Like I said at my age I need all the advantages I can get. And you are absolutely right that you can just about make a temporary weapon out of just about anything if you just use the noodle the good Lord gave you, thereby increasing your odds. And at my age, hand to hand fighting isn't something I want to do against someone much younger. So if your reading this comment and your an older person like me, then you should have a few improvised weapons handy also to increase your odds against a much younger attacker. Great video Karl! Thank you for this presentation. I learned a new credit card technique.
Since the Seventies I've been convinced that "armed" is a state of mind. Throughout a 27-year military career and working more than three decades as a security guard I've observed people who possessed weapons but were actually unarmed. I got a copy of Mel Tappen's "Survival Guns" when it was first published and in a segment on improvised weapon, Tappen described the tactical pen before such a thing existed on the commercial market--he used a top-end fountain pen. The most serious bit of culture shock I received while in the military was that I had enlisted in the UNARMED forces--Marines and soldiers are normally unarmed. For what it's worth, I second "armed is a mindset."

It is legal to carry a break down cane on a plane and i have been working on a design for one based on the old nunchuku platform. something everyone should keep in mind, option 1 is run. a large chunk of conflicts can be avoided if you're fuckin FAST (not just physical ig, but that's off-topic). if you have a weapon on you or have training in martial arts, then it's easy to get into the mindset of using the weapon or your training, but remember running is usually the best idea. of course you'll have to measure up the situation to see if running is an option, and if it isn't go nuts with that brick-breaking paper roll, they'll rue the day they messed with you. thank you for coming to my TED talk.

In Canada, we're not permitted to carry weapons for the purpose of self-defence. That said, I ride a bicycle pretty much everywhere for 7-8 months out of the year, and wrapped around my waist the entire time is a nice, heavy length of chain. It's actually designed to be worn that way, as it's fabric covered with a velcro adjustment strap and a quick-release click buckle. If anyone comes at me, I can have it out and swinging in a split-second, and one end has a *very* heavy lock.
I tend to feel pretty safe with that thing wrapped around my waist, because it gives me plenty of reach and the ability to deliver crushing blows to an attacker's limbs or head.😁

IMO, every thoughtful person should have the 10" Stanley Fat Max claw bar within reach of their driver's seat. For 9 bucks, you have a REALLY good vehicle rescue tool (which you need) and you can use it for other purposes, as well. Have a fire extinguisher in your cargo area, too. It's also an important multi-tasker.

This is exactly what I’ve been teaching my family for years, even those with no martial arts experience. I refer to those types of weapons as “W.O.O.s”(weapons of opportunity). No matter where you are you should always be scanning your surroundings for anything that you could use as a weapon. Your noticing the little old lady’s curved disc holder would certainly make an improvised karambit. Thanks for reinforcing my lessons. I will be sending your video to them to reinforce that I’m not paranoid.👍👍👍 Krav Maga with weapons training is a must for every American just as it is in Israel.

About 3 yrs ago, my grandson (10 yrs old at that time), were out of town attending an organized photo walk (bunch of people with DSLRs walking around taking pics). Anyway, everyone had wandered off on their own, and my grandson and I were off on a side street. Came to an intersection and a car with heavily-tinted windows pulls up, stops, and the windows roll down. A couple of young, rough-looking hooligans stared at us up and down. Had my grandson get behind me. My camera bag is the "messenger" style, and I had my very sturdy, metal monopod with me that day. I removed the monopod from under the bag flap and stood there holding it like a club. The car drove away.

I made one of those paracord balls with a Tungsten buffer weight in it that I attached to my keys. I have the cord portion double braided so it's only about 3 inches long. Hold the keys like a handle and you can generate a pretty substantial amount of force to deter an attacker. But once I pull it off the key ring it unravels to a single braided piece a little over a foot long. Put it back on the key ring or simply choke up just a little bit and you've got a pretty effective weapon.

I always carry 2 or 3 items with me that could be great improvised weapons. Their even capable of inflicting severe injuries on an attacker. The best improvised weapons are the ones that are used as they were designed for but could also inflict severe injuries even fatal injuries in self defense without being destroyed in the process.

I remember going to combines school as a private and asking the question of "if I'm wearing a vest full of hard pokey shit, then why am I worried about a correctly placed cross-collar when I could just pull out a full mag/pvs14/Gerber/etc and beat the guy with it?" I never got a good answer, just 'well, this is what we are teaching', which made sense in the context, but improvised weapons and the mindset of using anything to fight seemed like it should have been the first priority.
I'd be curious to see what combatives school looks like now.

Lol. I sometimes find myself in a school building so I started thinking about the possibility of an active violence scenario. Sandy hook elementary school shooting effected me greatly.
Obviously firearms, knifes and other recognizable items are out. In under 1 minute I could use many things to make a pdw. 1 minuet is about the time it takes to get students to a secure room and get them silent.
The most common item to improvise a weapon from was a simple pair a scissors. Take less then a minute to break them in to two parts and you end up with two daggers.
The only limitation is 1 minute and the level of you creativity. You are only disarmed if you allow yourself to be limited by someone's rules.

Another good idea is a hoodie jacket shirt or bandana. You can trap a weapon or hand and or choke the bad guy also.

Thank you, Sir, for your videos. I almost made the mistake of commenting on the video without reading what you added in the description. Duh! I really appreciate what you said about MINDSET and awareness. I already knew about the rolled magazine, but I did NOT know you could use it for the strike you showed, and I had no idea it would break a concrete block. I thought you had to use them to jab or hammer fist the target. I haven't flown in awhile, however when I did fly, I would always, always, always have a book (usually hard cover) with me. I could comment on some other things I learned in this video, but I don't want to bore you by repeating back to you what you already said. I love your videos. Thank you for your service, and thank you for sharing your valuable knowledge and experience with us.

Run, hide, barricade ... here's what you do next. I respect that message. I get so sick of these GIJoe wannabes that act like they're hoping for trouble and if things ever actually went down they'd either wet themselves or spray bullets and THEN wet themselves when they're empty. Real defense is just that - DEFENSE. You don't go looking for it, but if it finds you ... you do whatever it takes with whatever you got. Way to keep it real.

When I was taking Budo Taijutsu, the first weapons we were taught with, aside from our bodies, were sticks. Bojutsu. Starting with a stick the size of a pen or marker and working up to a full length Bo.
The reasoning that any relatively stick-shaped object is a weapon, and you're surrounded by them all the time.

I completely agree with all of these things i have personally used some of the objects in this video as self defense tools the few times I've found myself in danger and unable to defuse the situation I believe the strongest most unstoppable weapon is your own will to survive to not be a easy victim even against someone shooting at you I'm only saying this because I've done it in the real world against real scumbags in places where you wouldn't have a clue it was going to happen my first experiences the parking lot at timberline lodge Mt hood Oregon my second a grocery store in the middle of the day in the "nice" side of town and I'm a nobody with basically no formal combat skills armed with only a strong will to live i guess
