That automation thing you were talking about only happens when you're changing you're effect with the record button still pressed, if you press the record button to turn it off it won't do its own automation.
Serato Studio doesn't automate adjustments to affects if you don't want it to. To automate press record and then make adjustments to effects as you want them to play out. If you don't want to automate while listening then press play with record off and make adjustments.
Hey Sarah! Thanks for the in-depth video. Just wanted to touch on a couple of things we’ve recently added or you may have missed. Copying and pasting notes/patterns is possible - hold down SHIFT and drag to select notes (or just COMMAND + A to select all notes). Once selected you can duplicate these notes as you would expect. Additionally, you can hold down COMMAND and drag notes up/down to adjust their velocity. Holding COMMAND will also display note velocity. To use Automation you can click the Robot icon in the top right. When in Automation Mode, clicking a knob/button will display the automation for this control so you can tweak or reset it. Regarding using Studio as a Plugin, you aren’t the only person to ask for this. However, our plan in the early days of Studio is to really build on it as a standalone tool - we have some big things planned! Having said that, we do also want to make it easy to take what you make in Studio and progress with it elsewhere. This is why we have just added per-pad drum stems, as well as more features in the pipeline to help with this workflow in the future. If you have any further questions or you are wanting to learn more about certain features of Serato Studio, I would highly recommend checking out the Serato Studio manual, it's a very comprehensive guide and is updated regularly. Hope that helps, keep up the good work!
Welcome to the bright side! :) I bought a Machine Mikro because of you but I moved over to Serato Studio and just bought a Pioneer DJ controller for it! Really great update to your video editing especially the titles! I guess you are using FCPX? Given that those titles-that-move-the-video-around are rather difficult with other NLEs. (Needing After Effects) I think Serato Studio is an easy to use game changer to beat production just like FCPX was to video editing. Some love it some hate it.
Sarah: 3) automation and 4) velocity are all “hidden” or actually easily accessible behind the ROBOT icon in the right of the pattern sequencer. It’s all there.
Actually, pattern copying has been part of Serato Studio since the beta period. You have to be in song mode in order to drag/paste the patterns as many times as you want, and you can go in each copy and make edits.
I was fortunate to get in on the early release of serato studio and was offered to pay 60 bucks a year forever so I jumped on it and will grow with it.
Serato Studio is a great way to get an idea down quickly. And I think the latest update may have pattern copying. It is definitely a valuable investment for working musicians. I passed on the subscription, because my subscription allowance is maxed out.
As a DJ still learning how to produce, I found Ableton hard to pick up. I subscribed to Serato Studio hoping it would be easier since I'm familiar with Serato. I'm learning by watching RUclips tutorials so any future tutorials on Serato Studio would be appreciated!
King ANT FL has become a pretty decent DAW, it has come a long way. What I like about it is the free upgrades for life. I’m a Cubase user and wish Steinberg would have such a model lol.

This is my first video watching your work, but you highkey inspired me to get going on a Maschine and get the most out of it. I feel you on wanting to do everything in one thing, but I want the flexibility and knowledge of working in a DAW. It is just that DAWs with everything are A LOT (I know there are good free ones, but Abelton/FL/Pro Tools are the primary ones).
Thanks Dude (this was super informative). Also, the quality of this video is AMAZING!! The new light makes your eyes look so cool (It's freaking me out!!!). Thanks Sarah.
I really love Setato Studio, because even though it is not a complete DAW,it felt like something fresh.I mean when Serato Sample came out every DAW felt so much better with Sample in it,Studio just is something new on a market that felt every new software was a copy of a previous one or just added somekinf of gimmick or a small type of quality of life. Also let's just keep in mind that Serato is really listening to their customers.
Is excellent and easy too for those who want a daw for Mix ! But still need to improve the lifetime price and update, the automate in the audio track for individual volume and effect for the audio track
Hey Sarah, I would probably give this a try but those cons are pretty strong lol Right now I'm learning FLstudios and Ableton live and for FL I can't seem to isolate pattern effects to only the patterns like if I have one effect for a pattern it bleeds out onto the other patterns resulting into a bunch of effects on everything on the track. I'm working on solving that issue now. Wha'ts the main DAW you use Sarah?
Sharah i’m 61 years old and just purchased this software for 75.00 for the full licensed copy.you can copy & paste to another pattern as needed.I just wish i could record vocal tracks.but for me it’s working out just fine.you have to click command on a mac highlight the notes to adjust the volume. Thanks I enjoyed your video.
I use Serato studio now and it is a good program for me at the moment Because I am a dj making the transition to the production world so it is an easy transition but im starting to evolve further than Serato Studio can handle and it crashes a lot depending on what plugin I use with it....love ur stuff and ur work ethic ✌🏾
trust me i been using serato studio since it came out and u literally can do everthing u want it to do there are many untapped things u can do. now the only thing left is to get them to create something to bus into.
I use both Serato studio and Maschine, different daw lead me to different results & experiment ! I really like in serato studio the Efx chain , some fx can literally transform a sample in to another thing. Plus the sample n pitch feature is way better than Maschine.. if you re in the “sample vibe” serato offers ( for me ) much more creativity to dial in with 💡🤟🏻
Kwenu Beats light tail reverb is one of my favorite & mind blowin if you want to add some space in your samples with the touch of a knob. Wavey LPF can change samples in a more drastic way . Limiter cruncher add the right amount of dirt;)
I don’t like Serato Studio because there’s a subscription you pay. I wouldn’t buy it knowing that you have to continuously pay for it with no end in sight. In that case, I paid for Serato Sample and love it. Great video.
I got the beta discount for $60 a year, $5 a month. I don't mind the sub-model. From a business perspective, having a sub allows for a company to hire more people to improve the product. If you're a sample musician, it will be a great companion to your existing daw. That being said, this program needs more features to justify $15 a month. Even at $60 a year during the beta, I didn't think it was worthy of a sub. I did it because it has potential and I wanted to see how it improves. So far, they've released new download packs and updates every few weeks.
I’ve never used the software before, but it looks like a solid first step for them. Hopefully future updates just enhance the goodness they already have. They have some features that seem really unique and beneficial for producers and beat makers of all levels. I think what will hold them back in the long run is the subscription model they have. That stuff is brutal on your wallet, and especially with other better products out there not doing that it makes it hard to go with serato.
I few other things I've noticed in edition to how nice your teeth and smile is Sarah is that you almost have to think "Dj slash Producer" with this software. The way the sound's EQ and volume controls are laid out... One thing the software must get is a viewable mixer that shows side by side tracks. Balancing sounds takes a little more in terms of cooperative movement then what the software currently offers. I do like it tho, but it's not a "studio" or "DAW" yet...
I did the beta testing for serato studio and its great. It has some really nice samples to work with. But honestly if you have a main daw theres no reason to get it. You'd be better off getting serato sample as plugin inside your main daw. Making the beat in serato studio then exporting the stems to another daw is too time consuming. Plus I hate subscription based models because over time you will over pay for it. At the end of the beta testing i got an offer to get serato studio for $59 a year for life which was great but I declined the offer. I already use Logic pro, Maschine Studio, and the MPCX and I didn't need another program. But its a great program for the beginner who has nothing else. Btw, The easiest way to detect bass notes is to play it in higher octaves first. Once you figure it out at the higher octave then transpose down. Or use a piano then switch the instrument to a bass. The bass notes are tricky at lower octaves because they tend to sound similar. Playing them at higher pitches first then back down is the best way.
Yeah I will never use subscription Daw's / Vst's etc / no matter how good they sound just sale it so we can own it Facts / Not KnocN What U Doing Mama Keep It CracN
Me too. This monthly subscription stuff is stupid. I used samples & splice for 4 months, but I kinda consider that a purchase since you keep the samples. Paying a sub for an app or plugin? 👎 No Way!
I agree with you on that. But I'll willing to do a rent-to-own in the matters I am paying the same amount to own the software for life with smaller monthly fees.
I purchased the yearly subscription. i tried importing samples but it never analyzes it correctly. I also have an issue with it crashing when i use VST plugins. It also has poor response time when you have more than 8 tracks going. Good attempt but a lot of kinks that need to be worked out to compete with Logic, FL, Maschine, etc.
Bizzo Beats I struggle with getting loopcloud/ loopmasters samples in too. Other samples work for me. And yes sometimes when inserting a vst it crashes. Once a vst is inserted it never crashed for me. I don’t know if it slows down performance or not it never has for me :)
Here's number 6 and 7. There is no Tap tempo and the Quantize button doesn't fix the notes to the grid after you have entered the midi notes. That's DAW Standards!!
I am super new to making beats. One day, I just got tired of waiting for someone to make me the perfect beat for my poetry. Last week, I was using Music Maker and this week I am trying this program for free. That's how new I am to software and the process of making a beat. Serato for me... I love that I can create my own drum pattern and don't have to have much music theory knowledge in order to sync the sounds together. Since you first posted this video, has Serato made it easier to complete your beats within the program? are you still using the program? Thanks for the content!
Copying your beats is done by copying scenes or expanding the number of bars for the scene. You can also add effects to each instrument, even in the drum kits. The effects are at the top of the instrument panel and the bottom of the sample. I purchased pro for one flat price, no subscription
Have you tried Beatmaker 3 on iPad. The best way to create a quick beat. You can even create a whole song using it, like protools or reaper on computer with all the same features and ability to use audio units. It's especially great because it is as good but way way cheaper than windows or Mac apps and sooo portable Subscription is great because you don't put out a lot of cash right away. You pay as you go. Why do people want to pay a lot right away. What if you decide after a year that you want to change to another app. That happens often. So you will end up paying more in the long run. People feel like it's cheaper because once they pay, there are no more payments. Come on. Think. I used to prefer just owning stuff, but as soon as I thought about it, i realized it was because I was not into change. Change is not always bad.the goal is to end up with more money after time, isn't it?
My 3rd comment after watching this hehe. I too was lucky to get a deal due to being a beta tester but even at full price it is still totally worth it. Especially if a) one is a beginner and has (almost) no other subscriptions or b) if one can put it down as a business expense. I don’t like subscriptions but Adobe, Serato and email marketing/ domains it is. No Sounds.com or Splice or anything. My reason comparing the value of Serato Studio compared to Ableton Suite (Ableton Live WITH Instruments) Serato Studio is affordable! (Ableton is crazy expensive! Like $700-800. How many years of Serato Studio including instruments can you get for that amount?! many! And updating Ableton costs too. I didn’t update beyond Ableton Live 7 as I did not use it that much back then) Maschine Mikro is obviously much more affordable, still even the $599 Maschine is a good deal - however the Maschine software is super complicated in comparison, don’t you think? It can do more but most of it is German-over-engineering and not really necessary to make beats (I’m German too so I hope I’m allowed to say that) And there is no auto pitch of samples and VSTs which I feel is the killer feature. I hope NI figures out how to add that soon!) Sarah, I hope this video doesn’t ruin your trip/ relationship with NI ;)
Professor-Wrecks thanks for saying that you felt my breakdown was reasonable. By the way you can not compare the instruments and samples that you get with Ableton Standard and don’t get with Ableton intro to the great sounds and instruments of Serato. It’s day and night! Also if you don’t know how to mix and master being able to “do it in Ableton” does not help. My mixes and especially my “mastering “ sucked in Ableton. Serato’s built in Brightener EQ, Limiter etc on the little mastering section helped me much more. But I would still hire someone just for that if I release an album.
Nice review Sarah. I just took a test drive with the free trial version and will try the one month free for a $1. If I am happy with it after the month I would buy it as a standalone because I don't really like renting. My list of likes and dislikes are almost identical to yours. I am glad to see some of the cons you discussed have solutions now but there is one area I hope Serrate Studio can improve upon, that is hardware support. It appears that not many devices are supported natively by the software. I don't care that my MPC is not supported but say my digital DJ devices such as Numark NS7III or my portable DJ2GoTouch2. Strangely these are both natively supported in Serato DJ so why not this tool. Overall super clean and fast to whip up a track and I hope to find away to incorporate this into a workflow or a live set if hardware support for my devices in possible in future. Peace!
I’m late seeing this video but you’re able to copy and paste by just ctrl+A and then go to another scene that’s empty or what not and you can ctrl+v. I know if using a Mac this may be different. But the copy and paste is available :)
If you click the scene and then the bar 1, or 2 etc.. it’ll repeat and you don’t have to wait for it to loop all the way around to hear your effect or change
The website I downloaded this from offered me a free download, but Im hearing its subscription based? Is it only sub based? I couldn't see that when I tried to dowload?
Tax expenses sound good until, you need that mortgage approval. So from my experience I recommend that you not write off too many items the year prior to planning the purchase of a home. Consider speaking to a mortgage loan advisor to plan ahead
Thank you so much about this subscription business. Seems nearly all companies are jumping on this subscription model these days. I have some subscriptions and can't afford another one. I get that they're trying to protect their products from piracy and that's cool but I'm not making money with my music...Yet... so it's a liability I can't afford. Some companies are missing business from me by attempting to force feed me a subscription. And I'm not having that.
Not worth 15 a month. There are cracked versions out there that work fine though. The program itself is probably worth 40-60 usd if they sold it outright. Imo this program should be free for people who have Serto DJ Pro. It does have some nice, useful features and all but, not enough to justify a 15 dollar a month sub.
Great video!! The subscription thing kills it for me. I hate that. Let me buy the program & use it how I want. I like Acid Pro & its turned into a subscription based program. Naw, it's a no no for me.
This is exactly why I quit using Adobe, Pro Tools, Microsoft stuff, the list goes on. I'm broke af - I can save money to blow in a big chunk now and then, but as a musician/creative, monthly income is not the gig.
Nr 5 is a huge no-no for me. It should either be a rent-to-buy model or I should be able to just buy it, to not have that option makes me say NO NO NO! Feel the same about Output Arcade. I’m really against such subscription only model. Agree with you, not cool!
Have you tried Serato Sample? Is it worth $15/ month? What are your thoughts? Comment below to win a Native Instruments expansion! 🙌🏾✌🏾

You know... Dope people love dope people. You're dope people!
I didn’t update beyond Ableton Live 7 as I did not use it that much back then)
Maschine Mikro is obviously much more affordable, still even the $599 Maschine is a good deal - however the Maschine software is super complicated in comparison, don’t you think? It can do more but most of it is German-over-engineering and not really necessary to make beats (I’m German too so I hope I’m allowed to say that) And there is no auto pitch of samples and VSTs which I feel is the killer feature. I hope NI figures out how to add that soon!)
Sarah, I hope this video doesn’t ruin your trip/ relationship with NI ;)
Peace!
Hey Sarah, did you use machine controller or akai mini or any other ?
I'm loving MIXX. Great free Serato alternative.
I’m late seeing this video but you’re able to copy and paste by just ctrl+A and then go to another scene that’s empty or what not and you can ctrl+v. I know if using a Mac this may be different. But the copy and paste is available :)
Thanks for making this..
I agree about it being a suped up Serato Sample, I basically use it as that so if it was to fit in Ableton Live it'd be amazing
Currently $9.99 a month...btw, the background music is a bit loud, I can barely can focus on what you saying.
Good review.
Black woman making beats - auto subscribe
If you click the scene and then the bar 1, or 2 etc.. it’ll repeat and you don’t have to wait for it to loop all the way around to hear your effect or change
Is it good for just adding 808 beats to songs or just editing tracks for DJ use? I’m not trying to create full on new songs just editing tracks
Beat of the week is of the hook! :O
YOU CAN BUY IT OUTRIGHT ALSO.
THANK!
YOU!
Gonna cop some gear
Number 3 negative, you can hold shift and highlight all the notes, then copy/paste.
Hmm I keep seeing stuff about this. I like fl studio. Is this easier to use?
Is instrument key matching optional? You can just click on/off?
I love your vids
They fixed at least the biggest thing here. You can buy it now, who knows if it's only for version or two...
6 months later, can confirm, you'll have to buy the next version.
@@CornFlex420 hopefully the upgrade to v2 will be heavily discounted for those who own v1 though
Are u able to record vocals on Serato Studio?
Thank you so much about this subscription business. Seems nearly all companies are jumping on this subscription model these days. I have some subscriptions and can't afford another one. I get that they're trying to protect their products from piracy and that's cool but I'm not making money with my music...Yet... so it's a liability I can't afford. Some companies are missing business from me by attempting to force feed me a subscription. And I'm not having that.
200 forever
Sarah You Are cool!
Please check their website. There is an option to buy the product.
You can't use it as a plug-in, but does it support Rewire?
Serato studio is really dope just wish it wasn't a subscription I have enough of those already
Do you like Serato over Maschine mk3?
Naw
I rocked the MK3 and love it! Thanks for the response. 👍
My serato studio feels like it heats up my MacBook faster than other DAWs. Is there a fix for this?
Thank you :)
is the UI still larger than screen size? or have they fixed that since V1.0.0 ?!?!!?
Add mic feature for voices
The subscription is a no go
Hit the Robot Button, that controls your automation and velocity parameters!
Its no longer subscription alone. you can buy it now!!
wow, here & early.(:
I don't think that a subscription is a great impression on music making daws either even if it keeps growing better and better.
those eyes doe!
This is exactly why I quit using Adobe, Pro Tools, Microsoft stuff, the list goes on. I'm broke af - I can save money to blow in a big chunk now and then, but as a musician/creative, monthly income is not the gig.
i agree. these companies are a bit parasitic. I haven't tried it yet, but love those matching features.
I love the rainbows on your face at given times. :-) PRO-FX!!! (Just say you did it on purpose...)
MellowDee is my new word now...
Nr 5 is a huge no-no for me. It should either be a rent-to-buy model or I should be able to just buy it, to not have that option makes me say NO NO NO!
Feel the same about Output Arcade. I’m really against such subscription only model. Agree with you, not cool!
You can buy it outright. Maybe that wasn't the case when you left this comment though
@@rorz999 Yes indeed it wasn’t an option when I wrote the comment, from what I can see it became available as a one-off purchase is november 2021
