The many uses of a Compressor: Glue compression, Sidechain, OTT, De-esser... - Sound Design Theory

- Here's what I could gather about compressors in the shortest format possible. Absolutely essential for mixing in most situations, it is also incredibly useful for sound design.
It can reveal the grit and texture hidden in any sound as well as tame the harsher frequencies.
This video is my attempt at making a comprehensible overview of this multi-faceted effect.

And suddenly it all makes sense. Not only is this the best explanation I've ever encountered but you also tell us exactly how to use this. Only someone who 1. has a vast amount of knowledge and experience and 2. can put himself in the position of a beginner is capable of delivering all that is to be known in a nutshell like this. Hats off!
facts! this video is so helpful
The visuals in this video really help with understanding how the compressor works. Like most of the comments I've watched a ton of compression videos and didn't really grasp the full detail at the end. This finally makes it so much more clear. Thank you! 🏆
Hands down this is one of the best videos I've seen on the subject! Great info and great presentation! 👏 Clear, concise and to the point
I agree too
this is the best compresssor explenation that ive ever seen on youtube
Thanks :)
Its really cool you bring up the amount knob. One of my uni courses was avonguard music and I used that trick to phase one of my tracks but also showed it didnt actually work with any other plugin. After doing a lot of digging and experimenting I came to the answer that amount doesnt have a bypass trigger coded in like dry and wet does if at 0 (to save on cpu usage). It acts more like say a good analog vst or copies. Even if the plugin isnt doing anything it will still send the sound through its wiring which still edits the sound. (ott doesnt actually edit the sound though so I believe because its a popular effect they brought it over from older versions that didnt have the dry/wet modern programming. And either they couldnt get the new code to work or forgot there was even a difference.). All I can say is this is a very unknown property. None of my uni prof knew about it including the 'bold guy' who does Ableton tutorials sometimes and an ex abby road enginner. So probs on you for also discovering it. Never thought I'd see it in a youtube tutorial. shows you've really messed around with everything and know your stuff
Thank you :o
Great series! I learned a lot and will come back to these videos in the future. Thank you!
i wanted to add a note to the last thing you said about OTT, you said "even when the amount is on 0, it will have an effect. i think it has to do with how the bands are separated" thats actually correct, OTT's bands are not in phase with each other, this causes the crossovers to phase with eachother creating artifacts
Thanks for the clarification!
I'm truly impressed! Your teaching skills are on a high end level! Amazing video! Congrats!
Great video man it’s like a cheat sheet for compression.
And I love cheat sheet! :P
This video would have made my 1-2 months or studying compression much easier. Amazing
thank you, this was veeery useful, and u explained everything so clearly
thank you very much for this. it really helped me to get to grips with understanding compression. your videos are very well made, enjoyable and helpful. cheers again 👍🔉🔊🎶
Thanks! I'm glad that helped
Glad you are back with vids! Super useful, thank you!
This channel is pure gold! Continue the great job! Bravo!
thank you for the course. it's so useful!
this channel is going to be big
Very generous of you to make these videos. They are both entertaining and educational.
Best compression video so far.
Thanks!! This helps a lot! I watched tons of vids and this one clarify almost everything I didn't get in the other vids. Looking forward to watch more satisfying videos
my compliments on this sound design theory serie videos, it's great. I learned a lot of this so fast, that I've been struggling with for a while.
Hope you can complete the sound design series as soon as possible. It’s most helpful videos I found on RUclips
Just wanted to say thank you for these sound design videos. So much info packed into a quick explaination with examples. Very well done - bravo!!!
Thanks! :)
Best youtuber ever..thanks man
thank you for making these
I watched a lot of videos on compression but could never understand it apart from just the definition but this video is so good....god bless you
thanks for this clear information!
Great video. However lots of ppl get it wrong. The RELEASE is not related to the signal dropping below d treshold, but related to the gain reduction... so most of the time the release is taking plce above the threshold...
My very Fav is glue compressor. I use it for goup of tracks or single track too.
Really nice Explanation
Fantastic video!
I wish I found/had this channel two years ago when I started producing. Nonetheless, its still super useful right now, and the fact that you edited your videos to show the effects VISUALLY is immensely INSANE. Thank you for your content!
Thanks ! I'm glad it was useful :)
Good job on this subject, this video will have lots of plays I hope
Good work bro!
Thanks! Great video and love the tips!
I am going to try out that sidechain trick now 💪🏻
thank you! 👏
Thank you so much it's very clear!
Happy you like it :)
thank you a lot
This is the best video I ever seen you have a new subscriber 🎉
Thanks a lot!
Badly wating for next video please upload asap.
Only 13.9k people know about best music channel.👌👌👌
Which softwares are you using to make these video man.Great presentation and videos..
good job :)
More 5 min music theory PLS🙏 [11th chords]
Stacking several OTT's in series will cause frequency dispersion due to the crossover points. This goes for every multiband plugin really. You can achieve the same effect with EQ3 as well
Thanks for the examples! Do you have a video about EQ aswell?
@@Woochia will do, keep up the good stuff 🙃
🎉
6:00 wait, just setting the Dry/Wet knob to 50% has the same effect, doesn't it?
how did you create the live waveform preview infographic? this is fantastic
The one at the start ? It's a screenshot of the waveform that I animated in première with several instances of the screenshot and masks ^^"
Amazing video, thank you! I'm just curious about one thing - why set release time to one 1/4 note specifically? How did you know this would sync it to your tempo?
The length of a 1/4 note is 1 beat. That's why that's the first one I calculate, so I have a note on ever beat (this is naturally bound to the tempo, that's why the tempo is in the equation). From there is can divide or multiply the value I find by 2 if I need a shorter or a longer time, that will still be synced to the tempo.
@@Woochia Ah ok I get it now. Thanks for explaining :D
@1:35
Does ableton change the wave form in real time when you adjust the attack/release?
I'm a very visual learner so having this visual reference would solidify a lot of compression questions for me.
Thanks.
No, the waveform is an animation I made for the video. But the compressor has 3 types of display. There's one where you see better how and when it compresses the sound
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sibilance is the Serpent of high end frequency It isn't arbitrary that we call them symbols then call them cymbals. The serpent represents high end frequency because it hisses like the white noise from old TV sets which is the sound of the leftover radiation after the Big Bang.
How to avoid that click made by sidechain? In older versions (8 i think)of ableton there was an option to eliminate that click
You can make the attack longer to reduce the click, but I usually don't bother a lot with as there would be a kick or a snare playing at the same time, so it would be drown in another transient
Using the 'mix' knob on a compressor like Ableton's will achieve the same effect as parallel compression, right?
From what I understand, yes. The advantage to put the compressor in a parallel chain would be if we put other effects in that chain.
@@Woochia Thanks & thank you for your videos! They are great :) Keep them coming and wishing you a good 2023
How did you make these sounds that start at 9:46?
That's a recording of a little Jew harp / mouth harp I had
@@Woochia got it, thanks!

Not gonna lie, kinda lost it at the sidechain math. but then again i use logic and fl
ableton looks very complicated
