on. Enough that she ended up buying the record. I love that song still so much to this very day.
I had the privilege of meeting Kerry years ago when he lived in Georgia. Spent a couple of days at his ranch, went to a plantation dinner club and saw his studio. We traded old road stories, from days gone by. All those platinum albums hanging on the wall over his huge fireplace were a sight to behold. A kinder, gentler, more humble man, you will never meet. I treasure those memories. For me, Kansas is in my top five of all time.🎸😍🇨🇦
I have seen Kansas 8 times. Phenomenal musicians and magnificent performers.
I am green w envy!!!!
I saw Kansas with Loverboy at Allen Field House, last show of the "Play On" tour if I'm not mistaken. It was biblical.
I saw them at a bar called skitzos in outside sioux falls. They started playing this song and a thick fog 6 feet deep came accrossed the road and thru the crowd. Full moon and a gravel pit with 60 foot high piles next door. The fog went accosted their bottoms making them look like the pyramids. It was so incredible and totally mother nature doing her thing. I wonder what the band members thought of it.
@@ronskancke1489 I have Steve's old C-3 in my basement. I bought it from Clay Schell, their road manager, in Atlanta. Late 70's. Wish I'd been able to meet Steve, but it was not to be.
Dust in The Wind
The woman was right once again. Hpw often do we hear about the 1 input from the a lady makes a hit song!
I play this song to warm up my fingers and any where I play it people gather around hoping I'll burst into song, OH! those poor people didn''t realize I'm a guitar player not a singer lol
Start Singing.. Now🤩
Very interesting story! Thanks for sharing!
“Dust in the Wind” by Kansas is one of the very few songs I replay just to hear the intro over and over again.
The other songs that come to mind are Harem Scarem’s “Something to Say” and Eagles “Hotel California”.
That same origin story probably took place nine years earlier when the Beatles were in India and John Lennon learned that same Travis picking style from Donovan. I imagine “Julia” is the song he wrote for the same purpose as when Kerry wrote what ultimately became “Dust in the Wind”.
Life in the fast lane was a warm up lick Joe Walsh turned into a song.
I keep forgetting Joe Walsh was in the Eagles because Henley and Frey always did the vocals and Joe did pretty good vocals,, his lead guitar skill was imo better than Frey and Joe's lead solo or James Gang stuff was A LOT better for better riffs more and better licks and better change style.. Frey wasn't bad but he was a lot better at doing top 40 single pop tunes Henley too but Joe's stuff soars more,, I think Henley and Frey did seven bridges road but meadowlands was pure sublime, I'm out here in the meadow, part of an old Stone wall, sent here because he said so, waiting around to fall,, kind of like a mix between Bob Dylan and Dante or something...
There you go again - now give me that J
Same with Sweet Child O' Mine
I know, it's crazy, but true. And what a lick it is. It's all about the timing. Took me two weeks to really perfect it on my Stratty
@@micnorton9487 Um, you're forgetting a fretmaster in the Eagles at that time named Don Felder. The dude can really rip it up. Frey was not really any kind of guitarist; more of a lyricist. Joe was brought in to give them balls. And he did so wonderfully. The Felder/Walsh trade-off's are masterfull, none more so than on the song Hotel California. But they've since given Felder the boot because of monetary squabbles and in favor of Deacon Frey...give me a freaking break. I think the kid finally quit. Good riddance.
I saw Kansas in concert early last year. Amazing. Music came alive from my youth. I’ve teared up at songs from three artists. Kansas’ Dust in the Wind was one.
I still recall the funeral of ol’ Blue in Old school.
He looks glorious!
YOU'RE MY BOY BLUE! You're my boy.
"I closed my eyes
only for a moment, [and]
then the moment 's [is] gone."
Excerpt from the song
"Dust in the Wind"
played by the band Kansas.
"Close." You're welcome.
I enjoy Kansas... Dust in the Wind is my favorite of their songs.
Beautiful song. “Dust In The Wind.”
One of the first songs I learned to pick. I love Dust in the wind. It's simple perfection yet so beautiful!!! ❤
I love seeing how legendary songs were made this is great
Guitarist do your exercises. Awesome riff, just brings back joy and memories.
Kansas has 2 of my favorite songs of all time!!
Loved that song! It was great. I played it over and over. One of the first I recorded with my tape recorder. Had such a haunting melody.
One of my all-time favorites.
One of the BEST songs in the 70's! I close my eyes when the violin 🎻 part starts, and it transforms me back to the era......
Heard Don Henley same the same thing about Mike Campbell (Heartbreakers) who had written the music for Boys Of Summer, which is a fucking beautiful song. Henley said that he heard that and asked Campbell about it. Mike said oh shit, I just warm up with that, been playing it for years. So Henley said can I put some words to it? And that is how magic like Dust in The Wind or Boys of Summer happens
I was playing a casino years ago and Kansas was playing the showroom. The sound guy got us in to see them. I got to stand by the stage next to Rich’s rig and watch them. What a great band.
Turned out to be one of their best songs
Sweet Child o’ Mine by Guns ‘n’ Roses and Goodbye by Night Ranger also both started out as finger warm-up riffs. I’m guessing there were many more out there too.
truth!
Black Water by The Doobie Brothers.
Thunderstruck by ACDC
I love Goodbye by NR
Sweet Child O mine is,,stolen,, from an Australian 80's Band. . .
I know Rich Williams and I'm from Topeka, Kansas as well. He's a great guy.
Kudos to Rich Williams of Kansas. An superior guitar player. Great chops and creativity as a musician. He has been a positive influence to me and my playing. Thanks Rich.
Professor you rock
Kansas opened for Heart
They were phenomenal they stole the show just amazing dust in the wind classic
Saw them @ Dallas West End, it sure doesn't feel like it was thirty years ago. 🤠✌
KANSAS has blessed so many lives through their music, including mine. To make something that was a finger exercise into something so magical is who KANSAS is. Thank you, and God bless you. Love you all. Chief
I cant believe this is how they made the song! Thank God they listened to her. Imagine if it never got made
That happen to Joe Walsh when he was in the Eagles His warn up exercise on the guitar was the opening riff that they used on " Life in the fast lane "
One of the greatest songs ever written!
Kansas is a American icon! They have influenced millions around the world!
This is the song that got me to learn fingerpick. So… his exercise became my muse. The song is so lovely. The way the vocals mingle with the guitar… really, there was no other option than for this song to become a classic.
My dad passed away a couple of years ago and I think of him when I hear it ❤😢 it's a beautiful song 🎵 and I miss my father everyday ❤❤❤😊
I like the live interviews, Good job. Thanks for promoting the times of my youth when music was real, not tricks and computers. Its also so interesting to hear musicians describe how their tunes were written.
By far their best ever and one of my all-time favorite tunes.
Love the song and the Band
My daughter learned Dust in the Wind on her guitar & it’s so beautiful! Beautiful music in that song, beautiful song!! I love to hear her play it! She loves Travis picking & loves music. Great job!
You're my Boy, Bluuuuuuue!!
Ha!🤣
I knew this comment would appear!
One of my friends & fellow musicians of 20 years just passed from a heart attack a week ago & whenever we worked on ANY "project" (as he called them); he would require this song played & sung by me🎶🎸❤🙏
His family requested I play this at his Celebration of Life😳🎶🎸💔
I have been trying to get all the way through it lately, but it's tough🤔🎸
SO...I decided to just insert that phrase into the performance to break up the high probability of breaking down mid-song😉🎶🎸✌
He would chuckle if he was there...but, ya know🤔🎶🎸
Some may "get it"😉🎶🎸
Old-School is a great flick😎👍
Kerry Livgren is my boy, humble, brilliant and didn’t even realize it until the rear view. Just good people and an inspiration too an old geetar picker like me.
Heard the guitar and got the chills. Great memories.
Kansas is one of my favorite bands...all their songs are great.
One of my late Moms favorite songs, she just loved the violin...RIP mom 19th Feb 2020.
Killer song. I remember my girlfriend gave me this album when it came out. I loved it.
Actually bought the music and sang it back then too.
I saw them 50 years ago. Tight and professional.
An all time classic. “Dust in the Wind” only went to number 8 on Billboard Hot 100 in 1978. Hard to believe it wasn’t a Number 1 hit.
Dust in the wind that’s blowing my flowing hair🤌 what a gorgeous song❣️
My senior class in high school was an apathetic mess. We lost Spirit Week; even the Freshmen did better then us. Dust In The Wind was voted to be our Class Song. Honestly, it's a great song, but with its depressing lyrics, that pretty much summed us up. Don't blame me, I voted for Frank Zappa's Dinah-Moe Humm.
We had the choice between a Taylor Swift song, some early 2010s country song and Good Ridence by Green Day. Over like 80% of our senior class voted for Good Ridence. A month later when graduation comes by they played that country song instead due to Billy Joel Armstrong whispering fuck when he messes up the first chord. I was damn fuming over it
I freakin loathe Dynamo Humm.
@Dawn Sutton Exactly! It's a disgusting song. But, it evokes a visceral reaction in the listener. That's why I like it. Our class colors were also light green and dark green. I voted for beer bottle brown and Alcupoco gold. Nobody liked that suggestion, either.
Watch out where the huskys go
Better than ours. My class chose The Way We Were. I hate Barbara Streisand!
Kerry introduced this song as his "retirement plan" at a show in Topeka :-)
One of the greatest songs of all time
One of my favorite songs EVER!!!! Dust in the wind!!!!
Kansas, a band that should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
KANSAS , one of my all time favorite bands of all time !
Leftoverture, Point of Know Return ,and Monolith, what incredible 3 albums. TRIFECTA!
AMAZING TALENT !!!
One of the greatest songs ever!
Dust in the Wind, one of the best songs ever❤
Summer of 78 was such a great fun. It was my sister’s favourite song.
Freaking Awesome
My twenty-something kids LOVE Kansas. One day, I had been listening to a playlist with Carry On Wayward Son, and as I walked into the garage where my daughter was working on some shelves, I yelled “NO!!”, and she immediately started singing the guitar solo and doing air guitar for the song. We both laughed, and I jokingly hugged her and said “My work as a parent is done.” We still laugh about it on occasion.
Dust In The Wind was the first fingerpicking piece my guitar teacher came up with back in about 1983 or so. I can still play a passable version of it. So many good memories!! Thanks for sharing!!😬😎
I love Dust in the Wind❤️
The opening lyric of "I close my eye..." Makes so much more sense now.
Dust In The Wind, my fav Kansas song.
Kansas. A incredible band .saw them twice in 2 years. Indescribable!.
Kansas, the best band I never saw live.
Wow. Cool back story. Thanks Rich 👍
This song takes me back to third grade at Bel Ayr elementary in Dartmouth NS and my music teacher Mr Grant had us sing this for choir. Haunting song.
If you realy listen to this song, it's so true.
One of the few songs that are lasting the test of time.
Dust in the wind Point of no return. My favorite.1978
I saw them in the early 80s, it was outside the wind was blowing the violinist’s beard and that guitar was sweeeet! Great memory ❤
Hoooweee hearing Kansas again …. I’m transported to 1977-78 at my buddy Paul’s house where we listened to Dust in the Wind as well as the entire LeftOverture album at least 20,000 times
Kansas...LONG LIVE KANSAS!
I love this Jam. Reminds me of my youth.
The first fingerpicking song I ever learned!
I love Dust in the Wind. I have to sing along every time.
Dust In The Wind, I always found it depressing but I freaking love the song.
You can thank the Travis Picking Style exercises for this one. Miracles Out Of Nowhere has that kind of picking in there, too.
Just noticed the Front Line Assembly in the table. Rock on.
I remember seeing KANSAS in their prime..... one of the BEST CONCERTS EVER.....RIP Robbie
Thank you for adding reels! I love your videos but I’m too busy to watch right now. I take a five minute brain break, and there is a little music gem!
I have that man's wife to thank for why my favorite song exists
Really great guys and great musicians!
Love "Dust in the Wind"! ❤
I was lucky enough to see Kansas in those clubs in
Des Moines back in the day, sweet!
Love the song. Classic Kansas.
All of my guitar students learn this song for Travis picking. Then Freight Train, Deep River Blues, Blackbird, Nine Pound Hammer. The basics never change.
"Dust in the Wind" is one of my favorite songs. =)
Genesis's my number 1 and Kansas was right there as my all time bands of all time!
Thats the way it goes sometimes. Inspiration is a fickle muse
No freaking way I didn't know that was going this way I love that song. Thank you
LOL, that's how I learned Dust in the Wind. I was working on fingerstyle patterns and was just doing A chord exercises, and I realized it was nearly Dust in the Wind.
