Hey Mike thanks for the video. While I disagree about the anime artstyle and soundtrack, I agree on everything else. To me what ruined bleach were the editors of shonen jump for meddling. In a interview kubo stated the hueco Mundo arc was supposed to short and has certain disdain for shonen jump.
Aaaaand you rushed though it in a "Lets finish this so I can get to an anime I like" kinda way again. And you dissed on your own logic of "Don't judge a book by it's cover" with all the Captains. And have you even heard the music from the Hell Arc?! Some of the best from the series. (Yes, they literally go INTO hell!) I guess obviously the anime just wasn't "edgy" enough for your tastes. End Manga does get damn awesome though.
I'm just here to see what he knows. Subjectivity is always allowed but if your overview lacks any sorts or bits of objectivity then you obviously misunderstood the sourc material that's being analyzed.
"On the Precipice of Defeat" Of all the things I didn't expect him to shit on the OST even with the disclaimer upfront. Given all of its flaws, still the soundtrack alone with watching the anime IMO. But daaamn, was the 1st filler arc atrocious.
Although I highly disagree on the captains being boring characters, I 100% agree about Bleach working better in black and white. Something about it seems off in color.

Ok, I've never watched/read Bleach but even I can tell the noise music is badass. And the moment I hear it I know it's Bleach, so that really tells you something
Man, if you haven't yet. Check out the OST for Bleach. There is a really compilation by "EpicAnimeRequiem". It is absolutely amazing! I knew Bleach had great music but didn't realize how good the OST was until I stumbled upon that video. Shiro Sagisu is a goddamn genius.
With that moment when he said black and white. Imagine a whole bleach anime in like stylized black and white? That would be a really interesting experiment.
@@charlesolsen7559 yeah! and maybe it could have use a similar shading style to the manga with that utilizes cross-hatching and deeper shadows. That in motion would be insane (but probably pretty difficult to make as well)
I just picked up Bleach in late 2019, having never seen it before and I really like it. It's one of my favorite anime/manga now. I agree with some of your opinions and disagree with others, but overall I think this was a great video.
He only gave his opinions, he never even went in depth. Bleach is very similar to one piece & naruto. But any body that says bleach in a whole is bad, then i just can't believe that those people are real. Bleach is Excellent. 👍
Ichigo is easily my favorite shonen protagonist. I actually am surprised that you would say the captains (and other high rank shinigami) were boring... I found myself getting attached to nearly every single one of them for different reasons as they all vary wildly in personality. Bleach is one of those series where I can’t even pick a favorite character because I like them all so much... even characters I thought I hated like Gin and Mayuri I grew to love. Surprisingly I probably dislike Toshiro the most because he’s like....the most milktoast captain
I will say one thing that annoyed me...they made the songs to fit the tone of the filler bount arc....and then continued to use them later on.. which made no sense. Like that song that has that fast harpsichord melody... fit perfectly for the whole vampire thing but then they started using it for the following arcs and it just seemed thematically out of place
It may just be the soul society in general that I’m not in love with, I could never really figure out ichigos role with them or exactly what they were doing the whole time. It’s like, at first you hear they’re supposed to fight hollows but they mostly drop that after the first season. As far as captains I liked, gin was sick, byakuya was cool after he pooped out that stick, big titty girl is alright, I like the scruffy dude with the hat a ton, dog guy was rad but he was stand out, and I liked the chick in charge of the black ops.
@@BonsaiPop my assumption was that they would send out lower seated officers to take down hollows, like how they sent Rukia the first time. Unless dealing with something that was a greater threat like a menos grande. I’m sure all the lower rank shinigami can take out the lesser hollows and purify them, and seeing as how there’s ten billion no name soldier soul reapers, it makes sense why they wouldn’t get screen time.
@@BonsaiPop Sorry if I'm mis judging you. But would i be wrong if i say that you certainly didn't spend quality time analyzing or learning the series. That is the vibe i get from you. Every series, manga, show, movie etc has highs and lows, goods & bads. Bleach goods, & highs far out shines its bad & lows. Ichigo is relatable, he doesn't get all the damn spot light, the females in bleach were greatly written, the supporting characters are really great & likable, the story, the manipulations, the deceptions, the villains, the emotions, the back stories, the fights, the abilities, are all GREAT 👍. ALL hate & misunderstandings for Bleach turn to ashes Ryujinjaka 🔥.
I'm a grown ass straight man but I need to say that my favorite characters are Byakuya and Ulquiorra. The man literally died because because he filled the hole in his existence.
Personally I'm impressed how characters dressed in similar uniforms (the shinigami) can all look so unique. Maybe I'm just a fan of matching uniforms in anime. Also I gotta say, I wasn't a huge fan of the last arc of the Bleach manga. I have high hopes that the anime version will be better when it comes out.
Kubo was sick had to rush becuz of his declining health lol thats why he ended it lol it was supposed to better and longer. But hes working on the anime.
@@305thief8 Just saying. Pull up a picture of a regime and you'll see that most of the soldiers are wearing matching outfits. The redundant dressed soul reapers also have a few traits of their shihakushos that tells them a bit of their characters or at least gives clarity between them.
@@305thief8 Example, Rangiku's pink shaw, necklace, and we'll...lack of undershirt. That tells you she's quite feminine and graceful when it comes to showing of her elegant beauty. Yumichika's orange turtleneck slash arm warmer. Hisagi's lack of sleeves and those chain bombs. Shows you he's a bit gritty and doesn't mind getting his hands dirty. On top of that being a sort of trademark from his squad. Kenpachi ragged, tethered and ronin asethic tells you he's a outsider. Byakuya's arm piece, hair pins, and white scarf gives the idea that he's a sort of noble or very upperclass. Kaname's orange scarf,half gloves,goggles,and needle boots. Even his hairstyle and skin color breaks even. Renji's tattoos and headband. Shunsui's giant pink coat and sun hat. Mayori's hunchback, exotic face paint tells you he's crazy or bizzare. Menu wears a kimodo with a mini skirt and rolled up sleeves. She appears very assistant like. Which what she is. Toshiro's captain coat has more sharp and pronounced shoulders as well as the sleeves being shorter. Retsu's braid falling down her coat. Yamoto wearing his coat on his shoulder. Which represents he's hardened and in terms of position is beyond the other captains. Soi Fong sleeves are shorter, arm bands, and even shoes. Mid way in battle she's ditches it all together. Her dimwitted partner is decked out in ice and has that lavender collar. Which represents great wealth. The list goes on. These design increments become more apparent in the timeskip. Sheesh what ever happened to subtly?
Idk, I like the fillers are actually good, the problem is the placement, if there is anything to complain about bleach, it's that the arcs are scrambled.

After all these years of being a bleach fan, I definitely feel what Mike means I love and hate it. Dudeeee and my mind has been blown did not know Santeria was an used as an inspiration for the arrancars, my culture as an inspiration tears of joy.
I suspected something when some of the Hallows had Spanish names but I assumed it was inspired by Mexico instead. I wonder what made the creator pull from so many different places. Wish that diversity was reflected more in setting of the Soul Society itself though.
ive always loved bleach, but i appreciate someone tearing it apart and acknowledging its many flaws, especially the anime. as you traverse the story, it gets further away from the source material, and some characters get lame or seem shoehorned in. i appreciate the honesty, and even if i like something someone else dislikes, that doesnt matter because we all like manga and anime and everyone has different tastes and sees things differently. thank you for your hard work!
@Kevin Byrnes well its really subjective. Bleach has a more punk rock and electrifyingly awesome sound for the people who like it, but if you're a 50 year old Japanese guy, the traditional Japanese sound of Naruto might be ur cup of tea.
It's more consistent than the other two but like nothing in Bleach looks as good as stuff like Rock Lee vs Gaara or Naruto vs Sasuke. Wano also looks better but that's new so that's not quite fair.
You say that you hate bleach, but you really like Bleach, I feel the same. It's like Tyra Banks when she broke down and screamed at that girl "I was rooting for you! We were all rooting for you"
It mainly stems from a painfully slow beginning and the shit ton of filler arc's. At least its how I was with it. I dismissed the show when I first watched on adult swim back in the day, but channel flipped on one of the early soul reaper fights one night and got hooked. But it was a good 10 plus episodes after I dismissed it.
@@NormalModeTV I think I'd have the same problem too if I didn't grow up with it. 14 year old me had issues with it at first because of how boring it started off and the first filler arc.
@@joshuaholman7760 14 year old me was less mature than you and just loved it unabashedly. lol Rewatching it all now with my nephew and some things have held up very well, others.. I'm less jazzed about.
@@NormalModeTV oh I love it, I loved it once the soul reapers came for Rukia til that entire story line ended. But the first 10 or so episodes were not fun for me. Then I fell in love once again with the Arrancar and haven't let it go. I felt devastated when the Hueco Mundo invasion arc ended with Grim Jow my senior year of high school. And it took adult swim like 2-3 years to bring it back.
i think the "captaind been one dimensional" is cause no matter the what happens, all of them have the "i will act a certain way until i have to win this fight then i will get serious" i would love to more of them, for example, i would love to see a victorious yamamoto avenging the death of his sexond in command only to realize that the honor of battle and the society that he helped build will not bring his friend back and maybe just resigning and leaving shit to shunsui like it happens, what im trying to say is that captains only have 2 modes "haha funny jokes mode" and "well, gotta do it to them" mode with nothing in between
I stopped Watching when he tells that the Captain is Boring ... this is a statement of a mad man ... The biggest Reason Why Everyone Loves Bleach is because of the captains, the Arrancar come close but no cigar .... Captains > Arrancars > Fullbrings .......... I do not like the quincys, I only Like Ishida, his father, Juha Bach, Asnodt and Hashwalt .. the other quincys is lame on char design and techniques
I actually love the weird, erie, techno scratch sound effects they used in the anime, but I could see why someone wouldn't. I just wish the rest of the series had the same strength and set up of the Soul Society arc
Been waiting for you to cover this, I love the manga and it's one of the manga that I can keep rereading and finding new things to love about it. You've got great points about the anime but I still can't wait for the adaptation of the final arc since Kubo is working with whatever studio directly. Love seeing different perspectives on things I love
The vibe i got from him is that he didn't spend enough time on getting to know Bleach. Maybe its because he didn't want to. Anyone who knows bleach well, will disagree with him on many if not every area. Bleach is really really gooooooood. 👍
I disagree with you in One moment - I FRICKIN LOVE THIS SOUND! Soundtrack is so cool in anime, and not just openings, all soundtracks/themes are cool. And first filler was really bad, yeah, but other are the best filler arks I have seen. (especialy, in comparison with naruto)
If you said that Aizen was a dissapointement you have the reading comprehension of a 8 year old, he has the best themes of all shonen antagonists, some of the best dialogues and his writing in general is so good.
Claims it has awful animation. But I bet I can pull various moments where it wasn't. He also claimed how manufactured it is. But claims how the One Piece anime is so much Superior despite literally he Ng the same case. Finds Gotei 13 boring but likes the Espada better despite one litterally mirrors the other. That's my main problem with this analytical breakdown, no claims seem really cemented and as well seems very hypocritical.
Love your videos man. While Hitsuguya doesn't accomplish much, he'll forever be remembered by the translation I saw to his reaction to Aizen. "I will kill you with my violence!". I was just so perplexed and yet astounded. I just thought this man must be so full of rage he can't even be precise. Like his violent ideas alone will hurt Aizen. That always sticks with me
I watched all of bleach last month for the first time & I made sure to skip ALL the filler for a much better viewing experience but overall I can see why it was one of the big 3 for so long it was worth the viewing experience as a whole
I just finished reading Naruto and man am i glad i did that what a fun series that i was sleeping on. See when teh big 3 was a thing most of the people myself included liked one of the big 3. Pirates are the coolest and then grim reapers with giant swords. However Shonen anime just does to many weird things. So i dropped everything but One piece . Now i finally have time to read through it and i think i might finally give Bleach a go but Manga format. Thanks for the video as always
Love or Hate it, you've gotta admit it has the most diverse OST of any Shounen Anime. From Ichigo's theme to the Arrancar and Quincy's, everything is just built differently in that regard.
Yes, I was the guy who asked you about BLEACH for so many years. Bleach is one the greatest anime/manga ever. Its an inspiration that teaches alot of great lessons with a great story. Kubo deserve all the love for it.
I feel this video is under shinjis shikai. Everything is the reverse of what critics actually say about bleach: You hate the anime but love the manga Critics say the manga lacks backgrounds so it's terrible but the anime is phenomenal 🤣🤣
personally i feel like bleach had a lack of story telling in arc but in terms of the writing characters i think kubo is really good. characters like the captains start there own story arcs when soul society happens and finishes the story arcs at different point in future arcs. kenpachi story arcs goes on throughout the story, same with gin, byakua, maiyuri, tosen/komamura. when compared to naruto/one piece it stands out as an outlier because it doesn't fit the mould of a Shonen battle manga, but as i grew older i appreciates the stories it did tell(not the arcs but the character stories). i view ichigo as a character more of a cross between smallville clark kent and spiderman, which is a western take on superhero's and there journey they take in becoming a hero, which is why i think it was so successful in the west compared to one piece.
I gotta disagree with the soul reapers aspect. I think that's where Bleach shines because it builds the world and lore of the worlds bleach is when you have so many characters with different personality traits, ideals and designs. Yeah I know the captain's clock look bland but I'm talking about the overall characters.

He has some good points here and there but most of it is a bit of headscratcher. He says it has bad animation, aggregious pacing, and repetitive plotlines and later compares it to....One Piece. A little Bias? I think so.
Indeed and I've watched and read bleach and don't feel that way about how it looks nor its characters or story. A lot of it is optionated but without any real examples thats all it'll every be.
Very much agree with this take. I loved Bleach when I was younger and it’s the show that brought me from anime to manga. Entirely because the character designs are sick but the anime had really bad pacing. So I decided to just go right to the source and it’s by far the superior experience.
I highly disagree with captains being 1D Byakuya alone in the SS arc has mayor character development and we understand his views about the law and the system and how he’s willing to obey it no matter what it takes ichigo this outlaw who comes in and tries to change these laws to actually question his views on the system and how it’s seemingly “the system put in place against the the human will and what truly should be right” and it’s represented in Ichigo and Byakuya and their interactions are just perfect imo and so many more captains have the same thing going with them story wise. Big bad type of format is only used in the beginning of BLEACH where we are introduced to all the characters after that we have aizen who’s the main villain for more then half the series and we get an explanation of his plans and goals as he makes them. So I don’t really understand the story not having a point A-B structure because everything is laid out in front of us
Not to be rude but the impression I got from you saying their designs r boring was that you didn’t look past the designs in bleach and assumed they were just boring without diving deeper into their characters.
Bleach does have alot of foreshadowing, but it is hard to spot, even i didn't notice some foreshadowing, like shinji shikai ability being foreshadowing while he was introduced in school, that was one hidden foreshadowing to me
I feel like in order to understand the story in bleach you have to at least read it more than once because usually people miss details or aspects that are important to the overall plot and I whit the captains character being 2d I disagree however I must say that the anime did a lot of mistakes and the animation wasn’t that good I watched the whole and I still feel that manga wise Kubo needed more time to finish the series and it would have been way better than the end product we got otherwise I would recommend bleach every time I get the chance , am just going to say that I didn’t expect that bonsai pop would dislike the anime and some aspects of the narrative in the manga but I still enjoyed the video primarily due to the fact that I was waiting to hear the channel’s take on the series thank bonsai pop
Saying that bleach has no foreshadowing or is a mess is kimd of a stretch to me. There was amazing foreshadowing with shinjis zanpakuto power or ichigos hollowfication at the beginning. But yeah during the fake karakura town arc it was too much fighting and the fight against aizen was a bit underwhelming, but it is still my favourite series of all time.
I see, so you've chosen death. Honestly I get where your coming from and legit I feel someone should cut of the series and just edit it. Don't scramble the arc's the filler arc's can be pushed on after the main arc, that way people can leave fulfilled. Honestly I think it's universal even among bleach fans that Kubo fucked up the Aizen fight. He was set up perfectly for him to be beat like that, but once again I personally feel kubo wrote himself in a corner he just straight up made Aizen too powerful that he forgot to come up with a way to beat in a way that makes sense that is also fulfilling. Hell I would have taken ichigo actually losing that fight to be honest, we could have got some development for him. If their is any argument that I will disagree with it's your opinion on the soul reapers, they all wear the same outfit but they all have some minkr aesthetic to them that makes that simple outfit unique to each captain or Vice captain. Their not as cool looking as hollows or the Espada but still.
Just gotta say the aizen fight is not wrong or power scaled bad at all tbh he is like the 3rd strongest character in the series and ichigo mugets form is number one even when he has his new bankai so this is one of my favorite fights and think it just have little to no flaws also if I say things weird or wrong I’m on mobile sorry
I honestly think the fight couldve been better but i think it makes sense how Aizen was taken out its kinda foreshadowed. Aizen said he doesnt need to be on guard anymore and Urahara was giving me the vibe he was planning something lol.
I watched the first few episodes of Bleach recently, kinda missed the boat on it as a kid and there's so much here I agree with you. The designs of the hollows are super fascinating, and everything oozes counter culture of punk, metal, and hip hop which would drag me right in but the shots and sometimes blase animation couldn't hold me.
Ichigo is the most badass anime character protagonist of all-time in my opinion. his fight with Byakuya wil always be in my mind. The special thing about it is that Byakuya kept up with Ichigo's Bankai with just his Shikai which is insanely impressive.
Example of Ichigo's character development in the soul society arc, he lived amongst the soul society's impoverished folk, which gave him the idea of the large class gap between souls and soul reapers. Through his trek to the seireitei he learns about the government and polices instilled by the soul reapers. How unjust and savage they are by allowing the death of their own (Rukia). With all these experiences he saw the bigger picture, not saving Rukia but also wanting to change its "laws". Although how narm it sounds. We still see aspects of his Character unveil. Later on in the coming Arrancar arc he's a bit of a loose cannon, admittedly. Same as Goku in the Majin Buu arc. Goku was established as a prideful warrior who likes to fight opponents on equal grounds. We know that about him all the way up in the Android saga. Even though this same sentiment cause his own death and made him berate his son for essentially doing the same thing he proceeds to hold this vocation in the Majin Buu saga, which caused the needless death of people. Including love ones. Through his death you'll expect he'll at least cut back from these beliefs but he still holds it regardless.
Boy, i just don't get people. What is there not to like about Bleach. The fillers are really good 👍. Are people manufacturing shit excuses to justify that the anime was cancelled? However, the anime was never really canceled, it paused. And we know kubo got very sick. Bleach is great. 👍
I mean i get we're your coming from but for me bleach will always be number 1 since it was my gateway to anime it has a shitload lf nostalgia of me watching late at Night on toonami
I started reading the Bleach manga shortly before it was announced that they were making an anime in Japan. I watched fansubs of episode one when it first aired. I continued reading it until about volume 20 of the tankoban (shortly after the end of the Save Rukia arc) because it almost immediately lost my interest. It was great up until then. I felt like I'd gotten the story Kubo had set out to tell, and anything he was doing from that point forward felt more like a contrivance than anything. And based on everything people told me that came later, I was -exactly- right in my estimation :P
I recently just started watching bleach and I love every bit of it and it pisses me the fuck off that it's being treated this way it feels like people's just can't enjoy a shadow anymore and I pray every day the series reclaims its place in the spotlight as one of the greatest animes ever conceived.
I love Bleach, always will. 1st one I went fan crazy over. I still think it's one of the best Mangas to read for beginners, has great tension & fights. I love the music it's one of the few soundtracks I have. Will still argue the captains aren't boring. I can definitely see the flaws, like it could have been so much better to Ichigo's friends in keeping them fascinating, but for me the good outweighs the bad. Would love another video about this & YuYu Hakusho.

Bleach in my opinion has the most potential out of all anima to be the best anima Its was truly unfortunate how fatigue and tired Kubo was and if had help it might be different
@@305thief8 for me I just naturally lost interest after it shortly after ulquiorra disapeared, the story dragged too much I could not help but to drop it
The fashion style and character designs carried this series 🥰 amazing ideas/concepts but plot lines were dragged out or abandoned in ways that left me unsatisfied💡
1.Orihime and chal need more time: agreed 2.Boring characters: disagree 3.Many don't get enough screentime but most people we see are given characters not bland. 4.I actually like the absence of point b 5.Yes manga is better but anime is not bad love them both. 6. Ichigo's hair does not feel wrong😅 7. Kubo removed background to help concentrate on characters it worked well but can't do it in anime. 8. Filler if didn't exist bleach would be seasonal and they don't feel too bad. 9. You didn't like the ost 🤯
thoughts are it's just the same thing, but movies...so with movies the animation quality and pacing is going to be better plus you're going to get more content packed in because they have less time to work with you have to fit it all into like 1-2 hours unless they do OVA where they can do like 40 min episodes each.
Huh. A couple of hot takes that are more subjective than objective in there with your feelings on the Soul Reapers, Precipice of Defeat, and a little bit with a few filler arcs. All that being said, though, this is a pretty fair mixed take on Bleach. Bleach is definitely more visually stunning as a manga than an anime, though I'll admit the anime has some well animated fights, and while I don't agree with your take on how Bleach handles its main villains, I can certainly see why you'd say that. @@undertaker9991 More so that I was saying the anime's not very visually impressive, but that the manga is exactly the opposite. Not as if an animated series hasn't had better visuals than a book/comic in the past, after all.
I never gave some much though to the fact that the background in the anime is simply off due to color, but you're completely right. I remember that people used to complain a lot about Kubo's tendency to not draw any background but I enjoyed that a lot while reading Bleach when I caught up with the anime; it's like if all the focus is in the character design, gestures, interactions and, off course, battle. The openings are simple dope tho', really recommend them.
I can understand almost any criticism of Bleach, but I don’t understand why people don’t like the soundtrack. I find it to be the greatest soundtrack in all of anime.
I am absolutely begging you, please do a video on BECK: Mongolian Chop squad. Its a musical slice of life, but so much more than that. I identify with it so much, especially as a band member who tried extremely hard to make it only for it to never quite get there. Really think you would personally like this one as well.
I'm pretty sure someone else may have already mentioned it, but Kubo is known for being great at character design, but lackluster on drawing backgrounds. That's why it tends to be relatively plain or monochromatic a lot of the time. Also, Kubo got completely burned out working on Bleach, causing a lot the arcs to follow similar patterns.
Kubo mentions in an interview that he doesnt draw backgrounds on purpose and its literally 2 arcs in Bleach that follow the same presentation, the rest is completely different. You should check out One Piece for that matter lol.
Bleach disappointed me. And I wholeheartedly agree with the animation adaptation flaws. Awful filler. Horrible background that hasn’t aged well. And the Soul Reapers get bland with their uniforms. It holds a special place in my heart because it was the Anime that got me back into the medium. But as I read through it’s final arc I just dropped it as a weekly reading. The way they turned Ichigo into a soul reaper hollow super saiyan jinchuriki but such a bad taste in my mouth I couldn’t take it.
Bleach is a series I wanted to like, but ultimately just didnt. The same thing happened to me where they go to save Rukia and then my interest just drove off a cliff. There are some really cool concepts and a unique style but it always boils down to Ichiho learns big powerful move to finish enemy off after taking a beating. Rinse, repeat.
I truly love Bleach, it is my absolute favorite, and I even got the skull symbol from the combat pass as a tattoo. Even though I don't agree with your standing, I still love how unbiased you made your review. Thank y'all for the hard work and great videos!
Finally, thanks man. Someone had to say it. I like bleach but I never understood how Ichigo has all of those abilities as if the captains aren't bad ass enough.

Like naruto the show is about him but he had to face major obstacles to get to his dream, and one piece luffy gets his ass whooped and nowhere close to being pirate king. but nooooo ichigo is part this and part that, and it makes him over powered and the savior of all of soul society and human realm. U had zaraki kenpachi who is a BEAST, 0 squad captain who could incinerate the world and call up corpses of those whom he killed, aizen who was literally playing 5D chess on the world but this substitute shinigami with one freaking move comes in and nobody can do anything unless ichigo is there, drives me nuts.

Hey Mike thanks for the video. While I disagree about the anime artstyle and soundtrack, I agree on everything else. To me what ruined bleach were the editors of shonen jump for meddling. In a interview kubo stated the hueco Mundo arc was supposed to short and has certain disdain for shonen jump.

I just picked up Bleach in late 2019, having never seen it before and I really like it. It's one of my favorite anime/manga now. I agree with some of your opinions and disagree with others, but overall I think this was a great video.

Ichigo is easily my favorite shonen protagonist. I actually am surprised that you would say the captains (and other high rank shinigami) were boring... I found myself getting attached to nearly every single one of them for different reasons as they all vary wildly in personality. Bleach is one of those series where I can’t even pick a favorite character because I like them all so much... even characters I thought I hated like Gin and Mayuri I grew to love. Surprisingly I probably dislike Toshiro the most because he’s like....the most milktoast captain
I will say one thing that annoyed me...they made the songs to fit the tone of the filler bount arc....and then continued to use them later on.. which made no sense. Like that song that has that fast harpsichord melody... fit perfectly for the whole vampire thing but then they started using it for the following arcs and it just seemed thematically out of place
It may just be the soul society in general that I’m not in love with, I could never really figure out ichigos role with them or exactly what they were doing the whole time. It’s like, at first you hear they’re supposed to fight hollows but they mostly drop that after the first season. As far as captains I liked, gin was sick, byakuya was cool after he pooped out that stick, big titty girl is alright, I like the scruffy dude with the hat a ton, dog guy was rad but he was stand out, and I liked the chick in charge of the black ops.
@@BonsaiPop my assumption was that they would send out lower seated officers to take down hollows, like how they sent Rukia the first time. Unless dealing with something that was a greater threat like a menos grande. I’m sure all the lower rank shinigami can take out the lesser hollows and purify them, and seeing as how there’s ten billion no name soldier soul reapers, it makes sense why they wouldn’t get screen time.

Ichigo is relatable, he doesn't get all the damn spot light, the females in bleach were greatly written, the supporting characters are really great & likable, the story, the manipulations, the deceptions, the villains, the emotions, the back stories, the fights, the abilities, are all GREAT 👍. Personally I'm impressed how characters dressed in similar uniforms (the shinigami) can all look so unique. Maybe I'm just a fan of matching uniforms in anime.
Also I gotta say, I wasn't a huge fan of the last arc of the Bleach manga. I have high hopes that the anime version will be better when it comes out.

@@305thief8 Just saying. Pull up a picture of a regime and you'll see that most of the soldiers are wearing matching outfits. The redundant dressed soul reapers also have a few traits of their shihakushos that tells them a bit of their characters or at least gives clarity between them.

Yumichika's orange turtleneck slash arm warmer.
Hisagi's lack of sleeves and those chain bombs. Shows you he's a bit gritty and doesn't mind getting his hands dirty. On top of that being a sort of trademark from his squad.
Kenpachi ragged, tethered and ronin asethic tells you he's a outsider.
Byakuya's arm piece, hair pins, and white scarf gives the idea that he's a sort of noble or very upperclass.
Kaname's orange scarf,half gloves,goggles,and needle boots. Even his hairstyle and skin color breaks even.
Renji's tattoos and headband.
Shunsui's giant pink coat and sun hat.
Mayori's hunchback, exotic face paint tells you he's crazy or bizzare.
Menu wears a kimodo with a mini skirt and rolled up sleeves. She appears very assistant like. Which what she is.
Toshiro's captain coat has more sharp and pronounced shoulders as well as the sleeves being shorter.
Retsu's braid falling down her coat.
Yamoto wearing his coat on his shoulder. Which represents he's hardened and in terms of position is beyond the other captains.
Soi Fong sleeves are shorter, arm bands, and even shoes. Mid way in battle she's ditches it all together. Her dimwitted partner is decked out in ice and has that lavender collar. Which represents great wealth.
The list goes on. These design increments become more apparent in the timeskip. Sheesh what ever happened to subtly?

After all these years of being a bleach fan, I definitely feel what Mike means I love and hate it. Dudeeee and my mind has been blown did not know Santeria was an used as an inspiration for the arrancars, my culture as an inspiration tears of joy.
I suspected something when some of the Hallows had Spanish names but I assumed it was inspired by Mexico instead. I wonder what made the creator pull from so many different places. Wish that diversity was reflected more in setting of the Soul Society itself though.

ive always loved bleach, but i appreciate someone tearing it apart and acknowledging its many flaws, especially the anime. as you traverse the story, it gets further away from the source material, and some characters get lame or seem shoehorned in. i appreciate the honesty, and even if i like something someone else dislikes, that doesnt matter because we all like manga and anime and everyone has different tastes and sees things differently. thank you for your hard work!

@Kevin Byrnes well its really subjective. Bleach has a more punk rock and electrifyingly awesome sound for the people who like it, but if you're a 50 year old Japanese guy, the traditional Japanese sound of Naruto might be ur cup of tea.

It's more consistent than the other two but like nothing in Bleach looks as good as stuff like Rock Lee vs Gaara or Naruto vs Sasuke. Wano also looks better but that's new so that's not quite fair.

It mainly stems from a painfully slow beginning and the shit ton of filler arc's. At least its how I was with it.
I dismissed the show when I first watched on adult swim back in the day, but channel flipped on one of the early soul reaper fights one night and got hooked. But it was a good 10 plus episodes after I dismissed it.

The biggest Reason Why Everyone Loves Bleach is because of the captains, the Arrancar come close but no cigar .... Captains > Arrancars > Fullbrings .......... I actually love the weird, erie, techno scratch sound effects they used in the anime, but I could see why someone wouldn't. I just wish the rest of the series had the same strength and set up of the Soul Society arc

I disagree with you in One moment - I FRICKIN LOVE THIS SOUND! Soundtrack is so cool in anime, and not just openings, all soundtracks/themes are cool. And first filler was really bad, yeah, but other are the best filler arks I have seen. (especialy, in comparison with naruto)

If you said that Aizen was a dissapointement you have the reading comprehension of a 8 year old, he has the best themes of all shonen antagonists, some of the best dialogues and his writing in general is so good.

I watched all of bleach last month for the first time & I made sure to skip ALL the filler for a much better viewing experience but overall I can see why it was one of the big 3 for so long it was worth the viewing experience as a whole

I just finished reading Naruto and man am i glad i did that what a fun series that i was sleeping on. See when teh big 3 was a thing most of the people myself included liked one of the big 3. Pirates are the coolest and then grim reapers with giant swords. However Shonen anime just does to many weird things. So i dropped everything but One piece . Now i finally have time to read through it and i think i might finally give Bleach a go but Manga format. Thanks for the video as always
Love or Hate it, you've gotta admit it has the most diverse OST of any Shounen Anime. From Ichigo's theme to the Arrancar and Quincy's, everything is just built differently in that regard.

Yes, I was the guy who asked you about BLEACH for so many years. Bleach is one the greatest anime/manga ever. Its an inspiration that teaches alot of great lessons with a great story. Kubo deserve all the love for it.

personally i feel like bleach had a lack of story telling in arc but in terms of the writing characters i think kubo is really good.
characters like the captains start there own story arcs when soul society happens and finishes the story arcs at different point in future arcs.
kenpachi story arcs goes on throughout the story, same with gin, byakua, maiyuri, tosen/komamura.
when compared to naruto/one piece it stands out as an outlier because it doesn't fit the mould of a Shonen battle manga, but as i grew older i appreciates the stories it did tell(not the arcs but the character stories). i view ichigo as a character more of a cross between smallville clark kent and spiderman, which is a western take on superhero's and there journey they take in becoming a hero, which is why i think it was so successful in the west compared to one piece.
I gotta disagree with the soul reapers aspect. I think that's where Bleach shines because it builds the world and lore of the worlds bleach is when you have so many characters with different personality traits, ideals and designs. Yeah I know the captain's clock look bland but I'm talking about the overall characters.

Very much agree with this take. I loved Bleach when I was younger and it’s the show that brought me from anime to manga. Entirely because the character designs are sick but the anime had really bad pacing. So I decided to just go right to the source and it’s by far the superior experience.
I highly disagree with captains being 1D Byakuya alone in the SS arc has mayor character development and we understand his views about the law and the system and how he’s willing to obey it no matter what it takes ichigo this outlaw who comes in and tries to change these laws to actually question his views on the system and how it’s seemingly “the system put in place against the the human will and what truly should be right” and it’s represented in Ichigo and Byakuya and their interactions are just perfect imo and so many more captains have the same thing going with them story wise. Big bad type of format is only used in the beginning of BLEACH where we are introduced to all the characters after that we have aizen who’s the main villain for more then half the series and we get an explanation of his plans and goals as he makes them. So I don’t really understand the story not having a point A-B structure because everything is laid out in front of us

Bleach does have alot of foreshadowing, but it is hard to spot, even i didn't notice some foreshadowing, like shinji shikai ability being foreshadowing while he was introduced in school, that was one hidden foreshadowing to me
I feel like in order to understand the story in bleach you have to at least read it more than once because usually people miss details or aspects that are important to the overall plot and I whit the captains character being 2d I disagree however I must say that the anime did a lot of mistakes and the animation wasn’t that good I watched the whole and I still feel that manga wise Kubo needed more time to finish the series and it would have been way better than the end product we got otherwise I would recommend bleach every time I get the chance , am just going to say that I didn’t expect that bonsai pop would dislike the anime and some aspects of the narrative in the manga but I still enjoyed the video primarily due to the fact that I was waiting to hear the channel’s take on the series thank bonsai pop
Saying that bleach has no foreshadowing or is a mess is kimd of a stretch to me. There was amazing foreshadowing with shinjis zanpakuto power or ichigos hollowfication at the beginning. But yeah during the fake karakura town arc it was too much fighting and the fight against aizen was a bit underwhelming, but it is still my favourite series of all time.

Don't scramble the arc's the filler arc's can be pushed on after the main arc, that way people can leave fulfilled.
Honestly I think it's universal even among bleach fans that Kubo fucked up the Aizen fight.
He was set up perfectly for him to be beat like that, but once again I personally feel kubo wrote himself in a corner he just straight up made Aizen too powerful that he forgot to come up with a way to beat in a way that makes sense that is also fulfilling.
Hell I would have taken ichigo actually losing that fight to be honest, we could have got some development for him.
If their is any argument that I will disagree with it's your opinion on the soul reapers, they all wear the same outfit but they all have some minkr aesthetic to them that makes that simple outfit unique to each captain or Vice captain.

I honestly think the fight couldve been better but i think it makes sense how Aizen was taken out its kinda foreshadowed. Aizen said he doesnt need to be on guard anymore and Urahara was giving me the vibe he was planning something lol.
I watched the first few episodes of Bleach recently, kinda missed the boat on it as a kid and there's so much here I agree with you. The designs of the hollows are super fascinating, and everything oozes counter culture of punk, metal, and hip hop which would drag me right in but the shots and sometimes blase animation couldn't hold me.

Ichigo is the most badass anime character protagonist of all-time in my opinion. his fight with Byakuya wil always be in my mind. The special thing about it is that Byakuya kept up with Ichigo's Bankai with just his Shikai which is insanely impressive.
Example of Ichigo's character development in the soul society arc, he lived amongst the soul society's impoverished folk, which gave him the idea of the large class gap between souls and soul reapers. Through his trek to the seireitei he learns about the government and polices instilled by the soul reapers. How unjust and savage they are by allowing the death of their own (Rukia). With all these experiences he saw the bigger picture, not saving Rukia but also wanting to change its "laws". Although how narm it sounds. We still see aspects of his Character unveil. Later on in the coming Arrancar arc he's a bit of a loose cannon, admittedly. Same as Goku in the Majin Buu arc. Goku was established as a prideful warrior who likes to fight opponents on equal grounds. We know that about him all the way up in the Android saga. Even though this same sentiment cause his own death and made him berate his son for essentially doing the same thing he proceeds to hold this vocation in the Majin Buu saga, which caused the needless death of people. Including love ones. Through his death you'll expect he'll at least cut back from these beliefs but he still holds it regardless.

Bleach is my favourite of the big 3. I actually have an Espada tattoo on my right arm. I enjoy most of the filler to be honest 😂
Boy, i just don't get people. What is there not to like about Bleach. The fillers are really good 👍. Are people manufacturing shit excuses to justify that the anime was cancelled? However, the anime was never really canceled, it paused. And we know kubo got very sick. Bleach is great. 👍

I started reading the Bleach manga shortly before it was announced that they were making an anime in Japan. I watched fansubs of episode one when it first aired. I continued reading it until about volume 20 of the tankoban (shortly after the end of the Save Rukia arc) because it almost immediately lost my interest. It was great up until then. I felt like I'd gotten the story Kubo had set out to tell, and anything he was doing from that point forward felt more like a contrivance than anything.
And based on everything people told me that came later, I was -exactly- right in my estimation :P
When I was little, I thought Bleach was a grown up Naruto

I recently just started watching bleach and I love every bit of it and it pisses me the fuck off that it's being treated this way it feels like people's just can't enjoy a shadow anymore and I pray every day the series reclaims its place in the spotlight as one of the greatest animes ever conceived.
I love Bleach, always will. 1st one I went fan crazy over.
I still think it's one of the best Mangas to read for beginners, has great tension & fights. I love the music it's one of the few soundtracks I have.
Will still argue the captains aren't boring.
I can definitely see the flaws, like it could have been so much better to Ichigo's friends in keeping them fascinating, but for me the good outweighs the bad.

thoughts are it's just the same thing, but movies...so with movies the animation quality and pacing is going to be better plus you're going to get more content packed in because they have less time to work with you have to fit it all into like 1-2 hours unless they do OVA where they can do like 40 min episodes each.

Huh. A couple of hot takes that are more subjective than objective in there with your feelings on the Soul Reapers, Precipice of Defeat, and a little bit with a few filler arcs. All that being said, though, this is a pretty fair mixed take on Bleach. Bleach is definitely more visually stunning as a manga than an anime, though I'll admit the anime has some well animated fights, and while I don't agree with your take on how Bleach handles its main villains, I can certainly see why you'd say that. Nice videdo.

Bleach has a lot of foreshadowing though... like, a LOT. Probably need to take time to re-read to notice it as it's often subtle.

I never gave some much though to the fact that the background in the anime is simply off due to color, but you're completely right. I remember that people used to complain a lot about Kubo's tendency to not draw any background but I enjoyed that a lot while reading Bleach when I caught up with the anime; it's like if all the focus is in the character design, gestures, interactions and, off course, battle. The openings are simple dope tho', really recommend them.
I can understand almost any criticism of Bleach, but I don’t understand why people don’t like the soundtrack. I find it to be the greatest soundtrack in all of anime.

I am absolutely begging you, please do a video on BECK: Mongolian Chop squad. Its a musical slice of life, but so much more than that. I identify with it so much, especially as a band member who tried extremely hard to make it only for it to never quite get there. Really think you would personally like this one as well.
I'm pretty sure someone else may have already mentioned it, but Kubo is known for being great at character design, but lackluster on drawing backgrounds. That's why it tends to be relatively plain or monochromatic a lot of the time. Also, Kubo got completely burned out working on Bleach, causing a lot the arcs to follow similar patterns.
In hindsight, most Mangas tend to leave out backgrounds.

Kubo mentions in an interview that he doesnt draw backgrounds on purpose and its literally 2 arcs in Bleach that follow the same presentation, the rest is completely different. You should check out One Piece for that matter lol.

Bleach disappointed me. And I wholeheartedly agree with the animation adaptation flaws. Awful filler. Horrible background that hasn’t aged well. And the Soul Reapers get bland with their uniforms. It holds a special place in my heart because it was the Anime that got me back into the medium. But as I read through it’s final arc I just dropped it as a weekly reading. The way they turned Ichigo into a soul reaper hollow super saiyan jinchuriki but such a bad taste in my mouth I couldn’t take it.
Great job balancing the Manga and the Anime in the video Mike. It is crazy to me that the same story concept can be depicted so drastically different.
Bleach is a series I wanted to like, but ultimately just didnt. The same thing happened to me where they go to save Rukia and then my interest just drove off a cliff. There are some really cool concepts and a unique style but it always boils down to Ichiho learns big powerful move to finish enemy off after taking a beating. Rinse, repeat.

Like naruto the show is about him but he had to face major obstacles to get to his dream, and one piece luffy gets his ass whooped and nowhere close to being pirate king. but nooooo ichigo is part this and part that, and it makes him over powered and the savior of all of soul society and human realm. U had zaraki kenpachi who is a BEAST, 0 squad captain who could incinerate the world and call up corpses of those whom he killed, aizen who was literally playing 5D chess on the world but this substitute shinigami with one freaking move comes in and nobody can do anything unless ichigo is there, drives me nuts.
