I'm just tired of people excusing bad behavior in the name of veganism. Instead of coming out immediately and apologizing or clearing up the issue, everyone stayed silent. That's what I found super suspicious/disappointing. What we allow will continue, and I'm glad I spoke up because I learned that FL+DR are completely closed minded +quick to label you a hater or fake vegan JUST because you disagree with something. They don't even acknowledge the positive +continue to pride themselves in statements like "we are the most effective! We are saving the animals and the planet!" With no evidence of impact or amount of people who go vegan vs people who are turned away. I know FL gets millions of views, but millions don't go vegan. I'm just over the prideful, arrogant attitudes & I believe that if someone truly wants to help people + animals, they would not exclude or alienate people when they disagree with them. Just my opinion ...
This is so true! Glad to see you realized what those two are really like. It's the people that have the courage to stand up against the big guys that honestly turn people into vegans because this is the movement people want to part of. This is the honest good hearted thing I wanted to part of when I went vegan. This bullying and hateful and unrealistic goal mixed with them constantly body shaming and click baiting is so awful. I was so repulsed when I saw them posting pictures of actual people and critiquing them on IG that unfollowed them and everyone who stands for that gross behavior.

One thing I fucking HATE is people that talk about concerns with health, about being healthy, and about how being healthy is the most important, but then go on talking about people's looks over and over again. And Veganism is the only way we are saving our habitat, so I don't intend to quit anytime soon. Durianrider (and then vegan gains) were the only ones willing to troll the areas on the internet most would never find veganism. Thanks to that, his hard-ass, real-as-fuck approach, and linking to actual doctors and science was what I needed to realistically consider it. The whole situation is just consuming and sad. I came into Veganism a year ago and two of the first people I came across was Durianrider and Freelee. Their method didn't work for me but you know what? Through them, I found your channel, Dr. mcGregor, Hannah, Dr. McDougal and about 20 others I subscribe to. I converted my very sick husband who was a hard core meat eater into a "success case" for our physician that is now exploring plant based diets for other patients... I was able to determine for myself who I thought would bring value to my education about diet and my own values. I just hate my feed constantly tied up with this situation. If I was coming into Veganism now, I doubt I would have even explored further. I appreciate your views and opinions, you're interesting. Other on here that are extremely into this "scandal" and flooding my feed with hourly nonsense? They are gone...I hope newbies don't get off put and run away.
i totally agree, i wish i didnt have to hear about it every time freelee or harley did something dumb. im just trying to keep myself motivated and learn things along the way. the drama every two weeks or so they start to stay relevant is exhausting and honestly at this point i think people should let their channels die down and stop bringing so much attention to them...

Also freelee was one of the first vegan youtubers I stumbled upon and I am so glad that I found you, who convinced me to go vegan. I feel like freelee and DR have such bad vibes, I would not have wanted to go vegan if those two were the only ones i got to know.

I'm not a big fan of DR, but my channel is about Star Wars. I think it would be a bit out of place. Also--I think the majority of my viewers are actually kids watching on their parents' accounts.

About Freelee's comment, YOU are one of the main reasons I went vegan (probably the biggest reason but I watched a few other people go vegan then pulled the trigger). I have learned a lot about my diet from watching your channel. I don't follow RawTil4 and never will unnecessarily restrict my diet to fruit and potatoes when there are other very yummy vegan foods out there that make me feel good and comfort me at the same time. THANK YOU! :) I've watched plenty of Freelee videos and if anything, she's what kept me from becoming a vegan because it felt too hard, too restrictive, too judgmental and just not a thing I wanted to be a part of long term. THANK YOU!!! for being a vegan that puts out both sides of the equation, doesn't name call those that don't agree and just states your findings from actual research done by doctors. As far as vegans who mostly talk in their videos, yes. As far as vegans who mostly just cook & bake in their videos (hot for food, The Vegan Zombie, The Sweetest Vegan), no. I follow the latter (more so for food allergy issues and less so for veganism), and then this channel is the only channel in the former that I follow.
Swayze, You've always been honest with your journey, and I appreciate that immensely. Thank you for exposing these fools in a mature manner. I've been vegan for over a decade. There used to be very little information and no strong voices or 'leaders' online. I thought FL and DR were cool at first. I've been watching these vain narcissists for years. There used to be a great site, about 4 years ago, called '30 bananas a day sucks" with countless critiques, complaints and some really sad stories about people who's health had been affected by the raw diet- which is what FL and DR were initially promoting. DR sued the site owner, and it was taken down. This was the first case of MANY of people speaking up against them and being shut up. They were publicly cast our from the Raw Food Festival due to their behavior and public bashing of other public vegan figures. They also first adored then turned on Doug Graham, after clearly adapting several of the 80-10-10 concepts. When FL and DR broke up, it was because DR was on steroids and FL was against it because he was acting like a nutcase (more than usual). This was all in videos, DR was promoting being on the juice. FL left him and moved in with her mum. Their ratings plummeted, so they got back together and came up with their new scheme, called 'Raw Till 4", since the raw lifestyle was impossible (and completely unhealthy and unbalanced to follow for a long time). There has been so much ill behavior, cruelty, ego-maniacal manipulation and malicious actions taken by the two of them against anyone opposing them over the years, both of them have changed their stories countless times, which is why they lost complete credibility to me. Not to mention- with all their fame, influence and power- why did they never open an animal sanctuary? Or start a REAL social advocacy group against animal cruelty like PETA? Because they're in this for the money, period. DR has boasted so many times about how much he makes. He 'helps' people to promote his own image, like a politician kissing babies in public. He's dangerous, a paranoid schizophrenic super troll, with a cult of unstable boys cycling away their insecurities, for a false sense of purpose and self esteem. I hope that this attack and attempt to destroy Eisel Mazard is the last straw, and these two uneducated, cruel opportunists will finally be shut up and we can evolve into a peaceful community, fed by love and compassion, realizing that power and fame corrupt even the best of us. We have all made Facebook posts that we regret and decided to delete later. The thing is, what they should have done, considering they have so many followers and things get screenshot around so much, was, right after deleting, put up another post saying: "I recently made this post, but I stand corrected, I deleted it because it went too far and I apologize to Eisel for any inconvenience." Or something along those tracks. Then, none of this would have blown up the way it did, and people would have understood. Of course there would always have been some people running with it anyway, but, most of us would have been able to relate to doing something in the heat of the moment which one regrets doing later. Honesty (and sincerity) is always the best policy. I think I can understand the context in which this all went down and it is inexcusable, but to some degree understandable. But, it was not handled appropriately.

I dropped out of their drama over a year ago since the 801010 diet gave me a xanthelsma. Their career is purely dependent on views on You Tube... when the drama stops, their income stops. The best way to silence them is to stop watching them! I love your videos as they are well researched, helpful and come from a place of betterment. Great Work! :-)
the world will never be 100 % vegan and I think expecting that is doing a disservice to animals. the focus needs to be on humane treatment of animals and more will naturally go vegan that way. stop hating those you disagree with. stop being extreme. be balanced and rational and use your critical thinking skills. just ranting.
Even just dramatically reducing ones consumption of animal product is a huge step in the right direction (and perhaps more practical for the average person), yet so many vegans won't even acknowledge that and are more concerned with policing other vegans.

Why does it sound like you eat 'humanely slaughtered' meat? I think the world will go all vegan one day, but it will take time and we'll have to lobby a lot to get the cruelty recognized and stopped. Thank you for this video. I am a long time vegan ( about 25 years) who started watching vegan you tubers about 1 to 2 years ago. At first I liked what I saw, but the more I watched the more I saw behavior that I feel really hurts the animals. Example after example of ineffective activism - done with very good intentions - but none the less, counterproductive. For example, an all or nothing stance. You tubers basically saying go vegan or don't bother doing anything, don't reduce consumption! Also behaviors that will make non vegans hate vegans. I am grateful to you and the Vegan Bros and a couple of others for promoting outreach that will help animals rather than hurt them. Luckily there is a vegan world outside of you tube filled with amazing activists. They give me hope for the future.

It really shows how much of a reflective person you are and how much aware you are about the impact of RUclipsrs on young people. The phenomenon of "othering" is something that can control masses and often creates creepy dynamics. Trying not to build an "army" or making people rally to your side blindly is a great thing you are doing. You are my favourite vegan youtuber for this particular reason. You discuss and educate without making it all about you as a person. Using facts to discuss things is way more educational than creating an unreflective fan culture. Fan-culture can be dangerous if the person who "leads" a certain group misuses that kind of power. This is what Durianrider does when he actually asks people to go ahead and beat the other guy (I really cannot spell it properly) up based on stupid allegations with no proof. And even if any of it was true, asking people to go ahead and take the law into their own heads in a violent manner still isn't okay (I know his claims are not true but I am just trying to say either way he did something that is inexcusable). We have justice systems to take care of these things. Power abuse and taking advantage of fan cultures is highly dangerous. Creating a sense where it is "us against the rest of the world" does cause people to act without thinking. Especially young people. i agree, i have unsubbed from so many channels now. dr and fl a few months ago but joe best in the last few weeks hhv,mommytang, hch, and many more. im down to so few vegan you tubers, and i think it is better because veganism isnt the only thing in my life and why was i wasting so much time on so much stupid vegan content, most of which isnt even worth watching. im still subscribed to mary's test kitchen and unnatural vegan, and a few others but so many are gone, and i am glad for it!

I very much appreciate what you said about Fandom and the risk of not using critical thinking because we idolize someone's opinion so much. I don't always agree with everything you say but your approach always leaves me thinking and I've gone and looked further into topics (vaccines for example) and often changed or altered my own opinion because of it. If all Vegans were like freelee, l wouldn't be vegan. I didn't choose to become one, to hate meat eaters. l did it for the animals and the environment. I never encourage people to go vegan, but l am encouraging them to eat less and think about where their food is coming from.

I always wondered.... when vegans say that other vegans aren't vegan... but if they still aren't eating animal products... what are they then...? Plant based? LOL. Because I'm probably in whatever category that is... because I like to go against the stream by not telling my family members to off themselves for eating animals... rather I'm evil enough to still support them and treat them like people with flaws and feelings and not place my personal activism above them.

Two things. 1. I just discovered your videos and I really appreciate all the research you include in them. 2. The commercial before this video was for a tree stand harness, which I found humorous in an ironic way.
I don't think Eizel apologized and then said but. He honestly felt sorry for hurting her feelings and apologized for that (not for what he did like he would retract them but he is sorry that she is hurt). He maybe painted her as a person who cries when someone does things that she does to others constantly but I don't see them doing the same thing. Eizel was honest about apologizing, DR just tried to make this crap go away as soon as possible. Maybe I am biased at this point, I don't know any more. Need to go off youtube for a day or two.
I started going down the vegan path with Robyn Openshaw (Green Smoothie Girl), who is not vegan. Then I found Freelee, and right after her Harvey Johnstone. Back then Freelee was doing almost exclusively 'what I ate and did in a day' vids. And Harley was doing cycling vids and vids on buying the right bike and gear. They inspired me to go to the Woodstock Fruit Festival in 2013. I met a couple of great people, but I also found it highly political, and cliquey. Right after that there was a real drama when Freelee and Harley were banned from the festival because they were promoting the consumption of cooked foods. I followed that and sided with them. But right after that it seemed like Freelee was doing more negative critique and click baity vids. And Harley was ramping up with his 'harden the F*ck up' stance. I'm a sensitive person and I was pondering how that was possible and what impact it would have in my life. And then I decided to stop following them. They were going down a rabbit hole that I wasn't interested in. I'm glad I found your channel, I don't agree with everything you say but at least you are measured and logical in your approach to critical thought and criticism. You also change your mind about things and own up to it. I also follow Eisel Mazard, but I find his vids harder to watch, he seems to have a meandering way of presenting his point of view.

I watched one regarding your take on anti-depressants, and his claims about you giving out "dangerous" claims, when all you were doing was telling your own story, and debunking the myth that depression is purely an effect of lifelstyle... wow. It was strange. He was pretty hostile. He hasn't allowed comments, which is always a red flag. I'm sure you are aware of all this anyway, and it's good that you aren't rising to his bait. Dissapointing, but that's youtube! You rock.
I'll give my two cents as a non-vegan; seeing vegans treat other humans (vegans and non-vegans) the way they do completely discredits the message of empathy towards other beings and all beings having equal rights. The way F+DR treat both non-vegans and non-HCLFers is hypocritical. Think of the animals? No, you should think of other humans first. Animals aren't the ones you're trying to convince. You can't preach universal morality and then treat other humans like shit. It makes vegans look like bullies and in some cases straight up unstable, and completely discredits veganism as a movement. I want to transition into a more plant-based diet but currently cannot due to health conditions. When approaching vegans for help to do so I've been attacked and judged about things they do not even know. They've called me lazy and selfish when in actual fact there are days I cannot pee unaided. Instead of offering help they've simply tried to bully me into it, which most definitely ineffective.

While I find Freleee and Durian and That Vegan Couple unwatchable, sadly as you pointed out, many kids do look up to them. Kids love drama and soap opera hijinks so Freleee and durian probably won't lose many subscribers, but maybe they'll try reaching a more adult demographic now that so many adults have criticized their high school nincompoopery.

Oh yeah that's for sure. A lot of people do fall into the trap of idolizing people and we all do it some extent, but I try my best not to, of course there's still people that I should be more critical of them, but I certainly know that no matter how much I like someone I'm ok with disagreeing with them and I can call them out, but I'm definitely a bit less critical of people I like and I should probably work more on that.
I don't like to see Internet hive mind castigating people completely, but at the same time I can't quite believe how poorly both Freelee and DR take criticism. It's such an important skill as an adult in the workplace, relationships, friendships etc. It really is vital to being an adult, and so given their inability to do so it makes me wonder what they must be like in real life.
You are not only one of the most reasonable vegans, but one of the most reasonable RUclipsrs. I don't know who would think you're not vegan judging from your videos. Your message is 100% vegan. Sometimes the vegan community goes crazy (like the Furious Pete thing and FullyRawKristina's "angry vegans" video) so it needs to be called out, but being critical does not exclude being vegan. If anything, rational thinking supports veganism completely because it helps the planet, animals and people's health.
I love your videos but find you share SO much information that I find it hard to take in. This isn't a critique, but rather personal reflection. I usually have to watch 3-5 times to get it all. You always bring about deeper thinking Swayze.
listening to this as a non vegan, I find it funny how a vegan talking about the faults of other vegans and vegan culture makes me want to consider becoming a vegan. (now take a shot for every time I said vegan)
Your videos are my favorite. It's like you actually take the time to THINK about what you're going to say and plan your points instead of just making emotionally charged, insulting videos (which is more than can be said for a lot of RUclipsrs) haha. I think that's very important, especially when talking about sensitive topics.

It's hard to watch the vegans who are so in love with FBG and DR just because they "spread the vegan message". It's infuriating. I had to stop watching Freelee's videos full stop. I like some of her earlier vids which are far more positive and point out the positives of a vegan lifestyle without judgement. It seems now that neither one of them can create a video that doesn't take SOME kind of stab at other people regardless of their reasons. They actually make me pretty ashamed to be Australian because when I see that people equate Aussies with those two... Well. Most of us are nothing like them! They both turned me away from veganism. I was interested in it for health benefits not so much the moral stance, but apparently that doesn't make you vegan 'enough'. Their attitudes are poisonous. Sane and reasonable discussion from people like yourself keeps me interested. I don't deal well with people being negative towards me, I just stay the hell away from it. I don't need that in my life. So when people are positive and reasonable it makes it a lot easier to be open to the message. Drama? Screw that. I'm too old and bitter to deal with their highschool crap *chuckle*.
You're one the very few vegan youtubers that I admire and respect. In fact I dislike most vegans. We vegans can be so dogmatic and militant about our beliefs, and I feel having that kind of hatred puts many non vegans off.. Been waiting for this video. Eisel is definitely not infallible. I'm a little worried, its going in that direction because some of his strongest supporters, people he has inspired beyond youtube are up and comers. I wonder if on some level that's why Eisel enabled comments, because he wants to open his image to being torn down by the public riffraff a bit, and generally ground his channel more. I agree, I think there are a lot of people that feel duped/wronged by Durianrider in various ways. This "drama" has given them a forum to talk about that, to communicate feelings of embarrassment and injustice, to seek a sort of revenge-redemption for themselves and in a sense re-craft how they want veganism to be represented going forward.
not really. She was an adult at the time. Julia Boer is 16 years old. Sounds like HC was disappointed with the experience, that's very different. DR was accusing Eisel of being a pedophile (which was not at all true) but HC drawing parallels between her situation with DR vs Eisel and Julia is flawed (even though the Julia/Eisel situation was fiction) as she's an adult! DR may not have behaved the way that she liked, but I don't think anyone can say it's the same.
I've recently had to unsubscribe from someone because they took criticism so poorly. One example of that person was them saying people who don't create RUclips videos in their niche aren't allowed to criticize.. which was definitely the breaking point. Same person is also willing to overlook the wrongs in the vegan community (especially in regards to pseudo-science) because veganism would still be in a positive light. This was all from what I perceived to be a rather rational vegan, too. It's a shame pseudo-science and those sorts of mentalities are so pervasive in the vegan community (pretty much any community, to be sure, but it seems more prominent amongst RUclips vegans.)

How someone can watch Durianrider and not get angry/annoyed after a minute I'll never understand. Honestly he's just a man who swears a lot a whose only arguments are yt views and the fact that his girlfriend is hot. I won't even mention his 'curing' crohn, schizofrenia and god knows what else by sugar binging. I actually didn't watch any videos regarding the matter up until know - just thought it's a waste of time. You convinced me to look it up, so I saw probably the most important ones(couldn't go though the freelee one). In conclusion: Durianrider is even worse than I thought and him turning teenangers against other people is downright scary. The allegations he made are indeed very serious and even though it's very clear he made it all up had I been in Eisel's shoes I'd definitely fight to take all of the videos and posts about it down. In some time everyone will forget about all the drama but the mentions here and there will stay. Also, I shouldn't be suprised but the fact that all of this is happening because according to DR Freelee's feeling were hurt(same Freelee who spends most of her social media time bashing other people for the way they look, live and view the world and responds to any comments saying she might be to harsh that everyone should grow a thicker skin) is laughable. Also, thank you Swayze. Because of the reasearch I just did on the subject I found out about DR sore pelvis, name of the first girl he kissed and when he lost his virginity. I don't know how I've lived without this information.
Just because Freelee eats like 5lbs of fruits a day, does not mean she doesn't have and eating disorder. SHE CLEARLY DOES!!! Her fear of getting fat is strong, considering the fact she's admitted to riding her bike at least 200-300 km per week and eating less than 10 grams a fat. She says she's not a fataphobe, but she clearly is! When I attempted a similar lifestyle to hers with very limited fat, I went out and binged on donuts, greasy food etc. Freelee is a plant-based Rt4 vegan with clear and obvious body issues with implants (not that there's anything wrong with that) and an even more clear, mild eating disorder.

I'm just tired of people excusing bad behavior in the name of veganism. Instead of coming out immediately and apologizing or clearing up the issue, everyone stayed silent. That's what I found super suspicious/disappointing. What we allow will continue, and I'm glad I spoke up because I learned that FL+DR are completely closed minded +quick to label you a hater or fake vegan JUST because you disagree with something. They don't even acknowledge the positive +continue to pride themselves in statements like "we are the most effective! We are saving the animals and the planet!" With no evidence of impact or amount of people who go vegan vs people who are turned away. I know FL gets millions of views, but millions don't go vegan. I'm just over the prideful, arrogant attitudes & I believe that if someone truly wants to help people + animals, they would not exclude or alienate people when they disagree with them. Um are you serious? Freelee makes videos about veganism every. single. day. Literally 99.9% of her videos if not 100% have the vegan message incorporated into them. Know what you're talking about before you speak! And for DR, he rolls with the drama. Why? Because it reaches larger audiences, and it makes people find the vegan community on youtube. Even if they find it through negative drama related videos, they still find it, and it can plant a seed in their head. He may take an overly abrasive approach at times, but a lot of what he says is taken WAY the fuck out of context. It's his personality. He's dramatic. Meet him in person and you'll realize that he is one of the most real, straight to the point, no bullshit people ever. And if you're pro vegan who doesn't talk shit about himself and Freelee(which is fair enough!), he is seriously one of the kindest people you will ever meet.

I am not currently following him as I have no need to anymore (i've found better informational sources), but I thank him for bringing me and so many others to veganism. People who would NEVER have looked at a wiaiad video or any other light non judgmental fun vegan content that would've made me perhaps try new vegan food, but miss the connection.

The whole situation is just consuming and sad. I came into Veganism a year ago and two of the first people I came across was Durianrider and Freelee. Their method didn't work for me but you know what? Through them, I found your channel, Dr. mcGregor, Hannah, Dr. McDougal and about 20 others I subscribe to. I converted my very sick husband who was a hard core meat eater into a "success case" for our physician that is now exploring plant based diets for other patients...
I was able to determine for myself who I thought would bring value to my education about diet and my own values. I just hate my feed constantly tied up with this situation. If I was coming into Veganism now, I doubt I would have even explored further.
I appreciate your views and opinions, you're interesting. Other on here that are extremely into this "scandal" and flooding my feed with hourly nonsense? They are gone...I hope newbies don't get off put and run away.
i totally agree, i wish i didnt have to hear about it every time freelee or harley did something dumb. im just trying to keep myself motivated and learn things along the way. the drama every two weeks or so they start to stay relevant is exhausting and honestly at this point i think people should let their channels die down and stop bringing so much attention to them...

About Freelee's comment, YOU are one of the main reasons I went vegan (probably the biggest reason but I watched a few other people go vegan then pulled the trigger). I have learned a lot about my diet from watching your channel. I don't follow RawTil4 and never will unnecessarily restrict my diet to fruit and potatoes when there are other very yummy vegan foods out there that make me feel good and comfort me at the same time. THANK YOU! :) I've watched plenty of Freelee videos and if anything, she's what kept me from becoming a vegan because it felt too hard, too restrictive, too judgmental and just not a thing I wanted to be a part of long term. THANK YOU!!! for being a vegan that puts out both sides of the equation, doesn't name call those that don't agree and just states your findings from actual research done by doctors. You are an amazing asset to the vegan community and I'm so happy I found your channel.

I like Freelee and Unnatural Vegan, I like Freelee and Tana, I like Freelee and Blogilates (not that much, but I think she's very nice). Yet I will NEVER EVER understand why is she with Harley, he's so ignorant, UGH!!! I just think he is just a hypocrite. Freelee of course lies, but not all the time about everything. I don't know she is aware of it. I know I've learned any things about the industry because of her, I'm aware that she may exagerate to some degree, but I think those videos she always puts are pretty real, and keep me motivated to stay vegan. As far as vegans who mostly talk in their videos, yes. As far as vegans who mostly just cook & bake in their videos (hot for food, The Vegan Zombie, The Sweetest Vegan), no. I follow the latter (more so for food allergy issues and less so for veganism), and then this channel is the only channel in the former that I follow.

Swayze, You've always been honest with your journey, and I appreciate that immensely. Thank you for exposing these fools in a mature manner. I've been vegan for over a decade. There used to be very little information and no strong voices or 'leaders' online. I thought FL and DR were cool at first. I've been watching these vain narcissists for years. There used to be a great site, about 4 years ago, called '30 bananas a day sucks" with countless critiques, complaints and some really sad stories about people who's health had been affected by the raw diet- which is what FL and DR were initially promoting. DR sued the site owner, and it was taken down. This was the first case of MANY of people speaking up against them and being shut up.
They were publicly cast our from the Raw Food Festival due to their behavior and public bashing of other public vegan figures. They also first adored then turned on Doug Graham, after clearly adapting several of the 80-10-10 concepts.
When FL and DR broke up, it was because DR was on steroids and FL was against it because he was acting like a nutcase (more than usual). This was all in videos, DR was promoting being on the juice. FL left him and moved in with her mum. Their ratings plummeted, so they got back together and came up with their new scheme, called 'Raw Till 4", since the raw lifestyle was impossible (and completely unhealthy and unbalanced to follow for a long time).
There has been so much ill behavior, cruelty, ego-maniacal manipulation and malicious actions taken by the two of them against anyone opposing them over the years, both of them have changed their stories countless times, which is why they lost complete credibility to me. Not to mention- with all their fame, influence and power- why did they never open an animal sanctuary? Or start a REAL social advocacy group against animal cruelty like PETA? Because they're in this for the money, period. DR has boasted so many times about how much he makes. He 'helps' people to promote his own image, like a politician kissing babies in public. He's dangerous, a paranoid schizophrenic super troll, with a cult of unstable boys cycling away their insecurities, for a false sense of purpose and self esteem.
I hope that this attack and attempt to destroy Eisel Mazard is the last straw, and these two uneducated, cruel opportunists will finally be shut up and we can evolve into a peaceful community, fed by love and compassion, realizing that power and fame corrupt even the best of us. Cheers xoxo
We have all made Facebook posts that we regret and decided to delete later. The thing is, what they should have done, considering they have so many followers and things get screenshot around so much, was, right after deleting, put up another post saying: "I recently made this post, but I stand corrected, I deleted it because it went too far and I apologize to Eisel for any inconvenience." Or something along those tracks. Then, none of this would have blown up the way it did, and people would have understood. Of course there would always have been some people running with it anyway, but, most of us would have been able to relate to doing something in the heat of the moment which one regrets doing later. Honesty (and sincerity) is always the best policy. I think I can understand the context in which this all went down and it is inexcusable, but to some degree understandable. But, it was not handled appropriately.

I dropped out of their drama over a year ago since the 801010 diet gave me a xanthelsma. Their career is purely dependent on views on You Tube... when the drama stops, their income stops. the world will never be 100 % vegan and I think expecting that is doing a disservice to animals. the focus needs to be on humane treatment of animals and more will naturally go vegan that way. stop hating those you disagree with. stop being extreme. be balanced and rational and use your critical thinking skills. just ranting.
Even just dramatically reducing ones consumption of animal product is a huge step in the right direction (and perhaps more practical for the average person), yet so many vegans won't even acknowledge that and are more concerned with policing other vegans.

Thank you for this video. I am a long time vegan ( about 25 years) who started watching vegan you tubers about 1 to 2 years ago. At first I liked what I saw, but the more I watched the more I saw behavior that I feel really hurts the animals. Example after example of ineffective activism - done with very good intentions - but none the less, counterproductive. For example, an all or nothing stance. You tubers basically saying go vegan or don't bother doing anything, don't reduce consumption! Also behaviors that will make non vegans hate vegans. I am grateful to you and the Vegan Bros and a couple of others for promoting outreach that will help animals rather than hurt them. Luckily there is a vegan world outside of you tube filled with amazing activists. They give me hope for the future.

It really shows how much of a reflective person you are and how much aware you are about the impact of RUclipsrs on young people. The phenomenon of "othering" is something that can control masses and often creates creepy dynamics. Trying not to build an "army" or making people rally to your side blindly is a great thing you are doing. You are my favourite vegan youtuber for this particular reason. You discuss and educate without making it all about you as a person. Using facts to discuss things is way more educational than creating an unreflective fan culture. Fan-culture can be dangerous if the person who "leads" a certain group misuses that kind of power. This is what Durianrider does when he actually asks people to go ahead and beat the other guy (I really cannot spell it properly) up based on stupid allegations with no proof. And even if any of it was true, asking people to go ahead and take the law into their own heads in a violent manner still isn't okay (I know his claims are not true but I am just trying to say either way he did something that is inexcusable). We have justice systems to take care of these things. Power abuse and taking advantage of fan cultures is highly dangerous. Creating a sense where it is "us against the rest of the world" does cause people to act without thinking. Especially young people. So kudos to you for making this video and explaining the dynamics behind it.

I always wondered.... when vegans say that other vegans aren't vegan... but if they still aren't eating animal products... what are they then...? Plant based? LOL.

Two things. 1. I just discovered your videos and I really appreciate all the research you include in them. 2. The commercial before this video was for a tree stand harness, which I found humorous in an ironic way.
I don't think Eizel apologized and then said but. He honestly felt sorry for hurting her feelings and apologized for that (not for what he did like he would retract them but he is sorry that she is hurt). He maybe painted her as a person who cries when someone does things that she does to others constantly but I don't see them doing the same thing. Eizel was honest about apologizing, DR just tried to make this crap go away as soon as possible. Maybe I am biased at this point, I don't know any more. Need to go off youtube for a day or two.
I started going down the vegan path with Robyn Openshaw (Green Smoothie Girl), who is not vegan. Then I found Freelee, and right after her Harvey Johnstone. Back then Freelee was doing almost exclusively 'what I ate and did in a day' vids. And Harley was doing cycling vids and vids on buying the right bike and gear. They inspired me to go to the Woodstock Fruit Festival in 2013. I met a couple of great people, but I also found it highly political, and cliquey. Right after that there was a real drama when Freelee and Harley were banned from the festival because they were promoting the consumption of cooked foods. I followed that and sided with them. But right after that it seemed like Freelee was doing more negative critique and click baity vids. And Harley was ramping up with his 'harden the F*ck up' stance. I'm a sensitive person and I was pondering how that was possible and what impact it would have in my life. And then I decided to stop following them. They were going down a rabbit hole that I wasn't interested in.
I'm glad I found your channel, I don't agree with everything you say but at least you are measured and logical in your approach to critical thought and criticism. You also change your mind about things and own up to it. I also follow Eisel Mazard, but I find his vids harder to watch, he seems to have a meandering way of presenting his point of view.

I'll give my two cents as a non-vegan; seeing vegans treat other humans (vegans and non-vegans) the way they do completely discredits the message of empathy towards other beings and all beings having equal rights. The way F+DR treat both non-vegans and non-HCLFers is hypocritical. Think of the animals? No, you should think of other humans first. Animals aren't the ones you're trying to convince. You can't preach universal morality and then treat other humans like shit. It makes vegans look like bullies and in some cases straight up unstable, and completely discredits veganism as a movement. I want to transition into a more plant-based diet but currently cannot due to health conditions. When approaching vegans for help to do so I've been attacked and judged about things they do not even know. They've called me lazy and selfish when in actual fact there are days I cannot pee unaided. Instead of offering help they've simply tried to bully me into it, which most definitely ineffective.

While I find Freleee and Durian and That Vegan Couple unwatchable, sadly as you pointed out, many kids do look up to them. Kids love drama and soap opera hijinks so Freleee and durian probably won't lose many subscribers, but maybe they'll try reaching a more adult demographic now that so many adults have criticized their high school nincompoopery.

Oh yeah that's for sure. A lot of people do fall into the trap of idolizing people and we all do it some extent, but I try my best not to, of course there's still people that I should be more critical of them, but I certainly know that no matter how much I like someone I'm ok with disagreeing with them and I can call them out, but I'm definitely a bit less critical of people I like and I should probably work more on that.
In my opinion you are the most sensible vegan appearing on youtube.
I don't like to see Internet hive mind castigating people completely, but at the same time I can't quite believe how poorly both Freelee and DR take criticism. It's such an important skill as an adult in the workplace, relationships, friendships etc. It really is vital to being an adult, and so given their inability to do so it makes me wonder what they must be like in real life.

You are not only one of the most reasonable vegans, but one of the most reasonable RUclipsrs. I don't know who would think you're not vegan judging from your videos. Your message is 100% vegan. Sometimes the vegan community goes crazy (like the Furious Pete thing and FullyRawKristina's "angry vegans" video) so it needs to be called out, but being critical does not exclude being vegan. If anything, rational thinking supports veganism completely because it helps the planet, animals and people's health.
I love your videos but find you share SO much information that I find it hard to take in. This isn't a critique, but rather personal reflection. I usually have to watch 3-5 times to get it all. You always bring about deeper thinking Swayze.

I had to stop watching Freelee's videos full stop. I like some of her earlier vids which are far more positive and point out the positives of a vegan lifestyle without judgement. It seems now that neither one of them can create a video that doesn't take SOME kind of stab at other people regardless of their reasons. They actually make me pretty ashamed to be Australian because when I see that people equate Aussies with those two... Well. Most of us are nothing like them!
They both turned me away from veganism. I was interested in it for health benefits not so much the moral stance, but apparently that doesn't make you vegan 'enough'. Their attitudes are poisonous.
Sane and reasonable discussion from people like yourself keeps me interested. I don't deal well with people being negative towards me, I just stay the hell away from it. I don't need that in my life. So when people are positive and reasonable it makes it a lot easier to be open to the message.
Drama? Screw that. I'm too old and bitter to deal with their highschool crap *chuckle*.

You're one the very few vegan youtubers that I admire and respect. In fact I dislike most vegans. We vegans can be so dogmatic and militant about our beliefs, and I feel having that kind of hatred puts many non vegans off.. I know I've gotten a lot of hate just for questioning the actions and behaviors of vegans even tho I'm a vegan as well.

I can't tell if Harley is really a bad person but I really don't like him. He is childish, egosentric, narcisistic. He needs to bash other people because he think they can't be wrong sometimes, because he thinks he has the last and ultimate word.

Eisel is definitely not infallible. I'm a little worried, its going in that direction because some of his strongest supporters, people he has inspired beyond youtube are up and comers. I wonder if on some level that's why Eisel enabled comments, because he wants to open his image to being torn down by the public riffraff a bit, and generally ground his channel more.
I agree, I think there are a lot of people that feel duped/wronged by Durianrider in various ways. This "drama" has given them a forum to talk about that, to communicate feelings of embarrassment and injustice, to seek a sort of revenge-redemption for themselves and in a sense re-craft how they want veganism to be represented going forward.
I am surprised that you did not mention Hannah Cloe. That has CROSSED the line.

not really. She was an adult at the time. Julia Boer is 16 years old. Sounds like HC was disappointed with the experience, that's very different. DR was accusing Eisel of being a pedophile (which was not at all true) but HC drawing parallels between her situation with DR vs Eisel and Julia is flawed (even though the Julia/Eisel situation was fiction) as she's an adult! DR may not have behaved the way that she liked, but I don't think anyone can say it's the same.
I've recently had to unsubscribe from someone because they took criticism so poorly. One example of that person was them saying people who don't create RUclips videos in their niche aren't allowed to criticize.. which was definitely the breaking point. Same person is also willing to overlook the wrongs in the vegan community (especially in regards to pseudo-science) because veganism would still be in a positive light. This was all from what I perceived to be a rather rational vegan, too.
It's a shame pseudo-science and those sorts of mentalities are so pervasive in the vegan community (pretty much any community, to be sure, but it seems more prominent amongst RUclips vegans.)

How someone can watch Durianrider and not get angry/annoyed after a minute I'll never understand. Honestly he's just a man who swears a lot a whose only arguments are yt views and the fact that his girlfriend is hot. I won't even mention his 'curing' crohn, schizofrenia and god knows what else by sugar binging.
I actually didn't watch any videos regarding the matter up until know - just thought it's a waste of time. You convinced me to look it up, so I saw probably the most important ones(couldn't go though the freelee one). In conclusion: Durianrider is even worse than I thought and him turning teenangers against other people is downright scary. The allegations he made are indeed very serious and even though it's very clear he made it all up had I been in Eisel's shoes I'd definitely fight to take all of the videos and posts about it down. In some time everyone will forget about all the drama but the mentions here and there will stay.
Also, I shouldn't be suprised but the fact that all of this is happening because according to DR Freelee's feeling were hurt(same Freelee who spends most of her social media time bashing other people for the way they look, live and view the world and responds to any comments saying she might be to harsh that everyone should grow a thicker skin) is laughable.
Also, thank you Swayze. Because of the reasearch I just did on the subject I found out about DR sore pelvis, name of the first girl he kissed and when he lost his virginity. I don't know how I've lived without this information.

Just because Freelee eats like 5lbs of fruits a day, does not mean she doesn't have and eating disorder. SHE CLEARLY DOES!!!
Her fear of getting fat is strong, considering the fact she's admitted to riding her bike at least 200-300 km per week and eating less than 10 grams a fat. She says she's not a fataphobe, but she clearly is! When I attempted a similar lifestyle to hers with very limited fat, I went out and binged on donuts, greasy food etc.
Freelee is a plant-based Rt4 vegan with clear and obvious body issues with implants (not that there's anything wrong with that) and an even more clear, mild eating disorder.
