A couple more: You can blend watercolor pencil with a paper stump before wetting it to get different color gradations. Also, instead of shaving the point you can use a small piece of sandpaper - different grits for different size pigment particles.
I love watching someone who is so obviously passionate about their art as you are, and who combines that with equal passion to share it with others. Thank you for enriching our lives :)
I don't work with watercolour pencils that much, mainly because I don't know how to use them properly. This video has been a game changer. They maybe basic but for someone like me who is a novice, these neat little tips change everything.
I just found your channel and I am so grateful 💞 As a long time fan of Tolkien and The Hobbit I found the painting techniques you shared in this video to be inspirational. Thank you so much 🥰
LOVED your video on Hobbit Doors. Colorful, informative, and gave me lots of ideas. I really appreciate your efficiency with time. This short video was so helpful, without dragging on and on. Thank you!
Nice demo. I didn't hear you explain that Derwent Inktense is INK pigment, and will stain the paper and cannot be lifted like watercolor pencils. Good for laying down a base layer that will not mix with subsequent layers after drying. I love Inktense and use them often.
Thank you. Yes you are right they are ink. In another video I lifted them after they dried and it worked, which was actually surprising and I wonder if it depends what paper they are used on or for how long they were dry for.
Loving these Hobbit doors, I already used watercolor pencils for customizing dolls but I wanted to get into using them on paper in conjunction with my regular watercolors, inks and markers. This makes them sound a lot more promising than what I had thought they'd be like!
I really enjoyed this. I'm learning about layering and blending with watercolor pencils. Thank you so much. The doors from the »Lord of Rings « looks beautiful.
So many useful tips. I have had watercolour pencils in the press for the last year and only took them out last weekend because of your skillshare class. Loved trying the apple and can’t wait for more videos from you. Thanks so much.
I love this presentation on techniques with watercolor pencils. I've had these pencils for some time now but never really got the hang of using them. Also - your Hobbit doors from the Lord of the Rings is awesome!
These are the prettiest Hobbit doors I've ever seen 😍 What I also like about WC pencils is that you never loose anything when the tip breaks. Just use the broken part like normal watercolour.
@@paintingandchocolate you sure will ☺️ I am currently doing a long set of lessons but have some of yours saved and I will do your fun ones to break up the other one lol. You’re videos are nice to watch ☺️💖🌸

I've now realized that I've not been using the full potential of my watercolor pencils. I have to try them someday. Also, the reason for my multiple comments is that I hope they're better for the engagement than one long one. You're criminally underrated here.
Thank you so much for the encouragement I appreciate it! Please let me know what you would like to see on my channel, it helps me to create better videos 🙂
These were some great techniques and a few I haven't used before. You should try the white inktense block if like going over top with white details (or mixing it with other colors) as it is much more opaque then the white pencil :)
Wow, super, concise tutorial. Your art will grace any wall. I aspire to your standards. Many thanks for taking such valuable time to instruct us mere mortals to attain much improved techniques. I’ve subscribed. The Hobbit doors are magical 🙏
I remember these doors well from Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. I love the magic of activating watercolor pencils, and enjoyed watching it happen to the doors. Also, something I had never tried was spraying with water, and “lifting” with watercolor pencils. Thanks for the wonderful video!

Thank you for your inspirational tutorial. Refreshingly different- I learnt a lot ! Magical round doors as in The Hobbit and all the Magical movies Tolkiens series. ❤

@BumblebeeFern : Derwent watercolour pencils aren't nearly as good as good as similarly priced w/c pencils - Caran D'ache Supracolor and Faber Castell's Albrecht Durer, and Staedler Aquarelle, I've been working with W/C pencils for years, and got quite excited when Derwent brought out the current set, and like many ArtTubers, was very disappointed, because they are just not in the same league. @@BumblebeeFern Hi again. You might like to buy a few of the Supracolor and Albrecht Durer open stock, to play with and see how they feel. I enjoy both and use them interchangeably. Try just picking out a few of your most-used ordinary pencil colours and work from there - the cool and warm primaries and some earth tones, plus a black and a white is a good place to begin, and will give you some good mixing choices, either with blending, layering or on some scrap watercolour paper. They don't blend in the same way when dry, as they are pigment based, not oil or wax, but they will blend well with light layering one colour over another. (I use mine as much as a dry medium as a wet one, because there's no 'shine' on them as there is with coloured pencils). This video's a great starting place - doing the examples along with Francoise will give you some good idea of how they work. Always use an ordinary watercolour soft brush to activate them, though, because water brushes tend to be too firm and lift off a lot of pigment. Also, add a couple of drops of glycerine to the water, to improve the dissolving and flow of the pencils' pigments. Your local pharmacy may supply a small bottle they'll make up for you, or look on the supermarket cooking shelves (may be more expensive). I tend to try to help out where I can, especially where watercolour pencils are concerned, because there isn't a great deal of help 'out there' here on ArtTube, or elsewhere for them. I am still picking up tips 25 years on, for that reason, and there are always new things to learn, whatever the medium, I think, and it's fun to pass them on! 😊
These techniques are really useful and inspiring to me, thanks so much for making this video. Your Lord of the rings doors are very inspiring also, I have just recently returned from a trip to New Zealand where we visited the Hobbiton Movie set, and other places that feel like you are visiting Middle Earth for real. such a beautiful place.

Definitely would love to see that!! Do you prefer 100% cotton paper cold-pressed or what do you prefer for the watercolor pencils?
A couple more: You can blend watercolor pencil with a paper stump before wetting it to get different color gradations. Also, instead of shaving the point you can use a small piece of sandpaper - different grits for different size pigment particles.
Ah yes thank you! I've seen the latter done for regular colored pencils and graphite.
