I swear to god, ive watched so many videos trying to fully wrap my head around how compression works. and you just made it completely clear for me in less than 2 minutes. Fantastic video, thank you so much.
@@OffTheBeatMusic I've saved several of your videos for future watching. I'll let you know if there's any gaps that I'm burning to learn more about. Thanks!
Thanks Andre! I probably wouldn't use it on the master itself as it can destroy certain frequencies. Instead you could put in on a return track and send it to whatever tracks or groups you like 😊
OTT is kinda funny, it is technically a cheat to make most music sound “good” but I still wouldn’t recommend people who are just starting to make music to use it since I think what makes it so powerful should be learned so you can tweak it even better. Not all sounds go with OTT and for that I think people should whip out a clean slate multiband compressor (preferably with more than 3 points) And experiment with it
this is not how compressors work. compressors work like a robot that turns the volume knob automatically for you, this means that the whole signal gets turned down, and not what just above the threshold. once the signal goes above the threshold that is when the robot looks at what is the amount of ratio you wanted, delays itself for the duration of the attack time, then it reduces the volume of the signal for the duration of the release time. that is why sometimes you can have too much compression.
Hey Rusin Brusin thanks for the comment. I could be wrong but I'm 99.99999999% sure that a compressor will only turn down the signal that is above the threshold. A compressor is designed to reduce the dynamic range of a signal. Either make the quieter parts louder, or the loud parts quieter. This allows a clip that has loud transients to have those loud transients lowered in volume while not effecting the volume of the quieter parts, giving a more consistent signal. It's a crucial step to keep the track consistent in volume and allow the master track limiter to not be pushed too hard or distort.
Great video. Why do the bands on the first multiband compressor you showed overlap? Also, if OTT is compressing all three bands, why does it sound different from a standard compressor? And why is it called "over the top"? Also, why does OTT bring out so many harmonics?
You can change where the band's start and end if you don't want any overlap. You can also change to a steeper cut to help with less overlap. The reason a multi and compressor sounds different is because of the upwards compression. Abletons normal compressor uses downwards compression where the multi and uses upwards. This turns everything up that's below the threshold. I like using this to help emphasize the quiet harmonics in a sound without losing any dynamics that come from normal compression. Hope that answers your questions 👍

Cleanest and most straightforward Compression and OTT tutorial I've seen on RUclips, keep it up!
Thanks brother!! Compression is a hard one to understand so Im happy it's helped!! Any other stuff you need to know? I can chuck it in future videos

i realize it's pretty off topic but does anyone know of a good place to stream new tv shows online ?
@Kevin Boone I watch on Flixzone. Just google for it :)
@Kevin Boone Lately I have been using Flixzone. You can find it by googling :)
I really love that Z31 300ZX headlight poster/painting behind you! Also thanks for the tutorial!
Thanks man! That poster is the cover of 'Hi this is Flume' mixtape
I came to know how to use OTT, and you help me understand compression and when to use multiband compression, appreciate it
Awesome brother!! Glad you found it useful!!
Lovely stuff. I avoided learning OTT because of the horror stories but I finally caved in. Thanks for a great video
It is such a powerfull effect if used correctly! Glad you got something from the video :)
Horror stories? (I'm assuming there are there examples of people abusing/overusing OTT?)
Thanks for nice clear explanation and suggestion on how beginners can use OTT!
Such a simple and straightforward explanation and demo definitely learned something thank you!
Very informative and professional. This deserves 2K+ Likes
Great explanation of OTT and how it works👍
Thanks Sean! Going ro try do a few more like this so stay tuned :)
Very clear and detailed explanation, thanks a lot
Excellent vid! Thanks!
amazing explanation!
Amazing tutorial, well explained, thanks! Subbed!
Thx for showing all the details about OTT💯
Thanks! That was almost too easy!
Super well explained thanks for that 🤩

good explain, i like your chanel new SUB
Thanks Steve! Appreciate the support brother 👊
Great explanation! And how about use OTT in master chanel?

How do you install the OTT into Ableton? I downloaded OTT xfer and cannot find out how to open/add the program to Ableton.
Dude, I like you.
Haha I like you to bro! 👊
mine looks different. Everytime i add a plug in i doesnt pop up in abelton but like a different tab. and i dont have all the same knobs? help pls

6:43 isn't this exactly a multiband compressor's definition?!

When not to use ott?
Fast forward to 4:30 to actually learn what OTT is but not actually learn what it stands for?
OTT stands for “Over The Top” because it’s such extreme multiband compression, hence the name.
