- Today, I just received this sweet graphite iBook G3 SE, the final version of Apple's clamshell iBook G3. This special edition is even special-er, because aside from having the fastest processor in a clamshell, it's also the only one ever released with a DVD-ROM drive. This means it's the only one that's officially compatible with Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger!
Let's check out the original box it came in, with some cool original documentation, max out the RAM, and fire this thing up!

I still have my iBook g3 in Tangerine from 2001. It’s sitting on my desktop at my parents house in my old bedroom. I was required to have it for college for my digital design and web building classes. I was so excited that my parents got it for me for my high school graduation party. I wish they would still make laptops in these fun bright colors.
Totally
they r doing it with the imacs again, why not do that with the macbooks? they wasted a cool opportunity this year
Bringing back memories. The early DVD ROM drives were really fussy about reading burnt DVDs, if they read them at all.
I just got one of these things myself, you weren't kidding! I wanted to update to the latest version of MacOS 9.2 with my usual CD, but ended up needing to boot from USB via open firmware.
Is that an original Apple iCat, or aftermarket? Judging by the spots, it's running Leopard OS. The laptop looks cool too. 😉
The Bestest OS catto who ever was 🥺🤗💜
I wanted one of these so badly back in the day. Those were just cool on another level.
I remember driving all the way from London to York to pick up a lime green clamshell SE in Lime Green. My dream clamshell and now I have 2. One in Graphite with a cast 7200 rpm hard drive. It was about 60 gig or maybe a bit more can't remember.
Aw man, a Lime SE - that's the dream. Totally worth that drive if you ask me! Beautiful. I love my graphite, but I do wish the rubberized parts were in a little better condition. I've been considering swapping them with case parts from a lime machine.
Really? You bought a lime green clamshell SE _in lime green_ ? Outstanding!
If you hadn't added in that final additional detail that provided further information,
I would've have assumed that you bought that lime green clamshell SE in blueberry!
@@braelinmichelus I have both a graphite and a lime green SE
I picked up one of these exact models around the same time as this posted. I really lucked out because even though it was not in the original box, it was basically unused. There is no scratches, discoloring, or any wear anywhere, including the touchpad. The battery was original with only 8 charge cycles. I run os 9.22, which is super fast on it. It spent its whole life in a cool dry coat closet in a dell bag, forgotten by its owner for 20 years.
That snoring kitty 😻🥰
Great find! I've yet to come across a boxed retro computer for my collection. One of the best things about collecting retro computers is you can do all the upgrades (like you've done with the RAM) that you would never have been able to afford at the time!
Oh yeah that's totally how I think about it too! Never could have afforded this computer back then, let alone maxed out the memory!
I've always wanted one of these, in green.
Nice find! Those 6x Matsh*ta drives are the same ones used in the Pismo PowerBook G3, and they are notorious for their DVD laser going bad - had to replace my drive as it was about 50/50 reading DVDs.
I've found it at least reliably plays movie DVDs! I just got new a battery for it, and it lasts through two movies which is sweet.
Found this video via the post on Low End Mac. Great video! Hope to see more retro vids :) Subscribed too :)
Thank you so much Paul!
No one: ...
Steve Jobs announcing the iBook G3: "It's got a handle."
*Consoomer cheers*
Dude...that box is what drew me in.
Haha what's up Dan!
So said the cat
I think the clamshell iBooks are of an era where the difference between DVD+R and -R mattered. If you burned that Tiger installer to DVD+R, and the drive can’t read that, that might be the cause of the problem.
I miss my childhood! To this day I’m still on Macs, and now every other Apple product. I literally never owned a windows computer and I’m fine with that. Here’s to all of us who thought different.
Hey man, nice score! I was wondering who snatched that one up:) I'm in the process of making new emblems for these.
Thanks! That's amazing, how are you making them? Are we going to get a vid? :)
@@ActionRetro I can post a video, but it really is simple, I'm using a plain open one piece mold and using Smooth-On Cast 300 resin. I'm just waiting on the resin pigment to get here. I received some last week, but the inside of the plastic envelope (Amazon shipping!) looked like a rainbow when I opened it, every container was crushed:(
I’ve always wanted one of these
I just saw one of these on ebay the other day. I wonder if this is the same one I looked at.
Ooooh, pretty...
i guess the ibook looks nice too
@Zayn Sutton you're right, nobody cares
@Fabian Leonard This is so fake
I had this exact same machine in Lime Green. I loved it, with I still had it!
Great video! I have the 366 Mhz Firewire Indigo Clamshell and the non-FW 366 Mhz Graphite Clamshell as well! The Firewire model was also surprisingly supported in Tiger as well since Apple had the rare CD pack available that had the installation spread across 4 discs (Though on the discs they locked out the previous iBook models), something that I grabbed off of the Macintosh Garden and used to get it up and running! These are such great machines and I am still on the lookout for one of the 466 Mhz beauties like what you have! Thanks for making all this wonderful old Mac content, I have been binge-watching your videos since I stumbled across your fantastic channel today! :)
Thank you so much, that really means a lot to me! Meeting other people who love these old Macs is my favorite part of making these videos :)
6:49... That start up sound never gets old
Yep. And I enjoy listening to it whenever I boot up my MacBook Air

Outstanding video with, the last and best version of the Clamshell iBook G3. Have always had mixed feelings about the Clamshell model. On one hand, I feel in love with its looks and design from the day they were introduced by Steve Jobs. But, on the other hand it appears that, my head always guides me to the professional laptop models. So, during this time period selected the powerbook G3 Firewire (the last of the black powerbooks and the first model that supported an internal airport card), why,? Because the powerbook had a larger screen with a higher resolution, two USB ports, two Fire-wire 400 ports, card slot, IR port, two "Hot" swap bays (for an extra battery, floppy drive, zip drive, super disk drive, etc.). However, perhaps after my retirement in a few years, I will be able to add the ibook G3 Clamshell to my vintage apple computer collection.
I was always really disappointed by the 800x600 display, and the weight of it. Back then, I had a Titanium Powerbook, which felt like a computer from the future at the time and still feels like a modern laptop. However, the Clamshell is just so unique, and looking back it's amazing how successful it was. There was never anything even close, back then or even today. That's why I love it now, I think. It's cool to see how far I can push such limited and unusual hardware that's so iconic.
Back in the 1990's, my co-workers were always surprised to hear me say that, I loved the cool look of the colorful ibooks but did not like at all the CRT imac or the later CRT emac. At the time, I preferred the model that came right after my 5500 All-in-One which, was the G3 All-in-One system. It had the same 15 inch screen and CD-ROM as an imac but also came with an internal floppy drive, zip drive, AV card, and three open PCI card slots to add USB ports and Fire-wire 400 ports. If, I pick up in retirement an ibook 466 Special Edition for my collection one good thing is that, I know all of my G3 powerbook software will also run just fine on this model.
Looks like it's pretty clean!
what a pretty cat!
I’ve always been surprised they didn’t release a red/ruby colour iBook like the iMac G3 had.
I remember wanting one of these awesome pieces of tech so bad back in 1999/2000 (I was 15/16). Thanks for sharing. I think that model Mac had the ability to boot into what's called Single User Mode by holding Command+S at boot up and it'll take you to a command prompt interface where you can change the password there. I'm fairly certain you don't need to boot up with a Mac OS X install disc to do it. I've not owned a PowerPC Mac in ages so I could be 100% wrong, but my memory is usually pretty good. I actually watched your DC Power/mSATA upgrade video before this one, but still cool nonetheless. Lastly, how did you burn that Tiger DVD you were attempting to boot from? I'm guessing the way you burned it it didn't create a proper boot loader/sector on the DVD, hence why the iBook was all WTF MATE? I know you mentioned in the later upgrade video that you FireWire Target Disk Mode installed Tiger, but I'm just curious how you burned that Tiger install DVD. Cheers!
Thanks! I burned it on Linux, so I think you're right. I've since switched to a FireWire drive with multiple installers for different versions of OS X on different partitions, so no more issues like that :) I also scored an original Tiger DVD with a recently PowerBook I picked up.
@@ActionRetro I have my day 1 retail Tiger/PPC DVD still as well! I actually preordered it and went to my then local Apple store to pick it up lol
I was hoping for some Single User Mode action too, just in case there was any interesting rare software like vintage utilities. That’s a function of Unix, so it should work on any non-encrypted OS X installation! But oh well, same result I guess. Just more effort :)
Damn these old machines were noisy buggers. Funny that I don’t remember that from back in the day. I had the lime one 😊
Oh nice color!
i have yet to watch the other clamshell videos you've made but i actually quite like the discoloured graphite panels. reminds me of some highly figured claro walnut
My iMac couldn’t boot from Panther CD 1 but I could install Jaguar on it just fine. I had to use my Tiger DVD over another computer using target disk mode because Apple thought it was a good idea to ship the last ones with only CDROM or CDRW, no DVD-ROM.
Target disk mode is the greatest thing.
I've always wanted a clamshell iBook, preferably in Tangerine Orange.
It's actually even easier on modern Macs to bypass a password. You just have to log into the recovery and type a single command into the terminal. Don't even need a CD anymore.
That’s disturbing if true
@@MaxOakland Always enable Filevault, this will protect you from this issue..
@@MaxOakland the same utility has been able to remove Unix users’ passwords if ran as root since its inception :) OS X just inherited it. Disk encryption is the only way to avoid it!
Such a cute cat
You’ve heard of Doja Cat, only Action Retro brings you Dozing Cat
Do you still have the box and would you sell it LOL. Wonderful computer.
This is the computer i made my mom buy me to take to collage.
Great Find Very Nice Clam Shell Nice Kitty Hope You Win The Mic Today
Thank you David, I love these clamshells!
Every version of windows nt could be cracked in a similar fashion, sadly this is also the case for BSD, Solaris, and Linux.
I personally don’t think it matters. You could read the data anyway, not much can be done about that - the only real fix is encryption, e.g. using FileVault or BitLocker, which obviously prevents this.
I have had DVD drives in PC's that have stopped being able to read DVD's but read CD's just fine idk how it happens but it does
I got one of these new that was sitting in the back if hhgregg for 20 years.s it didn't work but since I got it brand new the apple store had to repair it xD
So with these that translucent graphite plastic turns green?
Interesting! never seen that, is there any fix?
No it came in different colours
That was one of the things that were special about the iMac and the iBook
@@hamzasafdari9360 Yeah but these graphite colored ones all seem to be turning green with age, must be something about the dyes used.
@@lemagreengreen that’s the same as yellowing on white plastics, dark blue/grey plus yellow equals greenish
Tiger also came on four CDs
I have this, still ok,is a hybrid an iBook more similar to PowerBook hardware and yes,dvd vs cd
Sean-DO NOT EAT that silica gel! I KNOW it looks tasty…
Didn't OS X Tiger also come on CD-rom?
i know this is an old vid, but could you please link the nvme2ide adapter and the ssd you used?
hi i have this my coolection :) 576mb ram 10gb hdd and os9.2 good old fun :) my question for i plan put this a 60gb hdd from treatment? and second quest from any optical drive you know this? much better me this a cd-rw like a dvd rom thanks a forward answer :)
I was so sad mine broke. I still have it but everything I turn it on it says no HD disk or something so I don't use it.
Is the 466MHz version noticably faster than the other, slower models?
I have one❤❤
I'm jealous haven't got the box
Looks like a Sex in the City laptop lmao
That was a powerbook G3 I think in sex and the city
3D point a replacement logo?
hi my quest for optical drive change did it this model back cd-rom drive?
It's a shame the blue turned yellow. Is there a way to dye the plastic blue again?
Now install Limewire lol older versions still work
Where did you get it
eBay find :)

silica gel? ... you mean snacks.
As of today, there is 1 graphite clamshell and a keylime one on eBay. If you did not find it it is because I am commenting this on the 3rd or June 2021
