As a music therapist, music professor and music teacher (as well as trained singer), Charlamagne said something that I agree with. Chaka, please don’t let some random list by some folks that probably weren’t born when you were out there making history upset your spirit. The problem with social media and pop culture - they are not music historians that understand music history. Chaka and many others paved the way for this generation. (In the commercial space). Without you, there would be no them!

Chaka is on point! As a vocalist and writer. Chaka comes from a generation where talent was everything! Talent was how you were discovered. When MJB came along talent somehow took a back seat. I clearly remember when Mary first came on the scene and every vocalist I knew personally or in the industry was saying she couldn’t sing. However, MJB has stepped up her vocals over time but she not better than Chaka .

In addition to that she has been one of the most successful and influential artists plus not only that, she's had longevity. For those who don't know, in music there are things called notes. Seven typical sounds labeled A thru G. On a traditional piano there are seven groups of those 7 sounds. Of each, there are things called Naturals, Flats, and Sharps.
Imagine Stairs. Each stair is a Natural. Now imagine from each stair there are two little steps that come. One that leads halfway to next step and another that leads halfway down. Half step going up is sharp. Half going down the stairs is flat. If you're standing on one of the half step, you're not standing on the designated stair.
What Chaka is saying when you sang the song...your voice was not standing where the song requires you. It requires you on the Natural.
Many great musicians know when their voice/instrument's sound is standing where they are supposed to.
Mary J has a great history of not singing the natural. Great history!
Many of her biggest hits were written by producers who know she does this and write songs where she can be flat.

Mariah also has a legendary career, and vocally can out-sing Chaka if we are comparing them at their best. “Sweet Thang” and “ I’m Every Woman” stay in the same pocket, no vocal flexibility, but amazing tonality. We are talking about a singer who can whistle all over Chaka. I do not believe Mary, nor Adele should be ranked higher.

Some of y'all may be too young to appreciate the range that Chaka Khan had. There's no way in hell Mary should have been over Chaka Khan as greatest singers. Shaka is definitely in the top 10 probably the top five. Even being high at the concerts now she still got range at her age. I can't say the same for some of the others probably on that list.

Even singers with phenomenal range like Mariah (Minnie Ripperton comes to mind) had a hard time becoming icons in the way that Aretha, Gladys, Chaka, Dionnne, etc did. Also, people weren’t as amazed by “shiny objects” back then, so I don’t think the high note trick she does would have had the same impact. Again, an old man’s opinion.
