- Step one in our bass boat retrofit is a new trolling motor. We're upgrading from the Maxxum Pro to an Ultrex 112. Matt explains each step of the process as he shows just how quickly and painlessly it can be done. Start to finish the installation takes less than an hour.
If you've considered the Ultrex for your next trolling motor its definitely worth the investment! Once you've experienced spot lock, heading, and a few of the other features there really is no going back. It adds an incredible level of convenience to your day on the water.

We use the 112 lb with 52" Shaft. If you are combining with Humminbird Electronics be sure to use the "Link" version of the motor so you gain all of the available features.

So after about 8 hours I was cursing Matt Allan, although I was upgrading several other items in the area. So excited to get out on the water with my new Ultrex. Thanks Matt. Hope to come fish with you someday soon on Chickamauga Lake.
I don't even own a boat and I had to watch this vid. Matt is a gifted public speaker I've come to find. Bravo boys!
Love the new boat stuff! Your right Matt it is a fear of the unknown and not wanting to mess the escape up. Thanks for showing me that it’s not hard. I don’t have to spend more money going to the shop when I can do it myself.
You are so right about people being afraid to work on their own boats. I have a good friend who is a Master mechanic for Ford and when it comes to his boat he has me do all the work. As long as I can find a manual or some sort of Internet instructions I have no problem trying to tackle any project at all. I had rebuild the motor and one of my pickup trucks by just using the Haynes manual.
I enjoy your videos and I'm really glad to see you changed out that trolling motor that came with that boat. I know you were saying it was 36 volts shall I guess you really didn't have much of a choice LOL. Perhaps you'll find somebody in the market for one and recoup some of your money. Look forward to seeing future videos.
For what its worth, I found this video super interesting. I have always wanted to do work on my own boat, but feared doing something to screw up the decking, the fiberglass, the wiring etc. This showed me that its not that complicated. Hopefully you will show us the videos of you mounting your electronics on the boat. That is another area where I have had to pay top dollar to get electronics, tranducers and wiring installed. Running wires is the biggest struggle in the home project realm, ie how to get underneath the decking to run wires. We have long winters here in Maine and I would love to be able to tackle my own boat upgrade projects in my garage to help pass the months were the water on my lakes are frozen. Thanks for the video and insight. Extremely helpful. Great deviation video from the traditional how to fish videos.
Great video! When you run your electronics could you show more in depth of what you're doing, like what size wire, whether you use a seperate fuse box or run direct to battery, run a switch to all depth finders, what connectors, how to prevent interference, etc. There aren't any videos that I have found that show this detail and I think you could probably explain it the best. Most of the videos out there just say run the wires and you're good to go, but if you haven't done it before, it can be a daunting task.
Thank you!
I know you guys are always looking for new video ideas. How about one on buying your first boat. I am sure a lot of co-anglers would be interested in seeing your ideas and experience in working through their first purchase. Your videos are great, I always learn something!
I do installs as a side gig to my teaching career. I learned through working at a local marine shop and trolling motor repair shop for several years and now about 20 years on my own. Take my word for it, the majority of folks don't need to work on their own boats. In fact most boat dealers don't need to be installing trolling motors and the new units.
What you pay to have it done correctly is much less expensive than what can go wrong with a bad install. :-)
Matt, love your videos! The best on RUclips. I am in the middle of an Ultrex install. Replacing my old motor guide tour. So glad I saw your post. I was concerned about how far over the gunwall the head sits, But I see yours is the same way! Good enough for Matt Allen. good enough for me! Thanks buddy.
Glad to see ya getting back to normal. Hope all is well in TB land.
Glad too see you back on the water on your own boat brother!
Great day to start off with a TacticalBassin video. Thank you Matt and Tim for everything!
Matt and Allen😂😂😂😂😂
I meant Matt and Tim. This video was uploaded too early in the morning for me. Lol.
I like the use of baking soda and water..... as a dealer technician ive seen all kinds of corrosion cleaning products. Nothing works better than baking soda and water and a lil dielectric grease. Good video matt.
Matt, Fastest superspeed trolling motor swap I have ever witnessed. LOL thanks for making it interesting.
This is great stuff!!! Tactical gets better and better...really gotta start saving up for an Ultrex ... and Talons .... and new sonar. Damn. Nice vid Matt!
Tuesday morning BONUS VIDEO!!!!!!! Made my morning again fellas!
Okay, I know this is a 5 year old video, but I just got a new boat and was looking for any install videos you guys have.
Got me a 2004 Stratos 285 Pro XL…..hope it treats me good!
I always work on my own boat. They only thing I don’t fix is outboard issues. I take it to the mechanic for that. Everything else I do. It’s fun and enjoy it and it saves money. I was out the other day I’m pretty heavy rains and my bilge pump wouldn’t shoot water out the side of the boat. Dam bugs clogged it with crap. I used a drain declogger and cleared it. Working on your boat isn’t hard. Learn as you go as I did.
Wow matt! You blew my mind i like the fix it video! Great job sir!!
Should unhook the negative cable first not the positive. An ungrounded battery can’t short out your wrench if it was to touch something else while on the positive terminal. Especially on a 36 volt system which has a ton of amperage. Safety first😁. Love the videos, always informative and that is one of the easiest projects to do on your boat. Won’t be without my ultrex
Hey Matt, if you plan on fishing some very rough water, I would suggest a double strap and the hold-down from T-H Marine Troll-Tamer Trolling Motor Locking System. Standard operated system for big water here in Michigan. Great video.
Nice fitting mine soon top tips to inspire confidence
Great quick video . I am planning to swap out my Maxxum for a Minnkota ultrex we’re you able to use the same holes in the deck to bolt on the ultrex
Great video, I plan to upgrade to an Ultrex 80lb soon
Matt, a little conductive anti-corrosive grease on your ring tongue terminals up to the wire insulation and you won't have to worry about corrosion.
4:16 You better watch out for them wild black Panthers Matt!
Hey I believe there was just a post on BBC in the champ forum about that tough breaking. Might want to check that out
the cat at 2:27 hahahhah great video math im thinking to go from a 40 lb to a 75lb troll but no room for extra battery
Thanks man you explain things really well I love the structure of your videos great job as always!! Go hook a biggin
Cool to see you getting your new boat all in order brotha. Hope to fish with ya one day, im in tahoe.
I do a lot of work on my boat myself.
Not quite as easy to swap a MG Tour for an ultrex.
Completely different bolt patterns.
Just did it in about 6 hrs.
I just got my first bass tracker and picked up a motorguide xi5 i'm going to install. I was a little worried but Im sure I can figure it out. Going with a quick release as well.
PLEASE make a video showing how you run that transducer cord (and new electronics if that's what you're doing). I just bought a used boat and will need to install a graph on the front. Thanks!
Matt has anyone ever told you that your a bad A**? You make even the simple things sound interesting!! Lol take care guys
Calm down pal I was being sarcastic.
And that's a serious nice setup. Happy for you God bless.
One piece of advise learned from my mistakes.. Dont forget to put on the velcro strap!!!
Good approach, but didn't comment on securing bolts that mount the unit. It seems that you're working by feel it get bolts secured. I have a tracker boat, and even with panel removed, it's an effort to reach bolts, mounting washers etc. Also you may need a extended socket to tighten bolts and a possible second person to turn to topside screws while one holds bottom side with a wrench. Perhaps that wasn't a problem on your Bass boat.
There have been so many people have issues with the Ultrex. Good luck I’m just unsure on it
I’m guessing the new mount fit the holes from the old one? If not, would you have epoxied the old ones?
Thanks Matt great video. Are you still doing guided trips.
+1 how can we schedule a guide trip with you!?
Yes, I'm still guiding. Unfortunately with the crash I've been unable to work the last few months but expect to be back up in running in the next month.
This may sound like a dumb question, but is there any reason why everyone mounts the motor on the port side of the boat and not off the starboard? Do the motors only mount that one direction?
Thanks for this video. Good information.
Wow, there is more comments for a trolling motor swap than for a squarebills video
Well yeah, one is a bit more complicated than the other lol
Since you made that look so easy, you want to come to NC and help me with mine? Lol.
Amazing what you can do in under a minute😲. No seriously that divider-block where the motor terminators were connected looked awful. I imagine running 50 Amps or something of that order through that😨. No electricity/ power wiring is NOT complicated, but sometimes people use such shitty components. A trolling motor 1000$, a fish finder 1500$ and less than 100$ for electrical connection/ wiring. And sometimes people don’t put a FUSE in there wiring especially high current circuitry like trolling/ starter or power pole motors. Well enjoy your fishing 😎👍
Did the mounting bolts line up being they were both minn Kota or did you have to drill new. That’s my fear. I do not like drilling into my boat.
Have you ever tried halo rods cause they make a mean rod in the $150 price range.
What if you can’t reach where the backing button would go?
It wasn't clear if you installed the MK with I-Pilot Link or not. Did you install the GPS antenna? If so, where and how was that done? Did you use the same bolts to install the mount or did you use new SS with lock nuts? I have more questions when you get to installing the HBs. :) Good video with a great explanation for DYI on the boat. Hope you continue this with the rest of the restore and upgrades. Thanks to Tim and yourself.
Just give the puck power, and it'll connect through Bluetooth. Just watch out for magnetic fields.
Question: Is the Ultrex the better improvement over Talons? I know you did this first but which is more useful if you were doing one or the other. I have an 8ft Talon but want two Talons and 12 to 15ft but considering this first.
Did you mount the motor and then somewhere off-camera unbolt it and run the safety strap back underneath
yup :-)
I'm looking to do this project later this year. Do most Minn Kota holes line up?
Cape Nelson yes all minn Kota holes will line uo
@@andrwhppe thanks! Now to convince the wife.. lol
LOL at the freaking cat watching you work the whole time
You talk about hooking up the puck for the ultrex but I thought it was linked to the HELIX/SOLIX for position?
Thomas Robey : i think it is hooked up to his SOLIX 15 but it needs that puck (second GPS) for SPOTLOCK. It’s closer to the bow and it needs to now the axle bow-stern for exact manoeuvring.
Kayak fishing For predators it would still spot lock with it though right? I only ask because I’m purchasing a boat with ultrex upgrade and puck upgrade is only available with Lowrance. I went duel birds cause that’s what I’ve had before.
@@thomasrobey9851 GPS is in the head of the ultrex- it will spot lock without it. The puck should come with the motor. It just tells the motor what way the boat is facing for the jog feature. Mount it just about anywhere on the boat-does NOT have to be by motor.
Do these style videos for all the installs
When are you planning to get the power poles???
Are you going to put hummingbird Solix again? Or do something different?
Matt, why’d you choose the ultrex before any graphs? I’m in a similar spot and just curious as to which I should do first?
He had the ultrex and hummingbirds on his old boat before the wreck. I'm guessing hes waiting on the new birds to be released but he already knows what electronics hes using. They make an ultrex specifically for hummingbirds and then another one that can be used with lowrances, garmins, whatever u want.
Good stuff👍🏾
add dielectric grease to all connections - especially on batteries
Maybe you can do a video on lawn care slash bass boat repair.
Is this a 52” or 45” shaft?
I thought you said you were going to run wires during the install, but I sure didn't see it or you fast forward through it.
Fast forwarded through it, sorry
The shops charge a ton of money. My buddy told me a guy he knew had a local shop install a new trolling motor and they charged him $1,000!! That’s ridiculous. Things like this aren’t hard. Just gotta use your brain!!!
awesome thanks!
Thanks.
What are you going to do with your old trolling motor???
The ONLY thing better then a bonus TB video.... NOTHING
Not awful, but didn't really show anything, just fast forwarded through the actual technical steps. You should have stopped and at least explained and shown 1 bolt in detail, then FF the others. Same with the wiring....show one step up close and the FF through the rest.
minn kota edge trolling engine boat
you should have discounnted the negative gound from the battery
Nice.
I'm too old to work that fast. Can you help me? lol
When did you remember you forgot the velcro strap?????
😂 Late... like always
Good vid #1
What about the kayaks!?! Haha
I can't even figure ut how to hook up my new fish finder on my yak.. D :
Good job skipping over 3/4 of the process
Trying to sell that boat to a High school angler?👀
MATT!! WalMart batteries?? PM me I can send you coupons for 50% off Advance Auto Parts batteries. I am a GM for them.
Those are the stock batteries, they need to go. That's awesome man, no idea how to PM but my email is matt@tacticalbassin.com
Walmart batteries are great. I am marine electrician with 40 years experience and I use them almost exclusively in not only boats but cars and trucks too
Tanks and Critters send me some coupons. gmwoolems@aol.com
This guy's kinda fruity
Sorry but this guy is an awful teacher.
Would be nice if you showed video of taking it to the lake and stuff like that but otherwise good video
Nice
