I remember Rener Gracie on the GracieBreakdown channel speaking of a 65 y.o. black belt named John Boyd. He was struggling and was finding it hard to beat blue belts. Rener told him that for every 10 years and 20 pounds, you have to treat it like another belt level. I will add, for every 20 pounds of unhealthy weight and every year of inexperience you opponent has over you, add even more belt levels. Essentially, everyone you face will be extremely, extraordinarily difficult until you get experience and lose weight. This is going to be trail by fire. You were in the military, imagine doing boot camp/basic at 38, 40 or 42 after no activity. It can be done but yes, you must give yourself time, patience and apply wisdom. If it takes 2-4 years on average to get a blue belt, give yourself 4-8..mabey even 8-12 years. And yes, yoga, tai chi and other low intensity workouts are the way to go.

I'm a 48nyear old purple belt, and I had a list of injuries that had temporarily stopped progression in BJJ. Then, just when I was getting ready to go back after messing up my back, I was hit by a drunk driver that required me to have shoulder repair surgery.
It's now beeb 8 months since my surgery, and I back healthy again and ready to hit the mats again.
Bro, it's a setback, but I think you still have plenty of time to get back on the saddle. Do what's necessary and get your injuries repaired and treated. You still have time!
We half to be mindful that we are not in our 20s and 30s. Our training methodologies need to change as we get older. Rolling doesn't half to be super intense. Like Rener Gracie says, "Keep it playful!"

Friend, I'm 47, been studying cumulatively for over a year. You need to be in the weight room at least two days a week, because your muscles are deteriorating as you get older, you only should be in the BJJ dojo twice a week rolling hard and on the third, go slow or just drill. Look into Yoga for repair... You won't make it in martial arts at your age without weightlifting, yoga, changes to your diet. Take a few months to repair body, look into yoga, and come back with balanced training.

    42. It's been 6 months since I started training. I've been training 4 days a week. Whenever I feel any joint pain or muscle stiffness, I take a few days off and then gradually increase my training again. I tap early and focus on breathing and technique. I only stick with the techniques taught by the coaches and professors, and so far, that has helped me avoid injuries.

    1. Walking, swimming, bicycling, stair steps 50 per day all good for cardio and low impact.
    2. Strength training with weights low to moderate intensity.
    3. Incline machines at a gym.
    4. All these will help lesson injuries as we all get older.

I separated both my shoulders when I first started training in my late 30's. That being said I haven't had a serious injury in 6 years. There are ways of rolling to avoid injury. I talk about it quite a bit on my channel. Also I demonstrate with my rolling style against younger stronger opponents. You can do it just stay calm and cool. Avoid standing take downs and competing.

It sounds like you got a good plan and lots of good advice. Ideally it would be best to train with guys your own age who know what they're doing and have injuries to work around as well. Good luck to you!

@@thesecurityguardchannel Also wanted to say the point you made about a small # of techniques is spot on. 1 or 2 takedowns with many set ups. 1 or 2 subs etc then to those untrained those are unstoppable. You might not need these techniques in real life until you're 60 - you want to be healthy then too!

Strength training is probably the best way to reduce injury.... rather, being strong is. Strength training while doing jiu-jitsu can be a bit tricky, but even one good session per week (preferably two) can go a long way. A stronger body can handle more external force. Muscles, bones, connective tissues.....can all get stronger with strength training.

I can say DMSO for muscle pain. It is classified and a solvent and used on race horses. Liquid that absorbs extremely well with human skin. DO NOT use anything else with it.

I had another blue who is OLDER than me, trained LONGER and we're in the GI do a can opener on me ten days before I'm doing an IBJJF open. We're in the morning class which is usually old guys. He doesn't compete. The owner of the gym didn't even want to talk to him about it. I have neck pain every day now after it. He gets his purple belt. I don't even get a stripe. I'm not training there anymore.

    My Dear Brother Damien,
God has given you only one body.....you must take care of it!!!
Don't destroy the beautiful body and machine that God created!!!
God rested on the 7 the Day, so you must rest.
Okay three times a week , but you must rest on the days off.
    Resting means doing nothing.
    Please remember my Mom's expression:
"Petit a petit, l'oiseaux fait son nid."

"A man's gotta know his limitations.".
Don't quit, but you must know your limitations.

Sorry, this is sweet but do not do NOTHING on rest days. That’s an absolute fallacy. You need to move every day - rest days just mean you’re not taxing your body. But don’t stop moving.

  • @OhYaSure
    @OhYaSure Месяц назад +1

Are you taking creatine? Highly recommend for a safe, non-hormone influencing supplement to help with recovery - which is the biggest issue with us over 40s.
Also, are you strength training at all? Or have any strength foundation? I get more aches and pains when I’m not doing any resistance training (specifically compound barbell exercises).
    It helps dramatically.
Edit: posted a bit too quick.
Start a 5x5 workout plan bro. 2x a week + BJJ. Take it slow. Learn the form, then slowly add weight. Once you build your strength foundation you can do some hypertrophy and/or mobility specific exercises. When you get to week 4/5/6 in strength, ease up on the BJJ rolls. Then take your de load week and start hypertrophy/mobility training for 4-6 weeks.
Eventually you can just get to a maintenance level where you’re moving your body with resistance but not taxing it.
    Good luck bro.
43 year old one stripe white belt (2nd stripe coming soon)
Edit again: lol, watched another of your vids. You clearly have a strength foundation.
Get that going again bro. When I don’t lift 2x a week my body just starts to hurt with BJJ. More specifically my shoulders. Compound lifts ftw!
