You can see the opposition by classmates as he gets those 8-10 strokes of the strap on the palm of his hands. As a teen, I would've been embarrassed to be whipped in front of classmates, especially girls. I admired how those girls showed empathy and distracted, so he could steal that strap. I only got it once at school and it was a paddle, not a strap, and on my butt along with 2 other guys getting paddled too.
I went to catholic school for four years. The catholic schools I went to were violent and cruel. We got detention for being a few seconds late to our seats because we were standing in line to get a drink of water on a very hot day. Then they would hit us with a wooden paddle if we goat caught talking during detention. I'm glad I got kicked out and went to a more civilized public school.
I would get hit by a wooden paddle with holes to prevent slow throw for atleast 15 times if I failed a test or I I was late or If I was misbehaving in class 😮
Or play a musical instrument like a piano or a recorder - or go to a cookery, pottery or art & craft class - then the teacher would call you clumsy every time you drop a pen or a paintbrush or tool or hit bum notes on the piano or whatever - you'd think that they would leave it till the end of the school day - not after morning assembly - also, the teacher asks why you're late! Here in the UK, although so-called "public schools" (really private schools where posh kids or kids whose parents are filthy rich go to) were a law unto themselves (check out the film "If ..." for an example of such a school) only the head or deputy head could implement corporal punishment - not to be confused with capital punishment - getting your head chopped off or being hanged for misspelling a word or getting a sum wrong - regular teachers could give lines or detention, but not any form of physical punishment - didn't deter some from trying - P E teachers were the worst offenders! The deputy head could only issue the slipper - by which I mean plimsoll - on the bum - the head could use the plimsoll on the bum or a cane on either the bum or the hand - any other weapon was illegal - also, whether it was the slipper or the cane, on the bum or on the hand, the maximum per day that could be issued was six strokes of either - all of which counted - if they missed, tough - if they wanted to give you twelve or thirty whacks, it had to be done over several days - six today, six tomorrow and so on!
He was applying it to the left hand. I suspect the strap was most likely used on the non-dominant hand (in right-handed people, that would be the left hand), as was done with the cane in my native Britain.
We didn’t get the strap in Sydney public schools we got caned , I still remember getting caned every day for 2 weeks , in year 4 (10 year old )because the teacher said he didn’t like English Boys , it wasn’t so much the pain it was the embarrassment getting it in front of all the class , but that was the late 60s and seventies some teachers were just spiteful and sadist but I’m sure it would of been a lot worse back in the day
The principal's in Canada gave out the strap for the dumbest reasons, I remember in 1969 to give it they had to have parents permission then in different school boards in Ontario from the mid seventies to the mid eighties it was abolished. The catholic school boards were the last ones to abolish it.i got it myself once in grade one and three times in grade four.
I got the strap by a nun when I was only 5 years old and had just started school. It was for such a trivial reason and I held a grudge against that nun all throughout my school years.
I remember, when I was attending school in Canada, I was sent to the principal's office, and got strapped for scribbling in a school textbook when I was 9 years old. That was back in 1966, I got two whacks on each hand. It stung, but I bore it well, and after a few hours, the pain had basically faded away. That was the one and only time I got it, there were more than a few in my class that had to get whacked several time.
We had the strap in Ontario, but they called the parents to ask permission. Girls never got the strap. Only boys. Boys always said that it did not hurt. I thought at first they were brave, but then I figured that they were just lying.
Proud Guy ; your wrong about the girls not receiving the same punishment! In Ontario Private schools, the teacher would put you over his/her knee and spank you in front of the class. Others would wrack your knuckles with a ruler. There were straps, canes and rulers to enforce discipline. It didn’t matter what gender you were even in the Ontario private school sector. They phoned your parents after you got the strap in school and when you arrived home your parents would beat you again for getting the strap❣️🇨🇦
I got the strap on the hands in public elementary school and early high school in the 1960s and it hurt like crazy. They gave it to girls too although not very often. I don't recall experiencing or hearing about an instantaneous strapping. They usually did it in a school office after going through all the required bureaucratic procedures including paperwork and getting parental permission. Another difference from the video is that the strap they used was a more rigid implement.
My friend, Adam and I, in grade 7, sewed carpet to our underpants, then went to school ( boys Catholic) , and taunted our teacher until he called us out to the whopp room. Good times. , 1978.
I can also confirm that girls got the strap in Catholic schools in Ontario as well as all other forms of corporal punishment. At the schools I attended the strap was something usually reserved for the principal's office, but all other forms of discipline were up to the individual teacher you had. Some would simply make you write lines, while others would call you up to the front of the class, put you over their knee and spank you. It was so humiliating. Others would have you bend over and give you whacks of a paddle or yard stick. Contrary to what you see in movies, in my experience it was the usually female teachers that were the most strict.
They did they were using a strap in this purpose because they didn’t want to actually hurt the kids and you can’t find a stick anywhere because of the law which I think is a good thing that they can’t find it
I got the paddle in 1974 by a shop teacher; Southern Oklahoma School. Punishment for being late. 3 very hard hits on the butt. Stung for maybe an hour. I was never late to class to the day I graduated high school in 1980. I'll take that old school way over how it is today. Oh and by the way........all the boys who ever got the paddle from Mr. Anderson respected him and he was often voted or nominated favorite teacher. Go figure.
The school I went to had a strict rule of being punctual and if we were just a second late we would be sent to the principal’s office and he would hit us with a wooden paddle, once this happened to me and he hit me with the paddle 20 times more than he would usually because I had brung a tuna sandwich and fish was banned so I got hit 30 times in my butt and then 10 on my hand with a belt
michael yates ...and...the strap was used in Canada. It was just like in this RUclips clip. I don't know what jojo means when he/she says school wasn't like that in 1957?
Say what you want. Corporal punishment is outdated and a primitive and lazy way to "teach". All you do is to "teach" the child that when it misbehaves you will use violence to cause pain. There are so many other ways: positive reinforcement or non violent sanctions but these would actually require effort and brainpower instead of just being an ape and beating your kid. Violence as a punishment is not allowed against adults. Even if you attack other people, police isn't allowed to beat you as a punishment. They are of course allowed to use physical force to bring you down and restrain you, but once you're restrained they can't just come up and be like "Well Mr. XYZ, you will get a proper beating for attack other people and destroying property." You can't even do this to convicted criminals. Even a murderer can't just be taken out of his cell to get a beating by the police or so. So if it is not allowed against clearly depraved and evil humans who have committed horrible crimes, why is it allowed against children who are - by their very nature - still in the process of learning everything and who are - in fact - not yet fully mentally developed? Try so say what you want but there is NO excuse and no justification for it.
I got the strap in grade 3 in 1973 . Vancouver,BC The strap & the mis treatment of children was soon abolished after the release of Pink Floyd's 1979 single ' Another brick in the wall Part 2 ' with the line ' Hey Teacher leave those kids alone " we dont need no education " 1979 was also the year the rock concerts no longer had festival seating due to a tragedy at a Who concert in Ohio in 1979 on Dec. 3rd where 11 kids were trampled to death by fans rushing the stage for the best seat after Door ushers open only 3 doors for 15,000 teens most of them high on something or drunk but the strap was never really an issue until the abuse of teachers was getting out of hand then it suddenly stopped but it was just like this video except they made us go to the principals office to get the dreaded strap
It is illegal to paddle high school students. Only elementary, grade school, and junior high students deserve corporal punishment, if they have bad grade(s) such as "Ds", tardiness, bullying, and running in the hallways.
Maybe today illegal in most schools to paddle any students. It was authorized when I was in school and our parents aware and overall approved. Made it to 9th in HS before I got my first school paddling...it was over neglected assignments and got it on my butt (over trousers) and not bare palm of my hands.
my high school still used the paddle but only by the principal and while I was never paddled myself i did see it on several occasions. Now I don't really think it teaches anything except that you don't want it to happen again and sometimes maybe the kid doesn't know what he is being punished for. There are plenty of other ways to teach kid a lesson have him stay after school and do chores with the janitors. Make him help the coach out stacking balls or cleaning equipment etc. In most cases the parents have to agree to the paddle which my father was fine with but as is said i never did anything that bad at a school though I might have gotten a few others paddled but one of them throw a book in my face almost breaking my nose then had the gall to beg me not to tell anybody because he would be expelled. I was not a tattle tale and i never said a word actually teacher who had witnessed the aftermath told them. So for any bullies out there don't think you will get away with it just because no one saw the event. Try being nice to the kid you bully you might find out they are really cool everyone acts different outside school.
School bullies were a law unto themselves - they would bully someone, then, if caught doing it by a staff member and got some sort of punishment - lines, detention, forced to sweep out a room, deprived of certain food (my first boarding school felt that that was an appropriate punishment) or whatever, the bully would accuse the victim of "getting them into trouble" - they didn't think that they had done anything wrong!
I loved how the two girls provided over for hi while he stole the strap!

if your gonna be so late for school then why bother almost 11am
good old days

I hear you.
Omg
😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
I would straight up get hit with a wooden paddle 10 times for being late😢
I would get hit by a wooden paddle with holes to prevent slow throw for atleast 15 times if I failed a test or I I was late or If I was misbehaving in class 😮
My great aunt said she had a teacher in the 40s who would strap kids for making more than one mistake on their spelling tests.
😲
That is a ridiculous punishment
And after that, they expect you to write? ?

I got it for being lousy at math. It was supposed to be motivational.

Yeah Canada is abusive it's our "culture".
I got the strap by a nun when I was only 5 years old and had just started school. It was for such a trivial reason and I held a grudge against that nun all throughout my school years.
In Germany it officially abolished until the mid 2000s. It was often a belt.
Got the strap in Ontario in grade two ! Evil , brutal way to treat a child
Very true.
In Germany a belt was used up until the mid 2000s in some places.
I remember, when I was attending school in Canada, I was sent to the principal's office, and got strapped for scribbling in a school textbook when I was 9 years old. At my house I got that black belt with the little spikes...memories
The teacher looks like my version of Mr Green from Cluedo and sounds like my version of me green from cluedo

My mom and dad got the belt and I didn't
British schooling system in the commonwealth, similar laws too.
Lucky you lol
If i was late i would have stayed at home ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
i thought they used sticks

I still don't think the strap was necessary. Could have punished you by making you stay in class at recess.
I actually do agree with you because paddling and striping was not necessary

Good at last sad at beginning nice video...
School was not like that in 57'. But good story anyhow.
jojorobino5312
How do you mean?
michael yates
...and...the strap was used in Canada. It was just like in this RUclips clip. I don't know what jojo means when he/she says school wasn't like that in 1957?
In my school of u don't bring ur games clothes for games u will get lash
Try getting this with a ruler when your in 2nd grade Catholic school.
We had hacks. With a hack board. Handled board with holes drilled. Sting 😮
Bad teacher
The flag of Canada was different!!
It had a Union Jack, right?
I remember that.Despicable device. It was actually sold by Moir's School supplies in the Maritimes. Good riddance.

Thats that then lol
I live in Canada I didn’t know it was legal to hit kids here
The RUclips video is from a very long time ago youngin'.
It's illegal for teachers to hit their students, but parents can still use their hands to spank their kids at home.
it was banned in 2004
That was in 1957
I got the strap in grade 3 in 1973 . Vancouver,BC
