please consider an organization for boys. I think young black boys need more support. look at how black women graduating from college outnumber black men. I hope you can find a way. blessings.
+Thomas Kenney Jr Yes I agree. Black boys get left out of the equation so often. For instance, in my city they have Black Girls Code and they also have a SEEK program for girls to encourage them to enter engineering. There's nothing like either one of those programs for Black Boys. If I had more expertise in coding I would look for a sponsor and try to do it my myself.
+gacaptain Get the experience, then, and do it! There are tons of free coding workshops to be found online, which will teach you all you need to know to land a decent entry level position. Then work your way up from there. Don't wait for someone else to do it; be the change you wish to see. :)
***** Thanks. I know just what you mean but my field is mechanical engineering. I do a little very limited code work on my job but am mostly involved with other things. If anything, I will probably wind up mentoring African American Boys in that area (engineering) one day. But I would love to see the same thing offered for Boys to get into coding as well in my city. Realistically, I don't think I could do both effectively.
Enjoyed watching this video!! It's was so inspiring. I'm a Black girl and I want to learn how to code. One setback, Im older than than the girls depicted in the video. I'm debating with myself is it really worth learning. I do work in the tech field, mainly hardware, but I want to move up and learn more. Thanks Kimberly Bryant for starting this program. Have inspired me!
Try Codecademy (I tried it last year without knowing anything about it or about coding). I'll admit I dropped it after a few weeks, but I'm still interested and really I should start it again. I can't promise it's gonna make you a pro, but it's free, so it's a good start to see how it works.
Reddogg, I agree. I am 6'4" tall and I was handed a basketball from the time I could walk. I have a 138 IQ and no one noticed that only my large body that happened to be black. I will never place a ball of any type before my children. We lose more PHD's from our people trying for the NBA and NFL.
It's because a lot of them don't have access to decent education. The public schools in those areas are atrocious and private schools very expensive. Believe it or not there are people who wish to keep it this way.
I LIKE THIS. I have two daughters (not in technology) but they are grown in other progressive fields of industry so teach your young girls to code....and the return on investment will pay for itself. I am an IT Professional learning Linux OS in my late 40's so apply yourself and be persistent. Learn how to deal with people in business as a professional in your attitudes and demeanor...the Industry is seeking these kind of professionals to get business done and make money.
If the economic playing field was truly "equal" then people like Kimberly Bryant would not have to feel it necessary to develop programs to bring largely omitted subject matter to those who are not getting the exposure that so many others enjoy. This is a simple case of, "you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't." One the one hand non-blacks feel that when people of color "seem" to aspire to generational welfare - for example - it is appalling and those folk just need to pull their own weight by becoming "gainfully" employed. "Just do 'something' I don't care what, I just don't want my tax dollars paying for your apathetic life style." Then someone comes along and sees that the prevailing school system in which her people's children are attending is, more often than not, peddling an out dated lackluster curriculum and poorly administered to boot. She bravely musters up the courage to address this long standing issue with a solution and she's being branded as a raciest. You cannot have it both ways! Either educate "everyone equally" or those who realize that "that's not gonna happen in regard to their people" are going to devise solutions to do it them self's! That's called enabling a people to become self sufficient, confident and able to express their intellectual abilities of which this society subtly deprives them on a very wide and deliberate scale. Just filling jobs with fast food, large operations like Walmart, K-mart, ect., are not where excelling career opportunities that pay well exits. Oh, they're wonderful ways of building a strong work ethic for after-school and during college to earn money. But young minds need to be exposed to various healthy intellectual challenges and disciplines in order to thrive and grow! Take this away and what you have is a largely deprived people who really never see another side other than sports and entertainment as their way to meaningful and fulfilling life choices! There's so much more out there and I for one am glad that folk like, "Kimberly Bryant" are creating those opportunities for those who are largely denied. To the haters: Stop being fearful of others, unlike your self's, discovering what this great big world has to offer! The GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in YESHUA created the universe in all its splendor and abundances for all to embrace and enjoy! Don't worry...there's plenty to go around. After all, GOD is not human so I know that this is so.
I know I thought she was in her 30's. Then I heard her say child of the '60s.... born a few months before the demise of mlk. Good Lord it is true black don't crack.
Yay! For girls in games. Love WoW, and I'm female. The guys on there are often shocked. I encourage Kimberly Bryant's daughter and cohort to make their dreams come through. Own technology--or as they say in WoW, pwn it!
Great TED Talk. Women are so underrepresented in coding and programming, and women and girls of color are vastly underrepresented. Unfortunately, coding and programming is still thought of as a boys career and, saturated with Indians. Thank goodness people, especially women and girls, are starting to explore these fields and learning code and programming.
OOoooo~~~ I want to be a part of that organization!! I'm too old to learn to code from them (even though I wanna work with technology in the future) But if I cant do that, I want to help in some way it sounds lovely :D
I thank you for your balanced response! The last one I think the bible was quoted I don't know much about the bible but I think it was not written to be used to spout a rant on RUclips or the personal attack from the other and ends his rant with peace!! WHY CAN'T ALL THE YOUNG PEOPLE THAT ARE JUST EXISTING IN INTER CITY AREAS ACCOMPLISH THE SAME AS THIS WONDERFUL YOUNG LADY? HOW MANY DRS, SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS ,ETC ARE WASTING THEIR POTENTIAL ?
The assumption being the things that hold us back are inhuman, so how can you exclude things from your reasoning? As opposed to, this is what holds you back from being able to reason.
Ok what ever way you would like to spin it! I was just going on the theory if it is not right for one group to do it then it is not right for another and vice versa! People who run business normally but not always hire the person who is best for the job! That makes there company money and keeps them with a roof over heads and if you want a job it's best not turning up having a positive racism chip on your shoulder! All races have done bad things if you can't move on the past will be your future! Stop think before you automatically disagree.
Yep she has helped out a few a girls and made them realise that everybody can be judged by the colour of there skin because if you have a blacks only must be right to have the opposite! What about half casts are they aloud in but only for half the time? Are also banning Asians? How do you decide if there are to many for the class? Do you start with the darkest and work down! Help kids by dividing people?
+Adam Radford It's not racist my friend. Black people are the only group of people that are still begging and pleading for jobs from you the white man who is consistently suppressing opportunities for my people, do your research into how many black graduates apply for jobs in silicon valley and the ratio of blacks to white in companies like google etc. This organisation is teaching a new generation of black girls who are the steel tip of discrimination in western society, with know-how and with this know-how these young girls will create jobs for our own people instead of begging the white man for a job they don't want to give us. Every other culture looks after there own people first except black people and if you think i am lying go find the 10 nearest chinese take aways or restaurants and observe whether there are any black or white people working in the joint. Go to any predominantly Italian, Irish or German neighbourhoods and you'll find nothing but business set up by those people to serve the immediate needs of there own people. The last time black people had a thriving successful community, do you know what happened?, white people bombed it from the air and destroyed a highly successful black society destroying established businesses in the community. Go check black wall street, just put it into google and see what comes up as it is something that fox news doesn't want people like you to know. Maybe you need to think outside your own racial privilege something that i know is hard for you to do as it's free and indoctrinated into your psyche from birth Peace!
Isabella Cerff Apparently you are not aware that there are several organizations of ALL GIRLS who code. You obviously missed the point of this organization which targets girls of color who don't have access and/or not aware of opportunities in this field, and most organizations do not reach or give opportunities to girls and women in places where this women is reaching.
The lord requires one thing of you ONLY and that is to work out your OWN salvation with fear and trembling . He dose not require us to save the world . Jesus already gave his life for that cause. Their are so many trying to STEAL your star DONT allow it. We each have our own individual power DO NOT give it away to any man nor woman .
Thanks for your balanced response! I must still take issue that any group should be stopped from learning because of the colour of there skin it should be teach as many poor kids to code as possible! Being poor and not knowing how to code is not in the soul domain of black people! I don't know any white black or Asian kids who are being taught it! But who knows with the Asians they are dam good at numbers! If you do think the way to advance is to do to others what you have had done to your race that is sad and you will have a group of black only kids knowing the reason they were taught and a different race were not is because of the colour of there skin I think that does not help anybody!"" What would they call it now Somthing like positive discrimination! Nothing is positive about that if you me or anyone excludes a child on the colour of there skin you are a Racist
Jet Black Girl's Code is more like it in her case and I saw a few biracial in which black woman love to include them until they get all the better movie roles! hahaha!
So, I'm going to preface what I'm about to say by letting you know that I'm not racist. In fact, my girlfriend is black and from Kenya. Would this organization exclude a white or Hispanic child who wanted to participate? Or what about young boys? Why is there a racial component to this, and why is it socially acceptable to have a group called "Black Girls Code" but not "White girls code". People of all races, genders, and religions struggle with poverty and educational inopportunity.
That's pretty funny. You're likening my loving relationship to a black woman from Kenya to being an "attraction", reserving the possibility of racism still existing?
Have you ever watch a TED Talk by an African American that was not about race? I'm sure one might be out there?? Another question... Why can't black and white people wear the same clothes? Sorry that I left out almost all ethnic groups. I can understand one country versus another country. 1960 s. African Americans should be very well-established. However, people should feel free to wear whatever they want. It's common sense that people will be judged by what they wear though. If put on a dress and heels I would have stares Everywhere I go. We need to remember that most of our life will revolve around opinions, decisions, and judgments.

You can be racist and date a black person believe it or not. Being attracted to black people does not absolve you of racism.
That's pretty funny. You're likening my loving relationship to a black woman from Kenya to being an "attraction", reserving the possibility of racism still existing?
Too bad you black girlfriend hasn't educated you on why there is the need a thing like 'Black girls code'
"Your", Not "You". Don't tell someone to become more educated if you don't have a proper grasp on basic grammar.

shades of color not ethnicity.
it's time for you to expose yourself more and learn more. It's easy to have small minded thoughts but I challenge you to be more opened.
